Would you wear this beautiful new hand-block-printed Indian caftan by EmersonMade? It would be effortlessly breezy to wear while reading books, curling up with friends or hosting a late-night dinner party. Reminds me of my mom when she was really young in the 70s.Thoughts? Would you wear it?

I would definitely wear them. They seem so comfortable and light.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! The look is so bohemian, easy, cool and comfy.
ReplyDeleteYES! if done right, they are a beautiful way to keep cool and stay chic.
ReplyDeletep.s: your "back from England" pic shows so much love and light. Very sweet shot.
I keep debating buying one. I'm worried about them on the subway. (The Q train whizzes by, and WOOSH! Underpants.)
ReplyDeleteI would basically wear anything by EmersonMade, especially a caftan. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeletewww.underthecottonwood.com
I totally would. This one is my favourite as well and it looks so comfy and beautiful. The print is so special and my mom used to have one as well in the 70s:)
ReplyDeleteTotally. Bare layer, caftan, belt, shoes. Done.
ReplyDeletei love it!
ReplyDeleteYES! I almost posted this the other day and I keep looking at them on the brink of buying. Not only are they absolutely beautiful, I think I would feel so inspired while wearing it. Could you see yourself wearing one?
ReplyDeleteI want one now!
ReplyDeleteYes ma'am! I feel like it transports you to another time. A care-free moment from the past.
ReplyDeleteYes!!! It's absolutely gorgeous! Wouldn't you?
ReplyDeleteThat's a perfect garment for a woman to wear when it is really hot.
ReplyDeleteProbably. Maybe to the beach or to chill out in.
ReplyDeleteInteresting, I just learned what a Caftan is.
ReplyDeleteGreetings,
Filip
I absolutely love caftans. the 70's is always a do in my book. Lovely!

julie, yes! it's such a beautiful, easy style. i really love it. now i just have to pinch some pennies first :)
ReplyDeleteAmber, haha, that would be so embarrassing! i think these might be long enough not to flip up too much? xo
ReplyDeleteYes!!!
ReplyDeleteI love it... the print the comfort the ease... but it seems like a very slippery slope from here to a muumuu! Just sayin!
ReplyDeleteYes, I would totally wear one. They are so beautiful and unique!
ReplyDeleteMuch love,
B
oh i love it. so simple, but still summery and sexy. i'd love one!
ReplyDeleteI would most definitely wear it! ESPECIALLY pregnant and in the heat! Maybe with a belt because my pregnant belly's so big! Wish I had one right now!
ReplyDeletemost def! whats best is that its thin and good to wear in this hot weather!
ReplyDeletei love this bohemian look. so comfy and chic. Reminds me a lot of the store La La in Laguna Beach - Kerry Cassil does amazing prints and bedding!
ReplyDeleteYes! Very pretty!
ReplyDeleteYes, after spending time in India wearing the typical kurta I have realized the versatility of this sort of thing: it can be worn over jeans.. or leggings.. or alone if it's long enough and not see-through !
ReplyDeleteIf I could afford it I would buy one right now... I would love to wear one!
ReplyDeleteI have been debating this exact thing! I have become obsessed with the new Two New York caftans, but they are pricey. My friend thinks I could make one like this. I also love the hippie 70's momma vibe of them. But would people give me strange looks if I just wore it with flip-flops to the grocery store? Still deciding that.. Joanna, you should do a post about reactions to the caftan if you get one! They could be very funny!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I am LOVING last week's Motherhood posts about juggling. Yours was especially heartfelt and beautifully written. It made me want to sit down at my laptop and do some REAL writing. Very impressive and beautiful for the blogosphere, I hope you are writing a book about motherhood!

ReplyDeletewww.katelewisart.blogspot.com
I might be old enough to be your mom, and I would definitely wear caftans at home when entertaining casually or even by the pool. They are beautiful when made of the right fabrics. xx's
ReplyDeleteSeems like cultural appropriation for white women to wear these pieces with no understanding of the cultures that they came from. So no, I wouldn't.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely!
ReplyDeleteI wore one of my grandmother's caftans from the 70's to my birthday dinner last Friday!
ReplyDeleteI felt like a mix between Mary Kate Olson and Anjelica Houston
Absolutely. They are perfect while travelling too...
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh. I would throw that on in an instant.
ReplyDeleteI would indeed :) Looks so comfortable but oh so stylish. Perfect combination, if you ask me :)
ReplyDeleteWhatcha mean would I? I am! (Well, not here in a coffee shop but it gets much hotter & I am not responsible.) But mine isn't as nice as Emerson's.
ReplyDeleteI love this! The print is so beautiful and feminine. I would definitely wear one especially being pregnant in the Arizona summer!
ReplyDeleteNot only would I wear a caftan, but I love them. I have a big plan to pretty much only wear caftans from age 50 onward. For the next 20 years, I'll continue to just make them a part of my wardrobe rotation. They're so effortless, comfy, and chic. I can't think of any other item of clothing that meets all three criteria.
ReplyDelete100%...absolutely!
ReplyDeleteMakes me want to buy one and have a picnic so I could wear it.
ReplyDeleteYes! Especially if I could wear it while spending a lazy day reading on a porch.
ReplyDeleteI would wear one, I love Indian style!
ReplyDeleteoh yeah, i'm all about it...
ReplyDeletesimply adorable!
Jessi
finnpuppy@gail.com
Definitely. Love these ones.
ReplyDeleteYES! I love everything by EmersonMade, especially this caftan, but I can't bear the thought of spending $238 on it. Yikes. xo.
ReplyDeletehaha, anonymous, me too!
ReplyDeleteNo:) Not my thing.
ReplyDeletePetra
I would absolutely wear that garment. Beautiful. Comfy.
ReplyDeleteWhat more could one want?
Wearing a blanket-like shirt? YES PLEASE! :D
ReplyDeletenope- I'm way too short! also, my body shape is more hourglass, not straight, so I feel like caftans are just not flattering :)
ReplyDeleteahem, how to put this delicately... HELL YES, i would wear one every single day!!
ReplyDeleteum yes i would totally wear that!

Yes, its looking so cool! Love it!
ReplyDeleteYes, I would! It reminds me of beautiful summer days :)
ReplyDeleteCertainly! It looks so pretty and effortless! <3
ReplyDeleteoh, yes! It's definitely perfect for summer! :)
ReplyDeleteIf it wasn't see through, yes!
ReplyDeletePretty much by Emerson Made, I would wear! Especially this!
ReplyDeleteYes it's gorgeous. Even better if it's full-length!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would-I don't know if I could pull it off. Seeing all the comments here, apparently they are really good for the summer weather. Maybe if I had a some ideas about how to wear them, I would.
ReplyDeleteMaybe if I was taller! They look so easy and effortless when done right, but I don't think it's the right style for me.

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely - it looks really comfortable.
ReplyDeleteyes!!! it's perfect for the crazy Indian weather!
ReplyDeleteYes! I have been keeping my eye on this piece since she announced it. I also have to same some pennies first too.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely wear them! Gorgeous, fun colors and perfect for summer. I loveee EmersonMade's :)
ReplyDeleteFunny, we Brits spell it Kaftan. I wear one over my swim wear, when on holiday. It would feel a bit Demis Roussos (not sure if her ever made it Stateside, google him, hilarious) to wear one at home
ReplyDeleteyeah i would totally wear one! i recently discovered how amazingly comfortable and stylish maxi dresses can be and now i'm on the hunt for a rad 70s caftan pattern on etsy. i think us ladies should wear only things we think are fabulous, we owe it to ourselves.
ReplyDeleteIt's gorgeous! Absolutely would wear it. Too bad it's on backorder :)
ReplyDeleteso chic and looks comfy :)
ReplyDeletehttp://girlynote.blogspot.com/
That's beautiful! Perfect for easy breezy summer dressing :)
ReplyDeleteInstylation
Yes! I want one!
ReplyDeleteJudging by the fact that it's back ordered, I'd say most of us would wear it!!
ReplyDeleteYES!! I absolutely love it. In SC, it'd be nice to wear since it's so hot
ReplyDeleteI would consider wearing a shorter version, but not a full length, and not at that price.
ReplyDeletein.a.heartbeat.<3
ReplyDeletexo
That model looks beautiful. I would not so much look beautiful in a caftan. I would just look pudgy and dated.
ReplyDeleteyessss! they looks so comfy!!
ReplyDeleteAnything made by Emerson is definitely something I would wear! Gorg!
ReplyDeleteIt certainly looks pretty in the photos :)
ReplyDeletei would totally wear this - at least in my own head i think i could pull it off!
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI would. It's a classic piece that I'd love to have in my wardrobe!
ReplyDeleteI would totally wear it if I didn't have extensive tattoos on both arms. As it is now, it would be too many different patterns going on ;) But it's absolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYes. I would definitely rock a caftan. In fact, I was just saying, with all of this crazy hot heat, I was thinking of pulling a Mrs. Roper and stocking my closet full of them!
ReplyDeleteLOVE them! i bought some in India a few years ago and wear them all the time. i spotted some at tjmaxx last year on clearance and bought about 5 more. they were from india too, made of the same thin soft cotton ....even had he embroidery! they are so stylish....i feel very chic in them...even now, when im pregnant!
ReplyDeletewww.vivacindy.com
I love these! I feel like it would make me feel oh so feminine. I love clothes that make me feel pretty!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I could pull it off, but Emerson does make them look lovely, along with everything else she wears.
ReplyDeleteTOTALLY - I'd wear a anything EmersonMade! & definitely a caftan! x
ReplyDeleteLOVING the Kaftan! I'd wear that on any hot summer day.
ReplyDeleteBTW, they don't wear Kaftan's in India... ;)
These look so pretty and comfy! Would totally go for them!
ReplyDeletei would def wear one..duh!! they are too cute to say no to..
ReplyDeleteActually my mom still wears them and although I used to make fun of her when I was a teenager, now I can totally relate. They're so comfy durcing summer and can really be stylish. I only wear them at home, though.
ReplyDeletedefinetly wear it!!! I LOVE these etnic fabrics. I'm passionate for african capulanas. I have a babys ling made of a capulana to carry my baby boy!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! This must find it's way to my closet. I would wear this during our late night dinner/movie parties with our friends. Love, love love!
ReplyDeleteI am having a horrible beyond horrible day...and your site makes me feel so much better! One click and all my mind is worried about for the moment is whether or not I would wear a gorgeous caftan (I would by the way!) Thanks, Jo! Xo
ReplyDeletethis one is incredibly chic! and I love this kind of thing at music festivals, great for carrying all day and throwing on when it gets colder or you are sitting by the camp fire late at night
ReplyDeletenot gonna lie... i had no idea what a caftan was.
ReplyDeletevertically challenged, wouldn't look good on me, so, I have to say N-O.
ReplyDeleteCaftans remind me so much of my grandma!
ReplyDeleteShe was a perfect example of 1970's glamour and style, and she was the first among her friends to adopt the caftan look.
She died just over a year ago and I inherited a bunch of her old caftans that she'd sewn herself. My grandpa gave them to me thinking I might like to hack them up and use the cool fabrics for sewing projects, but I've kept them in tact because I could never imagine dismantling her handiwork.
Not enough people know about groovy ol' caftans. Thanks for featuring one and reminding me of my treasure trove!
Hell to the yes - in fact I'd never take it off.
ReplyDeleteLOVE. I would absolutely wear it. If only I were rich enough to buy it now :(
ReplyDeleteI would absolutely wear it!!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! I'd wear one on vacation or even at home running errands!
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with them! Have you checked out the ones made by Two. Michelle sells them over at the Pretty Mommy website and they are to DIE for!
ReplyDeleteBest,
Tina
I'm kinda short/stubby so I'd probably look like a small boat in a caftan. Maybe if it's lightly fitted, but that seems to defeat the purpose of one...it seems to work better for the lithe, willowy body type.
ReplyDeleteI have 2 and am wearing one right now. I get tons of compliments. And boy are they great in this heat at the playground!
ReplyDeleteYes they are SO geourgous and seem so comfortable..my husband said they look like a mumu but what does he know! ;)
ReplyDeleteI probably would have said no, but I want this one! Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAwwh wish I had that right now. I am home from the summer, so that would be perfect.
ReplyDeleteI love it, I wish I could pull that look off!
ReplyDeleteOf course!
ReplyDelete;)
I would absolutely wear this. It's perfect.
ReplyDeletetotals - i would definitely wear this. it looks so comfy!
ReplyDeleteI Love anything EmersonMade & just wish this wasn't a one size item as I am only 5'2" & afraid it would swallow me. I am also concerned my husband would think it looked a little "Mrs. Roper" from Three's Company. If I were over 5'6" I'd buy it in a second regardless!
ReplyDeleteyes please.
ReplyDeletebut what do you wear under it cause you can see through it?
this might be a mom question:)
It looks cute, but I don't know if I could pull it off.
ReplyDeleteI wish, this is so beautiful, unfortuneantly out of my price range, i brought a cheap vintage one from ebay, just waiting for a lazy summer to try it out
ReplyDeleteI love it! I would definitely wear it. Love!
ReplyDeletegiveitagoblog.blogspot.com
Definitely, definitely, definitely would wear one! I've been on the lookout for a great black/white one for a while now.
ReplyDeletehazel and hunter -- "at least in my own head i think i could pull it off!" -- LOL, me too :)
ReplyDeleteamal, really? that's so interesting!
ReplyDeleteLove them! They are so fun!

http://blog.badjoan.com/
erin, that is amazing!! i bet you would look gorgeous in your grandmothers' caftans. and paige, you are so sweet, aw, i hope your day is going better!
ReplyDeleteKaftans do look really breezy and carefree. :) As an Indian-American though, I can' believe the prices on these. hahaha. I have plenty of handmade, handstamped, pieces & belive me, you can get a very similar piece to the $200+ Emerson one features here for under $15.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to note Ella's response regarding cultural appropriation. I have often wondered at how when a young Indian person wears bindis/only kurtis etc around in the US, other girls might call her fobby (Fresh Of the Boat) -- and I am guilty of making similar comments when I was in middle school -- but it becomes "global chic" when Western (read: white) women(Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears are some celebrities who have performed in the glittering get-ups of South Asia) promote it.
Of course, most everyone in the world is inspired by other cultures in some sense.
@Amal & Joanna
ReplyDeletedefintely! I don't really know any Indian women who would ever consider wearing a cotton kaftan out to party. They are mainly for 'home-wear.' :)
I have one I wear as a house dress My teen tells me I'm not "allowed" to wear it in public. I did blog it a while ago though!
ReplyDeleteHere in Australia they are a must over summer - and while they are perfect for the beach, they don't have to be only for the beach. i love them dressed up to wear out on a balmy night for a drink or two :-)I am also pondering buying a full length floaty skirt - it's all about finding one that suits! Great post xxx
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with EmersonMade, and since I can't find the information on the website anywhere, I'm extremely interested in this statement: "this Limited Edition piece was developed by Emerson with the legendary textile artists of Rajasthan India." Of course, it's a gorgeous piece, and there is nothing wrong with cultural inspiration. However, the mark-up on this piece is exorbitant. I'm curious as to what is going back to the textile artists in India?
ReplyDeleteHi also from Australia. I giggled reading this post - reminded me of when my mum took to the kaftan about ten years ago over summer. She bought one from an op shop and loved it so much, used it as a template and made heaps of them in all kinds of crazy colours. My brother was 18 at the time and was horrified - I remember him pleading with mum to "not wear another moo-moo" in front of his friends! I thought they were groovy. By the way, I just love your blog. Joy.
ReplyDeletei would if it would look good cinched with a belt! {i think it would lose some of the breezy effect though}. the emerson made caftan is gorgeous though!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I love the beautiful colors and slimming style. I just wish I was not pregnant. Post baby!
ReplyDeleteLeigh
i love love love this :)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Love it!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! I love it! Perfect for hot days, balmy nights or thrown over a bikini at the beach. I'm planning on sewing myself some caftans this summer!
ReplyDeleteYES! and i want that one sooo bad!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! I can't really think of anything EmersonMade that I wouldn't wear!!
ReplyDeleteLove, Leigh
I would totally wear that! Perfect for the weekends!
ReplyDeleteit looks like a dream. i would 100% wear it, probably so often as to annoy my friends and loved ones.
ReplyDeleteJoanna -- LOVE your blog. I have a completely unrelated question, but can't contact you via email for some reason.
ReplyDeleteJ Schatz egg lamps. Do you still endorse them? I'm about to order my second for a gift without actually using one myself!
Thanks darling!
Elizabeth
absolutely!! so pretty!
ReplyDeleteYES! would definitely wear one of their caftans over cut off shorts with a cami underneath. i think it's a great summer look.
ReplyDeleteThis shirt is gorgeous! If I saw this in a store, I would instantly gravitate towards it. I love interesting prints like this one :)
ReplyDeleteFor our Australian summer - yes! Most definitely x
ReplyDeleteabsolutely. I love the vintagey vibe they exude and the comfort factor is big too. I am drawn to unique pieces, and this is definitely one I could see myself loving and wearing.

ReplyDeleteYes, of course - immediately !!
ReplyDeleteIt's great.
Hi Joanna,
ReplyDeleteMy mom wears a Kaftan all the time. I guess they are common in India.
Anyhoo..I just wanted to tell you that I adore your blog! I am a new reader and I've been trying to catch on the older posts one by one :-)
~anu
yes because they are comfy!:D
ReplyDeletestylish, great colours... whats not to like. I'd definitely wear it.
ReplyDeleteI'd be worried it'd make me look even shorter than 5'3". It is so lovely, though. If you're tall, please take advantage!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Sam; I'd love one but I'm 5'1" and would look like I'm drowing in a sea of fabric if I did. The print is beautiful on that one!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! All you need a sunny beach and a beautiful sunset to match!
ReplyDeleteMaybe a hammock too?
I LOVE EmersonMade's new kaftans. (I love everything they make!)
ReplyDeleteYes. Definitely want this one!
ReplyDeleteYes, definitely. They look so effortless.
ReplyDeletein a heartbeat!
ReplyDeleteNo doubt! Especially in the summer.. when you want to wear the most minimal amount of clothing possible!
ReplyDeleteFor sure! With one of those fake tattoos.
ReplyDeleteheck yeah. contemplating buying one, actually. since Monday. I just go to the site and ponder.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely - that is gorgeous. Sold out :(
ReplyDeleteMy favorite - like a second skin...
ReplyDeleteIts gorgeous!! I definitely would wear it!
ReplyDeleteI definitely wear that one from Emerson Made!
ReplyDeleteThe thing about batik and Indian stuff is that you have to find new colours and prints. There is still a LOT of burgundy, brownish, oldish BAD stuff that remind me of hippies in a bad way.
But indian prints are very diverse, and you gotta find the way to get an indian "vibe" without being costumey. I wouldn{ t pair it with Birkenstocks, or gray hair....its a lot better with
great modern hair, done nails in bright colors and all that modern "primping" can add up to the look.
Indubitably, completely and utterly so.
ReplyDeleteYep! I'd totally wear one! They seem as tho they are totally breezy, comfortable & just plain awesome :)
ReplyDeletexoxo
sure! with white trousers or a pair of jeans
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! I signed up for her waiting/mailing list right away. Endless possibilities with this caftan.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah! I love caftans and they remind me of my mom too!
ReplyDeleteyes, i love them very much :D reminds me of my great aunt who lived in them when i was kid.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many gorgeous caftans and tunics out there, but I feel like you have to be either really skinny or really old to pull one off properly. Sadly, I am neither. (Yet.)
ReplyDeleteI have 3 "caftan-like" tops from PlumPrettySugar. They sell on etsy and have their own website with an online shop. I wear them all the time! They're so pretty and comfortable. The fabric is beautiful. (And MUCH cheaper than those caftans from EmersonMade!) I love them.
ReplyDeletehttp://store.plumprettysugar.com/categories/dresses/
I own two caftans and love them!
ReplyDeleteI would have to be in the right 'mood' to rock it confidently but I would totally wear it!
ReplyDeleteheck yes. i love caftans.
ReplyDeleteIn a heart beat. I love Emerson's style.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely wear that caftan, as I did in the 70's...they are very comfy! xxoo :)
ReplyDeleteAlready ordered! I've been a convert since I found a beautiful, lined '70s caftan at a vintage store two summers ago. It's my summer go-to for working in the studio - much classier than pjs!
ReplyDeleteYes! I really love the neckline and bold prints. Currently loving Emersonmade's line of India tunics...
ReplyDeleteYes, I would! That is so, so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIf i looked like her I'd wear one...haha
ReplyDeleteI know kaftan's are made in India but Indians mainly wear sari's. I think originally they are persian but they are commonly worn in North Africa, quick history lesson. ;)
ReplyDeleteABSOLUTELY!

Breezy and sexy at the same time. I would absolutely don one.
ReplyDeleteHell yes! It's gorgeous and comfy. A win-win situation. :)
