Travel fantasy: Maine cottages

How's this for a romantic travel fantasy: A weekend at the Cabot Cove cottages in Kennebunkport, Maine. You stay in a private cottage, and breakfast arrives at your door each morning. For the rest of the day, you hike to lighthouses, swim, sail, go whale-watching, drink wine in Adirondack chairs, and eat lobster for dinner. Wouldn't you love to go with your partner? :)

P.S. Maine-scented perfume.

  2. We stayed there last fall and it's just the most perfect little place. For anyone making the trip, stop at Federal Jack's (http://www.federaljacks.com/). Delicious food and great beer.

Joanna, I know you don't mean to be exclusive or make readers feel alienated, and I know you support gay rights...but nearly every post this week has been written exclusively for straight girls. What if I want to go there not with "my man" but with my woman? What if I want to pick out a cute date night for my crush that's a "she" and not a he as you wrote. What if it's not George Clooney I wanna date but Ellen? This week of posts is kinda bumming me out.

  17. I love Maine. We had such a nice time there two summers ago. I would love to explore it more, and this looks like the perfect little escape.

Oh, and I remember that perfume post and it made me smile! I think we discussed what New York would smell like and decided it would be a mixture of smog and success? (I'm fully paraphrasing, but you get me;)

    xo...have an awesome weekend, Joanna!

ps: West Village is on the evac map, did you see? Stay safe.

Nothing beats the off season when you can cozy up in a sweatshirt and drink a coffee on your walk down to the water. And that perfume looks lovely!

I agree with anonymous #1. I'm straight and have found your language this week exclusive. Why not use words like "honey" or "sweetheart" which are gender neutral but still convey the same relationship excitement?

Using...for your man or woman... sounds better.
As for tailoring your blog to one group or more groups, I feel that is your choice, and I respect that.

I've never read you as being not including everyone, even when you say... with your man.

  60. I agree with Anonymous at 1pm - this raised a strange flag for me, too. Not all of your readers have or want men. Why use such exclusive language?

That being said, I'm planning a honeymoon to Maine with my partner, so keep these ideas coming please!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Joanna's language isn't necessarily exclusive, it's just her writing a blog about her life!

I love the post, I love the photo and I LOVE your blog! Keep up the amazing posts Joanna!

"This is her blog so she doesn't have to dance around every single word just to please every person."

Yup, agreed. You really aren't going to please everyone all the time and Joanna has proven her support of any type of relationship many times so I think we all need to respect her choice of words even if it's not what we would have written.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Anonymous6:11 PM

Agreed, Anonymous and Jennie. This weeks' postings have been shallow and alienating.

No mention of a potentially devastating hurricane, but you are asking if I sleep naked?

I guess you are trying to capture a different reader demographic after all the gay marriage flack?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Anonymous6:18 PM

Wow, really? I hate when people pick on other people for the way they've chosen to write their own blog. If you don't like it, don't read it. But no need to call it shallow and alienating. Joanna said she was going to do relationship posts all this week...and she has...and I think hundreds of readers have probably loved it. If I want to read about the hurricane, I'll check the news. A Cup of Jo regularly posts about world events but it's nice to have an escape from the devastation every once and a while. I think she's posting to the same demographic as always.

    ReplyDelete
  65. i would do anything to teleport to Maine with my guy right now! That sounds so amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Anonymous7:43 PM

I have no problem with the so-called "shallow" posts. This stuff is fun, and this is a website geared toward lighter topics. That's cool.

And of course anyone can write their blog in the way they want, but it's nice to think about everyone. It's not much different than if a blogger ended every post for a week by saying, "What do you think, White People?" Or, "So, Catholics, what's your opinion?" It makes a huge chunk of us say, "Huh...I guess I don't belong here." And I hope we all want to be better people than that. (I'm trying and failing all the time.)

That's why I raised the issue initially, just so Joanna (and all of us) would think about stuff like this. It's these little things that are a huge part in shifting our consciousness toward inclusiveness and civil rights.

  71. whoa, this looks amazing. i have actually been to Maine many times, and love it there. But i have gone with family and as a teenager in the past. Never like "on my own" as a married adult. My husband and I actually did not take a honeymoon right after we got married (Not enough time or money!) so we are postponing ours, and are talking about taking it this coming 2012 summer. We are torn between Alaska, Maine, Hawaii, and Nova Scotia (all different , i know!) If we end up going to Maine, this looks like THE perfect place!! Thanks for posting! :D

  80. I actually spent my honeymoon there last year (we celebrate our first anniversary in just a few weeks).

It was a lovely spot; the cottage was tiny and sweet (the owners are a bit crabby, but not enough to effect newlyweds), there were kayaks you could take up the Kennebunk River or close to the sea, and it was only a short walk into Kennebunkport.

I highly recommend a early autumn visit to Kennebunkport.

As a Mainer, I get right upset when people from away try to capture the essence of my homeland. I have never been told that my skin smells musky, sensual, or coupled with sun-dried grass. However, I do smell quite nectar like salted herring, sweat, and occasionally sun block and mulch.

    Sincerely,
GG - Captain of the F/V Sureshot

  82. I'm completely in love with Kennebunkport and love having this new, fun idea of a place to stay! Have you been to St. Anne's church (just down the road from these cottages)? It's one of the most beautiful places... a little stone church with old wooden pews... very dark with light coming in through small stained glass windows. It's romantic (is it weird to call a church romantic??). And make sure to go to Bartley's for some blueberry pie.. it's out of this world and you'll fall in love with Mrs. Bartley if you get a chance to meet her! :)

As I'm reading Maine, I'm getting hankerings to go back! Love that this post coincides with this.

  83. I was caught by the comments on this post because I was JUST thinking that this is my favorite blog.

I personally think you do a great job of showing who you are and what you stand for without revolving around a political or social agenda. While I can understand not excluding people, I think your posts are lovely and a reflection of who you are and what your own life entails (and not at all intentionally alienating). I'm not wanting to start a debate, but I'd love to request that you keep being you, while obviously being sensitive to your readers as I believe you are!

I gravitate toward your blog because I find much that relates to my life at this time, being a married mother who shares similar interests. I know you can't please everyone, but I wanted to let you know that I thoroughly enjoy your posts!

Cabot Cove Cottages were called "Sleepy Hollow Motor Court" when I stayed there in the 1960s and 70s. Then I saw that the units had "gone condo" and were selling for something like $500,000 each. That's what having a couple of former Presidents in town will do to property values.
