Would you wear a caftan?

Would you wear this beautiful new hand-block-printed Indian caftan by EmersonMade? It would be effortlessly breezy to wear while reading books, curling up with friends or hosting a late-night dinner party. Reminds me of my mom when she was really young in the 70s.

Thoughts? Would you wear it?

  3. YES! if done right, they are a beautiful way to keep cool and stay chic.

p.s: your "back from England" pic shows so much love and light. Very sweet shot.

  4. I keep debating buying one. I'm worried about them on the subway. (The Q train whizzes by, and WOOSH! Underpants.)

  24. Yes, after spending time in India wearing the typical kurta I have realized the versatility of this sort of thing: it can be worn over jeans.. or leggings.. or alone if it's long enough and not see-through !

    ReplyDelete
  25. If I could afford it I would buy one right now... I would love to wear one!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I have been debating this exact thing! I have become obsessed with the new Two New York caftans, but they are pricey. My friend thinks I could make one like this. I also love the hippie 70's momma vibe of them. But would people give me strange looks if I just wore it with flip-flops to the grocery store? Still deciding that.. Joanna, you should do a post about reactions to the caftan if you get one! They could be very funny!

Also, I am LOVING last week's Motherhood posts about juggling. Yours was especially heartfelt and beautifully written. It made me want to sit down at my laptop and do some REAL writing. Very impressive and beautiful for the blogosphere, I hope you are writing a book about motherhood!

  36. Not only would I wear a caftan, but I love them. I have a big plan to pretty much only wear caftans from age 50 onward. For the next 20 years, I'll continue to just make them a part of my wardrobe rotation. They're so effortless, comfy, and chic. I can't think of any other item of clothing that meets all three criteria.

  66. yeah i would totally wear one! i recently discovered how amazingly comfortable and stylish maxi dresses can be and now i'm on the hunt for a rad 70s caftan pattern on etsy. i think us ladies should wear only things we think are fabulous, we owe it to ourselves.

    ReplyDelete

  96. Caftans remind me so much of my grandma!
She was a perfect example of 1970's glamour and style, and she was the first among her friends to adopt the caftan look.

She died just over a year ago and I inherited a bunch of her old caftans that she'd sewn herself. My grandpa gave them to me thinking I might like to hack them up and use the cool fabrics for sewing projects, but I've kept them in tact because I could never imagine dismantling her handiwork.

Not enough people know about groovy ol' caftans. Thanks for featuring one and reminding me of my treasure trove!

  102. I'm kinda short/stubby so I'd probably look like a small boat in a caftan. Maybe if it's lightly fitted, but that seems to defeat the purpose of one...it seems to work better for the lithe, willowy body type.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I have 2 and am wearing one right now. I get tons of compliments. And boy are they great in this heat at the playground!

    ReplyDelete
  110. I Love anything EmersonMade & just wish this wasn't a one size item as I am only 5'2" & afraid it would swallow me. I am also concerned my husband would think it looked a little "Mrs. Roper" from Three's Company. If I were over 5'6" I'd buy it in a second regardless!

    ReplyDelete

  120. Kaftans do look really breezy and carefree. :) As an Indian-American though, I can' believe the prices on these. hahaha. I have plenty of handmade, handstamped, pieces & belive me, you can get a very similar piece to the $200+ Emerson one features here for under $15.

It is interesting to note Ella's response regarding cultural appropriation. I have often wondered at how when a young Indian person wears bindis/only kurtis etc around in the US, other girls might call her fobby (Fresh Of the Boat) -- and I am guilty of making similar comments when I was in middle school -- but it becomes "global chic" when Western (read: white) women(Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears are some celebrities who have performed in the glittering get-ups of South Asia) promote it.

Of course, most everyone in the world is inspired by other cultures in some sense.

    ReplyDelete
  121. @Amal & Joanna

defintely! I don't really know any Indian women who would ever consider wearing a cotton kaftan out to party. They are mainly for 'home-wear.' :)

  123. Here in Australia they are a must over summer - and while they are perfect for the beach, they don't have to be only for the beach. i love them dressed up to wear out on a balmy night for a drink or two :-)I am also pondering buying a full length floaty skirt - it's all about finding one that suits! Great post xxx

I'm not familiar with EmersonMade, and since I can't find the information on the website anywhere, I'm extremely interested in this statement: "this Limited Edition piece was developed by Emerson with the legendary textile artists of Rajasthan India." Of course, it's a gorgeous piece, and there is nothing wrong with cultural inspiration. However, the mark-up on this piece is exorbitant. I'm curious as to what is going back to the textile artists in India?

  125. Hi also from Australia. I giggled reading this post - reminded me of when my mum took to the kaftan about ten years ago over summer. She bought one from an op shop and loved it so much, used it as a template and made heaps of them in all kinds of crazy colours. My brother was 18 at the time and was horrified - I remember him pleading with mum to "not wear another moo-moo" in front of his friends! I thought they were groovy. By the way, I just love your blog. Joy.

I definitely wear that one from Emerson Made!

The thing about batik and Indian stuff is that you have to find new colours and prints. There is still a LOT of burgundy, brownish, oldish BAD stuff that remind me of hippies in a bad way.

But indian prints are very diverse, and you gotta find the way to get an indian "vibe" without being costumey. I wouldn{ t pair it with Birkenstocks, or gray hair....its a lot better with

great modern hair, done nails in bright colors and all that modern "primping" can add up to the look.

    ReplyDelete
