ReplyDeleteAs a former Michigander myself I really want to tell you about two wonderful new books that I read this summer that both took place in Michigan. I can't stop thinking about them! Both received great reviews, Today Show and Matchbook Magazine, among others. South of Superior by Ellen Airgood and Once Upon a River by Bonnie Jo Campbell. I don't think you would be disappointed!

ReplyDeleteOh enjoy Michigan! Don't miss the Boston-Edison district on your tour...some of the city's most gorgeous architecture is found in the turn-of-the-century mansions. (I live in Royal Oak just north of the city, and I never miss a drive through Boston-Edison when I go downtown!)

I read the help years ago and of course LOVED it, I'm yet to come across anyone who hadn't, it's so good I'm alittle axious they might screw it up in the movie, being from Australia I fount the southern accent in words a little hard to take by chapter trout was one of my favorite things.

I loved The Help, but I read it a couple of years ago before the hype (have heard that hurts it -- though I cant imagine).
ReplyDeleteI've heard only great things about Maine - but haven't picked it up yet (thought I love Maine and all things Maine!).
I just picked up Rules of Civility -- a review copy that has been waiting to be read -- the deadline is coming for the review, so I made myself pick it up thinking it might be a chore. Couldn't put it back down!! Actually thought of you (not that I know you) and others from NYC. It's NYC in the 1930's (why I thought of you, right?) and it's SO good. I think it is actually now available for everyone... not quite done but so far I highly recommend it!
I agree with everyone's comments about The Help and I think Kathryn Stockett does an amazing job with first person. She makes each voice believable as the chapters switch between three very different women.
ReplyDeletei will offer another opinion: i found the help to be stereotypical and condescending. it involves simply wrought characters who fill easily constructed roles.
ReplyDeletefor a subject matter of such importance, i expected more of the writing and craftsmanship. may you enjoy the book, but may you also see through the shoddy construction.

I read The Help a couple of months ago and loved it. It was one of those books that kept me up at night saying "just one more page..."
ReplyDeleteI laughed out loud reading the post about navigating a bathroom when wearing a romper. I've worn one out of the house exactly twice in my life. I would wear them more but that exact scenario always prevents me from doing so. Hilarious!
ReplyDeletegood lord. $45 for a braid? It took me a few days to learn to french braid my own hair when I was 6. The idea of paying someone else to give me braids is laughable.

ReplyDeleteI loved reading "The Help". I was afraid the book would try too hard to be heart-warming (I hate that in books and movies), but it was so effortless, funny, and with the most real characters I've ever read. I read it in 3 days.

It made me laugh out loud and also cry for the injustices done to the African American women and people in the southern American States as well as all women who aren't as traditionally beautiful or willing to go with the "norm" that society plagues them with.

ReplyDeleteI think the braid bar might be worth the money if you wanted to use the hairstyle for an event, maybe a party or something, but otherwise not so much. The Help is an incredible book, I read it and listened to the audio book and both were great! I'm looking forward to the movie too!

ReplyDeleteOooh I actually love that braid bar idea! I've seen a bunch of those "blow out" bars pop up, and I have felt kind of "meh" about them, since I know they wouldn't last in my hair for more than an evening. However: an intricate braid that might have staying power? Awesome!

ReplyDeleteIf you are staying in the Detroit area, might I recommend you make a visit to the Cranbrook campus in Bloomfield Hills? I went to highschool there and it has unusually beautiful architecture, sculpture, and landscapes. Truly a sight to see in the area!

ReplyDeleteThe Help is awesome. My grandmother and her sister remember growing up when "the help" had their own bathrooms, and they said the book pretty much got it right.
ReplyDeleteI love The Help, probably because I grew up with a nanny, and it hit home. I'm in my 20s, so it obviously wasn't during that time period, and my family didn't treat her poorly at all. She was a second mother to me!

I read Maine and thought it was pretty empty and not nearly as good as the review the NY Times gave it. I thought it did not have well developed characters and was not well written. A good, vapid beach read if you are looking for that, though.

ReplyDeleteI read The Help last summer and I loved it! I was a bit disappointed that there was a movie coming out and that Kristin Chenoweth wouldn't be playing Celia Foote(she would be perfect!).

In fact, one night - true story! - I was at one of these chic speakeasy bars with my husband and some girlfriends. I had my own hair braided up around my head.I was downstairs in the line for the bathroom and this sweet girl complimented my hair. As she happened to be out celebrating her birthday, I told her when she came out I'd do her hair the same, if she wanted, right there at her table with her friends. She was so sweet, she bought me a chic cocktail for braiding her hair! Only in the northwest, eh? =)
