My darlings, the fall weather is getting cooler, and it's time to cuddle up and watch movies! Just for fun, here are my top ten just-for-fun movies, those movies you watch when you just want to chill. What are yours?Royal Tenenbaums
Annie Hall
Rosemary's Baby
When Harry Met Sally
Emma
Ghost World
Clueless
Harold & Maude
The Graduate
Bridget Jones Diary
(I also secretly like Knocked Up, which always seems to be on TV; how can you resist deep-voiced Seth Rogen?)
P.S. Mindy Kaling's funny article about romantic comedies, and more fun round-ups.

When Harry Met Sally!!! That's one of my all time favorites. Along with "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail." I always end up watching them when they come on tv even though I own them... Silly, I know!
ReplyDeleteI love old movies too- I could watch "An Affair to Remember" or "Breakfast at Tiffany's" or "Sabrina" a million times and never tire of them!
I love Practical Magic!
ReplyDeleteAh Love it. I also include Love Actually. I just went as Margot and Richie for Halloween with my husband. Photos here: www.cookslikeshetalks.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteSay Anything; LOVE LOVE!
ReplyDeleteI could watch John Cusak with that boombox up over his head playing Peter Gabriel a million times. My go-to flick!
My vote is for "When Harry Met Sally" too. I would always watch it with my brother and sister when we were home from college. By the way, I have a twin sister too. :) I have almost every line memorized. Remember when she hair sprays her hair in the car before they go in the restaurant...so hilarious.
ReplyDelete"The Graduate" is my pick :)
ReplyDeleteYou and I have such the same aesthetic. But you definitely need "Charade" on your list -- I totally adore that movie. Audrey Hepburn? Mancini soundtrack? Yes, please.
ReplyDeleteI always want to watch Notting Hill!
ReplyDeletesweet home Alabama or The notebook for romance.
ReplyDeleteCaddyshack, Meet the parents or the hangover for a laugh.

When Harry Met Sally and Legally Blonde are my go-to movies on lazy days. I need to see Rosemary's Baby, maybe tonight when the cold front hits!
ReplyDeleteI love it! One of my dearest friends and I have set our life goal to be to make it through the AFI top 100 list. We get together every few months on a sunday and pick out a classic to watch. I'm going to suggest some of these! One of our favorites was "Some Like it Hot."
ReplyDeleteBecca
Excellent choices Joanna! Mine are Annie Hall, The Royal Tennenbaums, Bridget Jones, Amelie, The Science of Sleep, and Love Actually.
ReplyDeleteNotting Hill. Amélie. Elizabeth. Volver. You've Got Mail. Eat Drink Man Woman. Love Actually. Amadeus. Anne of Green Gables. Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Love all these movies. I've always thought Rosemary's Baby was the scariest movie ever, especially that last scene!
ReplyDeleteI love the film version of Emma!! In fact all of Jane Austen's classics are movies I can watch over & over...including Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility and Persuasion!
ReplyDeleteMy two favorites both star Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks... I love You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle!
ReplyDeletethistle handmade
Legally Blonde and Romy and Michele's High School Reunion are my favorite just-for-fun movies. They're light-hearted and make it easier to relax after a stressful day.
ReplyDeleteFun picks! I love the Royal Tenenbaums, really any Wes Anderson film for that matter. Rushmore is perfect for fall movie-watching, I think.
ReplyDeleteI just cuddled up with a friend and watched Amélie the other day... Favorite of mine!
ReplyDeleteClueless, Sense and Sensibility and Kill Bill do it for me :)
ReplyDeleteThese are so good everyone. I need to bookmark this for when I need a bit of inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI agree with many others in that I can watch (and re-watch) Love Actually and The Notebook indefinitely.
Another two: Persuasion (BBC version) and Sliding Doors. Every year or so I rewatch these.

Jo, you should do a list of movies that are great for a good cry (if you do that sort of thing, because I do sometimes.)
Love the Graduate. I can always watch You've Got Mail, anything with Bill Murray, old flicks with Audrey Hepburn or Cary Grant, Chocolat, Pride and Prejudice, Sound of Music....
ReplyDeleteHere is a totally eclectic mix of some of my favorites:
ReplyDeleteAn Education
Home Alone
Serendipity
Amelie
Big Daddy
and Back to the Future!
I've always been the kind of person who would rather watch a movie I haven't seen before (even if it's not supposed to be great) than re-watch something. But I think that's changing and I'm starting to realize it's important to watch what makes me happy!
www.wearingitall.blogspot.com
I agree, Clueless always cheers me up. Also, That Thing You Do is a go to for me!

There's more shame in liking Clueless than Knocked Up! At least that movie got loads of good critic and VF said it revived american comedy.

ReplyDeleteWhen Harry Met Sally
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Working Girl
Star Wars (the original)
The Sure Thing
Anne of Green Gables (Megan Follows, not Anne Shirley)

Ohh I love Bridget Jones Diary. It's one of those great movies you want to watch over and over again:) Have a great Wednesday, Joanna.
ReplyDeleteoh wow I am LONG overdue for another viewing of Bridget Jone's Diary...and belting All By Myself in synchronization. that's not weird, right?
ReplyDeleteI watched Knocked Up just the other night - I chose it OVER Game 6 of the World Series, ha. Can't resist it when it's on TV. ReplyDeleteA Beautiful Mind, and the Princess Bride for some laughs. Ooh and Notting Hill. So good.
ReplyDelete"You've Got Mail" with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan just embodies coziness to me - oversize sweaters, golden retrievers, corner book shop and autumn in New York! What could be better?
ReplyDeleteWhat a great list! You are right about the weather.
ReplyDeleteAlso, thank you so much for re-mentioning Mindy Kaling's article "Flick Chicks"! It's so funny you mention the girl who works in the art gallery, because the book we are reading this month is a total guilty pleasure and the heroine works in an art gallery... shocker! hahaha

ReplyDeleteI could watch the scene from 2012 when John Cusack drives a limo through a crumbling LA over and over again.
Hitch and I Love You Man!!

I think a new favorite romantic comedy is Bridesmaids. Funny & romantic.
ReplyDeleteI've seen all of the ones you listed except Rosemary's Baby. Is it scary or just creepy??
ReplyDeleteA bunch of mine are on your list! When I want a comfort movie I usually go for a classic romantic comedy (like 'When Harry Met Sally') or an adaptation of a nineteenth-century novel (namely, Jane Austen novels onscreen).

ReplyDeleteGood taste in films, Jo! Harold & Maude, Ghost World and the Royal Tenenbaums are my favourites.
ReplyDeleteAn excellent documentary for autumn is 'It Might Get Loud', which features Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, The Edge from U2 and Jack White from the White Stripes. It goes through their guitar styles, what inspires them and music they grew up on. Excellent excellent movie, even for people who don't particularly care about those bands. VERY entertaining!
Wonderful list!

ReplyDeleteHarold and Maude is my absolute favorite! Total classic-- and I know there are people out there who love it too, but my friends and family are always horrified by it...so anyone who appreciates it's quirky adorableness gets major points in my book!
