Have a magical weekend!

What are you up to this weekend? We can't fit a tree into our apartment (and we'll have a big one in California anyway), so instead Alex draped white lights all over the living room furniture, even on the TV, which looks crazy but kind of awesome. Toby has been getting into the spirit (the photo, above, is of our neighborhood pharmacy's window display). Hope you have a wonderful weekend, and here are a few posts from around the web....

Five things on my own wishlist:
* Lacy underwear. :)
* Cozy sweater.
* Square earrings.
* Dinner here.
* A kiss on top of the Empire State Building.

Do you get a Christmas tree? Genius idea for small apartments.

What a heartwarming morning goodbye!

Hamburger wrapping paper.

Amazing choose-your-own adventure!!!

Ahhh, pets.

Holiday nail polish ideas.

Frog to prince.

Love this beautiful quarterly made in Portland.

Words to live by.

Zooey's funny holiday tips.

Pretty earrings.

This bride wore her mother's wedding dress.

Tag, you're it!

That goodbye video is adorable! I have a mini tree, which I've had for nearly ten years that I keep in my room. I still live with my parents, who keep a much larger and more decorated tree in the living room.

That photo of Toby is so cute!!! Are you taking him to see the window displays in the department stores? That was always one of my favorite things to do in Chicago when I was younger. My family would bundle up and we'd look at all the lovely scenes in the windows! :)

I grew up with Christmas trees and love them--but one of my favorites was the one we had during a rare Christmas trip. My dad made it out of a piece of paper wrapped into a cone and decorated with pine clippings that had previously adorned the room service tray, and it was the most wonderful tiny "tree" I can imagine.

I can't believe I've been reading your blog for so long that Toby is already becoming such a big boy.

Wishing all of you a magical holdiay season. :-)

This list makes me so excited to start the holiday season! I (stupidly) scheduled myself to take the GRE next week, so I'm postponing holiday shenanigans until then. Have a great weekend!

I couldn't help but laugh when you wrote you couldn't get a Christmas tree because of the size of your apartment - my apartment is smaller than yours and I have a huge tree! I just can't help it.:-D I turn off all the lights except on the tree at night and sit and stare at the tree like a small child. Love it!!

egads! toby standing solo. i realize this is nothing new, but it's still shocking to behold!

My boyfriend and I just got a tiny Norfolk Island Pine today, which we've decorated for the holiday but since it's a potted house plant we can keep it gracing our house for years to come. And 20 years from now maybe we'll be in a house big enough to accommodate our now-tiny tree :D

so happy to be leaving the Sydney sun for a trip home to Boston this year - nothing says Christmas like the east cost. think i might just make a trip to the empire states building this year too!

I love your blog, and with that being said, about not having any room for a christmas tree, made me a little sad. There is a great quote out there- and basically it states this, it doesn't matter how tall your christmas tree is, in the eyes of a child, it is at least 30ft. tall! real trees are magic, and therapy and an instant happy the minute you turn them on. if you can, make room. it is worth it, i promise. merry christmas, Nan

Oooh I would love to see a picture of your holiday lights! Sounds a bit magical :) We didn't buy or put up a tree either, for a few reasons. So I came up with a better idea! I painted a little Charlie Brown tree and my husband helped paint ornaments on it! Come check it out @ amynicoleandmatthew.blogspot.com

And those lacey underwear are adorable! So sassy and sexy! I just might need some for after the baby comes :)

Space is scarce at our place too, plus we'll be away over Christmas, so we didn't get a tree either. But we did hang up a wreath with lights and our favorite ornaments. It's really cheerful and only takes wall-space!

I live in a STUDIO apartment with my little girl, and since we moved out of a 4-bedroom place, we have 14 chairs, two couches, and two beds in here plus boxes piled to the ceiling (it doesn't look as messy as it sounds), so we REALLY don't have room for a tree, but we have a tree! We got a 4-foot tree on our dining table, and we just removed the bottom branches and eat under it. Plus we have German heritage so it has real candles on it.

I love Alex's xmas decor idea...I'd pretty much use Christmas lights on and in and around everything year round if possible (I hate to say it, there are some remnants of my college decorating style left in me).

We lived in a teeny tiny Brooklyn apartment until May...I'm not sure what to do with all of my Christmas tree space this year...it's almost overwhelming. I think I'll miss the cleanup of our little baby trees of years past (bought on a street corner) when it comes time to take down this year's BIG tree!

Great roundup as always! Those nail ideas from Refinery 29 actually look very do-able. Love the wedding post. The dress looks great as do the bridesmaids dresses, I really like that she chose black.

Hi Joanna! I just stumbled upon your blog after googling "why do mothers in Denmark leave their babies outside" and found your fantastic article about it from a few months ago. I'm not a mother myself, but a frequent traveler and blogger and was so thrilled to find your explanation.

Your blog is delightful, and I have already bookmarked it as a favorite. Keep up the good work!

dear joanna, there's a book you'd love (about trains) that you need if you/toby don't already have. it's "two little trains" http://www.amazon.com/Little-Trains-Margaret-Wise-Brown/dp/0060283769

my daughter used to play trains all over the house, using carpet fringe and any other thing she could find. it was so fun to see.

merry christmas and safe travels.

I love to see brides who have worn their mom's wedding dresses! I got married in October, and wore my mom's dress--slightly altered. She was married in 1981, so the sleeves were a bit large for 2011. But thanks to my amazing seamstress, my dress fit me perfectly and looked modern yet still vintage.

Great round-up as usual! And even better pic of Toby. Love it! My son is obsessed with construction trucks and would love Toby's hoodie. Is it available online?

I thought this was a good Christmas tree idea for a small apartment or someone in a college dorm. Plus, it doubles as a chalkboard! So fun. http://www.oyezperez.com/the-freshmas-tree-light-up-chalkboard/
