Have a wonderful long weekend!

Do you have any fun plans for the weekend? The weather is getting chilly in New York, so we're having a couple friends over tomorrow evening for chili and cornbread. Maybe we'll go crazy and bust out the Taboo. :) Hope you have a cozy weekend, and here are a few great (mostly travel-themed) posts from around the web...

This made me laugh out loud.

The Polar Bear Club is officially nuts.

LOVE this red dress.

Baby rock stars.

Great old couples.

Cute short wedding dress.

Sleep mask for planes.

An underwater hiking trail.

Regarding travel shoes, a few readers asked for easy-to-pack rain boots. These short boots would do the trick!

A brilliant guide to Paris with kids.

FYI, Shopbop is having a huge winter sale.

Anne Lamott is writing a new book!!!

Freshly squeezed cocktails.

Plus, six Cup of Jo travel posts, just for fun:
* Maine perfume.
* Sleeping outside in Denmark.
* Bike rush hour.
* Iceland escape.
* Haha, people are awesome.
* The Cup of Jo Guide to NYC.

  2. i was on an underwater trail last weekend - by the edmonds ferry near seattle, there's an underwater park with thick lines of seaweed placed so you can find the next attraction. we saw a 4 food lingcod and a starfish large enough to eat a toddler.

  3. It's not a long weekend here in sydney, but my husband and i are on our 50ft yacht anchored in Bantry Bay a peaceful and picturesque waterway 10 minutes from the city of Sydney. I am going to cook a couple of gourmet bacon and egg rolls, along side a platter of mangoes peaches and strawberries and well cheers ourselves with a glass of bubbles! WYWH

    I love Anne, too. And she would probably love it if you explained to your foreign readers why we have a long weekend. Seriously, you never ever address this sort of thing on the blog and I am sorry about it.

    My weekend plans mainly consist of reading my typography homework (which, thankfully, is actually a lot of nerdy fun!!).

    I wish more people recognized the "long weekend" for what it is: Martin Luther King Day. So many people get time off from work and school, yet they don't spend that time celebrating the man behind the holiday or teaching themselves/children about loving thy fellow man or learning about people from different walks of life. Instead, it's become just a day to some. How sad.

  43. Well, I am glad that so many people are looking forward to a long weekend here in the States. I am, too. Still, I would like to acknowledge what two commenters have said: It is MLK day. There is a way to integrate a short statement of that fact into even a "lifestyle" blog.

  47. every year in early January the local United Way hosts a "polar bear plunge" where the open the community center pool and ask volunteers to raise money, dress up, and dive into icy water from the diving board! My best friend & I dressed up like Michael Phelps, gold medals and all, and jumped in hand in hand! It was hilarious and we raised a lot of money! We were "freezin' for a reason!" (at least thats what our souvenir t shirts said!) :)

    p.s. i love your blog, so much! thanks for sharing!

  54. Dear Jo,
    My name is Martina. I am interior designer. I live in Gdynia, small city by the sea, in Poland.
    I do love your blog. Thank you so much for giving me a chance to know YOU and the City better.
    I fall in love with New York few year ago. In February I gonna visit the City for third time. This time I want to see something more than just places shown in guidebooks, such as small galleries, lovely cafes, bookstores with second-hand book, vintage stores etc...can I count on your knowledge? Please, share with me everything you know! It would mean a lot to me.
    Thanks
    Martyna

    also, i love the cafes in Nolita -- you can walk around and find some beautiful little cafes and boutiques in that neighborhood. you'll also find the great bookstore Jackson McNally. near there is also the Housing Works used bookstore on Crosby Street, it is fantastic.

    for galleries, you can walk around chelsea--you might be sure to go to the David Zwirner gallery, which has a really cool "infinity" light exhibit right now.
