Haircut inspiration

How long is your hair? Mine has been halfway down my back for as long as I can remember, but this morning I stumbled upon photos of this Madewell model, and her choppy locks are tempting me to go shoulder-length. I tried holding up my hair in the mirror to see what it would look like, but it's hard to tell. Are you daring with your haircuts? My sister will dye her hair in the sink, and cut blunt bangs without blinking an eye. But I'm such a wuss, even over a few inches! :)

  5. Go for it! I tend to go for a dramatic cut about once every couple years. It feels amazing and liberating and it grows back so quickly. Just this past fall I chopped off about 10 inches and loved it.

Do it! I just chopped my hair from below my shoulders to a Michelle Williams-esque long pixie and I'm beyond thrilled. It feels so liberating! And change is good for everyone. (Besides, hair grows back! It's never permanent!)

  12. You have a really beautiful face... you can have short hair.

Seriously! You only should have short hair when you have a feminine and delicate face.

I had hair down my back for the last five years, never daring to cut it more than a few inches. And a couple months ago I woke up and decided to get a messy bob, a la Alexa Chung, and loved it! Felt so liberating, matches my personality better and it was nice to look in the mirror and see something different. I miss my long hair from time to time, but it will always grow back. Plus, after the first plunge, it's much easier to try different styles.

  14. This is funny because to me, the picture looks like they have just tucked the model's hair into the back of her shirt! Maybe you should get a blazer and pull it on over your hair, and then tousle a bit and see if you like how it would look? x

  15. Shoulder length isn't really short-- I definitely think you would rock this haircut, especially with red lipstick.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm with you. My hair is at my lower back right now, but I'm more and more tempted every day to cut it off. That cut is super cute.

  17. Within the past year, I went from hair that was to my low back, to a chin-length bob, to a pixie cut. My driver's license has my long hair and people have to double check to make sure its me. I've gotten lots of compliments on it, but I am looking to grow it out to about the length in these pictures. I think its a great length to play with and not feel overwhelmed by too much hair.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Lauren C.T.11:53 AM

PS: Her hair is not really that different from yours. It is actually tucked inside her clothing. If you look at more of the Madewell site, you'll notice that it's actually longer than it looks here, and in one shot they actually have it pinned up into a faux-bob. If you add a few extra piecey layers and use some sort of wax or other product to style it a bit more tousseled, you could probably acheive a similar look without doing anything too drastic.

  19. I would go for it! That style is so cute, and hair always grows back? Why not?

  20. it's past my shoulders, i just trimmed an inch off last night. i'm growing out my mop for 2nd time to donate. this time tho, when i chop off the 12" i want to still have hair past my shoulders.

I chopped off my hair from well below my shoulders to just below my ears last June. I loved it for two weeks then got engaged and have been growing it out ever since! Maybe I'll chop it off again after the wedding : )

  23. I love growing my hair out and then chopping it off for that dramatic "oohhh" moment. But, it can be a vicious cycle. About 2 months after I cut, I wonder, "how long would my hair be by now???" So, the last time I did it, I wish I hadn't. I'm now in Paris, and I see lots of women with great, long, messy hair and they rock it! I feel way too tidy with shoulder length hair.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I feel the exact same way! I wish I was more daring with my hair, but I can't do it!

  26. Loving that cut...and thinking it would look great on you!

I'm the worst for changing up my hair...but about a year and a half ago, I went from super long hair to a chin length bob - cutting 16 inches off!!! It was definitely a change and while I'm so glad I did it and I liked it at the time, I've been growing it out ever since. I just like my long hair better. But as some commenters have said - it grows back! A cut like that isn't overly dramatic, so if you truly don't like it, you can throw it in a pony tail and just let it grow.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I used to get nervous about hair cuts but it has always grown back so....go for it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I chopped mine off a month and a half ago and am praying it grows faster than normal! I think the length in that pic is cute and still long. Mine was more Jennifer Aniston when she chopped hers.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Pretty! My hair is the longest it has ever been (probably around the same length as yours). I haven't been afraid to cut my hair short in the past, and have been dying it bright red for the past 6 years. But, now that I have spent so much time growing it out I am nervous about cutting it. I really would like a Michelle Williams-ish pixie cut, but for the first time in my life, I'm afraid to pull the trigger!

  30. the greatest thing about hair is that it grows back! be daring. chop it off. if you don't like it, it will be back to your old style in no time. i always had hair that was just above my shoulders. a few years ago, i chopped it all off (think Posh Spice in 2007) and absolutely loved it. Now realizing that I've never had my hair longer than shoulder length since middle school, I'm growing it out and having fun with that.

    ReplyDelete
  31. That shoulder length, choppy-do is totally a DO! You should go for it! When I was totally sick of my long hair I totally rocked that length and then I think sometimes cutting hair can be addictive and next cut I got I went up to my chin for a bob. hahaha! Ever since I've been growing it out. Shoulder length is always a good look! It's spring! perfect time to do it!

  34. I just went from hair past my shoulders-the longest it had been in 15 years- to a cut similar to Kiera Knightley's in Domino. Best decision I ever made! (The only scary part was I decided to do it in a dive salon I'd never tried before, but it's just hair, right?)

  36. You should do it, a change of hair is like buying a whole new wardrobe in one go!

And did you know you can donate your hair to a charity that supports adults and children suffering hair loss due to cancer treatment amongst other things.

  39. do it!! last june, my hair was long down to my butt! haha. i desperately needed a change...and cut it to my chin!! it was glorious and i felt so light. but i've been growing my hair since then and now it's just past my shoulders... personally, i like my long hair because i feel so much more feminine and i can do more with it:)

change is good and so fun though! xoxo

  40. Oh my goodness, I've been having the same problem lately. My hair has always been super long, which I usually love, but lately I've been adoring old photos of Jennifer Aniston and Ashley Olsen with an "a-line cut." I'm so hesitant to actually go for it though!
Anyway, I think you would ROCK a shoulder length choppy 'do, Joanna!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I took a risk on a shoulder length cut like that a few years ago and loved it so much I transformed it into a bob on my next appointment. Longer in the front and shorter in the back makes it look styled enough when you don't do anything to it and it's SO easy to manage, both in shoulder length and bob form. Give it a shot!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh, you should totally do it! It's such a flattering cut on any face shape, and you'll feel so proud of your daring self afterwards!

Hair can be a big security blanket. Best to take the plunge at some point, if only to get over it. Besides, that is super cute, easy and you could TOTALLY pull it off.

  45. my hair is long! it goes down to about my rib cage. I'm the same way about haircuts, just a few inches scares me. and I've been debating bangs forever but haven't done it yet. I love the style in these photos though!

  47. I used to change my hair up so much more, but now that I have long hair again I cannot get myself to part with it. Though, I keep seeing fun haircuts that are tempting me. I actually had a nightmare the other night that I just took a kitchen knife to my hair and chopped it off so it was super jagged and nasty. Maybe that is a sign that I should get a new style?! The pic you have is super cute!
    Much love,

  48. I want to cut my hair short, but Baguette is kind of obsessed with it. I think it might be too traumatic for her.

But I think that a length right about the base of your neck would look great on you--you could do lots of choppy layers for movement, and it would frame your face really well.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I love her hair! But I think it may be just long hair tucked into her blazer. But that shoulder length choppy cut would look great on you!

  50. I love it! I recently chopped off my long locks after 10 years:

    http://nomadic-d.blogspot.com.es/2012/02/liberated-leopard.html

And as it grew out to shoulder length it ended up like this model's hair, and I absolutely LOVED it. But then I went and got it cut even shorter, and now it's more like ScarJo's hair here:

    http://nomadic-d.blogspot.com.es/2012/01/this-time-really-maybe.html

I don't love it as much, but one ting I've noticed is that with short hair you notice it growing SO fast! So, no big deal, in a month it'll be grazing my shoulders again. Long story short, I say, Go for it! I feel so free and liberated and fun and adventurous and carefree with my newly short hair. And yes, a new haircut really can do all that for you!

  54. I'm hair-bipolar. When I have short hair I want long hair and when I have long hair I want to lop it all off with a pair of shiny gold scissors (a girl can dream, right?). Right now it's 3/4 of the way down my back (and I'm a tall girl) and very hippie-esque. I plan on dying the ends for Coachella and then cutting a bunch off.

I actually think the Madewell model simply has her hair tucked into her blazer or pinned up into a faux lob but I think this length would look great on you.

I am ballsy with my cuts and I love trying new things. In fact, before I found my beloved hair stylist, I preferred getting my haircut in different countries when I could. Lack of communication=open mind=happy results!

  61. My mom used to always say, "The difference between a good hair cut and a bad hair cut is two weeks." I totally agree with her, it's just hair it will grow back. And even though it may not be able to grow back to what you like in two weeks, after two weeks you generally don't care much any more anyway. I say CUT! CUT! CUT! I drastically change my hair all of the time, it's fun.

  70. I have been pretty brave - I had hair down to the middle of my back and then decided to chop it all off to a super short chop, but the first two stylists I went to refused to do it! Finally I had to get a friend's brother to do it, and luckily he turned out to be super talented! Now he owns a chain of hair salons. The thing about long hair is that most of the time you dont do a 'style' with it. When I have shorter hair people often complement me on it, but they never do when it is long. However, I am in the middle of growing it out! Just past the shoulders now.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I have a feeling this lady's hair is not as short as it may seem. I think it's rather tucked under the blazer or behind her shoulders, with just a few stray strands that may or may not be shorter. I think the cut that she's trying to "fake" here would look great on you though!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I know what you mean with 'being a wuss'. I used to cut my hair without blinking an eye and so it always was max. shoulder lenght. But since I've grown it out (it goes to the middle of my back right now) I'm crying for every inch my hair dresser has to cut off...
But you are right this messy bob looks super cute!!

  73. Short haircuts are perfect for spring & summer! The good thing about hair is it always grows back :) I had hair down the middle of my back and cut it all off for a short bob and side bangs. I missed it the second the strands hit the floor, but now when I look back on pictures I wonder if I should go short again. The grass is always greener :)

  74. I think you could totally pull it off! I always used to dye my hair in the sink, sometimes to the point of huge chunks breaking off! I once tried to relax my hair at home and fried off several inches. I've cut my own bangs many times. Once I went from chest length hair to about 2 inches long as well! BUT ever since then I've grown my hair back out to chest length, only trimming occasionally and I haven't dyed it... and it's turned me into a hair wuss! I would love to try a wild colour or fun cut, but I just can't bring myself to do it anymore!

  78. Do it! Mid-length hair always looks so chic and a new haircut will leave you feeling refreshed. :)

  89. Dooooo it! That cut would look beautiful on you! I just trimmed mine, it feels great, but the stylist wasn't paying attention :(

    ReplyDelete
  90. Try a faux bob instead - it actually looks like that's what the model is doing and leaving some layers out.

It's way easier to tell if you like shorter hair once it's pinned and your hands are out of the way :)

    ReplyDelete
  91. Cut it!
Hair down to the middle of your back does nothing for you but weigh you down and draw the eyes down. You want to bring focus to your face!
A shoulder length cut is the PERFECT length for anything: you can have it down and textured, in an updo, and its still long enough for a pony!
Plus it seems to be the in style cut right now.
Seriously consider a cut, you will feel fresh and light and revived!

    ReplyDelete
  92. I have been considering a similar hair cut myself - a sort of graduated bob with bangs. It's so scary to cut though! Maybe I'll start with bangs....

  94. I think the style looks really fresh and pretty. And her face shape looks like yours. I say go for it! After I had my long locks cropped to a bob, I love it. I, too, am always a little nervous, but I'm glad i took the risk. After all, it will grow. :)

  95. Ok, this post really got me.

I cut my hair in december from long nice wavy blonde hair to down the chin. I think shorter looks more mature and i didn´t want this girly look anymore since i look pretty young - i am turning 29 soon and in the cinema last year they asked if i am 18 already!!!

So every now and then i am really regretting what i´ve done. But then i see that i can do so much more hair styles!
Also you get braver with trying something new. I am currently thinking about bangs. Always been too scared but now i think i will try - why not?
    Always remember: it grows again!

  96. I love messing with my hair. I never get too attached to it because it always grows back. I screwed up when I colored it a while ago. My hair looked like a brass door knob. I ended up having to dye it a dark, chocolate brown, but after a few months, my normal hair color came back. I felt like a different person with such dark hair as opposed to a lighter color.

I wouldn't be so nervous! It's just hair...you'd be beautiful if you were bald :)

  97. i've had my hair loooong for years (it was down to the small of my back, and sooo damaged) and i finally decided to take the plunge in january and chopped it all off to shoulder length! it looks a lot like that model's hair, actually. it was the best decision - my hair feels so much lighter and healthier, and while i'm probably going to grow it out long-ish again, i think it was really good for me to switch things up and enjoy a little change. i say go for it! the spring is a great time to cut your hair shorter and enjoy a little breeze on your neck :)

  100. Cool hair cut! I've always been weird with my hair! I'll go really dramatic and then go back to conservative. I trade off almost every time! I have a twin sister and we used to do the same style. Every time. But now she sticks with her long straight locks. I went crazy and chopped it off short! So I'm rocking the growing out version of a bob, but I try to keep it interesting. As I get older though, I'm getting less adventurous. Yike! Maybe it's a good thing, though?

    ReplyDelete
  101. I've had a pixie cut for two years... yes BEFORE Emma Watson... and I'm addicted to it. I can't go four weeks without feeling like my hair is too long. I had REALLY long hair before, but cutting it made me feel more confident, edgy and sassy. I would highly recommend it. =)

    ReplyDelete
  102. Oh my gosh do it! That would look lovely on you. Remember it's just hair, it'll grow back! But always give yourself 3 days to a week before you decide whether you like your new haircut. Everyone's hair reacts differently to being cut (mine draws up and freaks out for a while) but it'll settle (and you'll get used to it) and your opinion usually changes.

  108. The model's hair looks like it's shoulder length in the front, and perhaps longer in the back. I think that would look pretty and fresh if the front is done right and looks like it fades into the longer layers with ease.

  110. I love how Jcrew/Madewell style the models. They always look so chic, effortless and natural. Their styling has been my makeup/hair inspiration for some time now. I think the haircut would look great on you! I just recently agonized over bangs or no bangs after growing them out for six months. They were long finally, but I wasn't that happy with my hair. Just chopped really blunt heavy bangs and I've been getting so many compliments on them! Sometimes a new hairstyle, though it's a big leap of faith, is just what you need to refresh your look.

For twenty years, I had long, layered hair. I had always wanted to cut it short, but never could get up the nerve. Finally, about 3 months ago, I did it! I got it all lopped off and loved it! It was great for a change, now I've decided to grow it back out.

  112. I am one of those do it yourself-ers but I have to say this model looks like she has longer hair just tucked into her shirt.. Usually people who have had long hair for as long as they can remember, will end up just growing it back out..

  113. What a cute hairstyle, I have really long wavy hair and to scared to try something new and cut it that short. But nevertheless, the haircut looks fresh and chill!

  114. I am all for haircuts.

You have a face that looks sooooo good with a short, blunt cut. Short: to your chin!

    Yes????

  115. It's hair! It grows back!
My one rule for my hair is that I HAVE to be able to pull it back out of my face. I've learned that through years of trial and error. That's all, though!

  116. I prefer long hair, but I think bobs and shorter cuts really suit some people. I have quite a round face so it doesn't suit me - but I love it on this model!

  118. I am a total wimp when it comes to haircuts. My hair never changed all through high school, cut straight across about halfway down my back.
Then I decided I needed a change, and got a shoulder length layered cut the week before I went away to college.
That lasted a while, but I finally decided I needed a real change. I went to my hairdresser with a screen shot from this Norah Jones video, and cut my hair super short with bangs. It was terrifying, but I loved the way it turned out and I'm not as scared of drastic haircuts anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  119. My hair has always been so curly. I never worried about length, I would grow and cut with absolute and equal ease. Then, with each pregnancy {I have a son who is 6, and a daughter who is 16 months-today!} my hair became more and more straight. Now I have beach waves occasionally, but am less confident with this straight stuff. I'm growing it long, because I don't know what else to do! I adore this cut, though.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Every time I do a drastic cut, I regret it and end up growing it back out. My hairs goes pretty much one way - straight and flat - so I've decided just to go with it. Life is too short to spend a lot of time and money trying to make it do something it won't, especially in the heat & humidity of summer in the south. I looked through all the pics of that model, and I started wondering if she actually cut her hair? I couldn't find one that really showed the back or side, and the way it falls looks similar to how mine falls when I'm trying to tuck it up to see how it will look short. Interesting.

  121. her hair is tucked into her jacket/shirt. a real shoulder length haircut is cute - do it!

  122. You should try it!

I've always worn my hair super super long as an adult and then last year right before the holidays I chopped it off. I really mourned my long curls and for some ridiculous reason I thought I didn't look sexy anymore. And then it just grew (pun!) on me and I loved it. For starters it takes a quarter of the time for me to style it (so important with a 21 month old!) and it's not only sexy but also cute and fun and flirty. I just went for a trim (today!) and I'm newly in love with it. I'm thinking of growing it out again but for now I think it's perfect for spring and the hot summer months that are coming. Plus I love that I an wear big earrings and they don't get lost in all my hair:)

    ReplyDelete
  123. I get so bored with my hair so easily. It's rare I don't want some highlights or a darker shade, lighter shade, long bangs, etc. every time I go. Usually I like the results or it's something I can remedy the next time I'm in. However, this last time, not sure where the misunderstanding took place but it' NOT what I thought I would be getting. And now it's layered all over and short, ouch!

Do you have any suggestions on how to style a cute idea gone wrong until it grows out? So far I've worn a hat or pulled it behind my ears with some bobby pins. (Either one not a really good look)

Any help would be sooooo appreciated.

    Thanks!

  124. Sorry, I got so caught up in my hair-mess that I forgot to say, yes, go for it. Even though I've had some mistakes along the way, it's still fun to change it up. I love it when you look in the mirror and see a totally different style. Start slow and go for a shorter length then add choppy layers.

    ReplyDelete
  125. This model's hair is super cute!
I'm really loving the whole messy bob hairdo.

I've been contemplating cutting my hair super short for a while but I've held back from doing so. i feel like my features are too odd for me to look good with short hair so I've kept my hair long for most of my life. Every few years, I'll go crazy and cut everything off before regretting it.
It's funny how I want short hair when I have long hair and I want long hair when I have short hair :)

I think you should definitely try this haircut. It would look super cute on you and I'm sure there are tons of cute ways to style it!

Keep us posted on your hair. I always love seeing how other people rock their hairdos!

  128. I am a wuss! I am fussy with hairdressers, and when I say I only want half an inch cut off, I only want half an inch cut off.

Currently I am leaving my 'bangs' to grow- though it's a side fringe- so it comes to my nose rather than fringe length for the summer, so my layers will be longer too, but I always struggle to explain myself to a hair dresser, though I have a good one now who makes my hair look pretty anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I'm a huge wuss too! I went four I think three haircuts intending to get bangs before I actually let the stylist cut them. She'd get all ready, line up the scissors, and I would be all, "NO! DON'T!"

    So yeah. Wussy.

Was very, very pleased when I finally let her cut them though...

  130. When I was a freshman in high school I chopped off all my hair, attempting a pixie cut. Instead I looked exactly like a boy, and it has taken me four years to grow it back down to the middle of my back. I am decidedly less daring with my hair now, and still need to get it layered now that I have the length I want. xD

    ReplyDelete
  131. I just did it on Wednesday. I've had long hair for the last four years, and I got sick of it and chopped it to shoulder length. Don't regret a thing. So liberating. I wanted to go shorter when the stylist had finished. JUST DO IT!!!

  132. Do it and have fun with it, it always grow back !

I just cut mine and couldn't be happier ! It's less time consuming than longer locks. I know in a couples of month I will decide to grow it back, to cut it again a couple of months later. I just love to change my hairstyle !

  140. I had very long hair for like 12 years, and then last year I just decided I was sick of it looking limp and bleah so I chopped it off (it was halfway down my back) to a chin length graduated bob!

Best decision ever cos I don't think I'll ever grow it out past shoulder length again! :) it's just hair, it'll grow back!

    Go for it, Joanna!! :)

  141. I am typically cautious...although, the last time I finally went for bangs and now I LOVE them, and I have received tons of compliments!

  144. I was never a big wuss about my hair until recently. I have been growing it out for two years and just wanted to even up my layers to grow them out. The stylist messed up my cut and cut 5 inches off instead of the 2 1/2. I started to cry and asked her to get my mom who was waiting in the lobby! She tried to blame me for not being clear enough even though I gave her a picture of the cut and now I'm afraid to get my hair cut again! My advice would be to go to a stylist that you trust and who will listen to you before making a big change.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Looks like her hair is actually longer and pulled back loosely or tucked under. See how it curves under?

    ReplyDelete
  146. I've done just about everything: hair down my back, bobs, pixies, edgy Sassoon cuts, even a buzz cut! I've dyed it reddish, purplish, darker brown (darker than my normal), black, and I'm currently going lighter for the first time. I even had pink streaks in college.

Personally, any time I start to feel nervous or worried by the idea of cutting off my hair, I go get my hair cut. It's kind of a bit of tough love for myself - I don't like the idea of becoming trapped, of feeling dependent upon my hair for my identity.

  150. I used to have very short hair and now I have very long hair... but I always want to have something in the middle. Where I live it rains a lot. And I mean A LOT. That is why I either have it really short or very long, so it doesn't go wherever each little hair wants.
Um... I'm thinking that maybe the problem it's not my hair but the place where I live. I have to move! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  151. That's the great thing about hair - it always grows back (or can be re-dyed)! I love changing my hair, but usually commit to a color, a cut or a growing program for a few years. In the last few, I grew out my platinum bob and now have long, coppery locks. That's the fun of being a girl! I'm antsy for something drastic after such a long, painful grow-out. I'm thinking dark blue tips...

I've done the "fake bob" before, for a holiday party (and my hair is halfway down my back as well).

I don't think this is a cut.... if you look closely you can see it's a super loose bun in the back. Her hair is probably "model" length so about what you have now. Maybe ask a professional hair stylist friend- but I think you can do this and not face a pair of scissors!! From one long-maned brunette to another, XOXO

  162. Generally, I am fairly cautious myself. But the times I've taken the plunge I always found it refreshing - put a spring in my step, allowed me to try some new hairdo and hair products (or leave some behind!). Right now I am growing my hair out again and dealing with the long hair is kinda getting to me.

Which brings me to a question...I LOVE your hair tutorials and posts about your own hair - but to be honest, I feel I have the THICKEST HAIR in the world! I'm not sure I can rock those cute heidi braids without looking like Liz Lemon's intrepretation of Princess Leia on 30 Rock!

Do you have tips for BIG hair? I'm not talking curly fro (though I am sure there are ladies out there wanting tips on that!)...but more like wavy hair that is so thick (and at times a bit frizzy), that it becomes a force to be reckoned with. The amazing woman agrees (about the force). I really only like my hair when it's wet! And serum/defrizzing only helps a bit.

Thanks, Joanna, for all your sage, womanly advice!

  166. well, I've been having my curly hair very (seriously, very!) long since I was 12 (and now I'm 26!). a month ago, I decided that it was time for a change! I trusted my hairdresser (oh my, a person that you trust is very important!) and I did it! and now I enjoy the shoulder-length of my hair! and to celebrate my short-kind of-hair, I also had my first tattoo on the back of my neck! I'm even thinking of cutting them even shorter for the summer! I'll say go for it! For me at least it was releaving and fun! I believe that a long bob would look very nice on you! 168. Almost two years ago i buzzed my hair.... buzzed. For a day or two I considered it a tragedy, I mourned the loss of my hair! Looking back, it was the best thing to do. I look at pictures now and realize that at worst I looked funky in my short short hair. It was fun and daring. Not sure I would do it again but the cut did teach me that hair does indeed grow back sooner than you think. One day you have really short hair, and before you realize it, you can tie it up and play with it again. So to this fun shoulder length hair I say, "ahead with it!"

    ReplyDelete
  169. I just cut off 6-7 inches off. But to ease into the transition I tucked my hair into my shirt collar and let only the shorter layers out. Just like in the Madewell photos you posted....You can also try a faux bob. They have greta tutorial on youtube.

    Good luck!
