A funny bedroom tip for Valentine's Day...

A while back, I had dinner with friends, including an acupuncturist. We started talking about dating, and she revealed something surprising...

After a long day, people often give massage to their partners, but massages can actually make you feel stressed. Tension builds up around our spines, so if you're stressed, you don't want to focus on that area, she explained. If you had a rough day, a massage is one of the worst things you can do! You want to focus on areas far from the spine, like hands and feet.

So, what's the #1 way to chill someone out? "Tummy rubs!" she said, explaining that tummy rubs move stress away from the spine and make you feel super relaxed. Fascinating, right? Who would have thought? And so easy... Maybe a little post-dinner treat for Valentine's Day:)
P.S. A funny sex tip. And do you kiss your baby on the mouth?

  1. So interesting! And yes, I do need a way to relax at the end of the day. Love being a stay at home mom with Baby Lulu but definitely have THOSE DAYS when I just want to pull my hair out ;-)

  3. I have been doing this unknowingly for years. I think it helps digestion too. But I still love a massage....

  4. Huh! Weird and surprising to me actually. I'm guessing they don't mean tummy rub as in massage, more just like gentle caresses? Cause a massage in the stomach doesn't sound all that great to me. Unless you're a puppy or a raccoon ;) (Love the photos by the way!)

  6. I've never heard that before. I think back massages and foot massages are super relaxing though.

  7. Interesting!
We prefer to hug for a while without talking and meditate. After that it's like we can't shut up and we're back to ourselves.

PS: The puppies are so cute!

  19. I'm sorry to disagree, but as a Massage Therapist with 12 years of professional practice I'd like to know her theoretical construct behind this idea. It's absolutely not true!! You shouldn't ONLY massage tense areas because of compensatory strains and the connectivity of related muscles, but massaging around the spine is recommended and absolutely beneficial. However, massage is a learned skill and massaging a tense muscle properly requires training and know-how otherwise you can, indeed, make the area more tense. Acupuncturists should stick to what they know best :)

ha ha this must be my insecurities seeping out but the last think I would want on Valentine's day is my boyfriend rubbing all over my stomach. Not sexy for me at all. I was cracking up reading this because I could imagine how weirded out I would be after coming home from a nice Valentine's day dinner with a little extra food in my belly then having someone rub all over my stomach. I would die! ha ha

  25. My sweetie and I have studied partner Thai Yoga massage together and we've found a handful of favorite things that we like to do for each other. But we're also good about communicating when receiving massage just wouldn't feel relaxing.
I also practice a form of energy work called Reiki, and we like to offer that to each other too, and that is much more gentle and soothing sometimes.

I don't like massages, but I do like shoulder rubs, head and neck rubs, and hand rubs. Maybe this is why!

  29. That actually makes sense! I have to say, though, a tummy rub does NOT sounds relaxing. Maybe a foot massage instead? :)

Hehe, the tummy rub sounds awful to me too - I have extremely sensitive skin on my stomach and when my partner brushes it with his fingers (by accident - he knows I don't like it) I jump and shudder. (And I agree with the weird factor about coming home with a full stomach after a nice meal and getting it rubbed - even if my skin wasn't hyper-sensitive there, I'd hate it!) I like having my hair stroked and my head gently massaged best... soo relaxing.

  31. A tummy rub/massage does not sound relaxing to me- I'm pregnant and also my husband and I are both way too ticklish. I also get nauseous really easily. I do love head massages though!

My boyfriend often has trouble sleeping and whenever I rub his back (quite gently, we're alongside one another) he can go from awake and anxious to asleep in 5 mins flat - literally. We often joke about this me 'taming' him! Whilst this is anecdotal evidence, I really can't invest much belief in this tip!

  35. How funny! My boyfriend LOVES tummy rubs. He also asks me to rub his head a lot. I'd much rather have a foot massage!

  36. That's so sweet! I rub my kiddos' tummies (and backs) at bed time and they love it. Head rubs are good, too.

Also, I LOVE that raccoon photo at the top. So excited to find it to give to my hubby on Valentines...raccoons are "our" animal :)

I've always loved the idea of massages but I often tense up while actually getting them...mostly because it takes me a while to trust someone enough to let them touch me. (I *love* having my boyfriend or mom give me a backrub.)

Tummy rubs I'm not so sure about...I'm pretty self-conscious about my belly. But a little butt pat is fine. :)

  38. haha tummy rubs....really though when I was little and I would get a stomachache my mom would sit and rub my stomach...so I don't know if this is the best practice for me and my love ahah but interesting advice!

  42. I agree! Back rubs make me a little tense. I prefer back scratches so much more than back rubs! I don't know what it is, but they feel so great.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I actually find that the most effective thing is getting my back gently scratched.. or I guess grazed would be a better word. It probably wouldn't be the best option for ticklish people, though.

  45. @fauns and ferns - I was glad to read your different perspective. I found myself feeling quite skeptical while reading the acupuncturist's claims, so appreciated your input!

As with any claim like this, I always like to ask, "Where's the science?"

  46. Oh gaaawwwd. I hate Valentine's and reading posts like this just makes me think I am a nutcase for being so negative about it. I have a boyfriend who I am crazy in love with...but the thought of us doing anything romantic together *just because it's Valentine's* makes me cringe. I usually go out of my way to make sure it's as unromantic as possible.

  48. This is interesting. I'm willing to give it a try but I think I'll be too self conscious of my tummy and accentuating it's non- flatness.

  49. My boyfriend and I hate having our tummies rubbed but love getting back massages. I give him one every night and he falls asleep faster. We must just be the odd ones. :)

  50. hmmm, I hate my tummy to be rubbed. It's a very 'nails on a chalkboard' feeling to me. I prefer a back rub, foot rub OR the best; a hair playing session. Softness, and it's just simply stroking of hair, braiding, or flopping it around. It's what girls do when they are with each other all puppy piled. It's the best. My Husband is not as talented with the 'hair softness' as my girl friends are, lol.

  53. i don't think this is true. i'm finishing school as an LMT, specializing in craniosacral, and if this were the case, my entire schooling and potential career are done for! every study conducted shows that massage engages the parasympathetic nervous system which in turn reduces stress and encourages sleep. I hope this doesn't discourage your readers from massaging each other or getting massages!

Personally, I think a tummy rub would stress me out even more b/c I'm self conscious of my pooch. Lol! But, hey, I guess cats and dogs have it all figured out - they love tummy rubs, right? :)

I totally disagree with this, both from anecdotal evidence, and the study of anatomy and physiology. This is one of the most relaxing things in the evening, and I know I'm not imagining it. A stomach rub can be sexually arousing but I don't find it to be relaxing the way a back rub is. I'd like to know what scientific evidence backs up this claim. My husband and I even joke about how he is removing the "toxins" from me through the back massage. Yes, tension does build up around the spine (or so it seems) but why would massaging the area make it worse? (A massage is bad, but tiny pins in the same area is good?)

  58. I tried this with my boyfriend and we both thought it was a little disappointing. We have a tradition of slathering lotion on each other after showers, and in the process discovered how amazing chest rubs are! My boyfriend closes his eyes with a tranquil smile. I thought chest rubs were a little awkward myself at first (boobs, you know) - but they're really nice for ladies too!
