Have you guys ever tried dry shampoo? It's a lifesaver when traveling. You just spray the shampoo on, and it instantly makes your hair look clean and full of volume. So, if you have an overnight flight, or can't check into your hotel right away, or explore a big city all day, you can still look fresh and gorgeous.My friend Caroline (of hair tutorial fame) first told me about it. "I swear by it," says Caroline, who travels all the time for work. "After being touristy all day, I hit my hair with the dry shampoo, and it looks clean and pretty at night."
Caroline's favorite is Klorane. "Every magazine editor and stylist uses this one," she says. "You'll see it on all their tables." Bonus: It's very gentle with natural, non-toxic ingredients.

ReplyDeleteI live for dry shampoo. I used to have to wash my hair daily or it would get greasy. One of my New Year's resolutions last year was to wash every other day or every third day. I use the Psst dry shampoo-widely available at drug stores and extremely inexpensive. It is amazing. My hair looks incredible and people are constantly complimenting me on it. I cannot recommend Psst enough - PLUS, IT'S FUN TO SAY!

ReplyDeleteI agree Klorane is the BEST! I prefer their non-aerosol version, which is more in the baby powder form. It is much easier to work into your hair, gives you more control, and lasts A LOT longer than the aerosol. I cannot live without it, and it has seriously changed the health of my hair, given that I wash, dry, and straighten it less. LOVE!

I've always wanted to try this, but my hair can be so very greasy if not washed frequently. How well does this work with straight, fine-haired, oily ladies! I hate sporting the ragamuffin look after a day outdoors, or worse, the post-flight limp static-y look!

I use Klorane, and I do like it. My only issue is that I have very dark hair and it is hard to brush it in to disappear. Also, it contains butane. Not so fond of putting butane in my hair. I am looking for an alternative that is clear and I heard that there are tinted brands to blend better with dark hair. Anyone know of one? Otherwise, I love the volume and texture it gives my very fine hair.

I like dry shampoo on those mornings you are running late or those days you just don't feel like fixing the ole hair. I have tried Kenra brand and the Tresemme. Tresemme I hated. It was just too much for my hair. It made it feel dirtier than it was to start with. I liked the Kenra though. And I'll definitely be on the look out for the Klorane brand. Thanks for sharing!

Anyone with dark hair have any suggestions? I've tried them all but they never seem to blend nicely into my hair (even after brushing etc). I end up with white streaks or patches.

ReplyDeleteI use the tresemme dry shampoo. You can find it in any drug store for about $5 and it smells really nice. I keep some in my desk at work too in case I need a lift.

My favorite brand is Algemarin. You can only get it online (far as I know), and in a pinch today I bought some Suave at Target. Ugh--it smells like artificial peach. But yes, dry shampoo is an absolute must for blondes.

After trying so many different dry shampoos I found this one, which is really effective, smells fantastic and, best of all is really inexpensive!
ReplyDeleteI've used Klorane, Pssst!, Tresemme, baby powder, Bumble + Bumble hair powder...my current fave is Suave. It blends in much better than Tresemme and it's supercheap. My hair is really thick and takes forever to dry so I don't wash it every day - the Suave adds some awesome volume and smells amazing.

ReplyDeleteDry shampoo is the best thing that's ever happened.One of my best girl friend's always had GORGEOUS hair and I finally had to ask her secret. Sure enough, she uses a DISCOUNT brand ($6 a can!) of dry shampoo--Blush. It is a white powder and we both have dark hair--I usually apply it 15 minutes before I have to leave (think time to do make up etc), and then blow it out with the cold setting on a hair dryer(just for a minute). I'll also use it right before bed so it absorbs overnight leaving 'clean' hair and no white residue!(Sadie- I have curly hair too, this is when I'll dry shampoo when skipping a day or two of washing)

I love dry shampoo!!! It's a must if you have bangs! I use it on my clean bangs, believe it or not- Spraying them while they're still clean ensures oil will never have a chance to mess 'em all up!

Dry shampoo might be the greatest thing that ever happened to me! I've been using the Ojon powder (not spray)and I love it.
ReplyDeleteI always like to take some sort of toner or rose water to spray on my face during/after flights. It's so refreshing. I also take NARS Orgasm Illuminator to brighten up my dull, post flight skin.
I recommend Batiste from Ulta. They have tinted ones for blondes and brunettes as well as regular. Doesn't make your feel like it has product in it.
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of Serge Normant dry shampoo - I get it at Barney's. It doesn't leave that white powdery residue like the Klorane kind, and it smells a-mazing. I have super fine hair and this gives it a nice Parisian-chic boost.

ReplyDeletehowever, I've never found any brand of dry shampoo that could replace washing my hair. they make my scalp feel gritty, I had how they make my skin feel after brushing them out, and they also make the hair look dull because naturally they are meant to soak up the oils. I think that they can work well on blonde hair, and are particularly good for enlongating the lifespan of your highlights as they can lighten the roots a little, but as a brunette, I have never liked the result of them i my hair.
I have lots of straight silky long hair so perhaps they work better for stronger hair?
do NOT get Tresemme brand dry shampoo...my hair got really crunchy and still looked greasy

BUT to those that asked about dry shampoo for brunettes, I know Bumble & Bumble makes a hair powder that supposedly works the same way, and it comes in four different colors, including two for brunettes.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was backpacking in Europe with my best friend, I picked up the habit of hanging on to the extra sugar packets that came with my coffee/tea. On the train/plane, right before getting to our destination, I'd slip into the restroom and scrub my face with the sugar and a little water, and then rinse off. The sugar dissolves quickly, so it's not too abrasive, and I'd get off the train/plane feeling fresh-faced.

ReplyDeleteDry shampoo is a time and hair saver for me! My bangs get greasy way before the rest of my hair and I hate washing my hair every day just to keep my bangs clean. I just stole my mom's klorane from her and I love it. Some dry shampoos like Bumble and Bumble don't leave a white residue, but they make my hair feel dirtier than it already was. With Klorane it still feels clean and blends evenly with dark hair like mine.

ReplyDeleteAs far as beauty products for travel, I like to bring Eau Thermale Avene spring water face mist for a mid-flight refresher. If it's an overnight flight, I also bring face wipes-- I really like Yes to Cucumbers and Korres' pomegranate-scented ones.
I've used baby powder for years, but recently switched to Ojon Full Detox Rub-Out Dry Cleansing Powder, which actually is supposed to cleanse your hair as well. It is absolutely amazing. It hides grease so well that I really have to remind myself of the last time I actually washed my hair. I usually only wash once or twice a week.
ReplyDeleteIt adds volume and blends really easily. I have dark red, curly hair and I can usually just take my finger tips and rub it in. I'll even use it in freshly cleaned hair just to give it some texture. I suppose my only complaint about the product is its medicinal smell, but that scent fades almost immediately.

I work at a salon where we sell Rene Furterer (they make two sizes of dry shampoo, and also they have a dandruff shampoo called Krlorane that looks like similar packaging, so I'm wondering if RF is a parent company of Khlorane?) and Bumble and Bumble. As mentioned previously, Bb makes tinted ones (white for light blondes, blondeish which is a dark blonde color, brown medium brown, and black)- these work as dry shampoos or you can not brush them out and they are really great for teasing and formal updos, too. They discontinued the red version (which I am upset about, personally). Our Bb rep says everyone can use the white, but I'm dubious since it really is white, not clear. If you want a clear one for a styling product (NOT a dry shampoo, but the volumizing effect) try Schwartzkopf Osis Dust It.

Love dry shampoo! I am Asian so I have straight, DARK, hair that tends to get greasy fast. My hair stylist was really trying to get me to only wash my hair every other day, but I didn’t feel like I could make that second day without my hair looking like a big old grease ball. I tried Tresemme’s dry shampoo but it left flakes in my hair and made it look like I had dandruff! I’m now in love with Batiste. It’s cheap, works great (even with my black hair) and smells lovely.

ReplyDeleteKlorane is good, yes. Use it or another brand on all but the bangs. My big tip, if you have bangs: pull back your hair into ponytail. Wash your bangs with a bit of real shampoo - yes. Then quickly dry straight w/a hairdryer if you have it on hand. Or fluff them a bit. Your hair feels so much cleaner if the bangs are clean for real.
ReplyDeleteGiven my dry hair and temperamental hair color (red, not naturally), I wash my hair only 1-3 times a week, so I use dry shampoo regularly. I've actually found Burt's Bees Baby Bee Dusting Powder to do the trick just as well, plus it smells wonderful and is much cheaper than dry shampoos. Not to mention it's talc free and all natural. :)

Dry Shampoo is my new favorite thing. My coworker got me hooked. I use psst cause it's cheap and works really well (even though I have dark brown hair the white brushes out really easily). Now my hair is way healthier (down to 2-3 washings a week) and it always looks great!

It took a few days of clenching my teeth through especially greasy hair days to finally get used to not washing it every day, but when you make it over the hump, your hair produces WAY less oil (bc when you wash it daily, it strips the oil and your scalp works to replenish it). Dry shampoo is great for late-day refreshing, or stretching a shampoo out for two or three days.
ReplyDeleteI tried the Bumble and Bumble in a Sephora and loved it--but not $35 worth of loving. I actually like the $3 Suave version a lot. And I recently lucked out in stumbling upon a bunch of travel sized Pssssst at Urban Outfitters that was on clearance. Less than $1 apiece! Oscar Blandi powder is good (their aerosol doesn't last long enough). I'll have to try Klorane!
In a pinch, cornstarch works really well - and isn't smelly like baby powder.
ReplyDeleteI bought Sevi Maranta dry shampoo recently and it works very well, and they have some different options for colors. I use neutral though, and it blends right in.
Works well on the days when my bangs have been under a winter hat for a long while!
Oscar Blandi dry shampoo is amazing! I'm so much more likely to put in the extra time to blow dry my hair knowing that I can use this for the next 2 or 3 days.
ReplyDeleteI love dry shampoo! Before I finally started using it on my dark, very straight, very fine hair that demands to be washed every day, I would use a tiny bit of baby powder on the roots. One day, when I was running late and out of baby powder, I decided to use a tiny bit of my husband's Gold Bond powder. I'd done it before and it worked fine.

I keep a package of refreshing face wipes (my fave is any of the Body Shop choices) in my carry-on bag so I can freshen up after a long flight and appear bright and clean when I arrive at my destination. They remove makeup that has surely creased into my face at that point, and dead skin cells, leaving me with a clean face to either re-apply makeup to or go bare. They feel refreshing and wake me up, too. No water necessary!

I have been obsessed with Batiste Tropical dry shampoo for many years. I use it all of the time (I buy in bulk when I visit the UK - it's so cheap and it comes in travel sizes, too!) and only wash my hair about twice a week. It smells delicious and I actually prefer how my hair looks a few days after washing with dry shampoo than when just washed! It really does amazing things where volume is concerned.
ReplyDeleteI have tried a bunch and agree the Klorane one is gentle - some of the alcohol one make my scalp itch. BEST invention, if only there were more affordable and actually good products available for brunettes. I resist from using them because it makes my black hair look ashy in general.

ReplyDeleteI love dry shampoo! I have fine blonde hair and it is amazing for giving volume as well as soaking up oil. I even use it on clean hair when I want extra volume and a bit of root coverage. I have tried the Klorane brand and I liked it but it only lasted about 2uses and had some sketchy sounding chemicals in it.I have tried the Bumble & Bumble as well but it has some even worse chemicals and is very pricey. My favorite is by Cake, it's a Canadian company and is mostly all natural, it comes in 2 shades that both smell amazing. It also comes in a tiny travel size. You can buy it at Sephora here in Canada and online as well. I've tried quite a few dry shampoo brand and this is by far my fav. http://cakebeauty.com/home.asp

Vaseline. This is such a weird tip, but I use it all the time when traveling, and at home! Doesn't keep your hair looking fresh, obviously, but it does keep your lips amazingly moisturized, removes makeup like a charm, and can help dry skin when traveling through different climates. It's like 5 products in one... saves tons of space when packing!

I have also been known to go a whole 5 days without washing while on vacation. I love baby powder when my hair is lighter colored, and Sauve dry shampoo every single day. ReplyDeleteI love dry shampoo and have used various brands over the years. I now use Baking Powder. It's amazing and super cheap! It absorbs the oil, and gives me volume. I have it in an old salt shaker that I shake on my roots. I just flip my hair; rub it around and style as I normally would. I have blonde hair, so I've never had an issue w/ it looking white.

I use baby powder, just a little right at the roots near my part. Sometimes this makes my hair a bit static-y so a spritz of shine serum on the ends helps. Its a life saver when traveling, and the baby powder does double duty for after shower too.

I have really thin, fine, oily hair and have had to shampoo it every day of my life (or at least - every day that I want to look presentable). After I discovered dry shampoo, it was the first time that I actually had another option! I still have to shower the night before, but not having to wash my hair every morning is a whole new world. And yes, it's also great when you've had a long day and want to look nice at night. I use the $5 Tresemme stuff at drug stores and it works great.

I have tried Pssst, it was nice, but not nearly as nice as Klorane and the smell is so much stronger. Hated Tresemme, couldn't even finish the bottle, tried two different versions and chucked them both.
ReplyDeleteif you are blonde you can use baby powder and it works just as well and smells fresh! and is cheap, especially if you've got babies in the house already. my hair dresser swears by it.

ReplyDeleteI have very dark, fine hair and agree with those who say DO NOT use Tresemme's dry shampoo. Use it and you have no choice to shampoo your hair. I would like to try Klorane, have tried to go the cheap route, but might try Batiste first!

No experience with dry shampoo, though this does sound perfect for traveling! I used to swear by Clarins beauty flash balm following a flight, or really any time my skin felt lackluster. It's a bit pricey for a small tube, though, so I'd love to discover something similar but a bit less expensive.

ReplyDeletenot sure if anyone has mentioned sachajuan's volume powder but it is absolutely amazing! i have thin hair and bangs so i have to wash my hair everyday and usually by 6 or 7pm have to apply dry shampoo if i plan on going out after work. i have tried so many brands and this is my favorite. it not only makes your hair look "clean" but it also volumizes and makes my hair look thicker. i like the texture and it doesn't make your hair sticky but since i have thin hair i do shampoo a little extra the day after to make sure it's all out. they also have a travel size available although it's hard to find. woodley & bunny in bk sells it.

ReplyDeleteI use dry shampoo a few times a week. The ones with out alcohol are much better- like TJ Bed Head Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo. I got a blow out at Dry Bar and the stylist used this after and the blow out lasted 5 days!!!
ReplyDeleteAnother thing that I do if in a rush but have a little bit more time is to wash the front pieces of my hair with shampoo then blow out. Its nice because the hair that touches your face and nose are clean smelling and takes less than half the time of a full wash/blow out.
Dry shampoo is a God send! Having to keep my hair extra moisturized to reduce frizz (I have wavy/curly hair) but I usually straighten and use a curling iron everyday. My hair can look slightly greasy after a day and I don't want to do that much damage to my hair to shampoo/dry/straighten/curl my hair EVERYDAY so I use it for SURE! lol :)

Klorane in a spray is great, but doesn't last long, and the price increased by 5 or 6 dollars since it started getting recommended in magazines!
Now I'm using Oscar Blandi (the powder version). I use it every two days, and have had the same bottle for almost a year. It's a bit expensive when you get around buying it, but it lasts for a very long time.

ReplyDeleteI love the idea behind dry shampoo (longer lasting clean means less washing, which means your colour lasts longer). However, dry shampoo doesn't like me. I've tried the Tresemme version a couple of times, but always break out in itchy hives around my hair line. Maybe a more natural formula would make a difference?
ReplyDeleteDry Shampoo has literally changed my life! My morning routine is so much shorter without having to wash and dry my hair each day! I only wash my hair every 3 days now and it's never looked healthier! Batiste is my absolute favorite brand - it's cheap and works amazing!
ReplyDeleteI also swear by dry shampoo. It's actually better for your hair if you don't wash it every day, so since I tend to get greasy after just one day I through this in on day two (sometimes day 3!) and I'm good to go! LOVE!

ReplyDeleteI've tried a dry shampoo that is a powder before, but being that my hair is practically black I often end looking like I've got grey hair if I accidently apply too much. I've wanted to try other dry shampoos, but didn't want to spend money on something that might not work well. I will definitely try this (and maybe some other suggestions listed in the comments)!.
I've used the regular Tresemme kind and I just started using the strengthening formula, it's a lifesaver when you don't have time to shower twice a day. Before dry shampoo was all over the place I just used regular baby powder
ReplyDeleteI swear by Oscar Blandi dry shampoo. The loose powder not the aerosol. I carry the little travel size bottle with me everywhere. It's been a lifesaver on so many trips, mornings when I just don't have a minute to spare for a shower, or when I just want to add a little texture to my hair. Gave it to all my girlfriends one year as stocking stuffers and now they are hooked too.

ReplyDeleteBatiste is a great (and classic brand). That's what I use from england anyway, I'm not sure if it is available in the US but if it is, you ladies should give it a try. Amazing and they do a range of different scents too! (the original and the fresh scents are lovely but they also do summery, floral ones etc). My mam used to use it when she was younger and it's definitely something I use often! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI use TIGI's "Dirty Secret" dry shampoo from their 'Rockstar' line- and I LOVE it! It smells great and works both as an alternative to shampooing AND as a great texturizer. I have VERY fine and oil-prone hair, and often if I change my style from day to night I have to rewash. With this stuff, I just spray in, restyle and go! It's saved me SO much time AND actual shampoo!

ReplyDeleteYes! Dry shampoo is THE BEST! Bastite (available in England) is a lifesaver at summer music festivals. Bumble and Bumble is the best for darker hair. I've just moved to America and started using Suave, I'm going to try everyone's suggestions from here :)

ReplyDeleteI have lots of thin blonde wavey hair & this is what I've experienced...
Tresemme foam (for curly hair) is too heavy for my limp hair.
Tresemme spray for straighter hair is a little too sticky for me (feels like hair spray the day after).
Ojon is a little too perfumey & i've never been able to make it through a whole bottle because the nozzle gets clogged after first use (plus it's pricey).
Gosh is probably my second favourite, absorbs nicely into the hair, a little on the heavy side so acts somewhat like a dry shampoo + hairspray all in one - it does have a more permanent whiteness to it, so wouldn't recommend on brunettes or darker. BIG downfall to Gosh - it is super toxic, I almost choke when using it, but am always happy with the end product... turn on the bathroom FAN!
Klorane is my absolute favourite as it's light, does not leave as much residue in your hair, does not have a strong smell, you can breathe while using it & it's more natural/easy on your hair.
But.. when in doubt go with Baby Powder, it's what my mom & grandma used! Apply with caution if you are not blonde.
For darker haired individuals I imagine the search is a little tougher, I hear Bumble & Bumble has one made for dark hair!
Got 2 Be Fat-tastic Dry Shampoo works really well. I am happy I shelled out a few bucks to try it. It can be a life-saver on those days when I should have washed, but couldn't....

I LOVE dry shampoo and I like Klorane too but they all seem pretty good and the mini travel size ones are great for the plane. I also love tinted moisturiser MAC is my go to and everyone always tells me I look so healthy and glowing - I love the simplicity - put it on , no powdering necessary over the top and good to go.

dry shampoo has changed my life. i used to wash my hair everyday, because it was just so oily. but since using dry shampoo i probably wash it 2-3 times per week. it also makes my hair easier to style- it has more body and holds styles easier. i finally got hold of some klorane (it's always sold out!) and i'm really looking forward to using it. i would definitely recommend dry shampoo.

I don't know if it doesn't work, or if it wears off, but by the end of the day I have greasy hair. When I went to Coachella I used baby powder, it's a good option when there is a 2 hour wait for the showers, but it didn't add anything to my hair, just kept me from looking as gross as I might have...
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of the Oribe dry texturizing spray. It's insta-sexy super volume bed head in a bottle. I only wash my hair once or twice a week because it's very long, but the last few days my hair gets greasy at the roots and very heavy and flat. I usually use it on my last day or two before washing because it's a pretty serious product... Make sure to use a light hand with it! A little goes a long way.

ReplyDeleteJust want to throw out there that this product is far from non-toxic. If you're used to toxins in your shampoo than I suppose a toxic dry shampoo is nothing to bat an eyelash at.
If... you have a problem with toxic products being called non-toxic, I'd recommend a quick search on: Cyclomethicone or the (as usual, unhelpful) parfum. Search this site or many others http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ if you're curious about effects to you and your environment.

Great post. For some reason, though, every spray on dry shampoo I have ever used has left my hair at least feeling dirty, and often looking a little dirty... it might be because I have very fine hair. The one I like - which is a miracle worker - is powdered dry shampoo by Oscar Blandi. It has a lemon verbena scent and leaves my hair feeling clean, and fuller, as you mentioned. (I actually got into the habit of just using it in the morning after washing and drying my hair, pyrely for the purpose of adding body, and you can also use it if you accidentally apply too much product.) My hair color is light enough that the white powder disappears into it.

ReplyDeleteAlso, just to add... in a pinch, yes, baby powder (either talc-based or cornstarch-based) does work for people with light-colored hair, and it works better (for me) than every spray dry shampoo I have tried. But no, it does not work as well as a good-quality powder dry shampoo. Good powder dry shampoos are made with specific starches which absorb oils better than baby powder does. If you haven't done so, give them a try!
ReplyDeleteBreaking news, breaking news! There is a new drugstore brand spray dry shampoo which, in my opinion, is vastly superior to the other drugstore brands I've tried. I'm a devotee of Oscar Blandi powder dry shampoo... I buy it online and love how it refreshes dirty hair, soaks up excess product on just-cleaned hair, and adds volume throughout the day. I also like how it comes in highly-portable small travel bottles.
ReplyDeleteBut! I have tried both Psssst! and Tresseme spray dry shampoos, and they both made my hair feel even MORE dirty, even when used very sparingly. It's possible this is because I have quite fine hair... I think these products work fine on thicker hair. (But it's we fine-haired girls (and guys) who usually have most need for dry shampoo.)
Today, though, I discovered John Frieda Luxurious Volume Anytime Volume Refresher. It is a spray dry shampoo, although if you didn't look at the bottle carefully, you might think it was just a volumizer. Nope - it's a featherweight dry shampoo which actually leaves my hair feeling and looking CLEAN, and with more volume. It smells pretty good, to boot. This may be my new go-to day-to-day dry shampoo. It's readily available and also costs less than Oscar Blandi (though it's possible that dollar for dollar, I get more uses out of the Oscar Blandi.) I don't think the John Frieda "cleans" QUITE as well, so for camping and long flights I'll probably take the Oscar Blandi. (Plus, I haven't seen this available in a travel-size container.) But, the powder it leaves behind is much easier to blend into your hair, and you can use it several times throughout the day, if you desire.
I SWEAR by dry shampoo! I shower everyday but after getting a bold new haircut last Friday --- I was terrified to wash out the style my hairdresser did because I had a weekend of events - I was thinking I'd never recapture it! Thank goodness for dry shampoo. I rocked the look all weekend and everyone raved! I use a < $4 brand from CVS called Pssssssst. :) Works fantastic! Suave makes a $7 one now too.
