What are you guys doing this weekend? We're heading to Michigan to visit my parents. My mom is making grilled shrimp (per request:) and Alex is psyched to go on a driving tour of Detroit. Hope you have a great weekend, and here are a few fun posts from around the web...Do or don't: A braid bar. Genius or a rip off? It lasts for 96 hours!
Love this museum photo.
I'm starting two new books: Maine and The Help. (Have you read either?)
Another amazing pre-wedding photo, where the bride and groom didn't actually see each other!
The most flattering underwear.
Kind of dying to hang this rad print in our apartment.
Suitcase eyes!
London sky orchestra. Breathtaking.
How to navigate a bathroom while wearing a romper. Hilarious.
Heartbreaking.
Love the idea of photo return-address labels. (FYI, the link takes a second.)
Dancer vs. ballerina.
Shark week awesomeness.
Have a good one, my darlings! xo

Fun times! Where in Michigan are you from? My fiance is from the Detroit area too!
ReplyDeletesounds like a blast!
ReplyDeleteLoved reading The Help,
ReplyDeletexo Jana
is that judd apatow photo really from amy's website? i was actually dying to find out the source!
ReplyDeleteOoh, have fun!
ReplyDeleteI have a family reunion to go to on Saturday, as well as my usual trip to the farmers' market. :-)
the help is a wonderful read! enjoy your weekend ;)
ReplyDeleteI think the image's link is wrong...
ReplyDeleteJust finished The Help - couldn't put it down. Enjoy your travels.
ReplyDeletelooooved the help! and hear the movie is coming out this fall, so perfect timing on hitting the book first!
ReplyDeleteHave fun in the Mitten, Joanna! I am going to Michigan next week for my baby shower (I grew up in Plymouth and my family still lives there). I can't wait to go home for a bit!
ReplyDeleteRead the Help & Maine! You'll love them both!
ReplyDeleteThe Help is fantastic! Really hard to put down once you pick it up. Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteI loved both The Help and Maine (and then devored Commencement- another novel by J Courtney Smith). Last summer's favorite was Olive Kitteridge. Enjoy!!
ReplyDeleteAs a former Michigander myself I really want to tell you about two wonderful new books that I read this summer that both took place in Michigan. I can't stop thinking about them! Both received great reviews, Today Show and Matchbook Magazine, among others. South of Superior by Ellen Airgood and Once Upon a River by Bonnie Jo Campbell. I don't think you would be disappointed!
ReplyDeleteI just finished "The Help" on only two days! Clear your weekend, you won't be able to stop reading it!
ReplyDeleteOh enjoy Michigan! Don't miss the Boston-Edison district on your tour...some of the city's most gorgeous architecture is found in the turn-of-the-century mansions. (I live in Royal Oak just north of the city, and I never miss a drive through Boston-Edison when I go downtown!)
ReplyDeleteLoved the Help and just read Commencement (Smith's 1st book). Let me know how you like Maine!
ReplyDeleteP.S. So glad you featured Lamott's book Monday - I read it just after my son was born, often while breastfeeding!
I read the help years ago and of course LOVED it, I'm yet to come across anyone who hadn't, it's so good I'm alittle axious they might screw it up in the movie, being from Australia I fount the southern accent in words a little hard to take by chapter trout was one of my favorite things.
ReplyDeletePs that print is pretty rad.
The Help is one of the greatest books I've read in a while, I can't wait for the movie! xo
ReplyDeleteHave so much fun this weekend!
ReplyDeleteAs for me.. I'll be catching up on sleep, having a glass (or two) of red wine, and preparing for my trip home to Dallas next week.
And I couldn't be happier.
I have read both...The Help was awesome..Maine...still trying to figure it out! We don't have a lot going on this weekend! Enjoy yours!
ReplyDeletePS: I read History of Love...and was intrigued...another mind stretcher!
The Help is aaaaamazing. I'm sure the movie will be too! Have fun in Michigan!
ReplyDeleteWhat I would give to read The Help over again for the first time!!! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThe Help is an awesome book. I am looking forward to the movie!
ReplyDeleteHave a great wknd!
I am also on my way home for a visit :) Can't wait to see my Mom!

have a wonderful weekend!!

loved the Nick ad so much, and I've read a lot of good reviews about the help , enjoy :)
ReplyDeletehttp://girlynote.blogspot.com/
ok, not sure why, but this was one of my favorite weekend posts of yours! balloon music? dancers? undies! oy!
ReplyDeleteThe Help was a great read! You'll love it!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy visiting your mama!
Love seeing another pre-wedding photo - such a great idea!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to being lost in quilting over the weekend, as well as finishing up an LOTR movie marathon with family.
Happy weekend to you!
Katherine @ thistle handmade
I work/go to school in the D. Love it.
ReplyDeleteHave lotsa fun. I am always looking forward to your Monday post. :)
I loved The Help, but I read it a couple of years ago before the hype (have heard that hurts it -- though I cant imagine).
ReplyDeleteI've heard only great things about Maine - but haven't picked it up yet (thought I love Maine and all things Maine!).
I just picked up Rules of Civility -- a review copy that has been waiting to be read -- the deadline is coming for the review, so I made myself pick it up thinking it might be a chore. Couldn't put it back down!! Actually thought of you (not that I know you) and others from NYC. It's NYC in the 1930's (why I thought of you, right?) and it's SO good. I think it is actually now available for everyone... not quite done but so far I highly recommend it!
I agree with everyone's comments about The Help and I think Kathryn Stockett does an amazing job with first person. She makes each voice believable as the chapters switch between three very different women.
ReplyDeletei will offer another opinion: i found the help to be stereotypical and condescending. it involves simply wrought characters who fill easily constructed roles.
ReplyDeletefor a subject matter of such importance, i expected more of the writing and craftsmanship. may you enjoy the book, but may you also see through the shoddy construction.
I'm also from Metro Detroit and would like to know where you and your family are from!! Enjoy Detroit!
ReplyDeleteI'm happy you went back to no page breaks, Joanna! You write beautifully and there is no need to hide it ;)
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think the braid bar is a rip off. After one night of dancing I am ready to take a shower and wash off the sweat and dirt of the day. But pool dips and hot summer activities...for days? ick..
love that picture! so adorable :)
ReplyDeleteYou always have the best weekend links!! Thank you!!
ReplyDeletehttp://elizaoverthemoon.blogspot.com
That first wedding sight is too sweet! Enjoy Michigan...perfect time of year to be there!
ReplyDeleteSounds wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI am so excited about this post! My fiance (very soon to be husband - Aug 14) and I are both from Metro Detroit and currently live in Plymouth. I hope that you have a fantastic weekend here in the D. I wish there were a way to sneak you guys into the Detroit Athletic Club, where I'm a chef, to get you in for a fancy-schmansy dinner.
ReplyDeleteIf you have time to stop in Detroit at all... head to Café Cadeux for some feather bowling! It is a blast :)
Best,
Pia
Awesome, I already adore you. My bestfriend told me to check our you blog and I'm so glad I have.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed The Help! I can't wait to see it out in the movies.
ReplyDeleteThe return address labels are beautiful. Too bad I cannot order from abroad. =(
I read The Help a couple of months ago and loved it. It was one of those books that kept me up at night saying "just one more page..."
ReplyDeleteI laughed out loud reading the post about navigating a bathroom when wearing a romper. I've worn one out of the house exactly twice in my life. I would wear them more but that exact scenario always prevents me from doing so. Hilarious!
ReplyDeletegood lord. $45 for a braid? It took me a few days to learn to french braid my own hair when I was 6. The idea of paying someone else to give me braids is laughable.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you will be having a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteI am taking my youngest to an adventure holiday this week end. (she will be learning to drive too, not bad for a 15 year old!)
Loved the wedding photo, how cute was that!
I have to say though that I don't think I would fork out that sort of money for a hair braid!
X x
I'm currently two-thirds of the way through The Help and loving it! A great read.
ReplyDeleteThe Help, yes, an absolute must.
ReplyDeleteI want to read Maine as well.
20×200 is one of the best concepts for art collecting yet. I love the print you featured. Ha!
Eat some shrimp for me.
I LOVED Maine. So good. xo
ReplyDeletei love that photo. michael cera is my fav of all favs!
ReplyDeleteI loved reading "The Help". I was afraid the book would try too hard to be heart-warming (I hate that in books and movies), but it was so effortless, funny, and with the most real characters I've ever read. I read it in 3 days.
ReplyDeleteI have read The Help and I loved it! It made me laugh out loud and also cry for the injustices done to the African American women and people in the southern American States as well as all women who aren't as traditionally beautiful or willing to go with the "norm" that society plagues them with.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading The Help right now and absolutely love it! I hope you will enjoy it! And that you have a relaxing weekend :)
ReplyDeleteThe Help is really good. I was hooked and could not wait to hear what was going on with all of the other characters. I think you will like it.
ReplyDeleteah - i just blogged about my love for the help. Its great, read "one day" too!!

I'm from Maine and I definitely want to pick up 'Maine' soon. Let me know what you think! (krileywriter@gmail.com)
ReplyDeletehave a great weekend! love the romper article. so true!!! such a pain and i discovered not good when it's a single bathroom and you have a line of women waiting for you to exit.
ReplyDeleteI have The Help but haven't started it yet.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED the dancer vs. Ballerina ad!!
I think I'd pay $45 for a braid 'do like that, if it was for a special event or something.
Loved all these funny blog posts. Thanks for sharing! I really needed to sheer up! Have a lovely weekend!
ReplyDeleteenjoy your mama made shrimp!! :)
ReplyDeletehttp://xoxo-carolinalove.blogspot.com
I loved The Help--I am really hoping the movie will do it justice!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the book ideas. Though I have never visited Maine, I have a strange obsession with it. I'll definitely be checking it out. As far as summer reading goes, my old stand by is Summer Sisters by Judy Blume.
ReplyDeleteGreat links. Highly recommend The Help, and I also just bought it as an audio book to listen to over winter evenings.
ReplyDeleteI think the braid bar might be worth the money if you wanted to use the hairstyle for an event, maybe a party or something, but otherwise not so much. The Help is an incredible book, I read it and listened to the audio book and both were great! I'm looking forward to the movie too!
ReplyDeleteI write about everything great about Michigan at my blog, iheartmi.blogspot.com. I hope you LOVE your visit!
ReplyDeleteyou always find the coolest links. that london sky orchestra thing is beautiful. such a pleasant way to bring beauty to a city.
ReplyDeleteLoved the dancer vs ballerina ad. Lovely to watch.
ReplyDeleteAnd that photo and the words really are so heartbreaking. Gave me goosebumps.
I'm from the Detroit metro-area! Sorry for the bad weather; the mugginess makes me want to kill myself, but as a Michigan gurrrl I'm sure you're experienced in humidity. Have fun, Jo!
ReplyDeleteIf you are in the mood for some awesome BBQ while in Detroit, def check out Slows! Have a great trip!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend with the fam, Joanna! I was born and raised in the Detroit area and will be moving back there soon. My grandfather was the broadcaster for the Tigers for 42 years. Love your blog, esp. the updates on your precious little Toby!
ReplyDeleteI've read The Help and loved it! Such an inspiring story. You can read my review here: http://travelingthispath.blogspot.com/2011/06/help-by-kathryn-stockett.html
ReplyDeleteOooh I actually love that braid bar idea! I've seen a bunch of those "blow out" bars pop up, and I have felt kind of "meh" about them, since I know they wouldn't last in my hair for more than an evening. However: an intricate braid that might have staying power? Awesome!
ReplyDeleteI'm about halfway through "The Help," and I can't put it down!
ReplyDeleteHi Jo! Sounds like a wonderful weekend. I will have to try the braid and read The Help.
ReplyDeleteJust posted about our weekend, we have chosen to stay put. I am catching up on some writing, decorating and cleaning. Story of our lives, isn't it?
Plus I was able to change out the theme on my hallway table, slowly creeping into fall and much to soon. http://www.etsy.com/listing/78985232/rockin-bead-bracelets-round-turquoise-or
Have a great time!!
Texas Tales
I am just returning home to Michigan this weekend, too!
ReplyDeleteIf you are staying in the Detroit area, might I recommend you make a visit to the Cranbrook campus in Bloomfield Hills? I went to highschool there and it has unusually beautiful architecture, sculpture, and landscapes. Truly a sight to see in the area!
Have fun!
Have so much fun! The summers there are incredible, but I've heard it's a been a bit humid. I was born and raised in metro Detroit and can't wait to get back there soon :-)

And Cranbook is INCREDIBLE! Great suggestion REG!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a lot of fun

what is it with male significant others being so excited to drive through detroit? when i took my boyfriend to michigan from chicago, he was so excited to see detroit (though i am from further up north.)
ReplyDeleteMaine sounds SO good. i am currently waiting for it to get returned to my library :)
The Help was a great book! Excited for the movie.
ReplyDeleteBallerina!!! What extension!
ReplyDeleteThe Help is awesome. My grandmother and her sister remember growing up when "the help" had their own bathrooms, and they said the book pretty much got it right.
ReplyDeleteI love The Help, probably because I grew up with a nanny, and it hit home. I'm in my 20s, so it obviously wasn't during that time period, and my family didn't treat her poorly at all. She was a second mother to me!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog! Your husband and Toby are some lucky men!
I hope you had a great weekend with your family in Michigan.. :)
ReplyDeleteMore hugs,
Archiex@ Supermodel
Another great Dancer vs Ballerina video.. w/New York City Ballet's own Ashley Bouder and tWitch from So You Think You Can Dance. Enjoy!

Loved the book The Help. Movie out this month. Will download Maine. Thanks for the suggestion. It looks like good summer reading.

Love the braid bar! Wish we had one in Charlotte!

I read The Help. It was brilliant. Can't wait for the movie to come out.
ReplyDeleteI concur with everyone who's commented about The Help. An amazing book you won't be able to put down! Enjoy!
ReplyDelete-Mel
I read Maine and thought it was pretty empty and not nearly as good as the review the NY Times gave it. I thought it did not have well developed characters and was not well written. A good, vapid beach read if you are looking for that, though.
ReplyDeleteAww I love the pre wedding photo. The suitcase eyes rule too! x
ReplyDeletehttp://www.allykayler.blogspot.com
Yes! The Help is AMAZING! You will love it!!!
ReplyDeleteI think the return address labels are fantastic. Wouldn't they be cute for wedding thank-you notes?
ReplyDeleteoh i LOVE the shark week one....so good, especially the interview with the surfer!
ReplyDeleteHope you had fun! Love the links :) And that picture is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThat Duane Michals photo...
ReplyDeleteso cute!
ReplyDeletehappy week,
Rosa
Have fun in Detroit!! My hometown =)
ReplyDeleteanonymous, oh! no, i had the wrong photo credit -- it's from GQ, man of the year issue. :)
ReplyDeletewe're from rochester hills! i went to rochester adams high school. my dad still lives there, and my mom lives in bloomfield hills. :)
ReplyDeletethank you, anne!! the books sound GREAT!!
ReplyDeletelori, rats, i just saw your comment! we'll have to do that next time :)
ReplyDeletePia, that would have been amazing!! :) and i LOVE feather bowling, it is hilarious! so fun that so many readers are from michigan.
ReplyDeleteI read The Help - it is awesome. I couldn't put it down. Hopefully you find it as enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteIf you need another book once you're done with your two - try 'The Secret Life of Cee Cee Wilkes'. It was so amazing.
I read The Help and loved it. Can also recommend Pillars of the Earth in case you are still looking for a good book:)
ReplyDeleteI read The Help last summer and I loved it! I was a bit disappointed that there was a movie coming out and that Kristin Chenoweth wouldn't be playing Celia Foote(she would be perfect!).
ReplyDeletei can almost guarantee my hair would NOT look like that after sleeping on it or going swimming! when i swim my hair is a mess, and when i wake up i look like i was thrown in the dryer!
ReplyDeleteI've read both of those books this summer! They are wonderful!
ReplyDeleteJoanna, if you're ever in Seattle, I'd give you a french braid in any shape you like for free. Scout's honour! In fact, one night - true story! - I was at one of these chic speakeasy bars with my husband and some girlfriends. I had my own hair braided up around my head.I was downstairs in the line for the bathroom and this sweet girl complimented my hair. As she happened to be out celebrating her birthday, I told her when she came out I'd do her hair the same, if she wanted, right there at her table with her friends. She was so sweet, she bought me a chic cocktail for braiding her hair! Only in the northwest, eh? =)
ReplyDeleteI love that Hot Air Balloon video!! So much I even wrote a little story and posted it on my blog..
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
Tresordejour
I love The Help but did not like Maine. I kept waiting for something more to happen. I would be interested to hear what you think of it. In fact, my dislike of Maine is what inspired this blog post: http://www.mcmadness.com/2011/07/summer-book-list.html
ReplyDeleteThe romper "How-To" forgot one important piece: "Take off your underwear". Unless they assume that no one wears one when they wear a romper.
ReplyDeleteThe Help is wonderful. Almost done with it now!
ReplyDeleteAs for the photos on the address labels - seems like a super bad idea to me. That somebody could find my house AND know what I looked like. Nuh-uh.
This makes me think. I would love to see a pre-wedding photo where they are both blindfolded, but sneaking a last kiss before the ceremony ... <3
ReplyDeleteIt won't succeed as a matter of fact, that's exactly what I think.
ReplyDelete
