Bright pink lipstick

I usually wear red lipstick, but I'm really digging the hot pink lipstick that's popping up everywhere these days. I'm planning to try some at Sephora this weekend, and I've heard that best colors are NARS Carthage (if you want matte) or Stila Caprice (if you want shine). Would you wear it? Could pink be the new red?

  1. Well, yes it looks great on a supermodel or rap/r&b singer; not sure as a grocery shopper or when getting my oil changed.

  2. I'm a fan of NARS's Funny Face!

  3. MAC's Girl About Town is also a perfect hot pink! it was my very first lipstick purchase ever, very brave ;)

And I second NARS Funny Face!

  4. OOOOH! How fun for Spring. I'd totally wear it. I think it would look really fun with a white tee and jeans;)

  6. if you want to try it out on the cheap, covergirl's "divine" has been my go to for the last couple of weeks - it's an awesome, so pink-it's-almost-purple color that is SURPRISINGLY easy to pull off.

    ReplyDelete
  7. try covergirl lipstick in the shade "spellbound." it's the perfect shade like the ones above, and less than $10. it goes on super smooth and shiny, but blotting with a tissue makes it matte. my complexion is incredibly pale and i love it.

  8. i love it on others but i dont think i could pull it off.

  9. I just bought some lip stick thinking it was more red than it is pink... i was bummed but maybe it was fate! hah

  12. I'm a recent red lipstick convert, so I don't think I'm ready to switch it up yet. Sephora has a great, no-questions-asked return policy though, so even if the shades you pick don't end up working for you you can always return them! I just returned a red that went too neon pink on me. Borderline fluorescent, actually.

  13. For a bright pink lip that's a bit more wearable, try this: Start with a bit of clear lip balm, then fill in your entire lip with Shisedo Smoothing Lip Pencil in PK 304. It's a great way to get the look without letting it overpower you.

I want to love NARS Funny Face, but it makes my yellow-undertoned complexion look REALLY sallow. Any suggestions for a warmer-toned hot pink with decent staying power?

  16. In these photos it looks a little crazy to me... but maybe I will get into it on the tail end once I'm warmed up :-) I'm really not the fashion forward mom I'd like to be!

  17. I just learned that you can purchase cosmetics at CVS and return them if you don't end up liking them. No questions asked, even if it's open! So maybe the Cover Girl option is the best place to start!

    ReplyDelete
  18. DO, DO, DO! I love it! The brighter the better!

    ReplyDelete
  19. any idea what color it is that's being 'brushed' on in the last photo??? that one looks PERFECTLY matte!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sure, why not? Though I laugh because let's face it. Pink as the new red and red as the new pink....are pretty common tag lines.

But...since I see so many ppl reference Funny Face - I love it, too but it's on the new lead in lipstick list ... & it is high up. Perhaps, Joanna, you could link to that...I think originally in WaPost.

Cheers. And good luck with the hunt:)

    ReplyDelete
  21. All these women in the photos definitely pull it off but I think it's not for everyone...I look horrible in hot pink lipstick...it could be a $50 lipstick but w/ my skin tone and lips it looks cheap. But that's just me...

  23. I usually wear red as well, but these days I'm wearing bright pink and loving it !
I bought NARS's "Schiap", it's semi-matte so it looks matte but it's not too dry, and it looks beautiful.

  24. I'm loving the hot link for Spring! I love the look of the more matte lipsticks but they can end up looking too chalky or flaking off, any suggestions on how to best wear matte lipstick? Thanks!

  25. If I'm wearing hot pink lips for a day look I apply with my fingertip like a stain (mostly on the middle of my lips and cover with a sheer pink gloss. A pop of color without the freak-out moment in the mirror :)

  26. I bet it will look lovely on your complexion! This post comes at the perfect time; my hubby and I are headed to Florida in two weeks and I wanted something a littler more summary than my go-to shade (NARS Heat Wave- at your suggestion!). I'm going to have to stalk Sephora this weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I say a definite DO! I think it's a great pop of color for spring. Especially if you're wearing neutrals. How amazing is that second model's complexion?!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Do it! Alexis Bledel has the most beautiful porcelain/peaches creme complexion and the bright pink looks phenomenal. For my on the go, cheap pink, I go with Maybelline ColorSensational Fifth Ave. Fuchsia. It's amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I am pale as you and I have to pay attention at finding the right pink for me. This is really important as we can see on Rihanna & Alexis because they both wear difficult colours in my opinion!
But the first and the fourth picture make me want to buy a pink lipstick NOW and so I think you should do it, too ;)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Schiap by NARS! Slightly matte, stays all day, and works with my yellow skin tone.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Revlon's Lipbutter has a color called Lolipop that's bright but also somewhat sheer, so it's not too overwhelming. And aside from the pink lips, I'm loving the dewey, glowing skin on the model in the second picture!

  32. I've been seeing this really bright pale pink color that I would have NEVER thought to wear, but it looks so pretty. I was planning a Sephora trip to find it too :)

  36. Do! I got hooked last spring and wore it all through the summer. This, I think, is the most perfect shade of fuchsia:

    http://nomadic-d.blogspot.com/2011/06/fuchsia.html

I haven't been wearing it in winter, it just feels somehow too much, but you can bet as things warm up I'll be busting it out again!

  42. I love it! however, you will prob never see me wearing it, as I am super self conscious about my teeth so I avoid anything that draws attention... I think on a young fresh face its beautiful, and it looks best with no makeup and beautiful skin... Xo

  43. Looks great on the girls pictured, but I don't think I could pull it off. I have a hard time taking myself seriously when wearing bright lip colors. I still feel like a 9 year old girl playing dress up who just broke into my mom's makeup drawer!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I received a tube of a Nars one free once and thought I'd never use it, but its surprisingly easy to rock!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I am loving it, but I might not be able to pull it off with strawberry blond hair.

    ReplyDelete
  46. love it! i would wear it in a heart beat.
i actually have a stain that is a lighter version. i'm not sure about how white it makes my teeth look but i wear it anyway.

  47. Being Filipino, pinks work best on me during the summer when I've got a little tan going. Can't wait.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hmmm, i wonder how this shade would look with my red hair...

    ReplyDelete
  49. I always default to a classic red, but I do have the matte finish hot pink from MAC that I wear when I am feeling more fun and plyaful. It adds a fun twist to my look - and is so great for those days when you are ready for spring now!
    Much love,

    ReplyDelete
  54. I LOVE hot pink lipstick! It's so the new red.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I can never pull this off. However, if you rub a little tiny bit of red lipstick into the pink, it takes the edge off a little and still looks bright but in a subtler way :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. If you can find a shade that works with your skin tone, I say, go for it! It's a fresh way to look girlie yet sophisticated, especially as we head into spring.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Go for it! It would be great for spring!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Joanna, one thing (among many) that I admire about you is how you make the simplest of things special. Some women would see a trip to Sephora as part of a routine - just something to get done, or even hassle. You make a visit to Sephora to pick out lipstick part of a fairy tale. I love and am inspired by it!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Love this! I recently did a post about bright lips, they're so gorgeous and young looking! Great for spring. And Alexis Bledel is a goddess!

  66. I never wore lipstick until recently. My lips are bigger and I'm not crazy about my smile .. so I never wanted to attract too much attention to my mouth. But I found the perfect shade that makes all the difference for me. I wear Cinique's A Different Grape – it doesn't make me look like I face planted in popsicle, or attract too much attention to my mouth, but it does enough to make me look polished and grown up. Funny, I generally hate the color purple.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Fun! As a fellow pale, freckled brunette, I recommend Benefit's "my treat". At first, I got it for fun but in the end rocked it all last spring/summer and LOVED it!!!

    ReplyDelete
  68. i've just recently been brave enough to try red, so i'm definitely not ready for this color. i'm also pretty sure i would look like i was trying to pull off an 80s halloween costume with this shade, considering my pale skin and reddish hair. :(

  69. I LOVE Makeup Forever's lipstick in 36. It's a perfect bright pink/fuchsia that never fails me. Definitely put it on your try on list.

I play with color quite a bit. I love bright pink lipstick, but the pink has to be just right... I had one I loved a couple years back and I haven't found one that has measured up to it recently. I also am a fan of corals and orangy reds. My absolute go-to is Ambrosia from Clinique. Love it!

  71. I just went into Sephora on Tuesday to pick up bright pink but I chickened out. I keep getting the urge to go back, maybe this weekend! :)

I bought a Cover Girl lipstain last summer that I thougth was red, but ended up being very berry. Maybe I'll be in style with color after all!

  73. The bright pink lipstick is fabulous! Nars Carthage is such a fab fuchsia color! I have a super soft spot for Nars Schiap, but I tend to reach for Nars Funny Face. So I may just have to stop by Sephora to pick up Nars Carthage!

P.S. I think this pink pout will look uber kitschy chic on you! Do it! :)

  74. Growing up my Gram used to wear the brightest of pinks all the time. She wouldn't leave the house without it on. My sisters and I used to giggle about how "loud" the color was on our cute little Gram. She recently passed away and her entire collection of lip sticks (most of which hadn't even been opened yet) were split up amongst me and my sisters. I have absolutely loved wearing the bright pinks and thinking how silly I was so giggle about Gram. She was obviously more stylish and chic than I ever knew!

Here in Israel, this trend has been going on for a couple of years. It is either you wear hot hot pink lipstick or nothing at all. However, tan girls wear it mostly, so it is stuck in my brain that I wouldn't be able to pull it off since I have fair skin. However, the fourth picture really makes me want to try it!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I love MAC's Show Orchid - looks just like the one Alexis Bledel is wearing

    ReplyDelete
  77. I love this, I'm trying to be brave enough to wear hot pink lipstick! Just barely bought a tube of a gorgeous red, slowly working my way up!

  78. My mom gave me a bright pink metallic lipstick she got as a sample. I thought I would never wear it, but I tried once and have been wearing it almost every day for a few months now. It's "Poodle Skirt- Metallic" by Lancome and it goes with everything from casual to fancy!

  79. I've been wearing a bright pink for a couple months now and I love it! It goes with nearly everything (I shy away from it when I'm wearing coral-pinks) and it's less expected than red.
I say go for it! I use a Makeup Forever color that's slightly lighter. It is really doable with my light skin.

    - Young
    - Beautiful
    - Good Skin
    - No other makeup
    - Have a good smile (or just a smile), it looks terrible in a down-turned "regular face at work"

  122. my best friend is a makeup artist in nyc--she has always told me that pink is harder for people to pull off--reds with more of an orange in them tend to look better on most people since pink--hot pink especially tends to make your teeth look yellow-sh (yes, bummer, I know) You have to have serious bleach white teeth to pull this shade off--i say.
