NYC Guide: Five great hotels
My darlings, people always ask us where they should stay when visiting New York. So, here are five great places...
1. The rooms at the Larchmont Hotel aren't super charming (think: Best Western), but they're clean, comfortable and cheap. (You can get a double room for less than $150, even on a weekend!) You also have to share a bathroom with the people staying on your hall. But the real plus is the location: a beautiful street right in the middle of Greenwich Village. (Personal note: My whole family stayed here during our wedding weekend and gave it a thumbs up.) A great bare-bones budget hotel.

2. Abingdon Guest House is smack in the middle of the West Village, an adorable neighborhood with cobblestone streets, playgrounds, bakeries, romantic restaurants, bookstores and boutiques, and it's central so you can get around town easily. The cozy rooms have four-poster beds, skylights and fireplaces; all are less than $250 a night.

3. The Ace Hotel in Manhattan--like those in Portland and Palm Springs--is super hip, playful and fun. The enormous lobby is filled with comfy sofas; you can work on your computer (they have wireless), meet friends for a drink (they have a bar) or just relax (they have a DJ). The rooms feel like cool apartments, with French doors, vintage furniture and record players, and you can get one with bunk beds if you're staying with a friend. The catch: The location isn't perfect--it's near Broadway in midtown, which is kind of dreary, so you'll have to take a subway to most other neighborhoods to hang out and have dinner; however the Ace is so fun, it could be worth it.

4. The Standard Hotel looks like an opened book, don't you think? I love its modern design and too-cool-for-school vibe; and because of the architecture, every single room has an amazing view: either the sunset over the river or the twinkling lights of the city. Some rooms have clawfoot bathtubs right in the middle. We stayed here on our wedding night and adored the swanky, sexy ambiance. The location is also awesome: downtown in the Meatpacking District, steps from the Highline (which we'll talk about later!); they also have a rad beer garden (with German sausages, pretzels and ping-pong tables) and a romantic restaurant.

5. You might also consider renting an apartment. That way, you'll instantly feel like a local, you'll have a kitchen and living room if you want to cook or watch movies, you'll have extra space if you have a baby (or other friends and relatives traveling with you), and you'll probably spend much less than if you stayed in a hotel. There are many amazing apartment rentals in Manhattan and Brooklyn on the websites airbnb, homeaway or vrbo. If you want to narrow down your search, you could look for places on the Upper West Side, Chelsea, Greenwich Village or the West Village, since those neighborhoods are all lovely and central. (For example, here are lovely places in Greenwich Village, the West Village, Chelsea, and the Upper West Side. We also stayed at this one-bedroom gem in the West Village when our own apartment was undergoing construction, and it was fantastic.) FYI, we always rent our two-bedroom apartment in the West Village when we go on vacation, and I always post the dates on the blog in case you're interested!
Spill the beans: Where do you guys stay when visiting New York? If you live here, which hotels do you suggest to friends? I'd LOVE to hear your recommendations!

Excellent. Will keep this in mind for when my parents and I decide to finally get our butts to NY. Thanks. :)
PS. Love the Standard. Would like to stay there with the bf. It looks so sexy.
That bathtub and window is unreal. Sign me up!!
you must have read my mind! i'm there to meet my editor in october and am struggling a bit between availability and price. we have a friend's apartment, but my mom's tagging along and cannot do the 4th floor walkup.
it's looking like the Roosevelt.
hope to see you, xo erica
The Crosby Street Hotel. Great cocktails and amazing artwork!
Loving your guide to the city! I always feel kind of sheepish having lived here for a few years and not knowing all the cool spots. Thanks for keeping me hip. ;)
My husband and I are planning a trip to NY over Christmas, thank you so much for the suggestions!
I couldn't agree more with your Ace Hotel pick. I have been to each hotel at all their locations and have NEVER been let down.
The Ace Hotel in Manhattan looks super cool. I'd love to stay there next time I'm in town. Great selection, Joanna. Kisses
yes, the ace is awesome! we stayed at the one in palm springs and loved it. their pool is so cool.
I have heard of renting an apartment, what a clever idea.
This is so, so helpful!! Especially LOVE the idea of renting an apartment! Thank you! :)
I actually like the idea of sharing a bathroom (so long as it's clean). It reminds me of Europe. Thanks for these recommendations, Joanna!
The Tribeca Grand Hotel is also a great place to stay.
I've stayed at the thirty thirty in midtown a lot, it was great, reasonably priced and close t a lot of things. They just renovated.

I think my first choice would be the Abingdon Guest House because it looks so old world and modern at the same time, and then second choice is rent an apartment (so fun). Dreaming of NY travels...
Thanks so much for the recommendations. I think the idea of staying in an apartment is a great one especially being in such a big city. It gives you an at home feeling while being able to experience the big city.
thanks for the info about Larchmont Hotel. perfect for my friends from abroad who want to stay at a budget hotel (but still nice) in NYC.
The Gramercy Park Hotel is truly one of the finest in the city. It's an Ian Schrager hotel, which means you can expect a very cool, hip atmosphere and unbeatable service. It's a little pricey, but you get your money's worth! Would definitely go back.
They all look great but I really like the look of Abingdon! Thanks for sharing!
I'm a Brooklyn-er, and have looked into renting apartments for my parents when they come. How does renting out your apartment work? Do you guys rent or own? Have you had good luck with renters? I'd be so worried something would happen to our stuff!
We're partial to the Ace for our out-of-town guests, but the Maritime Hotel (just down the block from the Standard) is awesome too!
(We also love renting our apartment out when we're gone. We're right down the street from Joanna, so if anyone is interested in a 1-bedroom in the West Village... ;)
Makes me want to come to NYC NOW! I would definitely stay at the Larchmont.
I love that you are doing a guide to NYC. Great suggestions for places to stay. We put our apartment in Chelsea on airbnb when we got away on vacation as well. If anyone is looking for a place check it out http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/159022
The Greenwhich Hotel in Tribeca is the BEST! And if you stay there you can easily get reservations at Locanda Verde any night (divine).
I ´m planning a trip to NY , thank you so much for the information!!!
i love these tips!! the crosby hotel looks gorgeous.
I am soo happy you posted this! It's extremely helpful, and takes the guess work out of picking a hotel in a city with so many!
Now, I'm ready to book a date night ;)
De Nueva, we've had really great experiences renting our apt -- we rent (versus own), and we just mail the keys to the people who are coming to visit, and they send the payment via paypal or mail a personal check. we've honestly never had a problem, and everyone has seemed really wonderful, polite, clean and gracious. i would recommend it! xoxo
Thank you so much for this information, especially for the rentals instead of hotels!
We've stayed in a few hotels and a few B and Bs (The Washington Square Park hotel, has small rooms but great charm, great location) and Stay The Night B and B on the upper East side (too far out of everything for my taste). Since then, for years we've used various apartment rental sites like nycityliving.com and even craigslist. Nycityliving.com had great apartments in the East Village which is where we always want to end up. We rented one from them for 5 weeks and it was the best 5 weeks of our lives! Definitely recommend rentals if you're staying more than 3 nights...
I come up to NYC a couple times every year and stay at the Desmond Tutu Center in Chelsea, love the hotel and the area!
okay i could stay in all of these. that's what a should do. a little taste of it all.
Lindsay
the inn at irving place is sublime. its unmarked and very old new york and feels like a secret. near gramcery park --- www.innatirving.com
This guide to NYC couldn't come at a better time -- visiting the city next weekend (spontaneous trips are the best)! Will definitely be using your blog as a guide! :)
Joanna, Sometime can you write your tips for renting out your apt? My fiance wants to rent out our East Village apt for a month while we travel. I'm super nervous about allowing strangers that we won't even meet stay in our beautiful home! Do you collect a security deposit? Hide the breakables? Install hidden cameras (ok, kidding on that one)?
Thanks, Ava
Our friends recently stayed at the Chelsea Pines Inn and LOVED IT. The hospitality, the location, everything...and the price is right!
http://www.chelseapinesinn.com/
This is so great tips. Me and my teenage girls dream about going to NY. Hopefully soon. :)
Thank you all.
Best regards from Sweden .
This info couldn't be more helpful! Thanks :)
PS: Got any good places in Chicago? We're going in November!

some amazing places to stay there which I haven't yet heard about! adore the ACE Hotel so stylish and cool! xoxo
http://some-kind-of-style.blogspot.com/
what a great guide! I will be prepared now when I finally make my first trip to NYC!
Thanks so much for this information, they all look so great!
We stayed at The Dylan Hotel and LOVED it.
we rented a place in boston from the owner. it was so fun!!! loved being in a neighborhood and imagining i was a local. i still remember our family walking home one evening and hearing the crowd cheering from fenway park and from people's windows. it was truly awesome!!!
ps- love "the gem" chain if you are looking for a quaint boutique hotel. i stayed at the one in chelsea last year. one day my room was between the stylist and makeup and hair person for anne heche who was filming a movie scene down the street! one of the sound guys gave me a call sheet which i still have. i need to check if the movie has even come out, it was such a fun surprise!
Great tips! I'm anxious to visit NYC again, this time with our boy, who's under 1-year. So the apartment rental would be a great way to go for us. If you ever want to swap for a house in Santa Cruz, Ca, let me know!
You forgot to mention that The Standard supplies a generous-size bottle of bubble bath for their amazing tubs! We stayed there for our wedding night/part of our honeymoon in 2009. It really nice!
You missed the most fun part about staying at the Standard in a room overlooking the Highline ;)
Great suggestions! Cheap and clean is good in my book when you plan to be out the whole time anyway!
Some friends and I wanted to make a weekend trip and looked up some great places on airbnb--but my husband had big concerns over the legality of it. He said there are tenant laws against it in NYC. Say it ain't so! Any insights on that?
Oooh the Abignon Guest House looks so cozy. Now that we have a baby though I think I'd take your suggestion and rent out someone's apartment. So much easier with a little one. We used to stay in Staten Island with my cousin and his family when they lived there. I actually loved taking the ferry into Manhattan every day. Made my heart swell a little bit passing by the Statue of Liberty each morning. :)
I have been itching to stay at The Standard. Hope to get there soon!
P.S. if you visit San Diego and need a place let me know. We already have baby things here. Haha.
My husband and I rented a gorgeous apartment through air bnb in Chelsea when we came to New York this summer. It was amazing! Totally would go that route again.
The Tribeca Grand is just beautiful. The staff is terrific and they are very generous with upgrades. And their room service is fantastic. My husband and I stayed there on our honeymoon and for our 2nd anniversary (during last year's crazy post-Christmas snowstorm).
The Roger Williams in Murray Hill is also really fun. It has a European vibe and a great breakfast room that becomes a bar in the afternoons.
I've never been to New York but it is totally on my to visit list. Really appreciate the tips!
thank you for this! my boyfriend and i have been saving up to take a trip to NYC for my 21st birthday (I am a huge sex&the city geek, and have been dreaming of my first legal drink being a cosmopolitan in NYC!), but we have been searching for the best place to stay on a budget. Airbnb is great!
Joanna, thank you soooo much for this great post! I very recently sent you an e-mail wondering if you would consider recommending places to stay in Manhattan. I don't know whether this post is only a coincidence or not but I am so excited to see it!
Hooray for the Ace! We've been to all 4 (you left out Seattle- it's a good one!). My husband proposed at the NY Ace and our honeymoon roadtrip started at the Portland Ace and ended in Palm Springs!
Totally, totally recommend. :)
The Ace hotel looks very nice.
Greetings,
Filip
We always stay at the Carlton Hotel. We live in Philly and usually take the train up, it's a super close walk from Penn Station and close to things we like to do.
Lovely hotels!
Last time I was in NYC we rented an apartment in the West Village and it was so wonderful. The neighborhood was fantastic, and it was really great to spend the day in crazy-busy parts of the city and come back to the more relaxed neighborhood as a change of pace.
i agree with many others when i say that this makes me want to book a trip to nyc right now. the city should start giving you commission. :)
The Bowery Hotel is my top choice for sure. A bit pricey, but completely worth it for special occasions. Free bikes to rent, cozy bathrobes, a dvd library and cookies delivered in the evening add up to one fantastic place to stay. I would recommend it to anyone visiting NY or just looking to get away from it all for a lovely evening.
I need a new place to stay when i come into the city!
Best cheap hotels, the Best Western Bowery Hanbee Hotel in Chinatown, and the Choice Hotel next to the big Whole Foods in the Bowery.
great post, thank you for the tips:)
Standard is my favorite!!! We also was the first couple to hold our wedding there. Fantastic!!!
these all look awesome! Nothing in Harlem huh? lol
I usually crash on a sofa, but soon I hope, I'll be suggesting some fun places to stay to my fam and friends too!
We go pretty often but usually stay with friends in Midtown. But we've just booked a room at NU Hotel in Brooklyn for a little getaway. We've never stayed but it's supposed to be a pretty nice hotel, so fingers crossed!
Ha, I just drive home! I live a little over an hour away, so I can't justify spending money to stay there. When one of my college roommates lived in Jersey City I'd crash at her place sometimes, but that's as close as I've gotten to actually staying in NYC overnight. ;-)
just booked mine last week, hopefully it will be good so i ll let you know, sophie from france
I had a really good experience renting an apartment via Craigslist (although if I were going to do it again, I would use one of the sites you listed just for my own peace of mind). It was in a great location, had plenty of space, and was inexpensive. The only downside? It was a sixth floor walk up! But since we were out and about most of the time, we only had to walk up all those stairs a few times.
Thanks for the great suggestions...Will be in NYC the end of October so this series is perfect timing...any tips for 2 friends coming for some great shopping and food?
We are currently looking our brains out for a place Dec. 4-8. For the first time we are coming as a family. Usually just my husband and I go to NYC (from Toronto). My kids are adults (19,22). We have rented some amazing places in NYC, the last one was an entire HOUSE in the village. It's owned by a journalist who travels to Afganistan a lot. Unfortunately it's not available this time. I would rent your place in a minute if you were going Dec. 4-8. Give it some thought :D A good friend of mine rented your apt. once - Avery! I checked out your hotel and apt. links and they look pretty good. Hopefully we'll book something soon - my first NYC Christmas time vacation.
They all look lovely but I'd definitely go with the renting an apartment suggestion. Hotels work out so expensive if you're staying for a week or so (as a Brit that's usually my minimum visit).
We just rented an airbnb place - a loft in Red Hook. It was super awesomely amazingly and only around $100 per night.
It'd be great to do a couple of treaty nights in one of these hotels though.
Last couple of time I've been I have stayed at The Muse on West 46th Street. Really loved the boutique feel of this modern hotel, and it's amazing location!
Check out the James Hotel Soho. It's been open just a year. A great location and really great customer service. They offer lots of weekend specials too!
I definitely recommend Hotel 17 which is in downtown Manhattan, right next to Stuyvesant Park and near the East Village. My boyfriend and I stay there every time we visit NY because it's super cheap (under $200) and has charm.
Plus, it has some interesting claims to fame: Madonna stayed there, Vogue has done photoshoots there, and if you've ever seen Woody Allen's movie Manhattan Murder Mystery, that's the hotel he used in the movie. (The interior looks way better now though, having been renovated.)
You have to share a bathroom, but the location is great and so is the price. We love it; we're staying there again in November when we visit for his birthday.
I have been waiting for this post. We are coming for our Honeymoon in oh 2 weeks. Thank you so much. I can't wait to look at each of your suggestions.
I used to live in NYC and we come back and visit every year! We are so fortunate bc my husband's grandmother still lives in her West Village apartment at Hudson and Barrow St. She is 90 and has been living there 60+ years in a 3 BEDROOM RENT CONTROLLED apt in the West Village. Unbelievable right?! I love love the West Village and think it is the best part of the city to stay in. It is so charming and there are so many restaurants and boutiques to explore.
Makes me miss it just talking about it! :)
Last December, we rented an apartment via airbnb, a lovely, mid-century furnished place near the UN. The hotel prices were soaring, so the apartment seemed like a good compromise, and it indeed was - Chrysler Building views from the breakfast table and all.
The UN apartment: http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/17007
Recommend: The Dylan Hotel
Craving: The Greenwich Hotel
Jo, this series is awesome thank you :) I was recommended to look at airbnb if i visit new york because it's cheaper than hotels. also a friend of mine stayed in a hostel last year and said it was awesome.
awesome!! thank you very much!! I'm planning a trip (hopefully move) to New York... so this has been helpful..
maybe some bed & breakfast for someone on a budget??.. :)
awesome blog by the way.. been visiting for a while now..
Last time I stayed at The Jane. Good for folks on a budget. The rooms are tiny but the free bike rentals make up for it!
As mentioned on my comment on your NYC restaurant post me and my partner are coming to New York in December. We're staying at The Surrey, some rooms have a view of Central Park. Very excited!
Tulips&Tulle
I didn't read through all the them---way to many! But I have stayed twice at The Marcel at Gramercy, right near Gramercy Park and have absolutely loved it. They have very reasonable rates and great common space with a rooftop terrace. I love visiting NYC :)
A truly incredible hotel but in Boston is called the Kendall. It is right on the MIT campus and is a old fire house that has been converted into a clean but vintage hotel. If you're planning a trip to Boston stay here, it's very inexpensive for the quality of everything they provide. (It's also right next to a T stop)
Thanks for this. I LOVE the idea of renting out your apartment. What a great way to earn a little extra income. And so nice to stay in a cozy home rather than an impersonal hotel room - and over Christmas!

I love your NY guide!!!!
I found your advices very useful...
Thanks,Melania.
I will definitely be reading through all these comments for some insight for myself as well! I am an American married to a Brit and living in London. I've lived in NY in the past- W. Village, too:). We have a one year old and this question is always on our mind: where to live? England vs. USA... city vs. country. Near family or not. I don't know:)??!! It's such a dilema. I love all that is on our doorsteps by living in a city and yet I long for more space and a bit more calm. Hoping that time will make it clearer!
For anyone travelling on a budget, I would heartily recommend East Village Bed & Coffee http://www.bedandcoffee.com/
It's a fantastically friendly and quirky place to stay (the rooms are themed) in a great low-key and friendly area. You get access to a kitchen, Bathroom and lounge (One on each floor) - so not for anyone who needs ensuite. The owner is super nice and accomodating, and full of recommendations. She has created a fun and creative atmosphere (that is also very clean and tidy) with lots of personality.
I've also stayed at the Larchmont which is such a great deal, especially for the location.
Thank you so much...This is a very useful information. I'm planing to go to NYC next year and now considering to stay at one of these hotels.
Same as Lucy above, I stayed at both East Village Bed and Coffee and the Larchmont in April 2006. EVB&C recommended the Larchmont when we decided to stay in NYC longer and they were booked out. I preferred the first but the Larchmont was pretty good for the money. Only thing I really didn't like about it was a plastic mattress protector which was not very comfortable.
Thanks for the guide, we're headed to NYC December 8-11th, and looking for lots of suggestions so this is great! What in the world happens in NYC over that weekend that makes hotel prices double though? Renting an apartment is looking better and better.
I've stayed at the Abingdon, it is clean and convenient to downtown. Since it opened I stay at the Greenwich Hotel in TriBeCa. http://thegreenwichhotel.com/
They have a private guest lobby where a fire burns and tea is served year round, snacks (gourmet and drug store) are complimentary in the rooms - so is bottled water. Amazing service, beautiful rooms, and delicious food from Locanda Verde.
I am addicted to The Library Hotel in Midtown, right by the NY Public Library and Bryant Park. Their rooms are all "themed" based on the Dewey Decimal System, and they have a lovely second floor library/lounge and a rooftop bar!
a little studio to rent in village
http://www.greenwichvillagehome.com/
also brownstone in harlem. All of our Italian friends stayed there the week of our wedding. It was so great having a place were 10 friends could stay all together, cook big italian meals. It was perfect.
http://www.130westnyc.com/
i couldnt of agree with you more. ive been to the first one and loved it! and love the standard of course. when i want to get away from the bronx i go there i love it. its so funny you can see it in real time! great post. im so taking notes.
Hotel Giraffe! Small, boutique, midtown. Love it.
last spring i stayed at the jane and i would stay there again and again and again. the hotel has old world charm and is in a great neighbourhood, right next to the highline.
also, cafe gitane - the restaurant at the jane - has breakfasts that can easily make one obsessed. i could not get enough of their avocado on toast and baked eggs and organic spicy, breakfast sausages.
I have stayed in the Millenium and the Belvedere, but wasn't blown away by either. I am looking for somewhere great in the lower east side for the next time I go.
I agree with the others, thanks for the NYC guide ... saving the info for my next trip. As far as hotels, I typically stay around the times square area and have stayed at the Belvedere several times - love the convenience to Times Square and 5th Ave w/o all the noise and traffic. On my last trip I stayed at the Wellington... again - near Central Park, easy access to the subway, and walking distance to Times Square, Rockefeller Center and 5th Ave. Next trip, may try one of these suggestions since I've not spent a lot of time in this part of the city to get to know it better. Again, thanks!
Thank you for this great information on hospitality ...That was my best days when I had spent my days on Restaurant Byron Bay
We spent our trip at the Muse in Times Square. Perfect for what we wanted and the hotel was gorgeous. SO so gorgeous.
Yes i agree. the bathtub looks impossible but it was a big WOW. When i visit NY, i will go to one of them. Nice post actually. I love your blog.. Keep it up and hoping to read more from you.
Hi,
Thanks for informing about these great hotels, which have their own distinctive class and style. These hotels can make anyone feel pleased with his/her choice. The atmosphere of such hotels is vibrant with different kinds of furnishings and artifacts.

Hostel Rio De Janeiro
it's a very vital information provided..these pictures look very nice..anybody planning to spend their vacation in New York should really try this..
I'm planning to travel to London for a business meeting and I'm trying to decide where to stay. I got cheap tickets, but the hotel fees are so expensive!
414 Hotel. 414 W. 46th St. Great location in midtown Manhattan. We stayed there for less than $200 on a weekend. Tiny rooms but decorated tastefully. plus there is an amazing courtyard between the main building and their back building.
That was a day full of yummy foods ,We all had that on Restaurant Coolangatta with friends and families...Thanks for that great days
I haven't read all the other comments, but the library hotel looks SO AWESOME. It's got library themed floors and rooms. I'd stay on lvl 7, the arts floor and stay in the photography room! SWOON.
The Bowery Hotel is fantastic.
Nice guidance posted by author..will always kept all things in mind when we go to any reputed hotels.
Its really yummy..... Perfect cooking and serving are two sides of the same coin.If both are present then your holiday evening will be top of the world. thanks ....Restaurant CoolangattaThank you.

Broadbeach is the destination of Queensland’s largest shopping centers, casinos. You can enjoy the soothing breeze of the ocean or can go for along walk in an uninterrupted stretch of golden sand or can go for surfing, or in other words its climate is simply superb. Regarding its location it is just 1hr by road (100 km) from Brisbane the capital of the state Queensland. Restaurant Byron Bay
