Holiday parties are coming up, and with glasses of bubbly come hangovers. What's your hangover remedy? Mine used to be a giant Chipotle burrito (#classy), but then I heard a genius cure that weirdly seems to work...
Reflexology. When you wake up, rub the outer edge of your right foot, halfway between the middle of your foot and your pinky toe. This is the reflex point to the liver. You may notice some "crunchy" texture, which is a sign that some congestion is in the area. Kind of gross! But also kind of awesome!

ahh thanks for the tip! i notice if i eat anything before bed after drinking it helps me (if i don't end up throwing it up). if i do end up with a bag hang over I usually get Five Guys or any type of greasy burger.
ReplyDeletekate
If I know it's going to be really festive, I'll take 2 ibuprofen prior to the party. And then midday the next day, bacon burgers and fries. Holla.
ReplyDeleteAn iced mocha and bacon. Bacon solves all kinds of problems, right?
ReplyDeleteDrinking lots of water before you go to bed always helps!
ReplyDeleteI swear by this: before bed, take a Vitamin B Complex vitamin with a large glass of water. I got the idea from a friend who ended up in the hospital's drunk tank, who said they gave him a shot of Vitamin B to help him recover. The water helps rehydrate you while you sleep. It works so well!
ReplyDeleteI heard burned toast, eggs, honey, and coffeed all of them have nutrients to recover. Sometimes love a huge diet coke, also, a friend told me once, "don't you just crave a salad when you are hungover?" I said, no, not really, but ever since have leaned toward veggies because I think they help bring balance. :)
ReplyDeleteWow these are great!
ReplyDeleteooh these are good tips. I always chug EmergenC the next day. And don't forget a big Bloody Mary! ha.
ReplyDeletegreasy fries always work for me... along with a sprite :)
ReplyDeleteI am from Eastern Europe, i.e. big drinking culture. We enjoy drinking but we also know how to do it WELL. The best morning-after meal is heavy on YOGURT and PICKLES. Make your own.
ReplyDeleteDouble cheeseburger (McDonalds) and a big coke!
ReplyDeleteLooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot's of water!
drink a ton of water before bed and pop 2 asprin. in the morning…..er…afternoon, when you wake up eat mashed potatoes! :)
ReplyDeleteYou're kid is really cute, Joanna!
ReplyDeleteMy hangover cure is a BC Powder and an ice cold diet coke, double caffeine seems to help. Your ideas seem a lot healthier, though. :)
Not completely related, but funny:
ReplyDeleteI went to dinner with my cousins, dad and stepmom recently. We had all had a drink before dinner and one during dinner. When we got back to the house, my stepmother asked my cousin "What do you drink after you've been drinking?" Thinking she meant hangover cure, she replied "I dunno, water? What do you drink after you've been drinking?" My stepmother's response: "I drink vodka." Oy!
Oh my god Joanna, I used to wolf down those burritos through my crazy college days! Those were all I would crave in the mornings I was deathly hungover!
ReplyDeletei usually just go ahead and sleep the whole next day...
ReplyDeletemy hangover cure is finally learning when to stop before i get to the point where i'll have a hangover! :) barring that solution, i do the burnt toast and water things as well.
ReplyDeleteI have to try the burnt toast idea now that it's 10 years later ;)
ReplyDeleteA Green Monster is an ABSOLUTE MIRACLE. No bones about it.
ReplyDeletehttp://greenmonstermovement.com/
I don't find that burnt toast works, myself. I've read that whilst the carbon in treated charcoal is used to absorb toxins in hospitals sometimes, it's not the same stuff as on toast.
Always looking for more hangover cures. Not that I get many, of course... :S
the"burnt" part of toast is actually carcinogenic and beyond toxic for your body. Comparably speaking, the hangover/alcohol is actually BETTER for you than the toast (if we are talking health here)... so I'd watch out with this one
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, Joanna- My hangover cure in colleg & early 20s was aChipotle burrito too!! And I have to agree with your #tag, so true! Love that!
ReplyDeleteFor me it's got to be lots of crisps and lots of very, very trashy TV... any excuse! xx
ReplyDeletei would have never thought of that - interesting!
ReplyDeleteps. i'm hosting my first giveaway and i'd love for your to enter

I do a combination of St. John's Wort, dandelion root and Milk Thistle- works like a charm every time!!!
ReplyDeleteI work in sports medicine, and we give "medilyte" potassium tablets to athletes who are dehydrated and to prevent heat illness. In grad school, we discovered they work miracles for hangovers too :) they're OTC, but I've only been able to find them in medical supply catalogs. Needless to say, they are going in our hotel guest bags for our wedding this summer!
ReplyDeleteI have gotten a lot better about not drinking to the point of hangovers, but I find that if I'm feeling less than stellar the morning after a party, a Starbucks Frappucino is a big help. I don't know if it's the cold or the sugar or the extra shot of espresso I ask for, but it works for me!
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty much the only time I go to Starbucks!
whoa--that's great because i always burn toast! crunchy bits, that is kind of gross ;)
ReplyDeleteNot to be a Debbie Downer, but the burnt toast is thought by many to be carcinogenic. Better to deal with the hangover!
ReplyDeleteFountain coke and grease!
ReplyDeleteMilk Thistle supplement available at whole foods before drinking with lots of water. Works every time. Milk thistle helps the liver function.
ReplyDeleteNew follower here. I can't wait to read your posts :)

I pop a multi-vitamin before bed. It seems to work!
ReplyDeleteNo. HONESTLY. The wondercure for a hangover is oatmeal. Have a bowl of instant oatmeal with a large glass of water with a little OJ in it. You will be right as rain. I also can't sleep after I have been drinking, so I get up early and take a walk. I like to clean during this first (still drunk) wake-up, too. It's like magic when I wake up from my afternoon nap and the house is in order and the dishes in the washer. <3
ReplyDeleteChilaquiles!
ReplyDeleteI haven't discovered a cure yet but I've been told NOT to take a hot shower. It makes you sicker.
ReplyDeleteLooks like I'm burnin some toast tonight! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat tips, especially loving the reflexology. I heard it's beast to eat something with butter or a little grease (french fries!) before you start drinking to line your stomach and help with the alcohol absorption. Not sure if that is true or not...
ReplyDeleteWOW great tips! I will have to remember this!
ReplyDeleteOnce upon a time, I would eat a really greasy hamburger the next morning...
ReplyDeleteA greasy cheeseburger is my go-to hangover cure! xo.
ReplyDeleteEmergen-C packets. Have one before you go to bed and one when you wake up=golden
ReplyDeletei've never heard of either of these. but it's worth a shot!
ReplyDeleteCarbs. And coffee.
ReplyDeleteWow never heard of either of these before! I usually just drink a lot of water and eat something greasy in the morning! So interesting. Thanks for the tips!

When I wake up, I eat a greasy fast food biscuit....so gross but it always works. I don't eat them any other time and I have no idea how I ever discovered this but I'm sure glad I did!!!
ReplyDeleteInteresting choices - I always eat fresh salad and veggies the next day and sometimes a Coke. But I wish you would've posted this yesterday! It might've saved me from this seemingly extra loooong day at work today. :X
ReplyDeleteChipotle burritos make everything better. :)
ReplyDeleteHow about not drinking so much that you get a hangover? Wasn't that something which was cool when you were a teenager?
ReplyDeleteBe careful with the burnt toast - it causes cancer!
see, the problem with a remedy that requires you take it BEFORE going to bed is that if you are drunk enough to induce a hangover, you're not thinking about "oh i need to make some perfectly burnt toast" right before bed. your thoughts are more like "bed. comfy. crash. sleep." LOL but in all seriousness, if I ever have my wits about me enough, I will be trying that :)
ReplyDeletei always have the same amount of water as I have had to drink. double fist it, one hand is holding a glass of wine, the other hand is holding a bottle of water.
ReplyDeleteBut remember the burnt part of the toast is carcinogenic!
ReplyDeleteFor me, Quickeze and Panadol, not that I've needed them for a long while.
Antacids negate the acidic effects of alcohol (which make you want to throw up) and panadol softens the pains.
Also, citrus drinks will do you no good the following day.
Hair of the dog works 100% of the time for a hangover. Mimosas or screwdrivers are my choice over bloody mary's, which I usually can't handle hungover!
ReplyDeleteOh man and lately I can get a hangover with just 2 glasses of wine! I think our tolerance goes down as we get older! Drinking coconut water helps! :)
ReplyDeletehilarious that you posted this today....I'll use the burnt toast tip next time!
ReplyDelete*ouch*
Very interesting! I usually drink as much water as possible and take 3 Advils before I pass out!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.sealedwithakay.com
Oh! Also, Pedialite and Gatorade works wonders too!
ReplyDeleteBefore bed: large glass of water and an Excedrin. Wake up: 1 Odwalla Superfood.
ReplyDeleteBerocca and water!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteCoconut water. Drink a big glass before bed and another when you wake up. It helps to restore lost electrolytes and is super hydrating :).
ReplyDeleteWater, Water and more water... the soup... sleep...
ReplyDeleteand learn how to drink or have fun without it.

Ohh wow, great tips thanks! Cola is a good cure for me, saw it on tv once, something to do with replacing all your sugars & salts & vitamins and stuff...also seems to work with headaches! But also, never leave a glass of what ever you were drinking the night before on your bedside table...I'm sure you can guess my reaction when I was surprised to discover what I was drinking wasn't squash! lol xx
ReplyDeleteI've seen it mentioned already, but I swear by taking two Aleve before going to bed (headaches are the worst part for me). A good breakfast the next day helps tummy trouble.
ReplyDeleteV8. If I drink two of these babies, I am good to go. :)
ReplyDeletefountain coca cola + MISO SOUP the next day.
ReplyDeleteNever heard about burnt toast.. ill try it!
ReplyDeletegreat tips! I rarely drink just because of the dreaded hangover
ReplyDeleteBurnt toast before bed? Interesting...I am definitely going to have to try this one!
ReplyDeletei take a multivitamin or b vitamins if i have them before bed with a big glass of water-- or right when i wake up if i forget the night before.
ReplyDeletethat's also why you don't get hangovers as easily from homebrew-- it's unfiltered and yeast has a lot of vitamin b6. at least, that's my excuse for drinking homebrew. one of many excuses. :)
I never have a hangover, I find it such an infantile thing to go to far with alcohol. It's bad for you. Not to mention you do stupid things when you have too much, you're useless the day after, it costs.. There are only reasons not to drink for me.
ReplyDeleteEating a loaf of bread and 2 litres of water does the trick for me!
ReplyDeleteMaria xx

I've never had a hangover before, and I plan to keep it that way (surviving college without one probably means I'm safe for life). I've heard they're horrible, and I absolutely hate being sick (biggest baby ever). The burnt toast cure seems surprising considering the fact that charcoal is used to induce vomiting, which I suppose you would already be more susceptible to if you've been drinking.
ReplyDeleteREFLEXOLOGY rocks!!... it actually helped bring my baby into this world..... (i was overdue and reflexology saved me from being induced!!!)
ReplyDeleteI think the best cure for me is to plan ahead. I drink glasses and glasses of water during the day before a night out. And I make sure to have a glass between every couple of drinks. The only time I have had a hangover is when I didn't follow this, at which point my lovely boyfriend bought me a greasy burger. :)
ReplyDeletebe careful of the burnt toast - it has carcinogenic compounds (acrylamide, etc) and your little family is too cute to eat carcinogens : )
ReplyDeletehttp://www.abc.net.au/health/talkinghealth/factbuster/stories/2011/01/25/3093063.htm
Looks like no one has mentioned chia seeds! They are fool-proof given they absorb any liquid up to 8 times their size. And they're good for you! I eat a tablespoon before I crash into bed. Works every time ! :)
ReplyDeleteA giant bowl of Pho and a lot of water!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of doing either of these things. I'll definitely be trying the burnt toast- hopefully I won't walk away and burn down the house, lol. My hangover go-to is also a fatty burrito. I don't think it makes me feel better, but it is a great excuse to eat such amazing food.
ReplyDeleteGinger ale with bitters. It has tons of herbal thingy majigities in it. When I waited tables in college, our shift manager would always make it for us when came in hungover.
ReplyDeleteAlso, smart water (but that might be a placebo effect, I'm not sure).
For some reason, the idea of a "crunchy texture" in my foot makes me nauseous! LOL.
ReplyDeleteYeah I would NOT recommend eating burnt toast regularly. Consuming straight carbon like that dramatically increases your chances of getting stomach cancer.
ReplyDeleteAs an alternative, I would recommend a bread-y breakfast and some pedialyte for electrolytes!
Okay, bear with me...a big ol' glass of Metamucil before bed. Got me through my own roarin' twenties in the West Village. I SWEAR the fiber soaks it all up....just cant vouch for the HOW it works. Then again, who cares? It works!
ReplyDelete(And no one can try to tell you its carcinogenic.)
And I just have to say, it absolutely cracks me up that so many people have such a problem with the negative side effects of regularly consuming burnt toast, but not a soul seems bothered by being so drunk on a regular basis that you would need to consume it....
ReplyDeleteA bottle of coconut water (no special flavor) before bed!
ReplyDeleteThank god I'm not the only one who was thinking - "Oh no.. burnt toast is bad! Carcinogen!"
ReplyDeleteBefore going to bed: drinking lots of water and taking 2 aspirin. If I was too drunk to remember to do that.... then the following morning: a greasy bacon egg & cheese sandwich and a fountain coke!
it may have already been said, but start taking vitamin b now, if you haven't. it really does help. :)
ReplyDeleteMassive full English breakfast sorts me and the boyf out :)
ReplyDeleteI also heard that burnt toast causes cancer. I only just brown my toast these days since hearing that.
x
dramamine for when you are throwing up sick. it will help you go back to bed and get some much needed rest. BC powder for any headaches, and pedialyte or any other oral rehydration drink for the dehydration. i've got it down to a science.
ReplyDeleteAs my mom moved me into my college dorm she left me with this advice: After you drink, no matter the amount, take a B complex vitamin, 4 advil and drink 1 FULL water bottle. This works! I put together mini hangover kits as 21st birthday gifts now. Mom is always right.
ReplyDeletePho Soup. A lot of people swear by it. Must be the spiciness and sodium that gets you back on track.
ReplyDeleteI went to a bachelorette party a couple weeks ago, and at the end of the night, one of the girls brought out a bag of chia seeds and said that if we mixed about a tablespoon in water and drank it we would be great the next morning! I did, and felt completely normal when I woke up! :)
ReplyDeleteToast and tea! Chamomile tea, to be precise. I love peppermint tea just for headaches, but the mint is too strong for a weak stomach. And soothing music. There's nothing like a little Mozart at low volume when feeling sick.
ReplyDeleteI know you try to keep this blog light and fun. I don't want to be prudish, because I know that some people need to drink to have a good time. I don't really know too much about the topic, but it seems to me that recommending burnt toast isn't the healthiest thing... and advocating hangovers isn't really cool. When you have so many followers, don't you feel you have a slight responsibility to not provide advice that might be detrimental to people's health?? I'm not trying to be rude, just curious.
ReplyDeleteBurnt toast, huh? Fascinating! I usually just try to drink lots of water, and then in the morning tons of coffee and a huge greasy breakfast sandwich. And lots of naps. But I don't know if any of that helps. Definitely going to try burnt toast over the holidays.
ReplyDeletehttp://nomadic-d.blogspot.com/
Alka Seltzer before going to bed!!
ReplyDeleteChipotle has ALWAYS been my favorite hangover food! (#soulmates). The two biggest issues with is: a) it is the ONLY food that does not deliver in the city, and b)I always crave it at 9am, aka two hours before it opens. Currently in Berlin Chipotle-less...it's killing me!
ReplyDeleteThe reflexology idea is both gross and amazing, will have to put that to the test. The burned toast sounds mostly gross...
ReplyDeleteLemon calippos are my personal favourite hangover cure, although after a big night out a couple of months ago I put together my own list of coping strategies - link below, if anyone is interested.
http://theftangent.wordpress.com/2011/07/02/welcome-to-hangover-population-you-and-anyone-else-stupid-enough-to-mix-their-drinks-last-night/
burnt toast, really'?! Wish I had know that in my pre-pregnancy days haha.
ReplyDeletemy cure has alwats been a fountain diet coke and 2 aleve.

mikie and kristen
I am a doctor and completely agree with people saying that the burnt part of a toast is carcinogenic. Please don't do it ! Marianna
ReplyDeleteBefore you go to bed, drink a glass of water with Cellfood (natural supplement) drops in it. The studies they have done on this are amazing!
ReplyDeleteTake a multivitamin before bed. I SWEAR this works better than anything I've ever tried. I forgot to do it recently, and when I woke up feeling iffy, I took it. It helped eventually, but it is much more effective when taken before bed. I try not to overindulge, but I live in France, and some nights we just have a lot of wine and champagne!
ReplyDeleteare you kidding me?? if these really work, i will owe you a big fat christmas present this year after all of my holiday parties are over!! let the bubbily flow!!
ReplyDeletei think im gonna try that one with the toast. i sometimes drink a glass of milk and then just eat somethink with salt in, that usually does the trick ;)
ReplyDeletecheck out my blog http://tvdummie.blogg.se :)
i am a toast addict when i'm hung over. before i go to bed and then before i go to work in the morning xxx
ReplyDeleteMy hairdresser swears that 1/2 liter of Pediasure at night before bed and 1/2 liter in the morning when you wake up makes you feel even BETTER than before you started drinking in the first place... Makes me want to have 1 too many cocktails, just so I can try it ;)
ReplyDeleteWhen my husband was studying in China in college, his host Dad decided to 'drink him under the table'. His host mom gave everyone green tea and pomelo. Worked like a charm! After a bachelorette party, my husband gave me green tea and some toast (not burnt)-there might have been some ibuprofen in there too--it worked great.
ReplyDeleteMy two cures are to never go to bed drunk. I always try to stay awake as long as possible. Then in the morning I have a Gatorade - works like a charm.
ReplyDeleteOh and sometimes there might be a burrito, pizza slice, or pot of Kraft Dinner eaten.
brunch at the plough+stars pub in cambridge ma: bloody mary, cheddar grits, bangers, wheat toast, mescalin side salad.
ReplyDeleteVitamin B complex after drinking and before going to bed, and a pu ehr tea with a baguette with iberico ham the morning after. Years of trial and error gave me the perfect solution.
ReplyDeleteo i like this movie too much . a great combination and nice to attract to such kind of reader.anyways. what you have paste on bread . a black coal is it? this slice can be name as coal black slice:)
ReplyDeleteI swear by eggs before bed/the next morning! Any type of breakfast sandwich or eggs/bread combo always does the trick for me! Breakfast foods can have crazy magical powers... Maybe that's why brunch is the best meal of the week :)
ReplyDeleteBurrito = majical drinking tool
ReplyDeleteHalf before bed. Half in the morning, still cold from the fridge. Also, iced coffee with honey.
