Fall trend #3: Plaid plaid plaid

Plaid is everywhere this fall. It reminds me of my Michigan days wearing flannels to the cider mill (and getting cinnamon donuts). There's nothing cuter and cozier than a guy or girl in checks; you just want to cuddle up with them. :) Will you wear plaid this fall?

Here are some adorable plaid pieces: a shirt, wool skirt, shirtdress, bomber jacket, cape and 1920's hat.

For some reason, just looking at plaid flannel makes me feel warmer. These are great city looks and way to make the fabric look urban!

i was thinking plaid! but i'm always thinking plaid. what do you think about fair isle this year? i'm looking for it.

I love plaid...very preppy and Fall-like.

Side note: it's amazing to me how often that first French woman's picture is used as a fashion example. I think she looks cat-lady-kooky.

Ooh those cable-knit tights are too much! The only less-than-stellar thing about living in LA is that I probably will not be able to wear cold-weather items like that anymore. C'est la vie. I'd take endless amounts of sunshine any day :)

I sooo lived in Michigan as a kid and I sooooooo went to the cider mill!

I love plaid - and those cable knit tights are gorgeous! I wish it was colder already x

Oh yes, it looks so cozy and zara has the most adorable short plaid jacket with cute buttons:) Kisses

a big resounding 'yes' for plaid :)
madewell has a cute dress i've been admiring; tomboyish + feminine at the same time.

oh yes! is this the dress? http://goo.gl/hlQRM

adorable.

I'm so glad to see plaid making a comeback!! :) Definitely the best part about fall...aside from the donuts, of course!

I'm with tee! That first photo is awful, IMO. But the rest of it I like. Plaid reminds me of camping in high school and also grunge. One good, one bad. So I'm torn on whether I'll wear it.

Katie said...

I love plaid, but it's a shame to post a picture of a girl smoking.

I have an irish hubby, PLAID IS ALWAYS IN!

joanna, that is the dress :) {i didn't see you had linked up to it!}. i love the comfy-looking boots the model is wearing with the dress too.

First model is cute but the cigarette accessory is not cool. Smoking is gross.

I love it! I feel like this has been trendy in Seattle for like, fifteen years. :-)

i love that last girl in flannel! she looks so cozy and cute.

I LOVE plaid! I think I fell in love about 4-5 years ago, I needed a cooling off period after 12 years of wearing plaid uniforms in school. I especially like all those coats, the men's make me want to cuddle up or borrow them!

Caitlin Szabo said...

i'm really thinking a plaid coat this season. soo cozy!

as much as i don't like the weather getting colder, i love busting out fall clothes- like plaid skirts and tights :0)

that first woman looked pregnant to me and i did a double take at her cigarette.

This is the coziest trend in the world. Can't wait to bundle up in plaid all fall/winter!

I am loving this trend - it is so in touch with my home roots of northern MN!
Much love,

Joanna Goddard said...

anonymous, i think she just had a cute belly :) maybe from a delicious french lunch.

Joanna Goddard said...

haha, anita, seattle has been leading the pack! :)

Merrilyn said...

Just like the previous commenter, I, too, thought the model in the first picture was pregnant when I glanced at it. But I wish they wouldn't have pictured her smoking at all. I don't think it's a habit to be glamorized, ESPECIALLY if she is pregnant.

I find it hard to get into these fall/winter trends too much, though. It's still in the 90s here in Florida, and it won't be cool enough to wear much of it until November, at least.

Fellow Michigan girl here (woot, woot! :). You've captured the feeling here today, spot on! I'm located in the metro Detroit area, and there's that lovely, cool, crisp feeling in the air today, meaning perfect weather for my plaid flannels & cozy sweaters.

P.s.
J'adore the cider mill & the cinnamon doughnuts--I've been craving them for weeks!

Jennifer King said...

Yes, to plaid. Great round up of photos. I like the first girl in her plaid with cable knit tights.

Giulia Doyle said...

Just a little plaid, not too much. We don't want to epitomize the Canadian Lumberjack look.
First girl does look pregnant and the cigarette is not very cool.

clementimes said...

She totally looks preggo! Look at that round belly...

Luli said...

I'm not a fan of plaid, but it sure looks good on that girl, but the cigarette has got to go. I didn't realize they were still considered fashionable for today's fashion pics.

Lindsay R said...

okay i was gonna say the same thing about her being pregnant.
BUT that is besides the point:
Plaid is fabulous! I'm so excited to wear it. thanks for highlighting it.

mmmm totally distracted by the thought of cider donuts! xo

I always wore my dad's plaid jacket, it had a nylon quilted liner and smelled like grease and cigarettes. I loved it.

p.s. she's not pregnant, they tackled that on the sartorialist.

I'm not a huge fan on plaid, although maybe I'll branch out and try something new this fall! Seasons are always for starting something new!

I am such a huge fan of plaid! I love your picks, especially that Madewell dress. For as long as I've known him, my boyfriend has lived in flannels whenever the weather allows so I think plaid just reminds me of him and makes me feel sentimental and cozy. Then again, it could just be because I'm from Michigan, too. :) Happy Thursday!

Holly said...

i loove that brown plain jacket in the last photo!! do you know where its from?

I wear my family's tartan blanket as a wrap when the weather gets cooler and use a kilt pin to fasten it like a cape. I love it and it's versatile enough that I can carry my son and wrap it around the both of us! I am also one of those people who LOVES the tactile sensation of raw wool against my skin. My husband squirms when he sees me wearing it!

ASOS has some great tartan items!! http://www.asos.com/search/tartan?hrd=1&q=tartan

Bugsy said...

Oh wow, those people are plaiding so hard!

Hannah Joy said...

Oh my gosh! The plaid totally takes me back! I worked at an amazing cider mill in Michigan from my teens through grad school and there is nothing like the smell of cider and cinnamon donuts! In fact, we're having them at our wedding next month!! xo

Never thought that plaid would make its way back into my wardrobe, since the grungy Marc Jacobs days, but now it's a totally good go-to!

Kristin said...

yes yes yes! totally loving plaid and smiling because it makes me think of my grandpas. i can't think of another fabric that evokes as much emotion and memories in me as plaid.

Bronwyn said...

I love plaid! It definitely does feel outdoors-ey and fall-like (my dad was a boy scout, so I think of woodsmoke and hiking in New England). I'm also going to college as a freshman in Portland, OR, so there's an awful lot of plaid around here... and nature, so that's pretty excellent.
Though I don't believe I've ever been to a cider mill.

I remember this look from my Michigan (U of M) days! Ralph Lauren plaid shirts, skinny jeans (not really skinny but pegged of course), work boots and of course the hair clip! Does this mean the trend has circled back and I'm too old to wear it?

Plaid, for sure. It reminds me of when I was 13/14 in highschool. It was all the rage then. Nashville chic.

I'm so glad I am not the only one with a comment about the cigarette. I love fashion and I love art, but the cigarette made me ignore everything else about the photo and the fashion. Though on second glance, I like the tights. But the cigarette is just gross — French or not. xo

Joanna, I have to thank you! I have been looking for a capelet for AGES, and when I clicked on the cape, and found the plaid one, I thought "yeah, that's cute". But THEN, I saw the deep red one and it's exactly what I've been looking for! Little Red Riding Hood, here I come! Thank you for your sleuthing!

PS: If you have any leads on chic tweed blazers that come in plus sizes I will love you forever :P

fleur_delicious said...

yes! I LOVE plaid. In fact, I have some remnant ralph lauren shirting fabric in his classic red plaid - I was just thinking this morning that I should do up Colette Patterns' newest (fall 2011) blouse design in it, with a cute little tie-collar, wouldn't that be sweet? =)

now that i'm on my way to a healthy weight, i might incorporate plaids into my wardrobe. (only 10 1/2 pounds to go!)

KatyB said...

The skirt you pointed out is perfect. I'm having trouble in general with the men-inspired looks this season since my body type (and personality) are super feminine! What a great solution.

abby said...

definitely. It is so classic and friendly. Even this summer, I could be found in plaid from time to time. In high school, I worked at a coffee shop where we were REQUIRED to wear plaid shirts - the shirt of our choosing as long as it was plaid - and it seemed so odd to me at the time. Now it makes me smile to think back, as I totally understand the image they were trying to convey. Casual, classic, comfortable and friendly - even sort of timeless.

Uh, I totally will be even though I live in the desert (a very short stay guaranteed). Reading this so reminded of my college days in Indiana cuddling up in my flannel coats on those crisp fall morning and cool winter nights!!!

Some super cool girls in those photos, I think they would look great in anything though! Loving the plaid 1920's cloche hat.

I love plaid! Especially on a thick wool skirt or jacket. I may start looking for a classic flannel shirt for this season...takes me back to junior high (but I think I look much better now!). ;)

Don't think anything can top plaid. I don't know what kind of patterns tops next, gingham or tartan.

I love red plaid! BUT that first woman's photo does NOT inspire me. Is it just me, or does she look a little bit pregnant and she's SMOKING???

Nomadic D. said...

I will be wearing plaid this fall and every fall probably for the rest of my life. There really is nothing like a good plaid shirt, and if it's flannel for winter, even better. Some of my favorites are pulled from my mom's closet from 40 years ago, but I've also found great affordable ones at Urban Outfitters. I don't think it's something you need to pay a ton of money for. In fact, I just found these great ones at Woolrich:

plaid is cozy! that rubbish plaid bomber jacket would be perfect for afternoon walks to the park. (i've got to agree with the anti-smoking voices, too, though; smoking, even in paris, isn't healthy or stylish...love the look of the tights and the layers, but i'm totally distracted by the cigarette and baby bump.)
