Tomboy sexiness

We've talked about dresses and skirts, but I think the sexiest look is actually tomboy style. You feel comfortable and look beautiful, and you can can run around, be goofy and have a good time (without getting blisters from your heels!). What do you think? Doesn't Natalie Portman look gorgeous? (Even prettier than when she's dressed up, I think.)

A similar outfit: Gap shirt, $59.95; J. Crew sweater, $79.50; Lucky Brand jeans, $99; Burt's Bees lip balm, $2.

It works for Natalie, and it works for some, but I don't think it would work for me. Not even for a nanosecond. Sigh.

  12. tomboy is my default style. probably don't look as lovely as ms portman tho'...

  13. I absolutely adore tomboy and menswear styles. I also love when a lady rocks a pixie cut, but I feel you have to be quite thin and have a tomboy kind of figure to really pull it off.

  20. Thank you for posting this. I just got my hair cut off like this and I feel awesome but so many people think you can't be feminine with short hair.

  21. Comfort is the absolute best path to being gorgeous... tomboy or otherwise. No kidding. And the fact that Natalie Portman is witty, funny, and talented makes her that much more gorgeous.

  22. i agree! and it's true... you take yourself less serious and can really just have fun in a tomboy look! ps: she could probably wear a paperbag and look perfect!

  24. I chopped my hair to a pixie over a year ago and haven't look back since. I've never felt more confident and powerful and sexy in my entire life. I finally look in the mirror and see me instead of someone elses version of me. Added bonus? I can also cut my own hair now... leaves more dollars for the tomboy clothing fund.

  29. This is definitely a great look only for people with a certain body type.

  30. I love, love, love Tomboy style too. I don’t think that I rock it as well as others - I agree that it's best if you are slim, and not too buxom. But I adore it just the same. BTW Canvas has awesome men's Oxford shirts that I snap up on sale for less than $20. They are a waredrobe basic for me in my Tomboy style. Shoes - Frye James Oxford!

  31. Joanna, your posts are especially amazing today! You're reading my mind. Jeans, sneakers, a grandpa sweater and horn-rimmed glasses is the cutest outfit. And Natatlie Portman is my fave style icon (Jay-Z is rather stylish too!) Thank you!

This style is great, but it only suits a few. You have to be quite thin or you will look quite butch, imo.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Absolutely! I love the tomboy chic style and am guilty of rockin' the look myself (with an occasional flowy frock now and again)

  40. I agree with most everyone. I love this look and think (if done well)it looks amazing. There's something insouciant and playful about it that makes it alluring. Of course, being a delicate beauty like Natalie doesn't hurt either.

@Beckie@Cubicle57 : I just pixie-d my hair a few months ago too and love it! I feel like I'm leading with my face--it's empowering!

    My tomboy shoe of choice--brogues.

i dunno about this one. i think you either have to be one of the lucky ones (like portman) who possesses a beautiful and, most important, extremely feminine face to pull this look off without coming across as, well, a bit butch OR at least be careful enough with the styling of it to still show off your feminine curves.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm only just embracing my inner tomboy and yes, I'm amazed by how sexy it makes me feel!

Definitely the best possible way to look beautiful and feel comfortable in the meantime! My favourite without doubts.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Lauren B, Audrey H, natalie all rocked/rock this look but all were in proud possession of killer cheekbones and outrageous beauty - helped to combine tomboyishness with sexiness, no? Having said that i love jeans, converse trainers, biker boots, tweed and waistcoats, cheekbones or not!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I couldn't agree more! It also displays confidence, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  47. It's definitely comfy and great for running around and doing errands, but I don't feel sexy dressed that way. I actually feel uncomfortable and not put together that way. I don't think it's a style that really suits everyone. To be honest, I just think she looks like a little boy there--gorgeous face, but kind of scruffy. I'm much more attracted to a feminine and even retro look. Very classically sexy and beautiful. But everyone has different preferences--it's all about what you feel best in!

  48. N. Portman is gorgeous. Seriously.

I like tomboyish clothing/shoes quite a bit but I have to wear them with pretty hair/makeup in order to feel girly enough.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I totally agree Joanna - tomboy = sexy! (I hope so anyway because it's the only look I can pull off ...)

  50. ♥ Tomboy chic is my thing. Finally a post I can truly relate to! I couldn't agree more Joanna...it's the bomb diggidy!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I love her with shorter hair. Now, most women I know couldn't pull this off. Also, while there are SOME guys out there who love this (and I love them for it) most guys I know wouldn't like this. Too boyish. If her hair was long and thrown back in a pony tail, totally different story.

    ReplyDelete
  52. She is beautiful! I have short hair and i feel great! I like to dress up sometimes, but my jeans and a simple t-shirt are really what i will always love! :D Comfortable!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I think that it helps if you are naturally gorgeous, like Natalie. I don't feel like tomboy style works for me, and it definitely doesn't make me feel sexy. I feel sexiest in what I call my sexy secretary look, which involves a silk blouse, high-waisted pencil skirt, and pumps, preferably with red nails and lips. It's professional and covered up, but with a bit of an edge to it, which to me feels sexy.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Natalie looks good in anything.

I love the androgynous look. Wool, leather, plaid, paisley, metals, cotton, loafers, etc. Looking forward to all of the he-she trends that the fall brings!

  55. Some women can really pull it off!

    ReplyDelete
  56. totally agree! Tomboy style is a major part of my style. It is a way of life or maybe even an attitude. Even when I dress more feminine, I am still a tomboy and it makes me feel confident. :)

  57. I agree with you that tomboy style is super cute, and easy because it's low maintenance, but it's always fun to get dolled up every once in a while :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. I feel like really petite girls are the ones who make this look sexiest. I'm 5'10'' and have a tall girl's frame, and I find that it's harder to make it look 'sexy'...maybe that's all in my head?

    ReplyDelete
  59. I love tomboy styles. My 4 year old may disagree, but I think it's adorable and functional. So what if I'm not a "fancy lady"? Though that can be fun sometimes, too...

  64. I agree! I love the tomboy look. I think it's wonderful to be feminine and dressy like a woman should be....but I think being a woman is all about being comfortable and feeling good. And that's what the tomboy style does in a nutshell.
So beautiful in an odd way.

I think Natalie looks stunning here, too! Just as stunning as she looks at the premieres!

  65. yep. that's why I like jennifer aniston's look - kind of tomboy
ultimately jen seems to be a femme,
    but not a frilly femme.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think what makes her still feminine is her make up. Perfectly executed. It's there but not there. I wish I could pull off that look. Unfortunately I've always had curves so I look odd. Like I'm dressed in reverse drag. But I loove the look.

    ReplyDelete
  67. So yes, tomboy scruffiness works for Natalie Portman. But then so did Naboo head-dresses and face paint. I mean, she IS Natalie Portman ;)

  70. While the tomboy look is hot, Natalie Portman is an unfair example.

She's Natalie Portman! If she wore a beekeepers outfit, I would say the beekeepers uniform is crazy chic!

  75. Her clothing doesn't seem particularly tomboy-ish to me, but rather just casual. I think you might be associating her short hair with a tomboy look, rather than the clothing she is wearing.

Cute, yes. Sexy, as in appealing to the opposite sex? An emphatic NO. (Sorry ladies.) There's a reason you don't see short hair and no makeup in men's magazines. We don't like it.

  80. Love the look, but I just about choked when you listed the prices you thought would re-create it. Um, how about hitting up a local secondhand shop (known more commonly in my upstate area as "thift stores")? I can get jeans for $7.99, tops for $5.99... et cetera. And that's -before- sales if I hit them on the right day.

I will never understand people's fascination with paying $100 for a pair of jeans...
