Every child I know has an joyous reaction to Elmo. My friend's baby's first word was "Elmo." Toby's all-time favorite book stars Elmo. My friend's two-year-old once sat in his stroller and just gazed at an Elmo cake in a bakery window. It's fascinating to see what a rock star (and best friend) Elmo is to children.Being Elmo is a new, award-winning documentary about the puppeteer who created Elmo. The trailer made me tear up; "I knew that Elmo should represent love," Clash said.
Will you see it? Do your little ones adore Elmo, too?

So sweet! Elmo was so great for little kids!
ReplyDeletewow!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see this movie. Sesame Street and Elmo have done amazing things for kids in the last few decades, and I'm thrilled to get a glimpse at the man behind the muppet.
ReplyDeleteMy baby girl had an Elmo doll that made her giggle, but our cat peed on it, so Elmo's gone. :( Looking for the perfect Elmo doll now.
ReplyDeleteThis looks fantastic!

My best friend's baby is embarking on his terrible twos. Whenever I'm with them and I can tell she needs to catch a break all I have to do is sing "la la la la, la la la la Elmo's World" and his attention is immediately turned towards me.
ReplyDeleteI love how you described Elmo as a rockstar and best friend... spot on.
haha, anne, that's so funny. we have the elmo doll that sings the alphabet. elmo giggles at the end, it's so charming :)
ReplyDeleteI saw Kevin Clash (and Elmo) at the National Book Fair in 2006 and he was mesmerizing! The children in the audience had so many questions for him. He was so great with the adults and the kids. Can't wait to see this!
ReplyDeletei just sent this to my mom. i adored sesame street as a child and i just started crying when i watched this. can't wait to see it!!
ReplyDeleteWhen we were NYC last week we went to a brilliant exhibition at MOMI of Jim Henson and all of his wonderful creations...def worth checking out!

:)
how sweet!
ReplyDeleteWe also love elmo- So funny that I never thought I'd say that! I once dropped off my husband and little son so they could catch Elmo and Clash live on a cold dark night. There was no parking for miles around so I just drove until I could park and waited for them to call me to come back to get them. We'll certainly be seeing this!
ReplyDeleteThere is something about Elmo I totally adore as well. I will definitely check it out:) Happy Monday, Joanna.
ReplyDeleteThat made me tear up too! It's incredible how such simple ideas can catch on and take the world over, such as a sweet character like Elmo. Who doesn't love Elmo?? def going to see that when it comes out.
ReplyDeleteI saw this documentary at the Dallas Film Festival last Spring. It was more wonderful than I thought it would be - Such an inspirational film. Whoever sees it will LOVE it.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh. So sweet. I am excited about this too! Mila is obsessed, in fact we just finished watching "A Song About Elmo" on Youtube (stars Adam Sandler). It's pretty cute...and no matter what mood Mila is in, she is just all smiles once she sees Elmo. He is like magic.

You always share things that make my day. I love the passion and determination the Kevin had as a young boy. That was my take away from the trailer. Thanks for letting me share the many cool things that you find. It makes me look very informed.
ReplyDeleteMy only question: Why has it taken so long for a Elmo-centric documentary? :)
ReplyDeletei only wish it was coming to my town... hopefully they'll add a date!
Thanks for sharing...

My brother, who never ever EVER cries, saw this at the Aspen Film Festival earlier this year, and said it made him get all teary eyed :) He also said that even people who aren't parents will enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh i can't wait :)
ReplyDeleteThis totally tore me up. My Father had the pleasure of working with Kevin Clash on a tv shoot and he came home raving about what a sweet and talented person Clash was and how much joy was in the room when he/Elmo interacted with children. Maybe we'll go to see this together ;)
ReplyDeleteI haven't always been the biggest Elmo fan (might have to do with the annoying toy my much younger siblings had) but this looks really heartwarming! I'd see it. :)
ReplyDeleteAwww Elmo really is a sweet character. Even if I want to throw the electronic Elmo toy my daughter plays with because she hits the button repeatedly.

this warms my heart. and wow, so amazing to see some of that fight to make it, that journey to make this dream a reality. so inspiring!! xo.
ReplyDeleteI ADORE Kevin Clash. I saw an interview with him many years ago and was taken with how down-to-earth, funny, well-spoken, and just awesome a guy he seemed. I remember emailing all of my friends being like "did you know the voice of Elmo is like, a really cool dude who you'd want to be friends with?" haha I totally became a fan of his! Can't wait to see this.

ReplyDeleteElmo: Not Just For Leetle Kids.
ReplyDeleteI lurve Elmo!
I saw this at the Toronto Hot Docs festival, and it made me cry! Totally see it if you get a chance...there is also a really interesting documentary about how they introduce Sesame Street into different countries - called The World According to Sesame Street - that is a fascinating look into the different cultural considerations....
ReplyDeleteThis made my heart swell! I'm definitely seeing it :)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see this documentary! It looks very inspiring!

we don't even have sesame street here in england and my 3 year old has an elmo app on my phone that he LOVES! what is it about elmo??? (but i love him too, he is so sweet and cheeky)
ReplyDeleteMy kids like elmo but aren't crazy about him like some kids are. A company I formerly worked for produced a video with Sesame Workshop that starred Elmo - it was about pediatric cancer. It was to help kids with cancer understand the process. A sad story but Elmo helped make it a little light-hearted.
ReplyDeleteThat's such a lovely thing to watch, Elmo has helped so many children and is truly inspirational!
ReplyDeletesaw the trailer on daddytypes and can't wait to see the movie. i've been obsessed with puppets and marionettes lately! oh, and leon loves elmo, too!
ReplyDeleteOh I can't wait to see! My almost 6 yr old still loves Elmo. Heck I still love Elmo! I've never understood the non-Elmo love; he's brought such fun into my kiddo's viewing world!
ReplyDeleteI just checked the schedule and the film is coming to the Seattle area in early November, so I'll definitely watch it. The trailer made me tear up. I LOVE ELMO!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this, I cant wait to see it. I recently saw a JIm Henson retrospective at the Museum of Moving Images in Astoria. You should check it out.
ReplyDeleteWhile working at the daycare when I was in high school, Elmo was the only thing to calm all the 2 year olds down at times. He was our lifesaver.

I absolutely adored Elmo as a little girl - and this trailer gave me goosebumps!
ReplyDelete"when a puppet is good and true and meanigful it's the soul of the pupputeer your seeing"
talk about a Feel Good Movie! I have to be so careful when I watch documentaries before bed because they can make so anxious (like ones about the economy or wallstreet or unjustice. I'm so filled with stress about the world that I can't sleep).
The only reason that this would keep me from sleeping is inspiration!
My son is just a little bit to young to love Elmo yet...but I definitely want to see this! So cute!
ReplyDeleteElmo was my FAVORITE when I was little! He still makes me smile. I want to see this film!
ReplyDeleteWe actually don't really let our son watch Sesame Street. My husband and I just don't like it and the couple times we have let our son watch it, he seems more scared than interested in the show.
ReplyDeleteMy son is just a little bit to young to love Elmo yet...but I definitely want to see this! So cute!
ReplyDeletethank you for sharing! i have to see this! my daughter loves elmo too, who doesnt! :)
ReplyDeleteThis looks awesome. I'll definitely check this out.

Baguette loves Elmo, and it's based entirely on the stuffed animal. This weekend we watched Sesame Street for the first time, and while my own favorite of Grover was okay for a minute or so, it provided only a brief pause between requests of "Elmo? Elmo?"
ReplyDeleteThis was so sweet. I'm not sure why it just made me cry but I can't wait to see it. :)
ReplyDeleteThats rad. Can't wait...
ReplyDeleteI saw this documentary at the NZ Film festival and I straight away came home and told everyone to GO SEE IT when they have the chance. it's so good and full of joy and such a testament to doing what you love and sharing the love. Clash is one amazing guy.
ReplyDeleteDying to see this! Elmo is my absolute favorite -- there's no one sweeter! ;-)

I LOVE that your friend's baby's first word was Elmo. So adorable. Yes, yes. I must see this! :)
ReplyDeletei introduced the german little boy i au pair to elmo. he digs him. a lot. but i must say, elmo's always talking in third person makes him come off a wee bit douche-y.
ReplyDeletebut, i'll always love that little red ball o fuzz.
xoxo
aw my little guy loves elmo. what is about elmo? he is just so nice. and fun!
ReplyDeleteI liked how you said in an earlier post that elmo is like the little kid superstar. so true.
Lindsay
Lucia is OBSESSED. She sees Elmo and she just starts to laugh and smile. lately though she has a major thing for Big Bird. Obsessed.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet post. I missed out on Elmo Mania myself (I was a Grover fan), but my sister was absolutely enamored with him as a toddler.
ReplyDeleteand i can't WAIT for that movie.
ReplyDeleteI don't have babies but I'll definitely watch it :D

My son is in love with Elmo, at only 8 months. We discovered this when we showed him a Sesame Street book with Elmo on the cover, and he got the hugest grin on his face. He flipped through it, but was only interested in the pages with Elmo, not Big Bird or Grover. I chalked it up to him liking red things, but he doesn't always do that to just ANY red thing.
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to see this. It is crazy how much little kids love Elmo. My oldest loved loved him and now my 14 month is gaining interest. It is fascinating. (This guys should be a billionaire for creating Elmo!)
ReplyDeleteNow I really need to see this, it looks so touching!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this Jo! :-)

ReplyDeleteSo adorable! When my brother, sister, and I were little we loved Burt and Ernie :) My brother could never remember their names and so he called them "those two guys who are friends"...haha

My 4 month old daughter laughed for the first time when my husband showed her an Elmo doll. Of course, we bought it for her, and it is now her very favorite. She amazingly also loves to watch Elmo, and I can always extend the hated Tummy Time a bit by showing her Elmo videos while she lies there. He's magical.
ReplyDeleteHA! interesting. I just met a puppeteer this past weekend. Michael Earl. He worked in The Muppet Movie and was Mr.Snuffleupagus in Sesame Street and he talked about Mr. Elmo ...lol...Great Post
ReplyDeleteI will most definitely see it. What a sweet, sweet story. And I just love Elmo! ha :)
ReplyDeleteone of the first things i did with my two-year-old this morning was start singing, "this is a song about elmo. elmo, elmo, elmo." (the adam sandler version—we recommend it). i'm guessing that means we're fans...
ReplyDeleteso so excited to see this!!
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazing! I am ordering right now!
ReplyDeleteI love how the little kids love and talk to Elmo as if he were real in spite of him being attached to the puppeteers arm. So lovely.
ReplyDeletethis is amazing!!!
ReplyDeletethank you for introducing this:)
xx
Elmo is amazing... my kids saw sesame street alive over the weekend.. it was fantastic!
ReplyDeleteWe were saw the release of 'Being Elmo' (or MoMo as my 2 yr old calls him) at the Sundance Film Festival. What a GREAT show and story Kevin has to tell.
ReplyDeleteGet in touch with the ELMO team to see it at a theater near you. check out: www.beingelmo.com for details! NYCers see you this OCTOBER 21 at the IFC Center.

ReplyDeleteI cried watching the trailer...I've loved Elmo eversince I was a kid and still loving that adorable loving red monster.
ReplyDeleteBeing able to see the man behind the love of Elmo is so amazing..can't wait to see the movie :)
SO cute! I love Sesame Street, and although Elmo wasn't my fave (Big Bird), I still had a special place for him in my heart.
ReplyDeleteOh I am so seeing this. In 2001 (I think) I was working at the Children's Hospital at Westmead (Sydney, Australia - still do) when Elmo and his friend made a visit. The children were drawn not just to the puppet, but to this amazing man. He created such happiness for what was some very sick children (and some sadly not here). His talent is so much more then just a red puppet with a funny vice. Will put this onto my must-see list.
ReplyDeletei really would like to see this! he's very talented.
ReplyDeleteWow!! I can't wait to see this!
ReplyDeleteSo sweet, totally on my doc list now!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see this! I've heard so many great things about this inspiring film!
ReplyDeleteElmo is the best, thanks for that post Joanna! It makes my boring day much better!

I was lucky enough to meet Elmo whilst working for kids tv. When Kevin asked if I wanted just Elmo in the photo or both of them I of course said both. Kevin Clash is such a legendary puppeteer/muppeteer! I couldn't stop telling friends that it was possibly the greatest day of my life! :-)
