Roald Dahl stamps

British author Roald Dahl wrote the nuttiest, wackiest, most magical children's stories, and The Royal Mail just released this rad set of stamps to celebrate him. What's your favorite Roald Dahl book? (Mine's The BFG.)

I just LOVED Matilda as a little girl, I think because I identified with her bookishness. Read it too many times to count. I might have to revisit it. :)

Ahh.. I wish we had those stamps in the states! I was 100% obsessed with Roald Dahl growing up, and read Matilda literally 13 times (I had a tally sheet in my desk at home). But I love all of his books - such a creative soul with an amazing gift of writing.

I loved reading Matilda as an adolescent. It was pretty magical. I remember seeing the move The Witches when I was younger. I think Angelica Houston was in it and it scared the bajeezus out of me lol!

I love those. The BFG was my favorite followed by a close second of everything else. I read his autobiography, Boy, when I was in 6th grade for a book report. It was wonderful.

James and the Giant Peach, all the way. I remember my teacher reading it out loud to us in second grade, chapter by chapter. It was 100% magical and I can't wait to do the same thing for my girls.

I would have to say Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It is a classic, and I remember it first being read to us as kids when we put on the musical at my junior school - I was 6 years old and played a sweet.

I also love the Revolting Rhymes - so great!

Just thought I'd share this lovely quote from Dahl's "The Minpins": "And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you, because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it."

S. Fox said...

All of them! He's my favorite children's author! Matilda holds a special place in my heart, and now that my last name is Fox, so does Fantastic Mr. Fox (I gave this book to my husband for the first Christmas we spent together while we were still dating...I couldn't believe he had never read it!). Did you ever read George's Marvelous Medicine? A little lesser known among Dahl's books, but every bit as delightful!

Thanks for sharing these great stamps Joanna. =)

These are wonderful! I love all of his books but I think I must say BFG, because my fourth grade teacher read it aloud to us and it was magical. BFG is followed closely by Matilda.

RuBee said...

These are very cute! My favourite is Matilda and everytime I got told off by my mum or dad I used to imagine I was her and plot my revenge! I teach very young children now but when I taught 7-9 year olds I used Georges Marvellous Medicine and the Twits in many English lessons. The children loved them. X

I love these! I loved The BFG, Matilda, and The Witches when I was younger. Still have my copies somewhere I think. Might be time to dig them out and have a re-read! :)

((Sheepishly)) I didn't read any Roald Dahl until the Summer before I went to college. Or, well, at least they didn't impact me. I remember "James & the Giant Peach" and the "Witches," but when I went to say goodbye to my friend before she left for college, she was packing and amongst her books was "Danny, Champion of the World." She told me I had to read it, it was just too good not too. So I went home and read it in one night. A week later I went to college. I still think about that book a decade later.

Those are incredible!! In elementary school, my best friend and I made a goal to read every book Roald Dahl ever wrote. I think we both made it within about 2 or 3 (I should track down the last couple and read them!). My favorites were Danny, the Champion of the World and the Witches. I can't wait until my daughter is old enough for me to read them out loud to her.

Chloe - 24 hours of sunshine said...

Can't choose between the BFG, Mathilda and the Witches !!! My favourite writer ever ♥ I want those stamps !!!

Janey said...

I agree with Julia, it would be nice to see Quentin Blake celebrated as a part of these stamps, they are his illustrations, and I should think that for most people, certainly in the UK, when you think of a Roald Dahl character you invariably think of the Quentin Blake version of that character! Such a hugely talented illustrator, and I don't think you'd ever see a drawing or painting of his without knowing exactly who was responsible for it.

Helen said...

I love all Roald Dahl's books but my particular favourite is Charlie and the chocolate factory. I can't wait for my little one to be big enough for it to be his story too. The kids at school also loved having any part of his stories for reading or basing a literacy lesson on.
I'm hoarding the 68p & 76p versions of these stamps to use on my postcrossing postcards. It's really hard to get nice stamps in these values for internetional post once our local post office runs out!!

Anonymous said...

Tough to choose among The BFG, Danny and The Witches. Both Danny and the Witches were made into excellent films.
It has to be The Witches since, to this day, I wonder abtsractly whether certain mean people - teachers or shop attendants - will suddenly turn and remove their faces to reveal...
...what I expected all along.

laurenjeanallece said...

Oooh, I want these! My favorite Roald Dahl book is actually his two volume autobiography (Boy/Going Solo)... And Fantastic Mr. Fox, of course :)

Jill Hardt said...

I loved BFG too!!!!
But isn't it so sad that he was a bigot and anti-semite? How can a person who writes such nice books for children be so hateful?

Matilda is my favorite. Followed closely by The Twits. These books are amazing, even for adults to read. I re-read a few since I've grown up and there were loads of important life lessons in there that I didn't even realise I was being taught as a child. The illustrator, Quentin Blake, has also written some of his own children's books and they are awesome too!

Roald Dahl was my absolute favorite author growing up! I think he greatly contributed to my slightly twisted sense of humor. Every one of his books struck a chord with me, it's impossible to choose a favorite, but if I were FORCED, I'd have to go with Matilda just because I identified with her bookworm-ish-ness. This made my heart so happy tonight :)

Not that I want to judge Pamela Druckerson for her personal adult choices-- but I’m struck by how effortless it seems to write a parenting book. I’m still a mother-to-be but I’m certainly cautious of taking advice from the woman whose other contribution to the literary world is “Lust in Translation: Infidelity from Tokyo to Tennessee” and the woman who famously cataloged her quest to give her husband the perfect birthday present in her article, “how I planned a ménage à trios.”
