Do you have a dog?

Do you have a dog? Alex wants one badly. Alas, our current apartment is way too small, but Alex literally can't pass a dog on the street without saying, "Doggggggeeee! Doggggeeee! Oh, you're a dog, you're just a dog!" It's like a tic.

My friend Lina and I always say it would be funny to name your dog a very human name—like Kevin or Brad, or Jennifer or Kristen. For some reason, that really makes me laugh.

Do you have a dog? What's its name?

i have the most amazing french bulldog around named pasha. i adopted him from a family in park slope about a year ago and couldn't be happier. he is part of my family and some days, there is no one else i would rather come home to. that said, it is a huge life changing experience (can you tell i dont have kids?) that is expensive, hard work and totally worth it.

I just got my first dog this year! She is a boxer mix (never thought I would get a boxer) from the Oregon Humane Society.
I was in the same state as Alex, could not keep my paws off them! And then I saw "Pally" (A name I made up).
Also when I saw her she had 3 people on the waitlist for her, I took a picture of her with my phone and kept it even after I was told she was adopted. Fast forward to two weeks later and I'm cruising the Humane website and there she is! Her new owners had returned her! I raced down to the shelter and signed the papers.
Getting her was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Although I didn't feel like I had a choice in the matter after I saw her! When you know, you know. xo

HADES and CHLOE. Hades is a mix of pitbull, poodle, greyhound and german shepherd. He really took after his name. He was also weighed at 66.6 pounds once. his nickname is beardog. Chloe is a mix of siberian husky and greyhound. She's a total princess. Her nickname is rabid because she makes this crazy rabid looking face and hops like a rabbit.

We have a lab/schnuazer mixed named Falkor (he kind of looks like the luck dragon from the NeverEndering Story). But we call him Matt Damon sometimes because we think it's hilarious.

I always thought the name "Mantooth" from the movie Anchorman would make a hilarious dogname.

You most definitely should get a dog! Growing up we always had a family dog, but having one that is my own is so much more exciting. My boyfriend dragged me to the pound last year to look at a yellow lab his boss had showed him at work, but when we got there I saw a little jack russell and fell in love immediately. We left with the jack russell and have been so happy ever since. She was a runaway so they didn't know her name, but The vet techs named her Cynthia. I changed her name to Olive.

He's a mini poodle, and they seriously are the best. No shedding!

I have a four-legged child named Charles Winston. He's a cattle dog, pointer mix. I look forward to going home to my big, furry, neurotic 3-year-old, going on 3-month old pup everyday. I think human names are SO much better than say "Spot" or "Chance". Plus, everytime I go to the vet and they call out for Charles Winston I can't help but giggle.

My friend has a cat named Kevin. But dogs are THE BEST. If space/exercise is an issue it's best to stay away from mid sized dogs. Most are high energy working dogs that will become a nightmare in an apartment.

Even better is to adopt a dog that you can meet and play with, making sure it is a fit for your lifestyle. So many dogs are given up to pounds and euthanized. Adoption is really the best way to go!!

ooo i feel just like alex.. i see a dog and have the same reaction.. no dog for this family either, apartment is too small as well, so its quite an enjoyment to walk into petsmart and play with everyone else's dogs. :)

We adopted a Boston Terrier named Jelly from a shelter 3 or 4 years ago. She's very small for a Boston (about 12-13 lbs) and the laziest dog in the world. She's getting older and is more annoyed every day with stairs, bad weather (no shortage of that here!), no table scraps, not enough new toys, lack of whatever she wants whenever she wants it...but she loves to sleep.
She knows when to expect me home from work, and if I come home early and interrupt her "nap" or have a day off she looks at me like I am ruining her life!

So Alex just needs to find a dog like her! Most Bostons aren't this lazy though, so don't be fooled. I think she has more of a Frenchie/Bulldog temperament.

Charlie! A very large dog living in a tiny studio apartment. It's totally fine as long you make sure to give them plenty of exercise. It will probably help you get outside with Toby for walks even on those cold winter days :)

One major tip- ADOPT an older dog (2+ years). They will likely already be trained and house broken. Puppy equals another baby in the house!

I love myself a dog! We have a 3 year old English Cocker Spaniel named Izzie. We rescued her almost a year ago and it was one of the best decisions we have ever made! Although our apartment isn't ideal for a dog, she manages to fit just swell there. :)

I always had dogs growing up and have such fond memories of all of them that it makes me tear up at the thought of them!

Two of my favorite dogs while growing up were Boxers (Rebel & Dixie). I knew I didn't have enough space for a big beautiful Boxer though so when it came time to get a dog of my own I chose a Boston Terrier. Her name is Scout and she is a wonderful little dog. Very smart and eager to please, loves children and other dogs. One of the things I like best is that, though she is small at 15lbs, she is very muscular and athletic and not at all delicate like some small breeds.

We have a mini-dachshund who is literally like our child. He is the best!! The best snuggler, the best at making us laugh, the best protector of the fortress, the best listener (especially when you need someone who will just agree with you, not talk back, and kiss your tears away.)

We never thought we were "small dog people" because both my husband and I grew up with Springer Spaniels as pets (our dads hunted), but we got our mini-D when we lived in a small apartment (obv. we needed a "compact" pet) and we have never looked back. Best dog either of us have ever had, hands down. His name is Charlie Brown and he's the light of our lives. :)

Our dog's name is Indy - after Indiana Jones - in the movie, Indiana has a husky too (we have a siberian husky)... suppose in the movie, you find out that Indiana Jones was actually named after the dog and not the other way around. ;) i.e. "You were named after the dog?!" Indiana: "I loved that dog."

I also think Francois is a great name for a bulldog.

I waited a looong time before finally committing to get a dog. I like my happy hours and wanted to make sure I was ready, you know. I knew I wanted to adopt a mutt, and since this is my first ever pet, I decided on getting an older one. I adopted a 6 year old Daphne Devereaux (named after Blanche, of course) a year ago, and she's been woooonderful! I agree that I do think it would be too challenging in an apartment, but as a previous commenter brought up, I'm lazy. :P I like to add titles to her name sometime, such as Daphne Devereux, Esq.

Tragic Sandwich said...

We talked about getting a dog once we were no longer in our apartment. We thought we'd get a medium-sized dog that Mr. Sandwich could take running with him. But first we wanted to settle into the house. And then I was pregnant, and we figured that was enough change.

Then one day a toy poodle walked up to Mr. Sandwich at the corner store and put her paw on his foot. She followed him home--and although we tried a variety of ways to find her owner, no one ever came for her. So she became our dog, and while she's not the dog we imagined, she's exactly the dog we need. (Seriously, she's even been amazing with Baguette, who loves to pull on her ears.)

Her name is Wicket, because when she rolls on her back for tummy rubs, she looks just like an Ewok.

We have a mini poodle (great apartment dogs!) Her name is Beatrix but everyone calls her Trixie. It's funny because when we were naming her, I looked through baby name lists and kept finding names I wanted to keep for a future child, even though I had never even considered them for my baby name list! (Georgia, Ruby, Chloe...) I guess that's the peril of a people name for a pet!

Dog names (and pet names in general) are one of my favorite topics! We have a Great Dane mix named Madison - she was named before I came into the picture, but now I think it suits her and couldn't imagine calling her anything else - and a Great Pyrenees named Banksy (after the street artist, obviously). We were in the process of adopting a Newfoundland pup whom I was going to call Beverly, but that fell through.

The funny thing about having a giant breed dog is that they don't really require all that much square footage as many breeds (especially Great Danes) are just big couch potatoes. Our dogs love going for walks, but will gladly lounge when we're indoors.

On the subject of human names, we have friends with a lab named Bill and it suits him quite well. We also have 4 chickens in our backyard named after queens - Cleo, Bess, Esther, and Wilhelmina.

I don't have a dog, they seem like a far bigger commitment than I am willing to make as a single girl who lives alone and isn't home much. If I did have a dog I would name it after a historical figure like Winston Churchill or Lady Jane Grey I find the idea of a dog named after a real person to be so funny (I think it is even funnier if they have a title - why? I'm a dork!).

I adopted my dog over three years ago. She was a random mix of lab, basset hound, and bull terrier. She is 80lbs, very stocky and muscular, with a sweet lab face. The shelter had named her Mercedes! Eck! I couldn't figure that one out, haha, she was definitely NOT a Mercedes.

I named her Bassie because of her basset hound belly speckles. I was mad at myself for not being more "clever" picking out a name (I contemplated Shawty but figured that would get old.) Now, I think it fits her perfectly.

Our dogs have always had names that people wouldn't: London, Friday, Dusty, but before I was born my parents had a dog named Luke (which is my boyfriend's middle name, haha). The funniest dog names I've heard are from people I knew in high school. A classmate named his dog Bucket (I find it hilarious for some reason) and my favourite english teacher named his dog Cat and his cat Dog when his children were small. How terrible (but funny) is that?

I come from a family of dog nicknamers. Our dogs are rarely called by their real names. My dog is named Belle but I call her Belly Button or Jelly Belly. My mom has one dog called Payton, a/k/a Mr. Baby and one called Lulu a/k/a Mommy's Little Girl, clearly my mother was going through some empty nest issues when her dogs were named. The best part is that my dog is a Great Dane and my mom's dogs are Mastiffs. Yelling Mommy's Little Girl at a 150 lb Mastiff is ridiculous!

So many comments! Dogs are the BEST. I have a Newfoundland named Lucy. She's the love of my life. We've always name our dogs with people names -- but that are sorta dog/people names like Maggie, Samantha, Annie, Katie & Molly. My friends have dogs named Harper, Audrey, Frankie, Jax ...

Joanna, I have a friend who named his dog Brad -- everyone cracks up every time we talk about him! My cat's name is George. It matches him perfectly and people always ask me why I would name him such a dorky human name...

One of our favorite games is picking human names for future pets. Our dog is Gary, Gary Ryan. The short list was: Ian, Steve and Gary. He is definitely a Gary :)

We have a terrier mix rescue named Pierce (after Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics). We adopeted him wen he was approximately 10 weeks old. He's the best! Really good with our 6 month old baby who loves to pet him and have him kiss her toes. Strongly recommend rescuing a pup when you decide it is time for a dog.

Yes, I have a dog. And the dog and Baby get along just super! they chase each other and give each other kisses, and fight over toys. And we trained our dog really well, so he's incredibly gentle and never grouchy with her - even when she yanks his tongue like a yo-yo!

I am a very proud momma of a Brindle Old English Bulldogge and a Blue Great Dane. I take them everywhere! It was funny, with both of our pets, my husband and I had the hardest time choosing a name. We names our Bulldogge Bella (the only one we could agree on) and our Great Dane Steel (because of his color). Once you get one, you'll never know how you functioned with out them.

Our dogs have all had pretty varying names -- all whippets. We had Niles (after Niles Crane on Frasier), Shawn (we didn't name him! he came to us an adult), Pharaoh (later renamed by the breeder as Sherman), and Pip!

We have a great dane named Wellington and he is the biggest member of our family by far -- 168 lbs, respectively. And yet we all fit cozily in our Brooklyn apartment. The bigger the dog, the better the personality. (Take that, tea cup breeds! Ha!)

That is too funny about the human names for dogs - our neighbors let their 4 yr old pick their's, so they have a chubby little dachshund, named Steve. :)

I find it so funny that I've been reading Cup of Joy for over a year now and it's THIS post that drives me to comment for the first time! We're so completely head-over-heels for our pup named Beasley. We rescued him from Much Love Animal Rescue and he's been the sweetest, most playful, furriest bundle of joy!

My husband and I REALLY want a dog as well but have too small of a space.

We have had the exact conversation about how funny it would be to name a dog a very human name, and Kevin is always our example. We thought it would be hilarious to get two dogs...a big one named Professor Wigglebottom and a little one named Kevin.

My english lab's name is Henry. However his full name is Henry, Lord Wulfsly, 1st Earl of Brownwood (our street). I don't know why we made his an earl, perhaps Duke was too lofty. And I cannot recommend getting a dog enough. They brighten every day. Coming home is a delight because you know he (or she) will be there and be so excited to see you. And they help with the blahs in winter - forcing you to go outside and revel in it, because how can you not revel when you watch your dog in the snow.

We had a beloved female pit named Peyton. Best dog ever. She was 16. She passed away right before our 2nd daughter was born in June. She left a large hole in our family. We're adopting another pit -pick him up tonight! He's a 9 month old rescue. His foster family has been calling him Peyton (it's like she lead us to him). He'll need a new name of course. We're thinking of Amos....Otto...or maybe Abbott.

We have a dog named Kevin! And funny enough the name fits him exactly. I had wanted to name him Miso (or something equally cutesy) while my husband wanted to name him Kevin. Many arguments ensued over the name. I thought I had won until husband brought Kevin home. As soon as I met him, I knew this dog was meant to be named Kevin.

Our family dog is named Stewart. He has the personality of an old grumpy man so it works perfectly!

Unfortunately, my apartment does not allow dogs. But, one more year of this lease and I am going dog crazy. Honestly. I think I'll be the crazy dog lady.

I've always had a thing for naming animals really quirky names or literary names. But I think I'll name my next dog Winifred, Winnie for short...

So in love with my little Rosie, a mutt from a rescue shelter. Much training and patience was needed as she had some issues but it was all worth it. Adopt a dog dont buy one, there are so many amazing creatures on pet finder...or go to animal haven in soho lots of little gems!

I've got a pup named Layla that my boyfriend adopted about 2 years before we met. She's the best! We have a rotating list of names that include but are not limited to: Potato, Pookie, Pookie Bug, Pookie La Rioux, Dingo, The Face, and Rayra. She's a retriever and shiba mix (we think) and sometimes I think I love her so much that my heart feels like it's about to pop! Get a dog :)

I have a wonderful golden retriever named Lily. She is a big dog, but we live in Manhattan and have a great time seeing all of our dog friends at the park. I suggest living near a park if you get a dog in the city, but it can be great.

i miss having a dog! my family's australian shepherd died earlier this year (she was 13), and my parents are thinking about getting a new puppy. i wish i had the time and the money for one of my own, though!

also, my neighbors back home had dogs named Ed and Steve. poor Steve had dementia and would wander off...sad, but pretty funny when you saw the kids walking down the block calling for him! "Oh, Steve? He's our beagle."

I had a friend who's roommate named her cats after her aunts. I was at a party at her house when this information came out. I laughed and said, "Who does that? As if the cat is going to respond to that name." I yelled "Catherine" across the apartment at this cat and to my surprise and delight, Catherine turned and gave me one of those cat looks.
Also, someone my sister knows had a black lab named, Bob. I guess it works, right?

LOVE human names on dogs! My dog's name is Moses, and my parents have a dog named John.

As for small apartment space, have you thought of getting a large dog? This may seem counter-intuitive, but my dog (a Great Pyrenees/Golden Retriever mix) is so lazy that he needs no space at all. He sleeps all day, and a half-hour walk wears him out completely.

I hear this is also true for Mastiffs. :)

A Boston Terrier named Miley, and a Weimaraner named Georgia! My husband came up with Miley, yes based on Miley Cyrus, but just because he liked the name, not that he was necessarily a fan of the person :)

I have two cats. I would have gotten a dog, but I'm a grad student in a tiny Manhattan apartment (i.e. no time, no space for a dog). My kitties are named Alexander Hamilton (Hammie) for the first treasurer of the U.S. and Aaron Miskovitch (Misko) for a former hockey player from Minnesota. I only use their full names when I'm really mad at them... My friend has a Bassett Hound named Sir Winston, too. Another good name!

This is so crazy. My boss and I were talking literally moments ago about how hilarious normal names are for dogs. "Oh, this is my dog, Gregory." "Yeah dude, come over, I'm hanging out with Nick. He's my dog."

My boyfriend and I got a Maltese last year and named her Minnie. Clearly, he had no input into the breed or name. She is the best, with her elaborate stretching routine in the mornings and how she is always up for a good snuggle. It is a great excuse to get outside everyday to take her for walks to the dog park. Since we have gotten her, I fear we have become those crazy dog people: I catch my boyfrind singing and talking to Minnie when I am in the other room, and we sent out Christmas cards to all our friends last year from Minnie.
