Do you have a dog?

Do you have a dog? Alex wants one badly. Alas, our current apartment is way too small, but Alex literally can't pass a dog on the street without saying, "Doggggggeeee! Doggggeeee! Oh, you're a dog, you're just a dog!" It's like a tic.

My friend Lina and I always say it would be funny to name your dog a very human name—like Kevin or Brad, or Jennifer or Kristen. For some reason, that really makes me laugh.

Do you have a dog? What's its name?

We do have a dog! He name is Coney but she goes by Coney Bananas. She is a smaller Engligh Bulldog. She is the best thing in the world. But I will have to say, we lived in NYC (in four different apartments) and it was very difficult for me to have a pup there. I worked long hours, she has trouble with the stairs, etc. Now that we live in a little house in Ohio it is much easier. But I am lazy so this might not be true for everyone with a pup in NYC.

I have the same tick as your husband, i make us cross streets to pet other people's pups. my boyfriend and i are of the same mind that we would name him a totally human name. our favorite name so far, Herry. AH! it's Harry, but with an E. haha.

I have a dog, and she is a Cockapoo (also, am I the only one who can't help but giggle at that breed name :P ) and her name is Stella Blu. She is named after the Grateful Dead song, and not the Tennessee Williams play. I think she is a very nice lady!

My husband has never lived without a dog for more than a few months at a time, so getting married and not being able to afford one has been a rough transition for him. Someday we'll get one, but we want to make sure that some of other (credit) debt is paid off first and that we have a bigger place for it live. It's hard not having a furry companion though! Our place feels so quiet sometimes.

I never thought I would want a dog until my husband started graduate school and had class every night. I was super lonely, so we got Desmond (a shih tzu poodle) last Christmas and he is a dream.

Plus, it gives you a great reason to have to go on walks in the winter. :)

She's only 10 weeks old and I'm constantly thinking, "I dont know if I could do this with a human"... if you can raise a child I'm sure a pup is a cake walk. :)Just make sure you get your pup into some kind of training early- otherwise they will run your life. We have a dog! She's an Australian Shepherd (Sunday) and about 35 lbs. We were a little nervous about (small) apartment living with her, but she's great with it - lots of energy outside, but sleeps/cuddles inside.

I will say that the hardest thing for us is being limited to apartment choice. Our current building is dog friendly, but it really limits the search. Still, I wouldn't trade her for the world! Also, I really enjoy having a dog in the city. It's so much more fun (to me) to take her out on long walks than just to let her out into a backyard or something.

I have a fawn pug named Hubert. I always wanted a fat dog that I could dress up with a top hat and monocle. A black bow tie and cummerbund. You know, like what you imagine when you think "Hubert". I actually wrote a post today about this very subject. :)

Funny story: We were standing in line at this burger place to order and we were with our friend Harry. Then, we see this little puppy behind us who wants to jump all over us. The owner yells, "Harry! Sit!" and immediately our friend Harry is confused. The puppy's name was Harry, too. So cute!

We have a pup dog! His name is Rupert and he is a peekapoo (pekingese/poodle). We are also huge fans of "dogs with people names" and Rupert just hit our funny bone. We live in NYC, but I have to say, this city is great for small breeds like him. It can be really accommodating to dog lovers and there are so many parks and fun situations for them to experience. I think, socialized early and in the right way, the city can make a really outgoing and adaptable dog.

I am amazed at how well they do with the kids. We have a two year old at home and the chocolate lab will follow him everywhere but if a stranger should approach he becomes fiercely protective. If Jake doesn't know you, you will not be able to pick up the baby. I'd be curios to know how the baby feels about dogs when he is all grown up - did it impact him? Will he be a dog lover for life?

I finally convinced my husband that we needed a dog last December. We rescued a Jack Russell Terrier mix who is about 2 and we are so glad we did. We took a long time deciding about the dog and her name was already Rosie when we found her. She's pretty great. I like her name, although I prefer non-people names for animals. I really wanted to name a dog after some font or typography term since my husband and I are both graphic designers, but Rosie fits us pretty well anyway. :)

We have a 3 yr. old Australian Red Border Collie (we think… if you Google image search that type of dog, he looks exactly like them) named Owen. He came with that name from the rescue organization that we adopted him through. In the beginning we were considered “Fosters with the intent to adopt” since he came straight from a shelter in OH. Of course, we fell in love with him the instant we met him! Since we were “fosters…” every vet record need to be in that name so we decided to just keep it. And, he seemed to like it too because it took absolutely no time (I’m talking 5 minutes max) for him to learn it. Growing up my family had dogs named the following: Samson, Lucky (my dad said that she was “lucky” that he was letting her stay), Bailey, and Indy.

I have a dog in Manhattan and it depends on the bred. Some dogs are lazy and apartment dogs- it really can work without 'harming' the dog and keeping him/her happy. There's dog runs all around the city, plus central park, etc. He's a mix, adopted and his name is Frank.

I also agree a human name for a dog is great. My sister, for years, has been saying she wants a pug named Kenneth.

Dogs are great, so long as you have the time to train them well. My husband and I have a 2.5 year old West Highland White Terrier named is Milton, and he's a total riot. On one hand, he's an angel with other people and children, well-behaved, and LOVES going to the vet (Wierd, huh?). But there are times when his terrier side shows through and he's totally stubborn and tenacious (Fortunately, it's only with us that he tests his boundaries!). And his coat does require some maintenance-we have him groomed about 4x a year (but in between groomings, he really doesn't shed much!). But as a whole, we've been thrilled with the Westie's temperment.

We have 2 dogs. A border collie named Eureka! (Eure) and an aussie named Harper.

We live in a small condo but have a huge field a block away. We take the dogs there every single day - rain, sun, sleet, snow... We also focus on one small training item or trick every single day. Forcing the dogs to focus, learn, and perform keeps them mentally engaged and tuckers them out in between their walks (5 a day, I kid you not). We also have a dog walker we love on call. If our work days run late, she can stop by to take the dogs on their afternoon walk.

Anyway, dogs in small spaces are doable if you're really dedicated... and understand the dedication doesn't end for like 15 yrs.

I have two dogs (Finn and Munch) they're hysterical. And two cats (Big Kitty - yeah, i'm creative. and Little Girl - i know. i know...).

i love all my critters and honestly... they've been our family for so many years... my hubby and i love them.

i used to work at an animal shelter so it would have been really impressive NOT to have pets!

and are looking forward to adding the next addition (baby!) to the mix...

Having a dog is a very special privilege people have... they are truly gifts. they'll make you laugh, and make your home warm. and hairy... but its worth it.
you'll never come home to an empty house!

ok, i need to stop. i could go on for hours about pets... :)

Thanks so much,

Jessi

P.S. I love the idea of people names for animals. we have friends with a ferret named Darryl. its so funny...

I have a black and white border collie-shepherd mix (speckled black on white belly and paws) named Trout.

We call him Pig though. I'm not sure how that happened.

I have a golden lab/husky cross named Bella. I adopted her from an animal shelter when she was 2 months old. She is so much fun, and I love her dearly, but goodness gracious, dogs are a lot of work! And I totally crack up when hear of dogs with human names - it sounds so goofy!

I live in a tiny studio and have a maltichon (half Maltese and Bichon)named Bella. I don't have a picture of her with me but she looks just like the dog in this picture.

They really are a perfect size dog for tiny places and she loves socializing with other dogs in the dog park by my house.

when my aunt and uncle got a black lab puppy years ago, they let their 6 year old name it. She wanted "john", they said anything but john, so she named it blackie. Still makes me laugh!

Yeppers - a goofy little Boston Terrier named Sir Walter but usually we just call him Walter.

We have a sweet, sweet pupperoni named Micky. He's a black lab with the cutest face. He's my best pal. Having a dog is the biggest detractor from living in the city.

Dogs don't need a big home - just a lot of exercise...which they won't get inside anyways. You have room. Esp for a small-medium sized dog.

I have two, one is named Gordita {because she's always been fat} and one has a human name - Finn.

They are the best thing that has ever happened to me :).

Welsh Terrier named Rafa :)
3.5 years old.
Welsh breed, Spanish born, Costa Rican mother, Norwegian father (than being us). Call it Globalization!
Of course, a Spanish name, Rafa... from Rafael Nadal, the tennis player. While living in Madrid many men turned around when I called my dog, it was hillarious! They were a bit flattered/offended, tihi!

I think it's important to name your dog something that can have lots of nicknames. We have a wiener dog named Shorty Waffles Chamomile Biscuit but we call him: ShortStack, Shorts McGoricle, etc. : D

It's so funny that you speak of dogs with human names: years ago my parents named their Bernese Mountain Dog Bente. At the time it wasn't a common girls name. When I became pregnant, years later, I loved that name sooo much, but we couldn't bring ourselves to name our baby after a dog. I wonder if other people could. :)

I went through the stage that Alex is going through right now, about five months before we got our dog. They're pretty much the best creatures ever. (Also, when we leave her at the kennel, I revert to the stage of saying "Doggieeeeeee!" whenever I see one.)

Her name is Jayne. I've had a few people look at me funnily, as if to say "that's my mother's name."

I have dog and she has been a lifesaver. I have depression and anxiety and she does wonders for me. Way better than medication! I named her Ruby because I wanted her to have a song. Rancid and Kaiser Chiefs have songs about Ruby. I would say she is mostly named after the Rancid song since her full name is Ruby Soho. My brother also has a dog named Max E. Padd which is so fitting to his attitude. LOVE DOGGIES!!!

Beware dogs in an apartment. Our move to San Francisco with ours (Chloe and Bailey - which I no longer consider to be human names ;)) has been a tad tough since life now includes 16+ flights of stairs for the 4, or more, daily walks. But they do still make you smile PS my favorite dog name: Secret the Wonderdog. And yes you have to say the whole thing when you call him!

I have one too! We got her when I was 13, she is now 10 and lives with my mom right by central park. She is a german shepard/collie mix, and is absolutely amazing. When I walk her, I am always stopped and told how glorious she is. Another funny thing-She looks like everyone in my family! Just like the people from 101 dalmatians. She is german shepard colors, black and reddish/brownish/blonde. My dad and brother have black hair, so she looks like them. And then me and my mom have reddish/brownish/blonde hair, so she also looks like us! She fits in perfectly. She has a VERY human name too- Gabrielle. She is my sister.

Wow - what responses you get ... so many! Dogs, cats ... pets are a must (especially with kids in tow). My kids really, really want a cat. Problem is that daddy is allergic to them. Our garden is to small for a dog. Currently they 'borrow' Ella my parents chocolate lab dog. My dad named her after his favourite singer Ella Fitzgerald. After much 'pet demand' from my 6 yr old daughter, we are getting her a hamster this month. She's decided on the name; it's to be Jemima. If you fancy a look I wrote a post on 'Pets' on my blog buttercupdays the other month ... http://buttercupdaysuk.blogspot.com/2011/07/pets.html

Ahh, my favourite subject in the entire world! I can completely identify with Alex, being dog OBSESSED with a partner who doesn't mind dogs, but just isn't completely besotted with them (or previously scared). My partner Tim genuinely worries about my behaviour sometimes, I seem to loose all composure whenever there's a dog in the vicinity. There have been several occasions when we've been having a perfectly civil conversation, and suddenly my eyes (apparently) drift off over his shoulder, glaze over, I appear to stop listening, and a wry smile crosses my face. 'You're looking at a dog, aren't you?' is his perceptive remark.

In any case, I have a Labradoodle (at my parents home - she is mine, but I left for university and then moved to London) called Lily. Although a human name, it's also quite a common dog name. In England, anyway. Her mum, however, was called Alice - which, like you, I find hilarious. I think male human names for dogs particularly funny - like Chris - but female human names are just a bit strange! I do have a pet African pygmy hedgehog, however, called Mabel...

Ok, must reign in my enthusiasm now!

We have a little Cairn Terrier whose name is Swarley, very odd name that she got as a result of us watching How I Met Your Mother. (does anyone remember that episode? )
We were both like Alex before we got her, always wishing for a dog, stopping dogs in the street, walking the pet aisle at the grocery pointing out funny toys for our someday dog. Big dorks we are.

I love the idea of human names for dogs though. My best friend and her husband have two cats and a dog whose names are Henry, Charlie, and Parker. They always joke that since their pets have human names when they have children they will name them Fluffy, Buddy, etc., names that people usually give pets!

Oh no I can't have a dog, the thing is I can't take care of an animal ,I had a Parrot and I didn't know how take care of it so it passed away and that made me feel guilty ,so I'll never have a dog or anything else.
but if i had a dog I'd name it Dopey (the dwarf's name) :D

I have a French Bulldog that is brindle (black with tan streaks) named Scrapple. He is the coolest.

Growing up I had a cat named Frank... so I'm with you on the people pet names hilarity train!

We have a funny, smart and adorably cute Scottish Terrier named Margot. People laugh when we tell them her name, but soon agree that it fits her perfectly!
There's no real story behind her name other than the fact that I loved the name. I knew kids weren't in the near future, so I wanted to use it before someone else did :)

We've always use(d) human names for pets. My parents had a standard poodle when I was born. His name was Yuri. Then we got a Westie and named him Mac. My bearded collie is Greta. It gets a little confusing when our neighbor's 3 year old daugher, also named Greta, is outside. We now call her GG (for Grandma Greta) since she's 14, and definitely acting like a 98 year old. To be honest, I don't think we'll have another dog again (at least not until I have a teenage daughter that is begging for one, read: that's how I got my dog!). I've now realized I'm not really a dog person, but a Greta person. Another dog just wouldn't be the same.

We have a little Beagle and her name is Heidi. Someone at the Humane Society named her Heidi after she was rescued from a research lab. I figured there was a good reason that that person was so inclined to give her that particular name, so we kept it and she fits it perfectly. We too had a very small apartment at the time, but she seemed happy there and made it her own. Now we live in a larger place, that she has also made her own. Dogs are such wonderful little beings. :)

My husband & I have 2 pugs. Our intention was to just get one, but there was a boy and a girl left in the litter so we couldn't leave one behind. The boy is named Beazley, we usually call him Mr. Beaz, and the girl is named Paula Deen. Ironically, she's got to be the skinniest pug in existence. And yes, people definitely look at us strangely when we call Paula for sure! I find it hilarious though...human names are the best.

Denali - rescued from Humane Society 108lbs mush
Wolf - rescued on the side of the road Akita type

Ziggy - border terrier

Get a doggie - best thing for all 3 of you!

The family dog is a golden retriever named Joey :-) Because giving a dog a little boys name makes him all the more sweet, cute, and cuddly. If only he wasn't 3000 miles away at my parents' house. I want one soooo bad, but I feel like a puppy in a tiny apartment with two people who commute far to work doesn't leave time to give a pup the attention he/she deserves.

lol I love when people name their pets human names - like Wilson or Burt or Frank (for some reason I seem to like male dog names!)

I have a boxer named Bella (I got her before twilight was the craze so she's named after the Italian saying "beautiful")

My parents have two golden retrievers named Maggie and Molly - their names suit them but one of my good friends is a Maggie so sometimes I have to make it clear which one I'm talking about.

I also live in a small apartment and when I first got my dog I was in an even smaller one. Boxer's are really high-strung dogs but the space has never been an issue. As long as you're close to a park so that they can run at least once a day for an hour then it's no problem.
