Do you have any fun plans for the weekend? We're bundling up and taking Toby to the holiday train show in the Bronx. (He loves trains almost as much as cars, buses, taxis and garbage trucks, so he's going to be psyched:) Also, my gift guide will be posted all next week. Hope you have a wonderful, relaxing weekend, and here are a few posts from around the web...11 things you believed as a kid.
Before-and-after photo. (Takes a second to load.)
Roast potatoes and asparagus look delicious.
How to choose the right red lipstick.
A wedding dress straight out of Jane Austen.
J.Crew's gift guide is actually really good.
Getting mugged in NYC.
Cozy Brooklyn apartment.
Diane Keaton's new book is getting rave reviews.
The secret to tying a bow.
Bonjour!
Yale offers a class on...NYC nightlife.
Legwarmers under a wedding dress. :)

I didn't know it was possible for a cheesecake to look that great.
ReplyDeletelovely NYC story
ReplyDeleteI'm reading Then Again now, it's a really beautiful memoir. You will love it!
ReplyDeleteThat before and after photo is incredible!!
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend!
Behold the power of retouching! I'll be wrapping presents and working on a few photo projects this weekend. Have a great one!
ReplyDeleteLove that wedding dress!
ReplyDeleteLaying low this weekend. Watching Forks Over Knives tonight. Expecting my life to be different tomorrow after watching it!
Enjoy the trains!!
julie, i just got it! can't wait to start reading.
ReplyDeleteHave a fantastic time this weekend, Joanna and that Brooklyn flat is so beautiful. I'm totally over the moon with the kitchen. The wooden floor and the dark walls are spot on. xo
ReplyDeleteThat before and after photo of Faith Hill is nuts. Her arm in the after photo looks wacky...like she has no elbow. The more I look at it, the more grossed out I get haha!

Photoshop - it makes me mad! She looks great in the before picture. Just leave it be and let people have realistic beauty and aging standards!
ReplyDeleteHave a good one!
I love that NPR story about the man who was mugged...so beautiful that he was able to see past the violence and give the teen what he really needed...a friend, a meal and some good advice! Xo, Katie
ReplyDeleteHoliday train show - sounds like fun. We are getting a tree this weekend :D

Thanks for sharing the retouch photo. I think she looks better (and more human) in the pre-retouch. I also think they took away the wrinkles from her eyes that make it clear that's a *real* smile - kind of sad.
ReplyDeletemy little brother was obsessed with trains too - every christmas we had a large one that went around the christmas tree.
ReplyDeleteand if you have a minute, id love for you to check out what we're doing today over on my blog to take a stand against AIDS, its easy and its fun :)
love,

love love love all the links (as usual)!! especially that little kitchen in the brooklyn apartment!
ReplyDeletehave a wonderful weekend!!
So glad you're taking Toby to the holiday train show. I've convinced a few friends here in DC that we should take their kids to see holiday lights at the Zoo & also at a park. Go ice skating on the Mall, get hot chocolate, etc. The experiences of the holidays, the songs, etc. are really important. I remember some of those more than I do the presents I received when I was little.
ReplyDeletexoxo
How fun - living in Connecticut, the holiday train show was on our calendar every year. Sadly, the boys are too old (or so they think!) this year and we'll miss the experience dearly. Make sure you reserve tickets before you go - it is a popular destination! Enjoy! Cynthia
ReplyDeleteI just went to Diane Keaton's book reading! She was amazing.
ReplyDeleteHere's my blog about it:

If you all don't have it...you should get Toby Richard Scarry's book Things That Go.
ReplyDeleteYou will ALL be enthralled at the pickle car, finding gold bug, etc.
Trust me, I'm a librarian and an aunt..I know these things!
It must be holiday-event-weekend across the country. So much i going on around my neck of the woods too! I'm taknig my son Jack to Hollydazzle in Newport News, Va tonight, and Colonial Williamsburg's famous Grand Illumination on Sunday!
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend!

Wow! That NPR story was incredible! I feel like if I were ever mugged (knock on wood), I would be too scared to do that. That man was incredibly brave to even talk to him after. Just shows you deep down there is good in people.
ReplyDeleteSo glad I had time to check your list today...that NPR story is really something. I'm rather moved and so happy to know that there are still good people in the world. And that before & after photo of Faith is RIDICULOUS and made me sad (esp. since I have 2 daughters!)...she looks so much better, with character, in the before photo! Hope you enjoy the train show ~ happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteI love your weekend posts links! Especially glad to see the before and after pic. What would be so wrong with posting reality? I just don't get it. Have a good weekend1
ReplyDeleteThat before/after link makes me nauseous. I'm disgusted with all the changes they made.
ReplyDeletethat wedding dress is absolute perFECtion!
ReplyDeleteWe went to the NYBG train show last weekend--it was so much fun. We bought our kids these fantastic train cookies in the shop afterwards...if they still have them, I highly recommend!!
ReplyDeleteI love tha chambray shirt at J. Crew. And also the 11 things you believe as a kid. Classic!
ReplyDeletewow that before and after image is disturbing. i had a friend that worked on retouching and it just sounded too crazy to be true...
ReplyDeleteI agree that the before and after is disturbing. It sets up such unrealistic expectations for women - and men.
ReplyDeleteI really love your blog.

ReplyDeletehang on a second, what do you mean blankets aren't an impenetrable barrier from monsters?
ReplyDeletealso, i know someone who actually got coal in their stocking one christmas... she was about 7 and had told her parents she no longer believed in santa, oops!! how mean is that?!
i am a bit in love with the bow tutorial, i am terrible at tying bows (which i have always blamed on being left handed) so maybe that will help me in the future. i will practice on my all star laces!

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/29/technology/software-to-rate-how-drastically-photos-are-retouched.html

As always, thank you for the wonderful links.
