Gift Guide Part #1: Your Brilliant Mom Who Can Finish the New York Times Crossword Puzzle and Still Signs Her Emails "Mommy."
Diane Keaton's fantastic new memoir about her relationship with her mother--and Woody Allen, Warren Beatty and Al Pacino. $14.35.
Red lipstick, because she'd never buy it for herself. (Bonus: It's moisturizing.) $32.
The iconic Finnish Aalto vase, because it makes even a bunch of daisies look straight out of Helsinki. $50.
Brownies and chocolate chip cookies...combined. Six for $14.
A beautiful tiny bar necklace, $49. (I wear this everyday and adore it.)
Pinecone candles, $29.
Silk pillowcase, which not only feels good (and perfectly cold!) but helps you not get wrinkles when you sleep. $18.
A rad natural sea sponge, because she always had one when you were growing up. They're also unbelievably gentle on your face. $5.

Amagansett Sea Salt with a sweet, briny flavor, made by a husband and wife. All steps--from the ocean to the bottle--take place in their tiny town in the Hamptons. (Photos by the New York Times.)
Striped slippers from France, $88. (Or duvet socks!)
P.S. More gifts for moms...

Thanks for the ideas! That book would be a great read.
Yay for Alvar Aalto (I was married in a church designed by him in Seinäjoki, Finland) <3
Pinecone candles!! Love.
This is a great list. I'm working the equivalent of these for my mom this year, but with a local twist - sea salt from the Cambodian coast, provincial macadamia honey, silk scarves from a weaving village, etc.
These are all such great choices, love the sea salt! I posted a gift guide for moms today as well! :)
PIECE OF CAKE. PEACE OF MIND.
I've had a pair of the duvet socks for years and they are pretty ugly, but so so so comfy!
Great gift guide!

I LOVED the Diane Keaton book. So thoughtful and sweet. A poignant look back on a life from a daughter who'd become a mother. Great gift idea!

Oh - Fancy That.
Don't mock the duvet socks! I have down booties (they are for backpacking/camping from REI) and they are still one of the best presents I have received. They are awkward looking but I use them all the time!

joanna, do you have the 16 or 18 inch necklace? can't decide--thanks!
So proud you picked Aalto's Savoy vase! :) My Finnish grandma gave me one many years ago, in a very dark blue. I love it! Great picks.
So many good ideas here! Candles for my stepmom, the book for my aunt, the pillowcases for everyyone on my list, and the necklace for me ;) There's some other great stuff at minoux too, loving those delicate bow hoops. Thanks so much! I can't wait to see your other recommendations!

not to be rude- i LOVE your blog, but sponging is a extremely destructive practice that happens in my backyard. i'm all for using natural sponges instead of adding more nonrecyclable synthetic crap to our lives, but only if they're aquacultured (grown at "farms" in captivity)... unless they specifically say they're aquacultured, then "sustainably harvested" still means habitat destruction.
also, my mom would shoot me if i gave her anything anti-wrinkle, but that pillow looks amazing ;p
I really look forward to all your gift guides. This one is perfectQ
oh, finally. the gift guide is back. you're making me very happy, very! thanks.

THANK YOU! I've been looking for a gift for my mom who definitely finishes the new york times crossword puzzle and still signs emails, "love momma". I'm 26...
Any fashion gifts for the older ladies in their 50's?? I can't seem to find anything that doesn't look too "young" for her. Help!
I have the Alvar Aalto vase! Got it in Helsinki when I was there in college. So so lovely :) I want those striped slippers for myself!
Thanks for such great ideas! I've been wanting to buy my sisters silk pillowcases but could only find ones that were crazy expensive - these LL Bean ones are lovely and cheap! And I'll be keeping those choccy baked goods to myself thank you:)
