Socks in bed.

New York has been so chilly recently that I've been wearing hiking socks to bed. Hiking socks. It's super sexy, as you can imagine. This comic made me laugh out loud. Why are girls cold and guys hot as furnaces when they sleep? It's one of life's great mysteries.

  6. I've been experiencing the same cold here in Michigan and go to bed with thick socks and wake up without them... What would we do without socks?!

My partner often comes to bed after me, so he's not always available as a foot warmer. My favourite part about sleeping with sock on is the mystery of how they work themselves off in the night. The other week I had the same phenomenon occur with leggings I had worn to bed because it was so cold!

  9. LOVE this! I look like that picture every night. My husband laughs at my hiking sock in bed get up but it's so necessary - and my toes are still cold! Thanks for brightening my morning with this!

  10. It's the opposite for me! I always leave the window open when I go to sleep, but in the morning it is always shut. Somehow I think my husband has something to do with it.

  11. Ha! Wait 'til you get to be our age...it will be the other way around! He's freezing and I change my t-shirt once or twice a night! Ha Ha

  12. i have to do that too! however a friend of mine insists that is it bad luck and leads to nightmares, according to his grandmother. i don't mean to argue with her, but...socks are so often necessary!

  13. That comic cracks me up! It's been chilly in Chicago and I've been tucking my tank top into my pajama pants lately. And of course my husband is giving me all sorts of grief for it :)

  14. This is exactly ME! I always joke that I go to bed looking like a homeless person: all my various (and warmest) layers including SOCKS! It ain't pretty but I sleep like a baby:)

    Love your blog, Jo!

I wear socks and sometimes a sweatshirt - likewise, very sexy!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm always freezing cold when I go to bed, so I layer up, and then I wake up in the middle of the night sweating. Very attractive.

Another fun way to think of it is, the more layers you go to bed with, the more fun you and your significant other can have taking them all off ;)

  20. Woolrich double layer aloe vera socks are the way forward, Joanna!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I always have to make sure my feet are covered by a blanket, no matter what. (It's a remnant habit from childhood, when I guess I imagined monsters nibbling my toes.) If guys are furnaces, though, all the better for cuddling up to them. :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I usually hate sleeping in socks, makes my feet too warm, but the combo cold weather and cold flat, I had no choice so I've slept in wool socks a few nights, and its pretty nice.

My bf is always super hot and I put on several layers before going to bed, haha!
hopefully spring will be here soon :)

  23. I can´t sleep with socks! in fact, I sleep with one foot outside bed :)

But the winter here (Argentina) is lighter than yours.

    Love!

  26. Same here! My super sexy Smartwool socks have been getting me through. My husband can't laugh though, because that is all he wears to bed. Sorry if that's TMI - I just think its hilarious! socks with a full nighttime ensemble is way less ridiculous than an ensemble consisting solely of socks, in my opinion. Whatever it takes to stay warm!

  27. Girls cold and guys warm? Not in my house. I'm usually baking and my husband is cold. I wear pajamas and he wears nothing. There would seem to be any easy fix to this problem but I'm not sure what it is...

  28. You are so cute :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh No! I just realised that because my husband has gone ice fishing for four days that means I am also without my hot water bottle for four days.

    ReplyDelete
  30. This is the story of my life! Seriously.
I used to go to bed without socks every night, my toes as cold as ice cubes, and I would warm them up against my husband... Poor thing let this go on for a bit, but he has since convinced me that socks are a better way to go. :)

  35. Reminds me of something my guy friend tweeted the other day, "Girls are always: a) Cold b) Tired c) Mad at me."

Also, last night I went to bed in a Lands End flannel nightgown and a pair of yoga pants. And I live in Los Angeles!

    ReplyDelete
  36. We're the opposite! My boyfriend can't sleep unless he has on long sleeves, long pants, and socks. I wear shorts and a tank. He always says I'm a furnace!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I have to wear socks! And I have to have my pj pants tucked into them or I can't sleep. I always joke about how sexy I look :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Mark and I were just laughing at my night wear the other night. It was so bad it made me cringe! He is one of those furnace men - thankfully!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Haha! Story of my life. I end up grabbing my daughter out of her crib to cuddle when it gets too cold.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I know! I call my boyfriend my 'heater-hotter' cause he keeps me warm.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Socks in bed almost every night! MN winters.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I turn into a furnace about 10 minutes after I get to bed, but I still wear sleep pants, shirt and sometimes socks even in the summer. My bf is freezing and refuses to wear more than a sleep shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Exactly, why are women always cold and guys not?! I work in IT company (so you can imagine there are not many women there besides me) and I am always the one fighting with the guys to turn up the heating while the gentlemen there walk around with T-shirts! Plus of course coming from north europe where -30 is not very rare thing in winter, I get the additional "but your from north, you should be used to this" speech now that I live in Prague..nope, I will never get used to this:)

    ReplyDelete
  44. kate, that's such a funny superstition. i'm still wearing socks:)

    ReplyDelete
  45. That's hilarious. I am increasingly unsexy every night before bed.... smartwool socks, Roots sweats, night shirt tucked in, earplugs, mouthguard.

It's a wonder he still comes over...

    ReplyDelete
  46. my feet are freezing and I think it's one of my husband's pet peeves that I need to snuggle up to his inferno-like legs. I mean, I'm pretty sure he loves the cuddling but the ice box feet? not so much.

  47. i'm from Spain and summershere are pretty hot, it doesn't matter my feet are always cold! so just imaginw how they're in the middle of February!

  50. i am always freezing at bedtime! my husband makes so much fun of me. i usually fall asleep with my feet in between his calves :) for valentines day he got me a pink and white onesie from here: http://onepiece.com/us/shop
haha it's only been two nights but it's incredible!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I cannot sleep without socks, regardless of the weather. And if they fall off while I'm asleep, I will wake up to find them at the bottom of the bed or the floor and put them back on! My husband thinks I'm a total freak! On another note-- we also have separate blankets. I'm freezing so I have a duvet and he sleeps with a sheet. No sheet hogging and no complaints of being too hot or too cold--life saver!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I believe I am the man in my relationship then! I am the little heater in the bed :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. I am ALWAYS cold... One thing I cannot do, however, is wear socks in bed! It makes me super claustrophobic! (weird, I know).

    ReplyDelete
  54. I never wear socks in bed, only on the coldest of winter nights, and I hate not feeling my feet against the sheets. But my husband does, and he styles his sleeping ensemble just the gal in the drawing! It cracks me up every time, to me he looks like a goofy superhero.

  55. socks are sexier than ice feet in my opinion!

    ReplyDelete
  56. ah I'm ALWAYS cold, and I'd never experienced real, bone-chilling cold until this winter in Amsterdam! It was a historic winter in Europe - all the canals froze over! Not trying to promote my blog or anything cheesy, but I did post some photos the last few days of the snow and ice in Amsterdam and I have to say it is an amazing sight! Feel free to check them out, or not :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm the exact opposite. I'm always super hot. We sleep w/the temperature cranked down and two fans on going as high as they can. My husband is always frozen, but I can't help it! Nothing worse than sweating while you are trying to sleep!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Love the picture. I always wear socks to bed. Even here in the south in the summer time.

  61. I'm one hot sleeper actually (and a lady!) Sometimes I go to sleep wearing socks and I think I'll be comfortable but when I wake up I find I've taken them off in my sleep! How strange!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Yep- I've been sleeping in socks too!
(And it's not even that cold here, I just like being extra snug!)
Luckily my wife is dressed equally attractively for bed! :)

  64. It's the total opposite with my boyfriend and me. I emit so much heat at night!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Yeah, it is true that if wearing full on warm suits to bed was sexy, I'd be a Victoria's secret model. I like to be warm and toasty and I have no shame about it.

Along with a few other commentators above, I am a young lady, and I BOIL at night. I keep the windows cracked open in the winter, and sleep naked. (I close the window if it gets below 30, but anything over that, and it's open.) My boyfriend is amused when he brings me a cup of tea in the morning sometimes (yes, he's a sweetie), and he can hold his hand over my arm and feel the heat coming off me from several inches away.

    ReplyDelete
  67. haHA! It's sooo true. I am also a bedtime sock-wearer. I get some serious flack for it from my husby, but that's a small price to pay for cozy warm feet at night!

  68. I only wear socks on extremely freezing nights, but this post made me laugh, remembering one freezing night during a blackout when I lived in the West Village...I slept in hiking socks AND snow pants. Hot Stuff! :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. Seriously! I wouldn't even be surprised if my husband caught on fire in the middle of the night.

I dress exactly like this when I go to bed. There's nothing worse than when your pj pant legs or top ride up!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yesssss, last night I felt like I was dressed to go camping: sleep pants, comfy tee, sweat shirt, giant socks. I think I'm about ready for spring, I do love bundling up though!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Ha! It's just the opposite in our house! ^_^ And STILL...no socks will be worn to bed around here!! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  73. ha! though i must admit, i would burn right up if i tried wearing socks to sleep. james calls me the radiator.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Cute!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I'm not sure if this is true, but I think it has something to do with the fact that a woman's body is designed to function as if she were pregnant, thus, heat tends to be "contained" in the womb area to keep a baby that might be in there nice and warm :)

When I went hiking in Norway I had to buy a sleeping bag and found it interesting to learn than the same sleeping bag is suitable for a man at lower temps than for a woman.

More evidence supporting this theory: my feet have been freezing this winter in Berlin!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Ha ha! I wear hiking socks to bed all the time in the winter, but I try and still wear a cute negligee or something so it doesn't look terribly un-sexy. ;) My husband thinks its funny. At least in the summer I usually wear...ahem...nothing. It is way to hot in my room.

P.S. My husband gave me the most beautiful necklace for Valentine's day. He knows I read this blog everyday and so he looked at your advertisers thinking he would find something I liked that way. He was right, it is perfect. How cute was that ! :)

    ReplyDelete
  77. I haaave to wear pjamas! He has to wear just boxers. So strange!

    ReplyDelete
  78. To answer your question... so that they sleep together!!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. haha what a cute comic

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think socks in bed are cute! As long as you take them off for, you know, sexy times...

I always think of Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail--she wears socks with her PJs and it's ADORABLE!

    Rock those socks, Joanna!

    ReplyDelete
  81. When I was younger, my Dad told me not to sleep in my socks or else I would have a bad dream. It's probably one of our weird Irish superstitions...but I literally have a bad dream if I sleep with socks on. Happened two nights ago. I'm 25. I can still remember dreams from kindergarten when I slept with socks on and had a nightmare. So weird, right?

    Thanks a lot, Da.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I'm always cold too and my husband is like a furnace but for some reason I love winter and when the room is cold. I'm also weird, I can't wait pj bottoms (boxers usually) and no socks, they drive me crazy. Just lots of quilts and a goose down comforter on my side of the bed!!

    ReplyDelete
  83. My husband is always hot too! He sleeps with a fan on and halfway through the night he's usually put all the covers on me. :)

    ReplyDelete
  84. I got a Valentine's card this year that read: "I love you from the top of your head to the ice cubes you call feet" inside: "seriously. socks in bed. Happy Valentine's Day!"

    ReplyDelete
  85. Oh my, I've been wearing my ski socks to bed, too....pulled up OVER my sweats, to keep them in place. It's been so cold - I just want Spring!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Totally used to be exactly like the girl in the comic! But when I'm pregnant or nursing, I am hot all. the. time. A lot of times I wake up with all the covers thrown off, and my husband's curled up with blankets and pillows piled on top of him. We're an odd bunch.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Well - just to spice things up, let me tell you that once you hit 50, the roles tend to reverse.....I am now the one flinging off all the covers, and he is shivering and asking for the flannel sheets to be on the bed year round.....

    ReplyDelete
  88. haha! made me laugh.. and yes, WHY is that?? so funny.. xo

    ReplyDelete
  89. Haha, girls are cold and guys are hot when sleeping....so they can cuddle and feel "just right!" :)

    ReplyDelete
  90. this has soooo been me the last few nights... our landlords have suddenly turned down the heat because it's almost "spring"! my hubby is always burning up and i'm always freezing!

    ReplyDelete
  91. in my case it is the other way around. I'm kind of a radiant heater at night, whilst boyfriend is sleeping with 3 blankets... To be fair, we sleep with open windows and its been -13°C at night... so I might have a supernatural power!

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  92. I have no idea but it's always the same with me and my girlfriend. She'll wearing virtually all her clothes and I still won't put on any pajamas. It's become a personal battle for her - she refuses to believe I don't get cold shoulders in the night.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I'd never experience wearing socks to bed since I am living in a warm country.:)

But it seems like an interesting thing to do.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I'm totally hot all the time. Its winter in Philadelphia and my husband and I sleep with the ceiling fan on low and the air purifier cranked up. Its like waking up on a mountain side.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I'm from Montreal (Canada) so the winter is always longer than I'd like, but you have to try to go easy on the complaining to get through it...

I'm always cold when I get to bed, but things slowly heat up in my duvet. Also, I got heating breasts...I've actually had ex boyfriends complaining about it in the past but my current (and amazing) boyfriend just enjoys it a lot and asks to be the little spoon a little more often when it's frisky... In exchange I get to stick my frozen feet on him until they warm up.

    ReplyDelete
  96. get an italian greyhound! they're the hot water bottle dog. tiny furnaces that curl right up under the blankets on your feet. i haven't even need flannel sheets this winter!

    ReplyDelete
  97. LOL!! That's actually a problem my boyfriend and I are dealing w/ right now...he's always hot and I'm cold so he loves to sleep w/ the window open in the dead of winter even making me colder.......I don't get it!!

    ReplyDelete
  98. That is totally me. Down to the fact that the pants are TUCKED INTO the socks. It's a really sexy look.

    I'm loving this Tumblr!

    ReplyDelete
  100. Yes, Joanna! It's TRUE. My husband is hot and I am cold when we go to sleep. And that is even in Summer, Autumn, Winter or Spring.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Okay, don't tell anyone but I would like to wear socks during 'special moments' with my husband. He always says no...but on Valentine's day this year, he said yes!!!

    I love him.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Sleeping with socks on is D.E.F.I.N.I.T.E.L.Y necessary for me!

    ReplyDelete
  103. I bet Alex laughed at you :) I have a pair of lovely long fair isle design socks for night time. I love slouching in them

    ReplyDelete
  104. Baaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahaaaaaaa---I laughed at this picture so hard I started coughing. In the least ghetto way I can say it, I feel you with the hiking socks... Every time I get out of bed in my anti-cold nightwear ensemble and see myself in the mirror I can only shake my head. I'm so glad you posted this.

    ReplyDelete
  105. This is me too! That is so true, why are men warmer than women? Once my fiance leaves the bed for work, I get even colder. Argh.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I wear socks and flannel pajamas, sometimes the Mr.'s pajamas. Then flimsier stuff in the summer but comfort is first!

    ReplyDelete
  107. Socks on bed quite whaaak but I have done it so many times. :)

    ReplyDelete
  108. No way... socks in bed are so suffocating! I run warm though- I take after my mama, whom my dad calls "the furnace".

I also think, though, that you're warmer if you wear LESS under a down comforter. Just like when you're camping in a down sleeping bag, you should be naked or near-naked. It's something about warm air circulation and temperature regulation. Try it next time you camp, I swear by it! Wearing more clothes in a sleeping bag does not make you warmer.
