HBO's new show: Girls
This Sunday, HBO will premiere the new show Girls, about four broke twentysomethings trying to make their way in New York. ReplyDeleteWe were thinking of cancelling HBO but than i remembered that this series was going to air in April that i told my husband to hold off in cancelling it. As you can tell, I can't wait to see this! Even though I'm much much older than these girls, I will always identify with these girls.

ReplyDeleteI loved Sex and the City, but it was so unrealistic in many ways. I mean, how did Carrie, for many years just a columnist and NOT the majorly successful writer she became later on, afford that apartment and all those fabulous clothes?
It seems that there is a resurgence of these "single girls in their apartments" shows. Does anyone remember the very short-lived "Time of Your Life," starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, and the then-unknown Jennifer Garner? The funny thing (to me, since I've never liked JLH) was that JLH was the star but it was really just as her star was waning, and while the show was cancelled after a season or so, Jennifer Garner became a huge star with Alias. This was 1999-ish. It was two single girls making their way in the city, and was a great show. I bet it would be a hit now.
Just saw the above post about Tiny Furniture! I had never heard of it and randomly saw it on Netflix and it looked interesting, so I've have had it in my queue for awhile. Have to watch it!

Reading the description for this show all I could think of was the already running show "2 Broke Girls" on CBS.

I've heard amazing things about Lena Dunham, love Judd Apatow and have been impressed with pretty much everything HBO has done the past few years. However, I live in north Brooklyn and I just feel like I was these girls a couple of years ago and I meet these girls any time I leave my apartment. Why do I need to watch the TV version? I'll probably watch the first episode though. I mean, it can't be as bad as Two Broke Girls, right??

ReplyDeleteI really, really disliked Tiny Furniture. I wrote a review of it on my blog here: http://everylifeeveryfun.blogspot.com/2012/03/tiny-furniture-is-awful.html (I did rewatch the part during which I made ramen--but it was still incredibly boring.) I'm a bit curious about the positive hype of the show and might watch at some point despite my feelings that this is going to be just as miserable as that movie. At least the girls in the ads all over the city look like they've got clean hair!

ReplyDeleteHate to say this but this show just sounds depressing! Is this the life of a 20 somthing girl. I am just 30 but I remember my 20s full of great nights out with my girl friends, coffee and cigarettes in the morning, long nights with autocad. My only drama was that I could find a boy to date. Are these the expectations for young girls now days...... find looser boys to have sex with. Man this is sad. Seems like these girls have no love from friends, family or respect for themselves. Seems funny but in a oddly depressing way. And lastly where are the nice guys in this show. Are there any shows that have characters like nice guys, who treat girls with respect and love. Sad.

ReplyDeleteI think I'm the only person who didn't laugh at the trailer. Then again I read Cynthia's link(commented above) to an article that talked about the glaring issues in this show. I understand that shows offer a "slice of life" and in some cases this means representing one narrow group of the population. It's just a little weird that a show that is called "girls" is so narrow-minded and cliche. The main characters are all white, privileged, have issues with self-worth, and are sarcastic to boot(haven't seen that before). Sounds like I have a lot to relate to at 29. Umm, no. Hopefully the show has more depth than I'm being led to believe. I mean, it is being hyped as being a "voice of a generation". For the record, all my friends are of different ethnicities. I mean, I do live in Los Angeles(hello diversity).

Loved the trailer! I recently cancelled cable (* as a responsible, early 30-something thing to do in exchange for monthly house cleaning service) but it's new shows like this that make me wish I didn't! Hopefully I can find it online eventually. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not at all an "angry Asian" (born/raised in small CA town with relatively small Asian population), AND I do not mean at all to funnel a post about a Judd Apatow-backed t.v. show into a discussion about race, but...just coming from a purely personal perspective, I couldn't help but feel a little alienated watching this trailer. It's not that I need to see people who look like me. Rather, it's that I just cannot culturally relate to these characters, even though I went to an Ivy League school, lived in NY for a while, etc. But thats just the surface. I and most of my female friends who moved to NY after college dealt with weightier issues than what's suggested in this trailer, things like parents losing their homes/jobs or dying, sex(ual assault, or worse), stalkers!, depression, not speaking perfect English, etc.
ReplyDeleteDespite my misgivings about this trailer, though, I think I will give the show a chance. I'm a big Judd Apatow fan, and maybe Girls will take cue from Freaks & Geeks and mix humor with some reality.

ReplyDeleteI will not be watching this show. I am interested in the concept (I love everything NYC), but I'm tired of adult women being referred to as "girls." I am too annoyed that this was considered to be the most fitting and acceptable title to tune in.
ReplyDeleteI just watched this show. As a married mom in her 40's with two daughters in their Tweens, I sincerely hope this is an exaggerated depiction of 20-something life in a metropolitan city. The lead character is a spoiled brat whose life has been financed by her middle class parents, and feels they owe it to her to do so until she can have the life they want for her. Really? I've been working since I was 16 and while going to college. I've no sympathy for this character. Get a job and get off your privileged butt! Go get your life started on your blood, sweat and tears, and not that of your parents, who want a house by the lake.

I watched it, and I thought it was whatever. I thought I would enjoy it because I am 23 (in LA, however - but I would love to try living in NYC!) and trying to figure out what to do with my life. Maybe I did not like it because I did not feel like I could relate to the main character. She spent a lot of time complaining about her life situation and not doing anything about it. I am willing to check out the next few episodes to see where it goes and how it progresses. I am curious to read what you thought about it.
