Happy Weekend - I have a wedding or two on Saturday to photograph and beach all day on Sunday, yay!!! I love January!!!
ReplyDeleteOh gosh the Invisible mother thing is so creepy yet so motherly and loving at the same time, Thanks for sharing. Have a lovely weekend.
ReplyDeleteScrambling to pull out some old family photos of my great grandmother as a baby to see if I find a 'hidden mother' that is so weird!
ReplyDeleteI love this photo so much. It reminds me of the first time my husband and I visited Paris. It was January and freezing and he bundled me in his big green coat, just like Mel with Audrey.
ReplyDeleteShoot, now I want to go back to Paris!
Whoaaa!! Invisible mother pics are sooo totally weird. When and why would that ever seem like a good idea!? Great find!
ReplyDeletep.s. Do you get stopped a lot in NYC or on other travels by Cup of Jo readers? That topic/situation would be a really great blog post!
Any picture of Audrey is adorable. And never seen anything like that invisible mother thing before. Very different.
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend!

funny, my friend Clare lives in Venice and is from NY and has a young son, but his name is Henry. But I wonder if she knows this woman because you'd think their paths would cross.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link, Joanna, I appreciate the love!
Love the hair resolutions! Good luck finding that reader!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking to Kate's cover songs! Wow! I am so impressed. Have a happy weekend. xo.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a lovely night out for the two of you!

I worked at Sears Portrait Studio during college and definitely took a few "invisible mother" shots. It was usually just arms coming from the side to stabilize a little squirmer, tho. Hopefully less obvious?

Ohh how great that you're still celebrating the holidays! I'll be going to a going away dinner for a friend studying abroad. She's off to England and I so wish that she could stuff me in her suitcase and take me with her!
ReplyDeleteLove all the links! Thank you, Jo! Especially those Vintage Esquire covers. I really do wish magazines had covers like that again. Have a great weekend! And good luck finding that reader!
So nice to have fans of your blog on the other side of the U.S. Santa Monica is such a nice place.

How funny - I'm a brown haired Cup of Jo reader (obviously!) and just moved from NYC to just outside of Venice with my young son, Charlie, but that was not me at the Promenade. I did see you once at City Bakery but didn't want to bother you.
ReplyDeleteGreat selection for the weekend!Have fun!

Happy weekend to you! I hope you enjoy your party and Toby enjoys his sound machine...ha!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to also point you over to something wonderful happening on one of my favorite blogs, E Tells Tales. She asked her readers to leave anonymous resolutions and the outpouring of hearts and souls has been quite breathtaking. I thought it would be something you would enjoy, Joanna:

I would just love the cookbook charm!
ReplyDeleteThat ASOS polka dot dress is so cute! Have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteThe hidden mother pictures are so strange. I don't know why the mother doesn't just appear in the photograph with the children. Perhaps the pictures are for in-laws and others who want one of the children and not just with one parent. !!!
ReplyDeleteI am hoping the Invisible Mother was looked at with a sense of humor...people did have a sense of humor back then, too, albeit stifled. If you look at them and think of them as kind of funny instead of creepy, I can kind of get behind it...
ReplyDeleteCreepy invisible mother photos.
ReplyDeleteI hope the reader you're looking to contact gets in touch. I'm sure she will.
I third a post about yours (and Alex's) experiences being recognized! I thought that was so funny/cute when you posted that someone recognized him as Alex from Cup of Jo.
those business cards are just THE best. not much planned in advance for the weekend as usual but farmers market tomorrow
ReplyDeleteWhoa, the invisible mothers thing is a bit creepy but.. in a funny way too? Love your blog! xo

I love this post every week and love looking at the links. The music was ace, invisible mother freaky....how bad could that child posssibly have been to need to be held!
ReplyDeleteThose business cards are brilliant!
ReplyDeleteOH Toby has a sound machine- they're such fun! My Dad loved his, even threatened to use it during a funeral. When he died in April my sister and I couldn't resist using it in our speech. Totally lightened the load.
ReplyDeletei love those ballet flats....in so many colors, i'm not sure i could make my mind up....

ReplyDeleteHi Joanna!! I'm Katrina, a 22 year old girl from the Philippines. I'd just like to say I love love love your blog! I check it out everyday! It definitely brightens up my day each time I see a new blog post. It's consistently quirky, fun, interesting and helpful too! I'm so glad to have come across your blog a couple of months back. You've inspired me to try out new things and keep my eyes open for beautiful gems around me. :) Thank You. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteHugs and kisses from my sunny island in the Philippines! :)
XOXO, Katrina B.
P.S. You've also inspired me to muster up the courage to start my own blog! Any tips?
Hope you can email me at : mingborromeo@yahoo.com
Keeping my fingers crossed! :) X
I saw this, "I LOVE this coat, even though I'm not pregnant." and noticed that Hatch was now a sponsor and knew *immediately* that it would be a link to their site.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a few comments of late asking about sponsorship and your posts and hope you might write about your policies. The Cosabella thong post reminded me that they had been a sponsor; J Crew is not listed as a sponsor but you link to them at least weekly and I think they were featured in every single gift guide.
I love your blog, and think it's great if you get paid to write it (as I don't pay to read it!). I'm sure it's a lot of work and it's a highlight of my day that you post so frequently and thoughtfully. But it's starting to feel a bit like hidden advertising and a simple, honest statement about these policies would be great.
(I think this line at Unruly Things is spot on: "Sell Simply is a sponsor to Unruly Things and we were compensated for this post. all of my words and opinions on the site are true. I feel as though Sell Simply is a fantastic product and I hope to see more etsy users taking advantage of it!" (http://www.unruly-things.com/2011/10/let-me-tell-you-about-sell-simply.html)
Thank you!
Dear joanna,
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and read it every day from college in Oxford england-my english tutor's husband writes Retronaut where you found the hidden mother pictures (how creepy they are)- they have two sweet children called Zebedee and Ruby!
thank you for all your lovely posts,
Amelia x
Re: the Invisible Mother, another common practice was to have people sit in special chairs with neck braces to keep their heads still during the long exposure time. The stiff formality of old photographs is partially a product of the sitter's physical discomfort.
ReplyDeleteLove the flats!!! I wore red ballet flats at my wedding and I would TOTALLY do it again! :-D
ReplyDeletesweet try to find the mother-reader from Venice! :)
ReplyDeletehappy new year, all the best for you and your loved ones!
They still do the "invisible mother" at some photo studios - it's an easy way for the baby to stay upright and feel comforted at the same time! All of my baby photos have me being held up by my gramma standing behind the backdrop :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE THIS. so cute, girl.
ReplyDeletelove, rach.

Awesome round-up and happy weekend! xoxo
ReplyDeleteHmm, Susan's point about advertising/sponsorship is a very interesting one... I'm an 'ad-free blog'ger myself, and I'm interested in how corporate advertising affects the blogosphere.
ReplyDeletei love the invisible mother pictures! i have pictures with my mom's uncle hiding behind something or the other, holding me up!
ReplyDeleteI have brownish hair and a son named Charlie and read your blog Joanna but I currently live in South Dakota! heh heh :)
ReplyDeleteI just trawled through all the comments to see if the mother of Charlie read this post :-) he he
ReplyDeleteHope you're having a lovely weekend! I'm in Australia and it is way too hot, I'm missing winter!

Those vintage Esquire covers are great! Awesome old covers like this is exactly why I collect magazines! I can't wait to be old so that all this collecting can finally be considered useful rather than "hoard-ful".
ReplyDeleteHi! Thanks for the link about hairstyles 2012!

Ooohhh she is timeless!! Always pretty :o)
ReplyDeleteHi Joanna, it's Libby. :) I sent you an email but in case you don't see it, you can contact me at libbygrass@yahoo.com. xo
ReplyDeleteLovely!!!Love them!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Invisible Mother thing = creepy.
ReplyDeleteThat ASOS polka dot dress is so cute! Have a good weekend
ReplyDeletethe hair resolutions made my day!!! Very inspiring, in a very simple way!!! My hair is driving me nuts, latelly, and I don't know what to do with it... Would like to cut it very short, but my husband hates it!! You should do a post about our (stupid, yet sweet)"subordination" to our soulmates tastes and likes! We should please to ourselfs first, yet we give so much importance to what they think ;-)
ReplyDeleteLove the black and white photos!
ReplyDeleteMy mum used to match my brother and me every Christmas Eve...we grew out of fully matching since its hard to find something we both like so we've now settled for coordinating jammies! Sometimes my mum will actually make matching flannel bottoms and then buy different t-shirts. I love that other families do this too!
ReplyDeleteWhats wrong with JCrew? I love JCrew... some people... So you like to write about JCrew, not sure what the big deal is, and why people feel the need to anonymously post rude comments, at least own up to your opinion!
ReplyDeleteKates voice is awesome, I am so happy to have those songs now! Just downloaded...
Thanks Joanna!
i adore that coat! another thing to look forward to when pregnant {still, a looong way off}! thank you,xo
ReplyDeleteHi! I'm pretty confident know your reader from Venice!! I will email you....
ReplyDeleteHi, Joanna! I'm a dedicated reader in NYC, and I think my boyfriend and I passed you on the Brooklyn bridge on Saturday. Were you biking with Toby and Alex? It was such a perfect day to be out!
