It's perfect for spring and fall days, or cool summer evenings. Tomboyish and laid-back. I love it. The vest we have is sold out, but this Barbour vest is similar; and also this Belstaff one is super chic. Have you ever worn a vest?

Do or don't: Vests

I love vests. The north face puffer is my absolute favorite.. I have worn a green puffer with a sequin pencil skirt before..a la jcrew style. Why not rock the vests?
ReplyDeleteI love vests for the same reason! No over-heating, but I keep a warm upper body. Love it.
ReplyDeleteI love a good puffy vest! And you look very cute in yours.
ReplyDeletedo do do! i love them, but i don't know that i have enough gusto to actually wear one! but i think they're so cute!
ReplyDeletedrop by allister bee soon!
I love them! I had one in fake fur once, back in the days when they were in... I love that one.
ReplyDeleteI love it when you post pictures of yourself and your cute family. You have such great style - you should do it more!
ReplyDeleteLove my vest it feels like a snuggly hug on a cool day.
ReplyDeleteI love them, specially the green ones, so classy...!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant rationale! Never wore them, actually, but I love how the look.
ReplyDeletexoxo
i LOVE vests. it took me awhile to be brave and wear the one i HAD to buy out but i love mine. and i think everyone should have at least one!

I wear mine with a hoodie, wool sweater, or a light nylon moto jacket. I love Cate and Dave's idea though – why not fancy it up?
ReplyDeleteCan't live without vests - the Marmot puffy and the regular fleece vests are fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI love ALL sorts of vests, but was especially excited to score a super cute puffy vest from Anna Sui for Target a while back.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm totally one of those people who pile on the extra blankets, but then kick one whole leg out- that's a great way to describe the magic of vests!
I find the most challenging part finding the perfect layer to wear under your vest- light weight hoodies, long sleeves with stripes and your super cute combo are all good!
i've worn vests for years for that exact reason. love them!
ReplyDeleteI agree, I never knew how to wear them exactly and just mainly used mine for running in the colder months. I am happy to say I just wore one for the first time and styled it based on what Ive seen around the web and blogs and loved it! Cozy and comfy! -JB.
ReplyDeletehttp://madewithlovebyjackieb.blogspot.com/
you look great in your vest. i love it!
ReplyDeleteI used to say "NO!" to puffy vests,
ReplyDeletebut my husband convinced me to buy one with a hood a year ago and I love it to death! I think they're cute and keep you warm!
A do for sure!
ReplyDeleteYep! I love wearing vests. Here in Houston, you can wear them a lot. We really don't have too cold of a Winter so wearing a long sleeve T-shirt and a vest over is the perfect mix. You stay cool but still feel cozy warm.
ReplyDeletewww.dylandrake.blogspot.com
i love the look of vests! adorable for spring and fall for sure. you look cute!
ReplyDeletei love vests. but, then again, i'm an engineer, and i think every, single engineer has at least one in his/her wardrobe... the nice thing about mine (at least the ones that don't have icky embroidered logos on them) is that i can wear them to work and look like an enginerd (yes, that's engineer and nerd married together) or... i can pair one with leggings and a slouchy hat and look totally cute.
ReplyDeletegreat post.
vests are a do.
I'm a little bit embarrassed to admit this but I own 5 vests. YIKES! I, obviously, love them but usually wear them when I'm outdoors hiking or snowshoeing.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, not sure how I feel about them, but they're cute!
ReplyDeleteUm, I swear by vests. Don't even get me started. I think I have 7 or 8. Maybe 10. I bought my first one in 2004 at the Gap...and I still have it. Give me a vest over a coat any day. Every time I think I should weed out my vest collection, I absolutely can't do it. I try, I promise I try. I have specific vests for every occasion/season/temperature/outfit. There is not a single article of clothing I depend on as much as I do my vests. I'd have to say Eddie Bauer has the best vests. How do I know my boyfriend loves me? He tells me all the time I have too many, yet for Christmas he got me a grey wool EB vest I'd been lusting over for months.
ReplyDeleteAnd now I've typed "vest" so many times it doesn't even look like a word anymore. I need to stop before I start making horrible investment puns.

It looks super cute on you! I'd love to get one in that color, or a navy version. Perfect for this oddly warm weather we're having here!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration to dig mine out of the closet! When my older sister first got her license we would ride around with the heat on full blast and the windows open. We were made for vests!
ReplyDeleteHttp://ncdots.blogspot.com
i love vests! unfortunately i dont love them on me! i find they always add extra bulkyness and make me look bigger then i am!
ReplyDeletebut for hiking - i would definitely wear one!
I have a great vintage vest, Charlie's Angels style, that I know I will never ever part from.
ReplyDeleteI totally stick my leg out when I sleep under a cosy cover! It makes sense that a vest would keep you warm, but not suffocate you. Love the idea. By the way, you look so chic in these pictures. Bet Toby would be cute in a vest, too!
ReplyDeletethanks for all these cute comments:) (and thanks, laura!!) maybe i'll get toby a vest. we can all wear them at the same time! nerds!:)
ReplyDeleteTo vest or not to vest, that is the question. I always go for vesting. Puffy's are the bomb!
ReplyDelete-Avery

my husband and i never wore vests, we couldn't quite fit them in, until about a year ago when we started traveling in our vintage airstream and were in & out of various climates constantly..now we can't live without them {i consistently have to turn away from cute new vests, such as many from jcrew, and remind myself while newly essential, one or two will suffice}. you have a lovely blog, i've only recently discovered you and have greatly enjoyed playing catch up. xo, tiffany
ReplyDeleteI LOVE how you said the vest *we* have. Shared garments are the BEST.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE my puffy vest! I felt the same way. Until I wore my moms. It keeps your core warm but they are not restricting like a jacket. As I get older my tastes have open up to so many more options.
ReplyDeletei have been wearing puffer vests for almost ten years now! needless to say, i've fallen victim to lots of criticism over the years from a few vest haters... but my love is unwavering. here's why... have you ever biked in a vest?! they're practically made for the occasion!
ReplyDeleteYour front stoop pictures are so adorable! I love how New York it looks too- you should do fashion on the stoop posts more often!
ReplyDeleteYou look adorable! I love a great vest. It seems odd, but if your core is warm, the rest of you feels warmer. Even with your arms out.
ReplyDeletexoxo,
Courtney
Growing up in Michigan, I never really understood vest either, mainly because most of the time it's way too cold there to not wear a full jacket...but when we moved to Colorado, I totally got the appeal because a lot of times it would be crisp and cool, but sunny and in the high 40's/low 50's aka perfect vest weather!
ReplyDeleteI have a down vest that was first owned by my grandfather who wore it when he worked on his farm. It is so dingy-looking, but so comfy and warm. I just can't let it go!
ReplyDeleteI am totally inVESTing in one, ha. You guys look great. xo.
ReplyDeleteI love vests for fall/spring. Just an extra layer without being too warm. Sticking your leg out or leaving the window open while you sleep is the PERFECT example!
ReplyDeleteAdorable!
I love a good vest! I have a couple and find that they are the perfect addition to an around-the-town outfit or to wear to a football game in the fall when the weather is getting cooler.
ReplyDeleteFunny, I always wondered the same thing about vests: what's the point? But maybe I'm missing out. The one y'all have looks pretty darn cute and cozy.
ReplyDeleteYour family is so cute! I love vests, but the husband thinks I look ridiculous. I love them because I secretly think that they hide my tummy.
ReplyDeleteYou guys look adorable! I certainly think it's a do. I haven't worn one since I was a teenager and I only wore it then as I thought it made my boobs look bigger! Perhaps now it's time to get one again (for better reasons!) :)
ReplyDeletex
Vests are SO great for running errands. You're warm enough going from shop to shop, but not overheated in the shop and you don't have to carry your jacket around!!
ReplyDeleteGrocery store, Ikea, etc. Perfect vest days.
you look great! so tomboy chic - i love it.
ReplyDeleteout west, you can never have too many vests. i love finding vintage ones!
ReplyDeletexo the egg out west.
This post amuses me, because, I guess, vests have just always been part of my life! If you grow up in Maine 15 minutes from L.L.Bean and go to a outdoorsy/preppy liberal arts college, you wear vests. You wear fleece vests, and down vests. L.L. Bean has a cute one hidden in the hunting section of their website (and apparently shown in Marie Claire magazine.)

Vests are very functional layering pieces, of course, but they can also look very hip with boots, as you show. In New England, they are a good "transitional season" piece of clothing.
I've always been mystified by vests! I always thought they looked relaxed yet chic. I'm encouraged to get one for spring and fall now!
ReplyDeleteUm... I don't know. I love vests, but everytime I've tried one I felt weird... Even more if it's a fur vest! I feel like a little monkey with hair problems.
ReplyDeleteDO. All the way!
ReplyDeleteI used to think I couldn't pull of off the look. But I bought one for our honeymoon because we were going to be driving a lot and in and out of mountain ranges. It was perfect. Sort of sporty casual. I love mine. Again, especially for driving.
ReplyDeleteI love vests. In LA nobody seems o understand the vest - which is strange because layering is so useful here where it's warm during the day and cool at night. My husband and I sometimes wear our poofy vests together. It's so lame, but it reminds us of when we lived in Brooklyn :)
ReplyDeleteMy 6 year old son finally talked me into buying one for him this past fall. He was cute enough to convince me!
ReplyDeleteyou and alex are adorable in your matching vests. i saw you two walking last night - my beloved and i were eating outside at bar pitti (in march! outside!). you two have similar glasses and overall style - very complimentary! love it!
ReplyDeleteVests totally confuse me, too! I mean, what about your arms?! You, however, look adorable. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm obsessed with my down vest. wear it all the time (perfect for San Francisco weather). In fact, just last week my son saw a woman on the street who looked nothing like me except that she was wearing a dark vest and said, "hey mom, she looks like you!". That's when I knew things had gotten out of control. I wear my J.Crew one with skirts, leggings and jeans alike! Also, fur vests? I'm kind of loving those now too
ReplyDeleteI live in Colorado (which is very causal place to live, mostly), and I live in a puffy vest from fall until spring. I find it's usually the just-right layer I need. Plus, I hate wearing big bulky coats in the car, and since I don't live in a very walkable city, I spend plenty of time driving from place to place. The vest is good for that. On a funny note though, when I travel, I rarely bring a vest, as I feel it's too casual for many places outside of the mountains. When I travel, the dressy coats get to come instead. :)
ReplyDeleteIn the UK we call them Gillets (gee -lays), you look very cute in your vest.
ReplyDeletetotally a do!
ReplyDeleteHehe, I've never worn a vest cause I thought my arms would feel cold but as you describe it looks like it works really well. And I thing it will suit the warm weather of Greece pretty well! Always inspiring Joanne =) xoxo
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely a do! I wear my mountain hardware one all the time, and I have a gap one with a little faux fur on the hood that I love too.
ReplyDeleteLove vests...except mine are faux fur! Wear them over sweater, tshirts or a denim jacket. Super "Chique'. Check out my blog for other tips.

Love this. My husband just bought this terrific Patagonia vest for a ski trip....but he now sports it all the time. And although I was reluctant at first, I fell in love. With his. And I'm on the way to purchase my own too.
ReplyDeletethought i missed the boat on wearing mine! Now I see it's totally ok! Looks good!
ReplyDeleteDO!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteIf you live in Colorado you need a vest, the weather changes so fast! A puffy one is a staple in my closet :)
ReplyDeleteoh goodness, i'm a huge fan and cracked up when i saw that you posted about it! my friends all make fun of me, but i can't get enough of them. i have three and saw an older lass in a yellow one yesterday in central park...definitely on my radar for next fall :D
ReplyDeleteIck. Sorry!
ReplyDeleteThat is TOTALLY how I sleep! I hate being constricted, and hate being a *little* too hot. Makes sense, because I love my vest! Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteOh, where did you get your boots?! (and I notice you posted an instagram photo - do you share your username?)
ReplyDeletePuffy vests are the best !!
ReplyDeleteWe love vests in our family for all four of us. Patagonia makes really cute vests for kids. My husband loves Ibex wool vests, great for weekends.
ReplyDeleteI was 'invested' after I moved to the US about two years ago ! My husband talked me into buying a down vest, so I got a green one with toggles (French touch !!) from J.Crew and I LOVE it, I'll wear it to the store, on a walk and whenever I fly back. I've actually got a lot of compliments from my fashionista friends, so it's most definitely a
ReplyDeleteDO !
I have two by Patagonia, one by Athleta. They look great, but many times I do end up feeling cold.
ReplyDeleteI'm sometimes embarrassed by how often I sport a vest. I literally almost live in them! BUT THEY ARE SOO GREAT. I love that they keep you warm without the bulk. I hate walking around in big, bulky coats in the winter. A vest is such a perfect solution!
ReplyDeleteI only use them for my little boy, so perfect for the 'in-between' days.
ReplyDeleteI haven't found one that would work for me yet.
I'm all about my puffy vest.
ReplyDeleteI finally convinced my hubby of their comfort... and he loves his now!
They're great to just toss on over your sweater/hoodie... i think they look adorable. PLUS they keep you warm enough but not too hot. My favorite accessory for running errands or hiking with the doggies!
Definatly a do!
Thanks so much, you look so cute in your vest!

I agree with you on the vest front! I too sleep with one leg out- it's my temperature barometer... if that's even accurate...?
ReplyDeleteI love vests. I have one puffy one and two fleece ones from "pata-gucci" good thing is they last FOREVER. I've had one for over 12 years. I was sad when I was pregnant that I couldn't wear it... lol
great post! cute books and Toby is quite the adorable sidekick!

Ha!I love this post as I wear my vest daily. My fave is the down sweater vest from Patagonia. It's ultralight, windproof and toasty warm. It's perfect in all weather!
ReplyDeleteIt's a total DO!! I love boys in vests especially! And by boys I really mean men. haha :)
ReplyDeleteLove the green one you're sporting in these photos!
http://iloveublank.blogspot.com/
I love my vest (except I call it a gillet, or body warmer!) I love wearing it over a shirt or long sleeve tee...I think Toby needs one! xxx
ReplyDeleteMy husband got his first puffer vest this year and he about died of happiness. I remember this quote: "It's like my chest is warm and fuzzy, but my arms are wild and free!" (True words said by a grown man in a gleeful child voice.)
ReplyDeleteIn Europe I actually saw quite a few women wearing boy-ish puffy coats with feminine frilly skirts! It looked so chic, and it's a great way to show off your outfit while keeping cozy. My favorite ensemble was a thin black turtleneck, light blue vest, and charcoal pleated skirt with some sweet red slip-on shoes. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteTotal do!!!! I wear my puffer vest with basically everything...even when I'm semi-dressed up! It's just the best layering piece ever.
ReplyDeleteI am ALL about the vests. I have so many that my husband makes fun of me. And I'm also all about sticking one foot or entire leg out from under the covers. :)
ReplyDeleteThe vest "we" have! So cute that you guys share it.
ReplyDeleteyou guys are so cute :)
ReplyDeleteI love that you you share a vest! I'm a big fan of puffy vests, they're perfect to wear to a bonfire on a cool night.
ReplyDeleteI always look forward to vest weather (October-early November, March-April)! My husband thinks they're ridiculous, but I can't stop wearing mine (Patagonia down).
ReplyDeleteThey are SO English, but over here they are called body warmers! It's a total do, except I haven't found one to fit my curvy body and still look flattering! I am on the hunt though!
ReplyDeletei say do. i have a pumpkin colored vest that i love and always get compliments. i bought it from j.crew ages ago, but it still looks great. i love layering it under lighter-weight jackets for warmth and a pop of color.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a Do! Y'all look so cute and look at little Toby (you need to get him one too:)!
ReplyDeleteI go in and out of vest phases but I'm currently in! Been wearing my J.Crew down vest for the last few weeks and just ordered the Ride On vest from Lululemon Athletica!
ReplyDeleteP.S I LOVE your LR boots! Did you find for a good price?? They are soo $$.
I used to get confused about vests too till I moved to Paris. Now I get it and find them really comfy!
ReplyDeleteJo - love your boots - where are from?
ReplyDeleteI love my vest and am wearing it right now!
ReplyDeleteJoanna,
ReplyDeleteHow are your Loeffler Randall boots? I want to invest in a pair but want to hear about the quality first. Do you think they are a pair you will have for a long time?
I LOVE my vests!!!! they are perfect for layering with bright colored hoodies and they are not super bulky when driving in the car.
ReplyDeleteI have two vests and I'm obsessed with them- to the point where my husband likes to poke fun at me about it! Vests are perfect for walks in mild winter weather, but they are also perfect for shopping in the winter! You're not freezing when you go outside, but you don't sweat in the store. It's the best!
ReplyDeleteLovely photos. The vest looks amazing on you and your kid is so cute!
ReplyDeletewww.absurdlypeculiar.blogspot.com
it's all about CORE body warmth. keeping warm without the bulk. great for kids too so their little arms have more freedom:)
ReplyDeleteyes to the vest they are the best, ha!
ReplyDeletei use to have purple one that was a hand me down (3x) and i loved it! they don't work with my lifestyle now but i'm ok with that ;)
In England they are called gilets. It's a very country thing to wear them, I love wearing mine (from Jack Wills, the preppy classic English version of say Abercrombie or something) with jeans, a jumper, scarf and co-ordinating Hunter wellies! Yours looks perfect!
ReplyDeleteI love my puffy vest! It's mint-colored and has faux fur trim on the hood... It looks great with just about everything.
ReplyDeletePs. Alex's smile in this photo is totally contagious :D
Vests are the best:) I throw mine on to go out & feed the chickens, on runs when it's chilly but not too cold, and they're cozy. Horny Toad makes a slim puffy that is delightfully light.
ReplyDeleteI rock a vest every chance I get! Love love love mine. Find myself picking out other items to match my vest. And with pockets that big who needs a purse??
ReplyDeleteSO funny! I never understood vests until my husband got one & I found myself wearing it too. I got my own for Christmas & I looooove it!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE my vests! I have a few and never tire of them. They are perfect for a jaunt outside to soak in all the glory of outdoors but with added warmth. Like driving with the windows down and the heater on (which I love). I spy a Ocean Avenue walk! ;)
ReplyDeletei do! i have a black puffy one...i've actually had it sense highschool!
ReplyDeleteI never thought of vests that way before, but it makes perfect sense. I'm eager to try wearing one myself now. (I am, after all, a stick-my-leg-out-of-the-covers kind of girl.)
ReplyDeleteI don't recall where I heard this but some comedian once said: "Vests. The solution for that hot-arms, yet cold-chest problem." It really got me thinking of a vests usefulness. Growing up in the psuedo-country in Canada, a lot of people wore vests. I was just never a vest person. I never felt warmer in it, and because I'm petite they always just swallowed me up! Looked like a life jacket every single time!
ReplyDeleteWe're big on vests down here in Melbourne (Oz), our weather is so variable. My husband wears them over his work shirts when jackets are too warm/restrictive but shirts alone are too cold. I love the puffer kind like you have on as windbreakers when it's blustery but not too cold.
ReplyDeleteAw, I love how Toby's belly peeps out from under his little jacket. Soooo cute!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way as you did... until I got one too! Then I understood. Here is one that I wear ALL the time (snagged it off the sale rack from Gap):
ReplyDeletehttp://lovelyandluxe.blogspot.com/2012/01/lazy-weekend.html
Know what I do for colder days? I layer my vest over a denim jacket! A very dark and fitted jacket with the sleeves pushed up. Usually I keep them both unbuttoned with a cute striped shirt underneath.
ReplyDeleteTrust me, it's cute!!!
they are perfect for driving as no silly sleeves restrict you from moving your arms!
ReplyDeleteDon't!!!
ReplyDeleteHate vests. They'e so "puffy" and i do get cold on my arms... :D
I like vests...I wore them a lot when I lived on the East Coast because it got cold, but now that I live on the West Coast, I haven't worn a vest in years!
ReplyDeleteYou have the cuttest kid ever. Ever! And he's such a new yorker!
ReplyDeleteI think you should post more about him :)
Love vests! I'm in Montreal, so vests are perfect for mild winter days when you're sick of your heavy winter coat! A vest, chunky scarf, knee boots and a cute hat equals perfection to me for the week-end errands.
ReplyDeleteCute Vests!

ReplyDeletehaha! my friend and i were just talking about this. she does not understand vests and i loooove them! we grew up in upstate ny and vests are perfect for those crisp days!
ReplyDeleteGood Lord, you all are adorable. :)
ReplyDeleteI wore vests a lot when I went to Bend,in Oregon. And it's a very good thing for when you need to be warmer, you can put it under a coat without tight sleeves! :)
ReplyDeleteOh wow those are very beautiful .Your excitement is clearly justified! I want to tell youtrue religion shorts is my favorite and hope you can come in and see.
ReplyDeleteExactly, it's the have the covers but stick one leg out thing!
ReplyDeleteLove your picture, you look so good.
ReplyDeleteI have never get the idea to wear west but I do love to sleep with the window open so the room feels cooler and fresh.
ps my kids always slept outside when I lived in Iceland. When I moved to Vermont I was not sure if I would do it because of all the animals who live here in the woods haha. So sometimes my babygirl slept outside and I sat outside and read a book. Could not leave her alone.
Hava wonderful weekend.
I have to admit, when I first move to Portland from Las Vegas I did NOT get the whole puffy vest thing. It only took me one Fall/Winter here to get it! Now, 6 years later, I live in my black puffy vest. Not only is it cozy, but it's actually pretty slimming too!
ReplyDeleteVests are a definite do!!
ReplyDeleteI have never bought a vest, but it looks so cute on you I might try it!
ReplyDeleteLove the vest, but love the boots more. Did you seriously pay like $700 on them? Jeepers!
ReplyDeleteWe got a lovely vest for our 1,5 year old daughter just to put on when she goes to the garden.
ReplyDeleteGot it at mark and spencers.
http://www.marksandspencer.com/Funnel-Ditsy-Floral-Print-Gilet/dp/B002C1VIQA?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_11&nodeId=44217030&sr=1-11&qid=1331416901&pf_rd_r=1DAQX2N7Q9BRDMJ1FGHY&pf_rd_m=A2BO0OYVBKIQJM&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=44217030&pf_rd_p=215570647&pf_rd_s=related-items-3
I have also wondered the same thing about vests. And your description explained it perfectly. I never have worn one myself but now i just might try one.
ReplyDeleteVintagehoneybee.blogspot.com
love. love. love a good vest. sometimes fashion doesn't always make sense... you just have to go based on looks. and a vest is perennially chic. very polo-esque.
ReplyDeleteThey are still in vogue in Australia, you'll be seeing more of them as winter comes in.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE my vest! I wear it almost everyday on early morning dog walks. I recently realized what I loved most about my vest: POCKETS! When you need a little place for your phone and keys or credit card - poof! There it is!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the new wardrobe addition! xo
no way! i just happened to put on my vest for the first time (got it from a equestrian supply store months ago!) it's an awkward temperature here in australia...
ReplyDeletewhen i lived in maine i wore vests ... that was the "in thing"!
ReplyDeleteVests are fabulous - I'm all for them!
ReplyDeleteYou should definitely get a vest for toby! We recived one as a gift for my daughter and it's been great. Perfect with a hoodie in fall and spring, plus so cute!
ReplyDeleteI love love love your boots. but why would you spend almost $900 on them (I checked on their website)?
ReplyDeleteI have an hunter green/plaid reversible Ralph Lauren puffy vest that I got for $15 that I love.
ReplyDeleteI outfit you have on is perfect for a chilly day.
I bought three in different colors from LLBean several years ago and can not possibly imagine my life without them. Try living without paper towels. See? Same thing.
ReplyDeleteOk here is an important question on the dressy variety of vests. Why do they all have a silk back?? My fiance wants to wear a vest for our wedding (he uses the word waistcoat), but we both agree that the silk back is just silly. If you have a coat over your vest, then fine, make the back silk. But if you want to wear a vest without a coat, then the entire vest should be of the same material, should it not?
ReplyDeleteAny thoughts, suggestions, or words of wisdom?
