Rainboots for everyday adventures (and traveling)

Two weeks ago, we talked about the five best shoes for traveling. But! A few readers pointed out that Hunter boots are tough squeeze into a suitcase (true). Happily, I was able to find two easy-to-pack boots, which I love...
Loeffler Randall makes the chicest rain boots. (I always spot gorgeous women wearing these around downtown Manhattan.) The bonus is, they look like cool booties even when it's not raining. So you don't have to switch your shoes when you get to dinner or work. They're a splurge, but you could keep them your whole life! I'm saving my pennies for these:)
Redfoot makes foldable rain boots! How genius is that?! You could just pop them in your suitcase. They're lightweight and waterproof, and have a fleece lining for warmth.

Which would you choose? Which suits your personality best? xoxo

  2. I have those Hunters in the first picture. I'm afraid I'm not exaggerating when I say "They're the loves of my life!"

  3. Those are awesome!!! I'm hankering for some from Joules with the bows on the back. MMMmmMM! Cute!

  4. Definitely the ones by Loeffler Randall, and this pair is on sale. xo.

  5. I LOVE the red pair and how cool that they are foldable? Genius! Kisses.

  6. These are so cute! I love the different colors!

  7. Love the red foldable ones. Genius.

  8. Awesome! But, hey, I went to Ireland last year for 5 days and somehow packed 2 pairs of boots (including my Hunter wellies). Definitely doable in just a standard suitcase if you need 'em!

  9. Cute! I have a lot of love for rain boots. I got mine from Marc Jacobs, and my favorite part is that they only cost like $25, that way it's not a tragedy if something happens to them.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Another thing to keep in mind is that you can stuff clothes INTO the boots when you're traveling to make more room.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Call me old fashioned, but I still love an original pair of Hunter wellies. Though the folding ones are genius! Why didn't anyone think of that sooner?! Umbrellas fold, makes sense!

  12. I go to the north of Scotland every year to visit family, and Hunters are the only footwear acceptable. Since I fly over there with my tiny carryon, I bought the Hunter Regent ( http://www.zappos.com/hunter-regent-black ) which looks more like a riding boot than a rain boot. I wear them on the flight there with a cozy pair of socks and leggings. They're easy to get off for security, once I'm on the plane I take them off and put them under the seat in front of me, and I end up in Scotland warm and dressed for the weather, unlike most of the Americans on the flight with me. :)

  13. We used to travel with clear rubber booties that slipped over your shoes. These are so much cuter!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I just got lace-up Sperry's that I love!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Seriously, those foldable boots are perfection! I SO need a pair.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I have the LR rain booties in gray and I absolutely love them. I receive so many compliments when I wear them out. My only complaint is that the shoestrings are fairly cheap - for $165 a pop, I expect them to be top quality, ya know?

Hunter also makes a Brixen boot which is much easier to squeeze into a suitcase. I, admittedly, have those as well. But I prefer my Loeffler Randall booties any day.

  17. great picks! i do LOVE my hunters though.

on a different note, i just wanted to say thank you for being so consistent with your posts and keeping your readers in the loop when you might not be posting as frequently. though it seems like a small thing, reading my favorite blogs brightens up my work day and it makes me sad (and strangely a bit frustrated!) when i check in and there is no post with no notice.

your blog is wonderful, and your a great example for mommys and bloggers elsewhere. :)

  19. Wow...the foldable boots are an amazing idea! Love the classic Hunters too.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Agh you are right, they are all so cute it is hard to pick! The redfoot pair seems so effortless and cozy with the fleece lining, but I would totally wear the booties even if it wasn't raining, too :P

  23. I really like the foldable boots!! For some reason, I've never been a fan of short boots....

When I travel, I frequently bring a pair of boots (albeit, not rain boots), but I usually plan to wear them on the plane so they aren't in my suitcase. :) I wear jeans with boots or a comfortable dress and boots and it works out well (although it can be a bit of a pain at security)

  24. I love the idea of a red rainboot, but the Tretorn boots fit my realy fit my personality best, as I'm mostly a tomboy. The folding Redfoots seem a good idea if you're packing a small carry-on, but if you're taking a full-sized suitcase, I think regular boots are just fine. Just pack your socks in them! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I kinda LOVE the Tretorn!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Gah!! Love that foldable pair. Pure genius! And in that bright red to match red cheeks. Love it.

  27. I love my hunters and either squash them in, strap them to the outside of my case or wear them for the journey! If I was buying new boots I'd look at the foldable ones though.

  28. thank you for this post! I live in Seattle and have only one pair of super huge, ugly rain boots..which I never wear. I instantly fell in love with the first pair

I really like the Tretorn boots and the foldable boots are ingenius.

I'm not so much a fan of the Loeffler Randall boots- to me they look weird. Maybe I just need to see them worn to visualize how they'd look with an outfit.

  31. the redfoot, red boots are a winner!! they are ADORABLE and would brighten up any rainy day :)

cheers! hope you are feeling better.

  32. I still love my Hunters too much not to pack them. My trick for packing bigger boots like Hunter, are to pack my clothes inside of them (obviously items that you don't mind rolling up / squishing). Plenty of room for everything that way!

    ReplyDelete
  33. As smartie pants as those foldable boots are, I'm still a Hunters girl!

  34. I love those red ones!

  35. Cole Haan makes some really amazing rainboots too.....they have quite a few options for bad weather and they can pass as real cute leather boots as well! Here are some I just ordered...

  36. Love the lace ups in Black!

If they can make them to look like a real lace up that's a slip on, then that is perfection.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Love the fold up boots! We just got back from the Philippines where we trudged through some serious mud in our rain boots (and struggled to keep them from getting stuck in the mud...). Every single one of us left our boots there. More room for souvenirs on the way back and the people living in that mud from day to day could certainly use them.

  38. Rainboots are a must have on campus. I wear my Hunters like they are going out of style.

They're not boots, but I can highly recommend these rain shoes at LL Bean: http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/63396?feat=507870-CL2&attrValue_0=Black They're super comfortable and I've received a ton of complements on them.

  48. I'm obsessed with the nomad drizzle rain shoes + the j.crew rainy day ballerina flats.

They are both super-cute rubber flats that masquerade as patent leather.

Perfect for summer showers, and perfect for wearing all day in the office without anyone knowing you've got your secret puddle-stompers on!

    Also, tinily packable!

  49. Nice rainboots are the best way to avoid being completely miserable when rain threatens to spoil plans. I only have a $25 pair of short purple plaid boots, but they cheer me up when skies are grey :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. oh wow, i am totalllllllly in love with those green ones! and they come in black and grey?! SWOON

    ReplyDelete
  51. LR booties are cute, but the whole point of rain boots is to be tall for the puddles! Hunter all the way!

    ReplyDelete
  52. i wear my hunters to travel all the time - but that's the trick. actually Wearing them when you travel. you don't have to worry about packing them, they're super easy to pull on and off when going through security, and they keep you warm on the flight. (i always get cold on airplanes).
p.s. for christmas, i got my husband the ankle lace-up hunters and they're super cool. might be easier to pack if you don't want to travel in them.

  53. p.s. the gal in the photo looks depressed, and by the looks of it, she has nothing to be depressed about. :)

  57. LOVE hunter wellies! do you have some? have you tried them on? TOTALLY worth it buying expensive rain boots instead being tempted into buying the cheap $20 pairs at the cheap jewelry stores in the city... hunters are sooo comfy! and don't feel as bulky.

(only tried them on, don't have any though, but every time it rains i wish i would give in and buy some!)

    cheers.

  58. These are great boots! I love booties (because I'm on the shorter side) so they would be perfect! Sometimes it's good to feel like an adult and not the Morton salt girl (although that can be fun!)

  59. I LOVE my Hunters, but do travel a lot, so I'd give just about anything for a pair I could pack. Doing my darndest to track those foldable ones down in my size... (thanks for the tip!!)

  67. I was super excited about the Loeffler Randall booties after seeing them on here and bought them on zappos. Unfortunately, they fit strangely on and the comments I'd seen on zappos about the dangerously thin heel proved true. Love the idea, if not the execution.

  74. The truth is that I'm obsessed with my hunter boots! I can't travel anywhere without them and it's also true that they're not easy if you're traveling with a small suitcase but I'm always wearing them when I fly so I don't have to pack them!

I really like the first pair you showed!

I am confused as to why these foldable boots are so genius. I just folded my rubber Aldo boots and now they are as small as a pair of flats...does the Hunter label make them unfoldable?

And why are the first pair of boots a splurge at $132 when the tan flats from J Crew in the original post are $125?

  77. I want the fold up ones! We have had NO rain in CA though. . . Maybe if I wear them it will come. ;)

  85. Living in Australia at the moment and I had to ditch my Hunter boots because they just. wouldn't. fit. in my suitcase (and I was WRONGLY told by my cousin that I wouldn't need galoshes in Melbourne). My parents just came to visit me and asked me what I wanted them to bring me. They expected me to say Reeses Peanut Butter cups or Twizzlers, but nope. All I wanted was my Hunter boots. They are on my feet this very moment. They're the best things in the world for girls in rainy climates. THE BEST!

(But those other ones are adorable! Anything that keeps the bottoms of your jeans dry is aces as far as I'm concerned...)

  86. OHH!!! i really love the short once, more office approperiate if im not bringing flats to change in to! :)

i love the once from Hunter because of the socks, but they are not very original anymore so i would opt for something a bit less known, like Viking :)

  87. Love those Redfoot foldable boots! I'm on the lookout for some cute rain boots and have decided against Hunters - they make my legs look strange (I'm always a bit touchy about the fit of tall boots around my "athletic calves"). Perhaps I'll give these an in-store look!
