Relationship tip: Keeping the sparks flying

Alex and I recently started doing something new...

When we're going out to dinner, instead of meeting at home first, we now meet at the restaurant. Here's why...

Scenario #1: We meet at our apartment first. Toby's running around, we're getting dressed in front of each other, I pull on tights (or Spanx!), we share the bathroom and brush our teeth side-by-side, we ask each other those Married People Questions...Can you pass me the deodorant? Is my shirt wrinkled? Will you buzz up the sitter? Wait, I need to pee...

As Toby would say, Wah waah. :)

Scenario #2: We meet at the restaurant. Pushing open the door, I always feel a secret thrill as I span the bustling room. Butterflies in my stomach, I hope I look nice with mascara-ed eyelashes and strategically flushed cheeks. I spot Alex, looking attractive (and even a little intimidating) perched at the bar with a beer, wearing his suit from work, smelling like cologne, waiting for me to come kiss his neck and say hello.

Meeting at a restaurant whisks us back to our early dating days and kicks off a romantic vibe for the rest of the evening. It's a little thing, but sometimes life is about the little things, right?
(Btw, have you ever seen this funny scene from When A Man Loves a Woman? They had the right idea.)

What funny little things (or big things!) do you do to keep the sparks flying in your relationships? I'd love to hear...

P.S. Another funny sex tip, and why NOT to give your partner a massage...

  1. this is such a great idea. i think we're going to have to try this.

other small things that we do? we put our phones away when we're out at restaurant. i know it seems to trivial, but because we live together, dinner's out kind of get taken for granted if it's just "any other" dinner.

    love this post.

  4. putting your phones away is such a great one. it's those little things!!

  5. Definitely agree on this one! Whenever my husband and I have a 'date', I try to get ready separately. I like to take time to do my hair and look nice, and while I'm getting ready I am envisioning the look on his face when he sees me for the 'first' time. That excitement is not there if he sees me struggling into pantyhose:)

  6. Great Idea! The only question is, does that leave getting read AND getting the kid(s) ready by your self for the babysitter?...That seems to be the biggest stress for me and by the time it's done, I don't even feel like getting ready to go out!

    ReplyDelete
  7. this IS a great idea!

as we were dating, we would have lots of conversations in the car. when we moved in together and got married, we would go straight into the house...not letting "the mood" linger that while longer. now, we stay in the car a bit longer (yup, outside our house!) to keep talking, anticipating what more the evening will hold ;)

    thanks for sharing!

  9. aw great post!! i'm still in my early dating days, but i will keep this in my back pocket for later on :)

  10. YES! This!!! Great tip Joanna!

Hubs and I have "alter egos" of ourselves that will meet at a restaurant when we want to start a fire with the sparks. It's... adventuresome. ;o)

    ReplyDelete
  11. Oh my gosh, my hubby and I try to do the same thing! You are totally right Joanna -- it makes it feel like the 'beginning' and gives you a reason, as a woman, to get excited to get dressed up, which is one of the perks of Friday and Saturday nights :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Great idea! Especially when we go to somewhere in our neighborhood and can walk or take the train.

    ReplyDelete
  13. this is such a great idea! since our recent move, i have a closet room. i try to stay in there until im done getting ready for date night, to up the wow factor :)

    thanks for sharing!

  14. Nothing like seeing your partner enter a room (not in your home!) to stir up the butterflies :) This is great advice.

Also, I agree with putting the phones away.

Finally, sneaking in a kiss each day that lasts longer than 5 seconds takes me back to the early dating days.

    ReplyDelete
  15. This is an awesome idea, it makes the whole evening much more special :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Along these lines, have one of you pick the meeting place and keep it secret until just before...then send the location via text. Ups the ante with another layer of intrigue.

    ReplyDelete
  17. What a brilliant idea! I will definitely suggest this to Tim :) We have a dog at home though, so meeting after work means that many more hours that he's alone and unable to go out, but maybe we can work around that somehow.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Love love love this idea. And it's so simple! A great example of how do you don't need to do anything crazy/expensive/outlandish to keep sparks flying.

    ReplyDelete
  19. thanks for this! just a great idea. we need it since we've been co-sleeping with our sweet son for 5 months, now! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  20. We have to do this because of our crazy schedules, but I never thought of it as romantic before now. You just made lemonade out of lemons for me!

Keep sparks flying? He's admittedly the more romantic one. His newest thing is laying on my side of the bed before I get in so it will be warm for me. Little things like that remind me how lucky I am.

  21. This is great and made me smile. I was just in NY and I kept hoping I would run into you :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. SO TRUE!! We do this and it feels so fresh all over again!!

Another great tip is just doing things by yourselves, new things, things you don't want to do with your partner but things that will challenge yourself and keep it fresh on an individual basis so you keep revealing yourself as the years go on! Remember how exciting it was to find out about your partner and what they liked when you first began dating? It doesn't have to stop!!

  26. I love this so much and it makes COMPLETE sense. Just yesterday my parents told me that starting this weekend they are not watching television for four weeks! Just books, hanging out, having conversation and playing games. Good way to hit the reset button I think.

  30. Oh, Joanna--I just LOVE this idea and would totally love to implament it when:

    (1) I start getting more than two hours of sleep at a stretch (I have a 4 1/2 month old, need I say more) and

    (2) When I can tear myself away from said 4 1/2 month old long enough to actually go out to dinner with my husband (I work full-time out of the house, you see and so every second with Kalen is precious) and

    (3) If I ever EVER feel like a sexy woman again. It's not looking good....

    ReplyDelete
  31. My boyfriend and I have started doing this! We have been together for six years, so naturally things get a little methodical- but this really does help.

    ReplyDelete
  32. We are going to start doing this!

Sometimes I'll wear lingerie and thigh highs under my clothes when I know we'll be out with people/in public for hours because when he discovers my secret outfit and we're in public we can't stand the anticipation. It makes for some heavy eye-flirting and sometimes a sexy rendezvous somewhere you'd never expect.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Great idea! I could see how this could be so much more exciting!

  34. Ah! It's totally true - Sparks will fly in that old familiar, wonderful way, the way they did when we first started dating. How often do you guys do date nights? I feel like they are super important, but sometimes really tough to fit into...well...life! Oi!
I do absolutely love the intimacy we share with zero shyness and reservations but it definitely does diminish the sexy-time, and let's be honest - who doesn't want sexy-time?! These tips are so helpful! Thanks!

  40. We have our sitter come over 30 minutes before we need to leave. She keeps our THREE kids occupied while I/we get ready, plus it makes the transition easier.

Love the idea of meeting up for a date - it really does work. Hubby once had a work thing in San Francisco, and I took the train down alone to meet him for the night. So cool to greet him in the middle of downtown SF. xo

    ReplyDelete
  41. Love this idea and can't wait to do this. My boyfriend and I are long distance for a year and we started WINEsdate, every wednesday we google hangout and we each make a fancy cheese/fruit plate and have a "date".

    ReplyDelete
  42. My husband and I do the same - but we meet for lunch during the work day downtown! We have a two-year-old and have been married 5 years, so it's fun to have a little date in the middle of work, usually at a nicer restaurant, and looking a little nicer too (read: not sweats). So fun!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I love this idea! Unfortunately, we both work at home right now, so it doesn't quite work for us. (we usually need to drive to wherever we're going.) we have started taking each other on surprise dates--ie one of us plans the whole thing and it's a surprise for the other. Really fun.

  50. you are so right about this. some days i meet my husband during the day when we're working in the same neighborhood, and even though we're not meeting up for a date or to do anything interesting, just the fact of meeting him someplace outside the home makes me jittery and giggly. it's so fun.

I like to imagine I'm way more hideous than I am, then when I'm hooking up with someone, they seem relatively hotter.

It's takes less mental effort and is more effective than imagining that they're actually hotter.

  52. i got chills just reading this! i am in a strange place in my life where everyone around me is either unhappy/giving up on their marriages, or are single and vocally anti-marriage/commitment (i'm perennially single), so it is SO refreshing to read about everyone's efforts to keep commitment exciting after being together for a long time. keep it up, ladies! :)

  60. what a genius idea! my husband and I are waaay overdue for a date night. I'll have to think of a way to make this happen.

Just watched the video clip and it made me so giddy! What a great scene. I'll have to watch that movie.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Love this!

We also ASK each other on dates - not just plan. I'll text/call him and ask if he'll go on a date with me and then plan accordingly. Again... it adds just enough of those same butterflies.

    ReplyDelete
  62. This is such a great idea! I know I always get excited when I meet up with my boyfriend at a restaurant or bar. I love that moment of excitement and anticipation as I scan the room to find him!

    ReplyDelete
  63. we had these glorious visions (before we were married) of sitting on the couch and reading poetry or novels to each other at the end of the day, and then, for the first few months, we just felt like we wanted to zone out (that is, recuperate from the last year!!) at the end of our days. now, though, we've gotten into it! the bookcase in our living room holds our "fun" books--poetry, novels, fiction--and we pour glasses of wine or scotch and take turns reading sonnets or short stories.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Great idea! We need to do this more often, its always so much fun! I love that scene from the movie...I think I need to watch that movie again now!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. i love this so much. while there is totally something to be said for being 100% comfortable and intimate with one another, i think it is important to be reminded of the butterflies :)

  66. Love this idea. Will have to try it.
We have date night on Wed, pretty much every week. What we do is trade off on who books the date ie) movie, a play, comedy etc...that person is the date planner and has everything sort of ready to roll. its actually a great thing, because we both put effort into doing something new and it shows thought, i love it when conor plans something, its so cute.

I LOVE this idea! We don't even have the added stress/anti-aphrodesiac of children yet, but we still need to work on keeping the romance in our marriage. We have recently started making sure we have at least one date night a month - dinner, a movie, whatever, as long as it is us spending time together our of the apartment and far, far away from the sofa and tv - but this would make it even more fun and interesting, especially if we do it on a Friday after a rough week. Thanks!

  73. It's small things like that that keep things fresh. It's a suggestion I'd heard before but forgotten. Thanks for the reminder!

    ReplyDelete
  74. I absolutely agree that meeting at the restaurant is the way to go...I still get excited to see my boyfriend when we meet up for a date rather than get ready together.

    ReplyDelete
  75. We do something similar...(we're married with two little kids) instead of wah-wahing together about what we should do on a date night, we alternate planning the date. So one of us in charge of everything and the other is along for the surprises. It feels like a first date nearly every time.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Fantastic idea! This would prevent my hubby from rushing me out the door. :-)

My hubby and I find that we connect best when we're unplugged, away from distractions.. many times it is when we take very long walks together, or just going to a local pub for the night, sitting at the bar and chatting, or enjoying leisurely breakfast & coffee over books at a coffee shop will often turn to long and meaningful conversation.

    ReplyDelete
  77. loving this idea! how special and lovely!

I also want to try something new to keep things fresh. We're new to Chicago so we're going to try to go to a new neighborhood at least once a month to check out the scene, restaurants, anything, just to get out of going to the same places on our street. I am really excited!

That is very sweet. My boyfriend and I are doing the long-distance thing and it's pretty exciting dressing up to take the train and having him waiting for me at the platform. Even if a few hours later we're just in bed watching Law & Order and eating old pizza ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  83. What a great idea, thank you! My boyfriend and I do long distance, so when we're together, we do everything together. Brushing teeth, ironing shirts, etc. Maybe we'll try this next time!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Okay, that movie scene was ADORABLE! Just a question though... who takes care of the sitter and the kids then?

    ReplyDelete
  85. I feel the exact same way when I meet my husband for a date.

One of our little sparks applies to the very same scenario. My husband and I are ALWAYS late because one of his favorite things to do is to watch me get ready. He just lays on the bed and watches as I dress, do my hair and make up. He says its like watching the final touches to a masterpiece or like seeing a beautiful flower open up. But, of course by that the time I'm all done, he hasn't even started getting ready! So its a mad dash for him to throw himself together!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Aww how adorable! I love that idea. I've been trying to think of something like this to spark up our date nights. It's hard!

A few things we have done throughout our marriage (about 5 years) are things like, have sex at 4am spontaneously (or with the lights on!), surprise eachother with gifts, do small thoughtful things like sometimes I put quarters in his wallet for coffee or a coke at work since he never carries cash.

We definitely need help on our dates. Recently we went to a jazz club for the first time and it was definitely a new spin on date night so maybe we'll do things like that more often.

  101. I love this idea! I'm going to try it out. We don't talk about our baby on our dates, or really during adult time at all. We maintain common interests, so we always have a lot to talk about like music, books, even fashion and food. We talk about future travels and places we want to see together, like when we were dating. It really keeps the spark going. He's my best friend and we're always surprising one another. I think our daughter would prefer this over being the topic of conversation, even though she's only twenty-two months.

  107. This is such a lovely idea! My boyfriend and I have been living together for 6 months and I realized the other day he sees me from pre-shower to date-ready and everything in between. Totally lackluster. We're trying this this weekend!

  108. I love it JO:) During the week me and my fiance are so buys with our jobs that we often don't see each other in the evening: he is working sometimes long hours and I'm already in bed when he's back; or the other way when I'm somewhere in the City busy with my event...Anyway, welcome to the City/London life!
That'w why we are trying to celebrate our weekends and Friday nights-Fridays are only for US! Me and my other half, glass of red in bed with some great music and trying to talk what happened during the week...Saturday it's our breakfast date-I love new places, a bit organic nothing modern look restaurant! So breakfast and walk along the river. Every weekend we are trying to do something different, new and surprising:) i love it and it helps to keep the sparks that started 6 years ago:)xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  116. this is a brilliant idea, especially for those who live in a city like NYC. My husband and I live in the country, so a long drive home separately after a nice time out together would be a bummer... but I will still embrace the spirit of the suggestion (i.e., getting ready separately)!

    ReplyDelete

  118. So funny, I was just thinking about this (or kinda this!). We had a wedding to go to last Friday night...I had to work a little late so I ended up getting all dressed up in the office and meeting my husband there. I totally had that "butterflies" feeling walking in and looking around for him, and then when he saw me he said "wow, you look so pretty" and i was thinking about how nice that felt! I'm going to try this out for date night. Thanks for sharing :)

  119. We are still waiting to see how life will change with baby, but one thing we love to do now is breakfast dates. My husband doesn't have to be at work til around 10:30, so we often go somewhere cute in the neighborhood for lattes and bagels or croissants and have some of our best conversations there.

  123. My husband and dated long-distance so we had a lot of fun times on SKYPE. Now, even when he's just in the other room on his computer, I'll call him on SKYPE. It usually leads to some giggles and gratitude for each other. The little things . . . .

  124. Love this! I don't have a husband, but I do understand the lovely feeling of walking up to a dapperly dressed man in a restaurant or bar and smelling his cologne and just generally being happy to be the one he's waiting for. Such a great idea to do that, even after you've locked the man down! :)

My husband and I have 5 minute make-out sessions. One of us just asks "Wanna make out for 5 minutes?" and it is nearly impossible to turn down or be turned down. Everyone has five minutes for a little old school making out, right?

    I LOVE your blog!

  131. This is a great idea! My husband and I are newly married and appreciate advice like this on how to keep things exciting! It's so easy to be lazy about spending time together or even just staying in. You're right there's something about getting dressed up- feeling pretty and seeing your man looking pretty too.

My husband works A TON and so the little time we get together is precious. We took a "staycation"- stayed a hotel away from home, didn't turn on the TV- got shnazzed up and went out on the town a little bit. So fun to feel flirty and cute together.

  132. I really love this idea and can't wait to try it. I know what you mean about the Spanx. Since moving in together, I make my boyfriend leave the room when I put on Spanx. I just can't do that to him. Or our relationship.

  134. Awesome idea and i think we got to start doing this. There will be one small problem though.. i am terrible with reaching on time and my husband is even worse...

  135. That's such a great idea Joanna! Last night I did the same with my husband. We live on the main street of our neighborhood. I caught the bus that takes me about 10 blocks from our apartment instead of the one that lets me off across the street from it. I was a little bummed and called my husband and to meet me for dinner (so we wouldn't spend all evening inside the apartment...). We decided to both walk towards each other and go to the restaurant nearest to wherever we meet. It was a fun way to add a little element of surprise to our evening & we ended up having some delicious sushi! It's going to be our new tradition because feels more like a real date, keeps us from getting caught up with home things, and is fun!

    ReplyDelete
  136. You're right. Even without children, there is something so nice about meeting one's partner somewhere else, to walk in and see not just the person you're used to sharing home life with, but the person as he exists beyond that. I love it.

I met with my husband for dinner after work one evening and it totally did feel like meeting up on a date. I was seated waiting on the phone with him explaining where to find me. Moments later, a hot guy on his phone shows up and I realize it's him. :)

  153. I do this quite often with my live-in boyfriend. I love it because I get to play my music and dance around while I get ready. Have a glass of wine in the bathroom while I'm putting on my make-up. It reminds me of when I lived in my apt before moving in with him. I love ME time. Also.....this is a sweet TIP...I did this a few weeks ago. My man was having a tough week at work and I sent him a stunning bouquet of flowers. It was awesome. He said the delivery man walked in and saw him first and asked him to sign for them. My man said he thought "wow, somebody in the office got beautiful flowers", and asked the delivery guy who they were for and the guy looked down at his signature and said "They are for you". He called me right after. It was out of the blue and he loved it. Who says you can't send men flowers?! xo

Lift truck operators do not need to travel from their work area to the tubular batteryroom to change out batteries, saving thousands of dollars in lost productivity. My boyfriend and are both in a new city, so we've made a deal to sight-see every saturday. Also, we've taken on a new project where he draws my portrait every saturday, and our plan is to see the progress after a while. We also go on various trips together, and one of them is to go to a new country and learn a new language for couple weeks while sight-seeing.

I'm now logging the different saturday activities we've been working on on my blog~
