New Zealand in the 1960s

My grandparents lived in England almost all their lives, but in 1955 they moved around the world to New Zealand for six years. At the time, they had three little kids--my dad, the oldest, was just four years old. "We wanted to get out of post-war Europe," my dad remembers. "New Zealand was full of sunshine and light."
My aunt found some old family photographs (on slides) recently, and they're amazing for us to look through. "It was fantastic, just fabulous," remembers my dad. "Sailing, surfing, beaches, mountains, the most glorious place for outside living."
My grandfather got a job at the University of Christchurch, and the family lived in a little bungalow. We looked up their address on Google maps!  9 Champion St, Christchurch, New Zealand. So cool to see the actual street.
I asked my dad when he remembered about their time there, and he said, "We ate a lot of lamb. We'd buy half a sheep a week, which cost one pound. We'd get a shoulder, a leg, lamb chops, kidneys. The next Saturday, we'd get another half sheep! A half sheep would do it."
"We also had a pet lamb in the backyard," he said, "A family friend of ours was named Angus Lamb (a real person), so when we got an actual lamb, of course we called him Angus!"
During their six years in New Zealand, my grandmother had a fourth baby there--my aunt Lulu.
My dad, who was five in these christening photos, is wearing his red school uniform. "One thing (that still happens in old-fashioned families) is that English boys wear their school uniform when they want to look 'smart,' " said my aunt.
Here, they were on vacation at The Hermitage Hotel, which had just been built. "It was state of the art," said my dad, "Glorious big windows, modern, exciting. We usually camped, so this was quite a treat." My aunt Jackie, who is the little girl in this photo, remembers: "I remember swearing and my dad made me apologize to the manager. We skated on the wood floors in our socks, and saw snow for the first time. I was not allowed up the glacier, which really riled me; I was too small."
I think my dad looks just like Toby here!
New Zealand looks incredible! What an adventure! xoxo

Ohhh, it looks amazing! Feeling especially wistful looking at these images, as I've been planning to make the move from England to NZ myself! Unfortunately, I can't get a work visa (new graduate in an "unskilled" occupation - I'm an economist!) so I have to hold out until the next batch of silver fern visas come out.

The photo of the hotel window is fantastic; what a view!

So true about English boys being made to wear their school uniform when they need to look smart! My poor brother had to wear his school uniform (complete with cute little cap) to all our family weddings and christenings. I'd never thought before that it was odd, but you're right, it is! Love these old technicolour photos. x

That looks fantastic! Out of curiosity.. Do you and Alex consider living abroad? Your father lived abroad as a child and so did you.. Is that an experience you want to recreate for Toby?

Funny! I grew up in various houses in Havelock North, Hawkes Bay, NZ. We, too, had a pet ram called Angus. Hawkes Bay is known as Wine Country (one of the many great wine regions of NZ).

And yes The Hermitage IS fantastic. Especially when one stops by in the middle of a camper van trip (four fully grown adults in a confined space).

My trips down to the South Island have been incredible. Yes, we are isolated (bar to Australians and Pacific Islanders) but it's worth the trip. Come on down.

Hi Joannna,
I live in Christchurch, NZ and I read your blog every day so how cool was it this morning when I saw your photos! Christchurch is a very different city right now, not only because of the growth and change from when your father and family lived here, but also because one year and two days ago we experienced a 7.1 earthquake. Six months later on Feb 22nd 2011 we experienced a devastating 6.3 aftershock that killed over 130 people and has robbed over 10,000 people of their homes. It has changed all of our lives in a single moment. We have lost our inner city and some suburbs will revert back to nature. People are sharing houses, using port-a-loos but in a crazy way we are also excited. We have the unique opportunity to build a new city! So our architects, designers, engineers, artists, business people, students, and we the residents are all considering the future and a new Christchurch. Aspects of your family’s NZ experience – a friendly community, the great outdoors, family life, ‘sunshine and light’…. We all appreciate it a bit more now. Thank you for sharing your family photos and for your blog. It’s a bit topsy turvy reading about autumn when we are excited about spring lambs and daffodils but I love my daily dose of cupof jo!

It's so lovely to see these photos - full of hope and sunshine - everyone looks so happy! My grandmother lived in Australia for a few years when she was a child (around 1900) and I remember her stories (told to me when she was in her 80s and 90s) about having had an octopus climb on her arm and it squirting ink on her! - so exotic! and photos of her scampering around in bare feet which would never have done at home in the UK.

Er, not that New Zealand and Aus are the same, but a similar sense of space, nature and freedom to English eyes!

Thank you so much for posting those old pictures of your family in New Zealand.

I am from New Zealand too. I used to live in the inner city of Christchurch. I moved to live in the beautiful Queenstown, South Island, after the devastating earthquake. I was working at the hospital when the 6.3mag hit as I was about to finish my duty at 1pm and was busy writing medical notes. It was a very tough decision to make and finally I had to say goodbye to all my friends, neighbors and colleagues. I am feel so happy here in Queenstown. The stunning scenery of the lakes and mountains just blew me away - can't get enough of them. I love the lifestyle here, the space, the fresh air, the people, the beauty of New Zealand, sigh, I love NZ always.

Aww, Joanna I love this post!

Agree with all the other comments about the remarkable colour and clarity of these pictures - go, slide film!!

I am an Australian living in Brisbane but have been to NZ three times...and I'll just keep going back!

It is a magical place! Most recently, I spent my honeymoon in the South Island last November...best holiday ever.

Such a wild, pure landscape...and super friendly folks :)

You should visit one day!
