We got the J. Crew holiday catalog in the mail last night, and I was struck (once again) by how the models' orange-red lipstick is so adorable. I'm not sure I could pull it off with my pale skin tone, but a Glamour editor found a similar lipstick--Heatwave--that she swears looks good on everyone. (Here's photographic proof!) Would you try it?P.S. Another similar color is Hot Coral.

i love it! i've tried it, but i find myself going back to my tried and true neutrals.
ReplyDeleteCheck out this hilarious blog post on MODG re: the Jcrew lipstick color.

That picture. Love.
ReplyDeletex Elizabeth / In BEtween Seams
do, even though it looks great on some people only.
ReplyDeleteI have recently started to embrace lipstick.. and colors like this still scare me! But it looks good on this girl. Maybe I will have to investigate this one!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, that girl looks so adorable! I think, I would give it a go for sure:) Happy Friday. xo
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't, but I also loved the look. Did you see those fair isle leggings? Love.
ReplyDeletei love to wow my verrrry conservative engineer co-workers (i do PR work for an engineering firm, so needless to say i'm the one-of-these-things-is-not-like-the-other) with mac's morange. oh, baby, it's BRIGHT.
ReplyDeletethey get a kick out of me, i know they do!
It actually does look good on all those girls in the Glamour offices-maybe it is universally flattering!
ReplyDeleteand those freckles are a-feakin-dorable :)
ReplyDeleteABSOLUTELY DO.
ReplyDeleteI love my orange lipstick and wear it regularly! I was nervous about it looking gross with my skin too at first, but now I'm hooked! It's chic and bold, but whimsically so. You know what I mean?
really pretty color! i would love to try it out. too bad i don't have cute freckles like the model though...
ReplyDeletei know, her freckles are adorable!
ReplyDeletedefinitely! it fact i might try get one tomorrow. getting a tad bored with red and fuschia!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try it out. My fave nail colour is very orangey. Just need to be brave enough for the lips now.
ReplyDeleteNice and pretty like the beginning of Kate Moss....
ReplyDeletehttp://www.younglington.blogspot.com
Orange red is fantastic! I think it looks so fresh, and can be oddly natural for the right coloring. (Like here, the model has great freckles and rosy cheeks.)
ReplyDeleteI won't front that I also thought the same thing, but then I bought the Poppy King for J. Crew reddish orange color and LOVE it. It isn't as deep, but it is a similar hue and it is so pretty. I say go for it!
ReplyDeletei swear by orange! specifically heat wave by nars, makes your teeth look super white, and your face super bright!
ReplyDeleteI believe that color would look good on the palest of skin tones.
ReplyDeleteI'm a pasty Brit and can confirm that this lipstick is awesome. Bought it after it was used in the J Crew catalogue last year! I'd say go for it!
ReplyDeleteHave to say - I really like the look of this colour.
ReplyDeleteIt a MUST-DO! I bought Chili by MAC. Its amazing. Best orange-red out there. 3 of my girlfriends bought it looks great on all of us.
ReplyDeleteYes I would try it...just saved it on my Amazon wish list from your link, in fact. :)
ReplyDeleteNow, if only I had the model's glorious freckles! Adorable!!
Just found the most perfect shade: Stiletto by Kat Von D. You can apply it lightly after chapstick for a barely there effect or layer it on thick for a bold pop. So fun and feminine all at the same time.
ReplyDeleteLive Inspired,
Heidi
athousandlaughingstarfish@blogspot.com
I love it!
ReplyDeletePretty especially with those gorgeous freckles!
ReplyDeletei love this shade! Personally i'm not sure of how well i pull it off but i wear it anyway, haha! I got a great color from revlon, its not fire and ice, its a little more orange but i love it.
ReplyDeleteit's a 'do' in my book.
ReplyDeletebut i'm a lipstick fanatic so almost every color is a 'do' in my book.
Yeah. No. Sorry. Not loving it. At all.
ReplyDeleteDo!! It would look great with your skintone! I love my Poppy lipstick from Laura Mercier. It's a great orangey/red with a bit of gloss! It does look more red on me but I love it.
ReplyDeletedo it! i don't believe in colors looking bad with skin tones. you could start with an orange gloss to try a softer shade.
ReplyDeletei love orange and coral lipstick.
I love this look. But unfortunately, orange isn't the best shade on yellow skin :O(
ReplyDeletehttp://www.thegirlieblog.com
i actually like the orange tint better than pink for myself. I would love to try this.
ReplyDeleteI actually did try it, but it didn't look like anything special on me - just a ho-hum coral, totally boring. I was so sad! Oh well, my husband picked out a shade that I thought looked totally naff (NARS' "fire down below)that turned out to be the perfect burgundy. I really want to believe there is an orange-red out there that looks this great on everyone (or, honestly, just one that will look this good on me would make me happy!), but so far I haven't found it...
ReplyDeleteI swear by Revlon lipstick. It's affordable and just as good (if not better) than my MAC lipsticks. I have two coral shades and love them. And I'm pale pale pale! Soo recommend fun lips. It makes you feel sexier.
ReplyDeleteI have poppy king and love it! The Glamour tip on how to apply this color is genius. It makes a huge difference on how it looks! Try it
ReplyDeleteI LOVE YOUR BLOG I LIKE THE COLOR OF THE LIPS!!KISSES FROM SPAIN
ReplyDeletehmm, what about brown girls, tan girls, etc.? i think that photo is hardly proof of this color being universally flattering.
ReplyDeletedefinitely pretty on the model though!
I second Vicky's vote for Mac's Chili. It's an amazing red/orange that adds a real 40s glamour to your look.
ReplyDeleteI love it!
ReplyDeletewell i like to wear Nars Schiap (that hot/neon pink) to work (at a museum) so i would totally give it a go! if anybody is nervous about the full-on lipstick, i have one of these tinted balms (hydratint, in crimson) from laura mercier, it's an orangy-red but more sheer. and it actually moisturizes well (unlike most "fancy" balms, which i buy for the cute packaging/pretty colors, and don't work-for me-).
ReplyDeleteI think this color is flattering on anyone with fair'ish skin. It looks so glamorous! JCrew was also carrying a red-orange color they claimed was striking on anyone (I think it was NARS?) but I'm not sure if they carry it any longer.
ReplyDeleteI know one of the colors they use is red squared. Jenny Lyons said in an interview. I use it as a lip pencil and love it!
ReplyDeleteDo! I have that translucent fair skin and the orange shade that I love is Revlon Coral Crush. If you apply it with a lip brush it's not quite so harsh.
ReplyDeleteYes! Even before I read thoe whole post I was going to suggest Heat Wave. It is brilliant, and really so flattering on my paler-than-pale and less-than-perfect skin, I totally believe that it would work on tons of different faces. You've got to try it. Seriously, I'm addicted, I can't rave enough about Heat Wave.
ReplyDeletehttp://nomadic-d.blogspot.com/
DO DO DO!
ReplyDelete(especially her. How cute are her freckles!?)
ABSOLUTE YES! Love it.
ReplyDeleteI have auburn hair and freckles and I rock the orangey-reds!!
i wear nars's Heat Wave, which is the color they used for the catalog (according to happenstance's blog) :)
ReplyDeleteDo! I love it!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Megan Joy. I have an affinity for the old school green tube Revlon lipsticks. My absolute favorite is Orange Flip. It is perfection (and i am very fair skinned). Do try it and report back! :)
ReplyDeleteOooh la laaa! I can't wait to try Heat Wave! Another orangey red that I recently discovered was Sephora's It Girl lipstick shade. It wears beautifully and is a great orangey red.
ReplyDeleteI'm also pretty positive it's Nars Heatwave, that's what I've read, and I LOVE IT. It's the only red shade I can wear - I too have very Anglo skin, thin and pale, but with yellowish undertones, so most reds look ghastly on me, but this - gorgeous! Well I think so at least:)
ReplyDeleteThe Blossom Shed Beauty Blog
I tend to avoid bright lipsticks, but I think that orange makes a wonderful layer to be toned down. When I got married, I wore orange liner and lipstick as a base, followed by neutral lipstick and gloss over it. It wound up looking like a warm peachy coral, which is perfect for my coloring whether or not it's in fashion.
ReplyDeleteLooks WONDERFUL on that exact skin time and hair color, but everyone else will look a bit goofy.
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding me?! You would look amazing in orange-red lipstick!
ReplyDeletethis girl is adorable with all her freckles! I say yes to this color lip!
ReplyDeleteI love this color!! I currently have a few different variations of this color! Very cute!

i usually wear tomato red lipstick in the fall when my tan has faded. my all time favorite is vincent longo lipstain in americano.
ReplyDeleteOh I love the colour!! Although I'm pretty pale too, so not too sure if it would suit. Lovin' the bold lip look though! I recently jumped on the red lipstick wagon, blogged about it here:
ReplyDeletehttp://aisforlove.blogspot.com/2011/10/ooh-la-la.html
Love your blog Jo!
Angie
http://aisforlove.blogspot.com
I read about that color before, I think that's what J. Crew used or currently used in their shoots.
ReplyDeletethis model is quite a beauty and looks fab in it!
ReplyDeleteSo funny how the idea of a "universally-flattering" lipcolor is so relative! To someone with fair skin, the Glamour photo shows a wide array of skintones, but for those of us who are much darker, all the girls look pretty much the same! I LOVE your blog; this is not a critique; just saying. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat's a pretty lip color. I've been seeing that model above (Cintia Dicker) quite often this Fall. She's in the Aerie and American Eagle ads. I'm pretty sure she makes anything look good.
ReplyDeletemonica, that is HILARIOUS! and jhan, i agree, that model is g-orrrrr-geous.
ReplyDeletedanni, that's a really good point, i figured it was at least a pretty good sampling of girls, but you're right, *definitely* not nearly universal. thank you!!
ReplyDeleteI got my J.Crew catalog, too! I don't think it's 'orange' It's more in between red and orange. I tried to recreate the look with Revlon's 'I love That Red' lipstick :)
ReplyDeletehttp://confessionsofaturkishgirl.blogspot.com/
I do and I love it! I have Nars Heat Wave. Discovered it from the last J.Crew catalog actually. Have a great weekend:)
ReplyDeletei love your blog. your style is great. would love it if youd check out mine and follow me back if you like! It also features my recently launched scarf line "Charlotte & Lisa". i think its suiting to your vibe.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.clothesovercarbs.blogspot.com/
I look good in orangey-red colours, so I count myself lucky. Pumpkin-y colours, too! That lipstick is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteyou know you have to give Josie Maran lip stains a try. I am very reluctant about trying anything lip stain because of them always being too dark. Well not that josie maran ones, they were very gentle and light. Found them at Sephora
ReplyDeleteOnly one of the biggest do's ever! It looks amazing on virtually anyone!
ReplyDeleteHeatwave by Nars is totally do-able. I love the idea of this color, MAC Morange is also a good option. It's an out of the box option to regular old red! Happy Holiday color for sure!
ReplyDeleteI always think that red or orange lipsticks make my lips look too big. I kind of like to give more emphasis on my eyes area and just some light gloss on my lips.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love Heatwave, but I don't wear bold lipstick regularly because I'm constantly having to reapply!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a DO! Many shades for many skin tones! Heat Wave is gorgeous! I think I may need to have it...
ReplyDeleteI have the Nars lipstick, and I love it. It is more matte and vibrant than what is in the Jcrew shoot, thought. I think Channel Rebelle is the perfect match for the Jcrew look -- sheer, orange/red with a little coral.
ReplyDeleteThis is so adorable. I've tried Mac's Morange before. It looks best on me when I have a little color on my cheeks.
ReplyDeletecharliestella.blogspot.com
This is definitely a more daring color, but you should try it out! I think that this color will look great on tan or pale skin. The model in the image above has pretty pale skin and it looks great on her! I say go for it!
ReplyDeletewww.qacreate.com
Do! I currently really love this color.
ReplyDeleteI'm a pale one too. I'm not sure I'm brave enough for this. I see a lot of elderly women come into the store I work at, and a ton of them have incredible fashion. Most of the time I'm simply in awe of their lipstick colors, even if they're not wearing a very extravagant outfit, their lipstick is always marvelous and perfect. I've seen this color on quite a few!
ReplyDeleteYes yes yes! Although, I'm not wearing a lipstick most of the times, a deep, orange one would certainly intrigue me to.
ReplyDeletej'adore!!! très chic, très frais!!!
ReplyDeletethat model has the most gorgeous skin/freckles!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely, do!! I have the Nars Heatwave lipstick and I use it all the time. I have a very similar complexion as you, I'm a pale skinned light brunette, and I think it looks just great with a simple eye makeup. I get lots of compliments and it instantly puts me in a great mood. These kind of colors are great to brighten up a dark winter day.
ReplyDeleteActually, Heatwave is the first lipstick that I think I will finish, and will have to buy another bar. Instead of languishing in a drawer with all my other red lipsticks, as they usually do.
i think heatwave is the color they use in the j.crew catalogue. i recall last year there was a blurb about it in the holiday one. its my favorite bars color, i always go back to it, i think it looks especially nice on pale skinned ladies!
ReplyDeleteI discovered J.Crew thanks to you and other American blogs but there are no shops in Paris. HOWEVER there's a shop opening in London next month so I'm looking fwrd going over there and discovering in flesh! xx
ReplyDeleteI love MAC's So Chaude. It's the perfect opaque red orange when you apply it straight from the tube or with a lip brush, but you can also dab it on lightly for a kiss of poppy color!
ReplyDeleteI love HeatWave! Just wore it out on the town last night!
ReplyDeletexxdaily.weakly
http://dailyweakly.blogspot.com/
definitely! I love it
ReplyDeleteI rarely wear lipstick, but I've been dying to try out some reds (like the one shown) for a few months now! I just don't really know how or where to start. Any tips?!
ReplyDeleteI love that color. That picture makes me want freckles!
ReplyDeleteI think it's so pretty, and I've tried to wear it a couple of times, but I think I have a way too big mouth and very full lips, so it doesn't work for me. It looks like I only have a mouth in the face, that's all you can see... I'm sticking with lip color and maybe some pink...
ReplyDeletei think it's must do! one of these rare lipstick colors where there is a shade to suit every skin color! -JB.
ReplyDeletehttp://madewithlovebyjackieb.blogspot.com/
I love it, I've tried it and... I looked like a clown. So sad...
ReplyDeleteLooks gorgeous on the model! I'd give it a spin! The only problem is, lip color tends to fade out or come off after about an hour on me. I can do glosses because they don't really cake up after reapplying, but I feel like lipstick does. This is so pretty, though!
ReplyDeleteto me the orange-red lipstick concept seems to always look great on the runway and in magazines, but it would definitely be a risk to try it out as an everyday look!
ReplyDeletei'm really starting to love it! might need to try it out ...
ReplyDeleteMy friends and I spent over an hour last night gathered around the J.Crew catalog. Too many pretty things!
ReplyDeleteDid you HONESTLY delete my comment and then change the text from "British skin tone" to "pale skin tone" pursuant to that very comment?! Incredible.
ReplyDeleteLove it . Always wanted to try orange too I'd been afraid as well but I'm going to go for it now :)
ReplyDeletepinklemonincrystal.blogspot.com
Thanks Jo! Have been on the hunt for an orangey red just like this one..might just take the plunge
ReplyDeleteI know that theres an orange lipstick made by j crew thats the same one they use in the catalogues. apparently its really sheer so you can have it as light or dark as you want :)
ReplyDeletei tried it at sephora today and even though i don't usually wear lipstick, it looked really fun and flattering. not something i'd wear to the office, but definitely fun for a night out. i went for it!
ReplyDeleteI've been using this orangish color from ELF that was so insanely cheap, like a dollar and I to pit with a chanel Stellar lipstick. I loveeee it.
ReplyDeleteVery nice picture!
ReplyDeletehttp://thestyleattitude.blogspot.com
I love my orange lipstick! It makes me feel sexy, feminine, and fun!
ReplyDeletehttp://leeyaengel.blogspot.com/2010/09/crazy-orange-lipstick.html
I would absolutely try this! I love getting adventurous with lipstick. It's such a simple way to completely freshen up a look
ReplyDeleteoooo. i am going to try this. have wanted a coral shade for for-ever.
ReplyDeleteI wear "Orange Flip" by Revlon ALL the time. It's perfect & inexpensive. I've tried orange/reds by NARS, Make Up Forever, & Dior but this cheapy Revlon is by far the best. Try it out!!!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=36079&catid=183590&cmbProdBrandFilter=5008&aid=337953&aparam=revlon_moon_drops_crem&CAWELAID=224232025
Heatwave is amaaaazing! I recently started playing with lipstick and my NARS girl told me just to have some fun with this color. I put it on and couldn't believe how flattering it was, especially considering my teeth are not completely pearly white. Needless to say, I bought it immediately after.
ReplyDeletewhat's a cheap alternative to the NAIL color they are showing in JCrew catalog? thanks!
ReplyDeleteI am twenty, and have always been afraid of looking "too young" to wear lipstick. However, the orangey red j.crew goodness changed my mind. I got the Revlon and I've been wearing it all week! Endless compliments. It's wintery and matte and fun. I'm extremely pale with dark hair, which has always made lipstick hit or miss, but you should definitely try it :)
ReplyDeleteI say it's a do - love this look!
ReplyDeletelast year jcrew was my whole winter inspiration... I found "lady danger" at mac. the name kinda got me too!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very pretty color, a definite do! And, isn't she so beautiful with all those freckles!
ReplyDeleteAs a freckle face myself, I can say I love this look and have definitely adopted it in my daily look.
ReplyDeletehttp://prettygrittynyc.blogspot.com/
Of course it looks fab on her!
ReplyDeleteDO! Definitely do!
ReplyDeleteI'm very very pale, and I love my Limecrime My Beautiful Rocket lipstick. It's very orange. My belief that lipstick only looks good if you believe you can pull it off. If you doubt it, then it won't look good. Give it a go :)
ReplyDeleteJust bought the Revlon Hot Coral today after reading your post.... LOVE IT and am wearing it HERE.....
ReplyDeletehttp://www.theblueridgegal.com/2011/11/lip-lovers-unite.html
I tried orange make-up for a web series and it surprisingly looked great! I'm interested in adding it to my [small but slowly expanding] collection of make-up. :)
ReplyDeleteI have been absolutely DYING for a perfect orangey-red lipstick. I may have to pick up the Nars Heatwave. I love their Pure Matte line, and I have pale pale pale skin.
ReplyDeleteFollow up post....dark burgundy? I love a bold lip, but exactly how goth am I going to flippin look in that?
Love how that colour looks! I myself have become big into red lipsticks in the past 6 months or so & have converted many friends who thought they couldn't pull it off! I have been toying with the idea of orange lipstick...perhaps I should be brave and give it a try! :)

I love it! I definitely do not use it as an everyday look but love it with black and silky things and leopard print things!
ReplyDeleteLOVE heatwave! I also love the Nars gloss 'wonder'- another great orangey coral!
ReplyDeleteJ.Crew has the most amazing lipstick! it's by Poppy King and it looks good on everyone. I'm NOT lying. Also, the way it goes on your lips is amazing, the way it layers is so perfect for just a light, matte-ish color or you could put on more for a serious pop of color. Just try it, what's the worst that could happen? You end up loving it?
ReplyDeleteYour blog is very informative. This is obviously one great post.i keep on reading articles from here.thanks for sharing.. utah security systems
ReplyDeleteWell..its informative post. I tried it on myself and its worked great for me. Yes I love my orange lipstick. Its suiting on me.
ReplyDeleteI look stunning in Heatwave. It is my favorite lipstick. Not sure everyone would look great in this.
