Yesterday I went to Terrain, the gorgeous home and garden shop in Pennsylvania, after being a fan for years. The grounds are stunning, and I learned that people spend an average of TWO HOURS browsing the shop! (On average!) But I wasn't surprised: The flowers, linens, mustards, cookbooks, everything are so beautiful. Here are the two things I splurged on:
A velvet pumpkin (with a real gourd stem) to put on our mantle this fall.
Black sea salt. Wouldn't it look cool on baked potatoes?Check out their online shop here, and thanks for the inspiration, Terrain!

that top picture is amazing!
ReplyDeletewhat brought you to PA, besides Terrian? You were only 20 minutes from where I live. :)
ReplyDeleteWow...what a beautiful place. Just looking at that top photo I can imagine spending a whole afternoon there. Beautiful!
ReplyDeletethat cottage is just delightful.
ReplyDeleteI live about 10 minutes away, and Terrain is my sanctuary. I always feel more relaxed after visiting!
ReplyDeleteAfter working for Anthro, I have always wanted to go to Terrain. Next time I'm in the NE. xoxo
ReplyDeleteBlack Hawaiian Sea Salt... how fascinating! I'd pair it with white ground pepper for a neat twist.
ReplyDeleteoh, I love their Antiqued Bird Birror!
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of black sea salt--you should try Trader Joe's dark chocolate bar with caramel and black sea salt. It's amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteSo awesome! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI love it! Terrain is right near where I grew up. Did you happen to hear whether they still do weddings/rehearsals? :-) :-) :-)
ReplyDeleteI love Terrain! My mom and I try to visit at least once during each different season. I always get a little sad when its time to leave. :)
ReplyDeleteI can see how shoppers spend an average of two hours browsing - it looks so lovely. I looove the velvet pumpkin. =)

I love sotres like this with so many fun trinkets! I could browse for hours!
ReplyDeleteI adore Terrain. One hundred percent obsessed. And since I moved to New York, I miss it so!
ReplyDelete@CC--They DO do weddings and private events there! Have to be after 5 so it doesn't interfere with their store hours.
Joanna, did you eat at the cafe? I'm hungry just thinking of it.
I'm lucky enough to live close by to this pretty shop, they change every season and you can take classes there ( I still have to do this). The cafe is amazing, I recommend the cheese platter...oh and the elderberry spritzer!
ReplyDeleteoh, this makes me crave fall! And trips to a local orchard. Looks like you had a good time.
ReplyDeleteI live so close to Terrain! I try not to go there often, because I could wander around for hours. Like Anthro, it is wonderful inspiration, even if I can't bring myself to pay their prices.
ReplyDeleteI keep hearing people talk about the Terrain, I want to go so bad! Thanks for posting the link for the shop!
ReplyDeletegreat your blog, nice to meet your blog!
ReplyDeletexx
oh my gosh, I was there yesterday too! I might have seen your photog? We always go there when we need a little pick-me-up, revival type thing... we used it as part of our impromptu date/picnic we took our 9 month on yesterday... the store really is lovely!
ReplyDeletewe bought this AMAZING bee bible- as a housewarming gift for my twin brother and his wife. so many great gifts! I received an amazing woven scarf from their for my first mother's day this year (after some strong hints!).

ReplyDeleteLush! xx
ReplyDeleteOooh.
ReplyDeleteThe pumpkin.
I'm very lucky to live a short drive from there, and my sister and I go a few times a year for inspiration and to splurge. If you didn't, the next time you go make sure to eat in the cafe. It's so wonderful to sit, relax, and eat amongst the plants.
ReplyDeleteLove everthing you bought! Good choices!
ReplyDeleteps-Haven't seen any pics of Toby in a while (ok, a week)...how is the little man doing? :)
Terrain is one of my favorite places, my husband and I go there almost every weekend. Sometimes we buy things and sometimes we just soak in everything and just enjoy being there. I picked up the salt water soap too. I love the smell and the packaging....so cute I might not be able to ever use it. Next time you go for visit you must try out the cafe! It is so delicious. They serve fresh warm bread in flower pots with flavored butter topped with a little bit of fancy salt!
ReplyDeleteAmazing finds Joanna! I kind of want them all. May have to make a special trip to terrain this fall.
ReplyDeletei saw this on the rockstar diaries blog a few weeks back and i was so intrigued. now i'm even more so! that pumpkin makes me excited for fall already.
ReplyDeleteyou'll love the black salt. it's excellent on pasta and meat dishes. i like to slice an avacado in half, sprinkle it with a fancy salt, and just dive in with a fork. makes a great snack. cheers!
ReplyDeleteI love Terrain...it reminds me of going to my mother's house when I was in university. I could "shop" there & her house was very much like it. No longer. Alas.
ReplyDeleteThe sea salt is superb & yes, it will look cool on baked taters.
And...yay for PA!
So jealous! I am dying to get there. That pumpkin is amazing and the pics are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness Joanna! I'm in love with Terrain also. I lived in Philadelphia for years, and this opened just before I moved a way. I want everything in the shop for my home and food blog. Your blog is so inspiring, thank you for your everyday ideas. I totally wish I could be your intern this Fall, but I live in Portland, Oregon. Thanks for making me smile!
ReplyDeleteSarah
The black sea salt is amazing sprinkled on fudge brownies or dark chocolate!
ReplyDeleteThat's such a wonderful store. And that first photo looks exactly like the homes in Mendocino California, such a beautiful place (yup, don't mind me I'm just reminiscing)!
ReplyDeleteI love Terrain, I only live about 10 minutes away. I try to limit going, to tempted to spend spend spend on all the wonderful things there.
ReplyDeleteIs black sea salt the one that tastes like egg yolks? I tried it at a farmer's market and thought it'd be a great ingredient to have around for potato salad, especially if I'm bringing it to a gathering and who knows if someone has egg allergies? I was amazed at the distinct flavors of all the different colors of salt. And I just love that pumpkin!
ReplyDeleteI love there brunch! You should go back around Christmas time. :)
ReplyDeletep.s. i saw this birth announcement and thought you would dig it.

Wow..sounds like an awesome time. I LOVE shopping.
ReplyDeleteA couple years ago, I bought some black sea salt at Trader Joe's and I was surprised to find that it turned my fingers BLACK! Like, really black. As in, it-looks-like-I-rubbed-my-fingertips-on-ink kind of black. Consider yourself warned! 8-) That said, the flavor is really wonderful - it seems to have a more mineral, rocky flavor than other salts, I think.
ReplyDeleteThe pumpkin is darling!
Very nice shopping selections - love the pumpkin! Terrain HAS to be a wonderful place.
ReplyDeleteOooh... Love it! I totally just bought a dark chocolate caramel bar with black hawaiian sea salt in it yesterday! Yummy! Has a sort of smoky taste!
ReplyDeleteCC, yes!!! they still do weddings. the restaurants is GORGEOUS!!!!!
ReplyDeleteoooh, rachael, i'm not sure if it tastes like egg yolks--can't wait to try it tonite!

ReplyDeleteabigail, i can't believe you were there, too!!!!! i would have loved to meet you. and Chrissee, i just went to spend the day at Terrain; we met a bunch of the people who work there and we had lunch and dinner in their delicious cafe. it was such a haven, i wish i lived closer, you are so lucky!! xo
ReplyDeletelaco, that birth announcement is so cute :)
ReplyDeleteI went to Terrain for the first time earlier this summer right after your giveaway from them. Did you know they are owned by the Anthro/Urban Outfitters guy? It looks like an Anthro for the gardeners of the world. Such a beautiful place!
ReplyDeleteI love the handmade velvet pumpkin - where can I find these in the UK : ) Maybe I will try making.
ReplyDeletehttp://sisterbatik.blogspot.com/
Also, the black sea salt - how delicious for the eyes too.
I love the velvet pumpkins! I actually used a variety of small ones as the topper for our wedding cake. And the woman who started making these pumpkins used to give them as gifts to friends, but when the economic crisis hit, her husband lost his job and she started this velvet pumpkin business. Which I'm beyond happy to hear has been doing very well! It's lovely how ingenious people can be!
ReplyDeleteSo lovely! I'm loving that velvet pumpkin! xo
ReplyDeleteWe recently were looking at all the different colors of salt at the grocery store. Pink sea salt was my favorite! Have a wonderful day.

I'm a big fan of using black sea salt to salt the rim of margaritas (extra points for muddling a little cilantro and jalapeno with the lime- so good!).
ReplyDeleteJoanna i have seen their website before and always wanted to go there. I called the number once from their website and the woman on the phone told me there wasn't a terrain store that it was only online!! My husbands family is in PA and we are there a lot so i would LOVE to know where it is located. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI could spend all day here, love that little pumpkin!

What a pitty its so far from Budapest!
ReplyDeleteLove that velvet pumpkin!
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely store! It must be great going instead of just browsing on the internet!

ReplyDeleteI love Terrain! I think I would have splurged on that velvet pumpkin, too. I may still...
ReplyDeletethat shop is incredible, i need to go back!
ReplyDeleteLook at you in PA! One of things I asked for my birthday this year was to hang out Terrain for as long as I wanted with no complaints from the boyfriend while I wander for hours.
ReplyDeleteBlack sea salt is amazing. When I make lobster raviolis, I only put a drizzle of lemon infused olive oil and a bit of Hawaiian sea salt of top : delicious!
ReplyDeleteJoanna,
ReplyDeleteIf this was a free trip, and you received free food and drink, spa treatments, a terrarium class, and other perks, you need to disclose that. This sounds as if you just picked up and went there on your own. According to OhJoy!, they invited bloggers there for the day. As a reader, I want to know what you received as a gift and what you paid for out of your on pocket.
Amazing! I am going to have to control myself from not spending all my money on their online shop! Thanks for the great post!
ReplyDeleteI love Terrain!! I can spend hours on their online shop drooling over the most gorgeous products!
ReplyDeleteI don't live that far from Terrain, but somehow I didn't know about it? Although that might have been a good thing....not sure if I should thank you for introducing us or if I should be mad at you for it! ;)
ReplyDeleteI know, isn't it gorgeous! I swear I could live there! I was there back in June...here's where I blogged about it: http://what-the-font.blogspot.com/2011/06/terrain-at-styers.html
ReplyDelete:)
I would love to know where in PA this is!!!? Can someone let me know? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAshley

ReplyDeleteWow! I just added this to my list of places to visit. So gorgeous. Thanks for the post.
ReplyDeleteI love terrain, it's especially lovely around holidays. Can you believe that Urban Outfitters Inc was originally going to make it into a chain, if only?!
