Did you hear this crazy story: In late May, a NYC cop allegedly pulled over a Dutch tourist, pictured below, and reprimanded her for riding a bike while wearing a skirt. He said she was distracting cars! At first, she thought he was kidding, but quickly realized he wasn't when he asked for her ID. How insane is that?! So, as a lighthearted protest, a bunch of girls (and a few guys) came together for a skirt bike ride yesterday evening. My friend Shannen took a few photos...

It was a great night!! Thanks to those who organized, and high five to all ladies who ride in skirts or otherwise! :) xoxo (Photos by the fabulous Shannen Norman for Cup of Jo. And you might recognize my friend Caroline, above, from the hair tutorials:) And thanks to HUB Bikes and the New Amsterdam Bike Show for organizing.)

riding a bike with ballerina flats looks so cute :)
ReplyDeletehttp://girlynote.blogspot.com
this is GREAT! also, ALL of these bike ladies are so PRETTY!
ReplyDeleteLovely - what a great bike ride indeed!
ReplyDeleteThat is so fabulous! Love it!
ReplyDeleteIt's a crazy world out there!
ReplyDeleteI rode a bike in a maxi dress in Sirmione, Italy this week! so fun.
ReplyDeleteWho's the guy rockin' the skirt?
ReplyDeleteI love that you ladies did this!!! I ride my bike in a skirt all the time, and I can't believe that cop actually seriously pulled that poor girl over! Unbelievable. She should take it as a compliment that she was "traffic-stopping" hot! :)
ReplyDeleteWhere oh where are your helmets ladies?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful ladies, but where're all the helmets??
ReplyDeleteAdorable! Can I ask where your flats are from? I've been trying to find the perfect brown flats for summer, and your pair might just be in the running!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos, and I love, love the dresses and the light! You all look fabulous. And I love the cheeky "I like the way I bike" sign. :)
ReplyDelete... But I gently must implore the riders – please, please, wear helmets while riding, even short distances. I suffered a painful bicycle accident two summers ago, and my helmet totally saved my noggin when I cracked it on concrete. Be safe out there!
How absurd!?! Ugh....what a tool. Good for them!!! 110% supporter of that. I am kinda flabbergasted over here at the thought....and yep! I saw and noticed the hair model.
ReplyDeleteyes! they're steve madden from a couple years ago -- they're soooo cheap and comfy!
ReplyDeleteYes, I heard about it...several of us posted on it when it happened. Also I think it would be nice if someone mentioned Liz & others who started this & Mikael of Cophenhagen Cycle Chic.
ReplyDeleteEveryone looks great.
Probalby the police is right, it was certainly all over the news here in Holland. Only joking. Nice blog. I put you on my bloglist.
ReplyDeleteGreetings,
Filip
yes, i hear you about the helmets. going to wear one today. thank you for the push!!
ReplyDeletehahaha - this is so funny! and so cute!!
ReplyDelete♥ allister bee blog
Unbelievable! I could imagine this happened somewhere 40 years ago, but in 2011? Girls, take the skirts out and let's have a ride!
ReplyDeleteLove the way these girls counter in NYC :-)
oh, susan, this ride was actually organized by HUB bikes, not by the other bloggers -- i just looked them up and they apparently did one, too! i would never leave out credit where it was due; this was just a different thing, great minds think alike!! :)
ReplyDeleteCrazy!! Joanna--is that your new bike?? Looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post! Love to see all the ladies on bikes. P.S. Great legs Jo!! Way to rock it :)
ReplyDeleteBlair
i rode my bike to the office today.. in a dress :) and i got a honk. ah well... its SO hot in chicago right now! loved this post :) xo jillian
ReplyDeletehahaa! in the netherlands everyone bikes! in heels and skirt/dresses. im american.. so it was kind of odd to see at first, but now it seems normal! :P

How the eff are you supposed to ride a bike? The seat is right up in your crotch anyhow... I doubt anyone could see much.
ReplyDeleteI hate when authorities police personal activity. There is no law in place of this; he cannot punish it.

ReplyDeleteThis is the most awesome post! I've only ever ridden a bike once in a skirt, but hoorah to all who went out and supported! <3
ReplyDeleteI bike in a skirt all the time! But I did click over to comment that none of you lovely ladies are wearing helemts :( I see that you've already covered that in the comments section though so I'll leave my little speech out of here. Looks like fun!
ReplyDeleteIsn't that why women's bikes have that low center bar - because you were ALWAYS riding in skirts since wearing pants was unseemly?!?
ReplyDeleteAh, I love this! Girl power at its best. So fantastic. Great to stick up for what you believe in. Bravo, ladies (and gents!) Jo, what are your plans for the 4th? Will Toby be eating his first hot dog? xoxox
ReplyDeleteYou would think that a city that has no laws against women being topless (I read that on Glamour the other day), wouldn't care what a woman was wearing on her bottom half while riding a bike as long as she was, in fact, wearing clothing. Plus, don't NYC cops have better things to do?
ReplyDeleteVery cool protest! Oh, and I agree with all the others about the helmets -- wear them always!!
Weird. I left a comment saying here was a post about the original ride & then it didn't appear.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, also I asked if Toby rides a bike (via you)? I'd love to see pix of that - & esp. if he decides to wear a skirt;)
The photographs here are wonderful.

Everyone looks great but missing the most important accessory - a helmet!
ReplyDeleteperfect. i don't ride my bike around town so much, but i ride my vespa everywhere - and nearly always in skirts.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the guy in the skirt/wrap--he is a cool one.
ReplyDeleteLove the wee-ride bar, Joanna! I have one on my bike too...we bring our kids with us, even when we don't :)
ReplyDeletelol that is toooooo funny! I love it.. I would also like to ask a few of these lovely ladies where they got their skirts and tops, everyone looks so cute!
ReplyDeleteeveryone looks adorable!
ReplyDeleteand good for 'yall just getting together and riding for the soul purpose...
wonderful!
and by the way...did she get a ticket?
ReplyDeleteSo I'm a little confused. Was she flashing anyone because of the skirt? If not I really can't understand what the big deal is. If she was, there are ways to keep from exposing your hoo-ha to the world even as you bike in a skirt...
ReplyDeleteI am 100% certain that story is a fake. That woman professes to be a "zero dollar" marketing genius and id a the general manager of a new bike company in holland. And lookey here -- she got her picture and bike all over the internet. I mean, who are the bike companies that sponsored this ride?
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that! It sounds like it was a lovely event. And what pretty skirts!
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh, that look so so fun.... AND the outfits are amazing! wow! (any chance you could ask Caroline where her dress is from?
ReplyDeletei bike to work in a skirt & ballet flats pretty much every day through downtown toronto! i love that you did this ride, and if i had been in nyc i would have been down for sure! skirt biking is the best! and so cute :)
ReplyDeletei love the photos and its awesome how the guys joined in on the fun. Yeah, take that cop!! haha
ReplyDeleteXo
what a fabulous idea! i love!
ReplyDeletecute pictures!! i totally wish i could have been there!! i ALWAYS ride my bike in a skirt/ dress haha. i dont want to not wear a cute outfit to school just because im ridding my bike. i wear shorts under though...just saying. anyways sounds fun!
ReplyDeletelove this! wish I could have been there...
ReplyDeleteI always wear skirts and dresses, and I bike a TON!
also, love that charming, skirt-sporting gent!
What a lovely way to protest. I used to live in a block of flats in which there also lived a very beautiful leggy lady who always wore insne heals and micro skirts when riding her bike (she wore them all the time of course but also when on her bike)
ReplyDeleteI love it, such a fabulous idea by some obviously fabulous girls. Great photos, too!
ReplyDeletei love the pictures!! what a fun event.
ReplyDeleteI ride my bike to work, but I wear yoga pants and then change once i get there :/ its not as cute but im not brave enough to bike in a skirt yet! i dont want to flash anyone! haha
Oooh! I wish I could have made it! Also, Joanna - who makes your bike? I'm thinking about trading in my mountain bike for a touring bike - because, you know, they look better with skirts!
ReplyDeleteI love riding in skirts and dresses! Wish I could have been there.
ReplyDeleteI think that is so wonderful! Everybody looks awesome in their skirts/dresses biking!
ReplyDeletexo,
Em
I have to agree with the "Where are your helmets" comments. You may not look quite as cute but you'll look smart!
ReplyDeleteI ride my bike a TON and always in a skirt or dress. I hope I am adorable enough to be a distraction, but that is hardly my main goal. Love the photos!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that. I have fantasies about riding a bike with a skirt, but never have. This makes me want to do it more. =)

i love the orangeish skirt on the girl in the photo above the red dress!! do you know her or know where she got it? she looks perfect
ReplyDeleteI love this, and will think of it my next skirt-wearin' bike ride...♥ ♥ ♥
ReplyDeleteIn Portland we have NAKED bike rides. Take that police ;)
ReplyDeleteThat is completely ridiculous! How is that possible?

This is great! I'm glad you guys did this! Love the photos btw.
ReplyDeletethis is just too great! of course i ride my bike with a skirt... why not?!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that!!! But I love the idea of protesting a little! In fact, I'm off to go ride my bike while wearing a skirt!
ReplyDeleteEveryone looks seriously cute. I needs to get me a bike!

but where are your helmets??!
ReplyDeletei miss riding my bike....cairo is a very bike unfriendly city.
ReplyDeletei used to always wear a skirt when i biked....the only ones that make it tricky are the big full-skirted skirts, they get stuck in the wheels.
i also always maintain that it is easier to wear stilettos when cycling too......
I have seen ladies on bikes flashing their panties, and wonder if they know what's going on down there? But, it's yours and if you got it and want to flaunt it (as long as your wearing something underneath--please--same to the guys), what's the big deal?
ReplyDeleteYou all look adorable by the way!
OH.... I am LOVING THIS!!!! LOVING all the wonderful outfits!!
ReplyDeleteNow THIS is how you protest! Nice job, ladies! Girl Power!

That is CRAZY, I ride my bike in a skirt or dress every single day... Good thing I dont live in New York...
ReplyDeleteHere in Southern California we ride bikes in bikinis. They aren't called beach cruisers for nothing. :) Just this week I rode through Palm Springs in a bathing suit. A short skirt would seem modest!
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Rebels!!!!! That's so cute & funny.
ReplyDeleteYou were all beatiful ladies!!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats!!
Lovely initiative!!!
you all look great! and it sounds kinda fun
ReplyDeleteADRIANA
haha - this is way too funny!! loving those outfits and the guy in the skirt is great. Have a great weekend!

Hey! Jo or anyone else reading this, could you help me find out what shoes that girl is wearing in the second to last picture? Their brown wicker type flats. I love them!
ReplyDeleteIf I had legs like that i'd be riding my bike in my knickers.
ReplyDeleteback to reality.
xo em
p.s Here is Australia we would be pulled over for not wearing a helmet, definitely not our chosen attire.
that's so silly...
ReplyDeletebut so awesome that you stood up to it
Yay for girls (and boys) in skirts! Everyone looks so sweet and happy... lovely.
ReplyDeleteyou ladies all look so pretty!
ReplyDeleteLoved the photos, but i find a policeoficer totally right & loyal. There is a law that men can not drive a car having torso. For the same reason, not to distract female drivers. Ok, fun is fun, but there are lives of others involved, so I don't find this protest very clever ...
ReplyDeleteCall me whatever! :p
This is hilarious! Awesome!
ReplyDeleteGuys should be able to keep their heads straight. Can't you drive in a bathing suit? What's wrong with that? Same deal isn't it?

Joanna, your dress is so cute! Where did you find it?
ReplyDeletewow that's so crazy! haha every year boston has a "santas in speedo's" run and people run through their streets in the middle of december in their bikinis and speedos. haha i wonder how the cop would feel about that.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThis is great! What fun - and the girls (and guy) look so pretty!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, this is what cops in NYC are worried about these days? That's idiotic but kudos to everyone who 'protested' in such a pretty way!
ReplyDeleteThis has got to be my favorite Cup of Jo post yet! What a lovely group of women (and man) riding in skirts/dresses!
ReplyDeletethat is so awesome! what a fun & fashionable protest :)
ReplyDeletethat story is insane! but yay for riding your bike in a skirt, my favorite!
ReplyDeleteThe girl in the green shirt... totally Zooey Dechannel, right?
ReplyDeleteSo great! I love the spirit of the ride. I love the dress you wore. Where is it from
ReplyDeleteWell my grandfather stopped my grandmother many years ago in Germany and gave her a ticket for riding her bike next to her sister's and talking rather than being single file. They then started dating and a few months later she was pregnant and they were married....he left for the war a year later and she died while he was gone but two beautiful kids, 9 grandkids and however many lives were touched by what most would see as a ridiculous enforcement of rules...
ReplyDeleteMostly he was probably saying he was distracted.
I do like her cute floppy skirts.
We totally saw you guys pass Leroy St. while we were sitting on our stoop. We should have gone, looked like so much fun!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this more than you know - I have always admired a girl who can ride a bike confidentially (and skillfully) in a skirt -- tis' a right that should never be denied! what a lovely, fun, playful protest :)
ReplyDeletesuch a cute idea for a post! makes me want to go for a bike ride…. :)

ReplyDeleteI wore a skirt on my bike today!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard about this biking incident...and I can hardly believe that a police officer thought that he was right in pulling someone over for their outfit! How ridiculous! Thank you for showing the amazing and fun response that you partook in...I wish I could have joined!

ReplyDeletehttp://www.theage.com.au/photogallery/victoria/melbournes-world-naked-bike-ride-20100322-qoa8.html
I personally would opt for a skirt! I live in skirts and dresses and would never let this stop me from riding!
which one ar you? the girl in blue, with the brown shoes? you are so skinny!
ReplyDeletenot sure if you are aware of the "cycle chic" phenom crossing the globe, but of course, the danes know how to do it best.
ReplyDeletean article from a while back about "how to ride a bike in a skirt."

the photos of the fabulous danes are just as nice to look at, too.

ReplyDeleteWhy don't people where helmets? Not a single girl is wearing a helmet here! Forget the skirts, what about our heads? Two of my friends have gotten into bicycle accidents in the city and have their two front teeth gone...I think you should do a post on coolhelmets...
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome, so glad you shared!

I love this! Joanna, where are your shoes from?! I've been looking for a pair like them for ages. They look uber comfortable :)
ReplyDeletethat's so odd! but i love how they got together to ride their bikes in skirts..they all look great!
ReplyDeletefashionable, fresh, feminist - my favorite f-words. Love this, Jo.
ReplyDeletewhat kind of bike do you have, joanna?
ReplyDeleteThat's funny because I was just blogging about Minneapolis bicycle-culture. I know that European women bicycle in any type of clothing, but I've personally always found it to be a challenge. These great pictures of women in skirts on bikes has encouraged me to try it! Hopefully I won't get pulled over by a cop.
ReplyDeleteMaybe its just coz I am from India and belong to a pseudo-conservative society. But if you wear a skirt of a decent length there should be no problem. By decent I mean one that can fall in between your legs and cover up. If one is wearing a very short skirt which is bodycon and may ride up - well it may be one's right to wear whatever they want but its not over and above another's right to not get offended. And maybe, just maybe - it might be a bit much of for some people to witness something they dont expect to or want to.
ReplyDeleteJust saying.
You all look wonderful, great protest!
ReplyDeletethats crazy! how could men blame it all on the ladies :/
ReplyDeletesydsense.blogspot.com
Lovely post, makes me miss my Denmark days when I used to get everywhere by bike, often in a skirt and heels :)
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering what that bar is for is that is attached to your bike...?
wow, you are all worthy of being in the sartorialist Joanna. I just love that second last pic of you. you have lovely legs!!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe someone would take offense to a lady riding in a skirt, especially considering how revealing most bikinis are.
ReplyDeleteI am very disappointed by this post not one picture featured a helmut. As lovely as wearing a skirt on a bike is safety is more important.
ReplyDeleteHaha--I love this!!
ReplyDeleteMy fav way to ride my bike is in a skirt or dress! Silly cop!
ReplyDeleteIn general, we don't do helmets in the Netherlands, so it was very much 'Dutch Style' :-)
ReplyDeleteBut we definitely do skirts! Since, well, forever... Older ladies even have special seats (round on the front) which makes it easier to ride your bike wearing a skirt.
how ridiculous is that?! Can't he find something better to do with his time? Good for you guys!
ReplyDeletesomething's wrong with me? i love your blog, please don't take me wrong. in my honest opinion i don't seem to understand this: why would you like your daughter to be riding her bike wearing no halmets and flashing her underwear? why everybody thinks is cool?
ReplyDeleteI love how chic everyone looks (and I think I spy a wiksten dress on your friend...so pretty!).
ReplyDeleteOhhh, I think I missed a good downtownfrombehind shoot opp!! This looks like so much fun!
ReplyDelete#11 is my fave! lol @ #12 though
ReplyDeleteLOVE this!! yeah such a fun protest, nice and light-hearted, and dam everyone looks so chi with their bike and cute outfits!! looks like a lovely evening to be riding around.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great thing to do, how many of you were there?
ReplyDeleteSo cute! This is fun, funny AND totally necessary! Who does that officer think he is? The fashion police has no legal authority...
ReplyDeletehaha what awesome photos!
ReplyDeletePretty sure that story was proven to be a fake...apparently the young lady works for a bike company & was trying to market the bike she was allegedly stopped on? IDK http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2011/06/jasmijn_rijcken.php
ReplyDeleteGreat photos though, but ladies please wear your helmet!
Love the pictures. My favorite is the one of the man in the skirt (and TOMS!) I love the sticker too, "I LIKE THE WAY I BIKE." I want one of those. The story is ridiculous, oh NYC.
ReplyDeleteBikes and skirts/dresses are a stylish combo. And very New York! Keep at it! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with others about helmets!
ReplyDeleteI like the bike trend but do not like the trend of girls being too concerned about looking cute to wear a helmet! Tsk Tsk...
I would love to see a blogger make a statement about this.
(I do LOVE the idea of this protest though!)
Yay! You girls ROCK!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou are too cute!!
ReplyDeleteNo weekend post?
ReplyDeleteFlowy skirt, little bit o' lipstick, lotta bit o' biking and it's the perfect weekend
ReplyDeleteHow ridiculous of the cop! Living in NL, I can say nearly half the country are biking in skirts. My kids love it when my skirt is billowing up in the wind and my daughter sitting behind me tries to hold it down!
ReplyDeleteI love it! I used to ride my bike in a skirt/dress on campus daily!
ReplyDeleteYES! I love this idea :)
ReplyDeleteInstylation
To all the people telling these lovely...ADULT women to wear a helmet: there's no helmet law for grownups in NY, surely they are capable of assessing risk...and lastly, helmets do NOT increase cycle safety, good infrastructure does.
ReplyDeleteStop perpetuating this nonsense that helmets are the be all and end all of road safety & at the least let people decide for themselves. Thank you.
THAT IS INSANE!!! PLEASE VISIT MY BLOG!!!!
ReplyDeletejemimabakytgul.blogspot.com
Call me a big dork, but after knowing two people who have gotten in biking accidents in NYC in the last couple of weeks, all I could think were "Where are their helmets??"
ReplyDeleteTo Amsterdamize - I was one of the helmet commenters and I do agree with you that these women have the choice to decide on their own. I don't want to sound like I can tell them what to do.
ReplyDeleteNobody here said that helmets are the be all and end all of road safety. In my experience biking in a big city, good infrastructure will do nothing to stop insane drivers on the road and insane fellow cyclists on the bike path. Helmets are just a common sense way of protecting the most important part of our bodies. You can wear them or not, but I happen to think they are smart! :)
Those photos are so cute :). What a great way to support female cyclists.
ReplyDeletehttp://happenstanceandhappiness.blogspot.com
That's so awesome! Good for you guys!
ReplyDeleteI blogged about my experience riding in this ride (I was happy to meet Joanna too!) and I have pics of myself and other ladie swearing helmets, so simmer down: http://www.thejulieblog.com/2011/07/skirts-on-bikes-with-jasmijn-rijcken.html
ReplyDeleteI also want to note that Jasmijn, the accused skirt distractor, did not mention her relationship with any company that she works for when she addressed us and/or when she and I spoke casually before/during and after the event.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a coincidence that she's a sex kitten and a marketer. ;) I like her!
Stop obsessing about helmets! Bicycling is safe and healthy! Do you obsess over overweight people? And do you tell them they better loose that weight or else! In the USA a third of adults are obese & 17% of children are obese. Bicycling would be an excellent form of exercise for them. Even without a helmet! 112,000 people in the USA die annually from factors relating to obesity. By comparison under 700 people in the USA die annually from riding bicycles. How about children not wearing sunglasses? Do you worry about people not wearing sunblock. The sun's rays cause deadly damage to our eyes & skin. Especially to children. Do you continually chastise smokers? 435,000 people in the US die each year from smoking tobacco.
ReplyDeleteAfter wearing a helmet for 20 years, I stopped after a trip to Amsterdam. This obsession with helmets is like a religion! I put my faith in my good riding skills.
so cute!!!!
ReplyDeleteI ride my bike everywhere in Portland, often in a dress or skirt. Great post!
ReplyDeleteStupid exhibitionist bitches. Hope you will find your own rapist:)
ReplyDeleteI recently began riding a bike in Paris and I think MOST women ride in skirts! (Perhaps an exaggeration, but still!). Hooray for these women for standing up for a rather simple right. Funny how in the past women weren't allowed to wear pants.... oh how things change!
ReplyDeleteYou go girls! This should be a yearly event!
ReplyDeletehaha what an old fashioned cop!
ReplyDeletebeing dutch I am so proud the girl was dutch and to see this bike right ;) My favorite post of the week!
bike + dress so charming, love it
ReplyDeletehttp://halinje.blogspot.com/
Oh my God, we dutch girls all ride bikes in skirts! LOL! Great blogpost :-)
ReplyDeleteSo funny! My friends and I used to navigate this issue in college all the time. I don't remember any of us being pulled over by a campus cop, though. Ha.
ReplyDeleteJoanna, are those brown shoes from Steve Madden? I have the same ones and wear them instead of sandals in the summer. I ride my bike in dresses almost everyday. Except no wrap dresses or you'll flash everyone when the wind blows!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! And some super outfits.
ReplyDeleteLove this!! But why no helmets?
ReplyDeletethe step-through frame, according to dutch frame makers, were first made to accomodate a priest's robes, called priesterrijwiel, since women weren't originally considered the target market.
ReplyDeleteotherwise, there were many more swell-looking men--and women--who attended this event. ny press and the hub will most likely post a more complete selection of shots.
Love this! Such a cool post! I was in Amsterdam last weekend and I just love how cool Dutch people look on their bikes!
ReplyDeletehttp://bodieandfou.blogspot.com/2011/07/my-home-in-london-pallet-table.html
I was so interested when I saw your post and then incredibly disappointed that you chose to not wear helmets. I thought it was just for posing, then I saw the pictures of you on the street and realized you really thought it was appropriate to promote fashion over safety. Doubly sad considering you're a parent.
ReplyDeleteMy husband was in a hit and run accident while riding his bike recently, he was severely injured. I thank god he loves me enough to wear a helmet.
I really wish you would consider your message more carefully, you had an opportunity to promote safe biking and instead promoted irresponsible idiocy.
omg this is great!!!
ReplyDeletewhat a great idea and what a crazy cop. She did look fantastic so can understand the distraction.
ReplyDeleteThanks for an amazing blog xo from another Jo
Nice outfit! love it ;)
ReplyDeleteThe rapist comment was completely uncalled for, anonymous.
ReplyDeletei LOVE this! wish i had been there, my husband and i would have worn matching kilts! ;) happy fourth!
ReplyDeleteUm, you guys know that the original story of the girl getting harassed for biking in a skirt is a hoax, right?
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful way to protest!!
ReplyDeleteI am a Dutch girl as well and I do ride my bike in shorts, skinnies and (short) skirts, we ride our bikes that often, it's normal here in The Netherlands. So distracting? Never heard of that!
Love,
Nancy
Amazing! What a great response!
ReplyDeleteLovely pictures!!! Union Bicycles hope more and more women will ride their bike in future!

As a Dutch girl living in Amsterdam I am flabbergasted by this story! Recently we had 'The World Naked Bike Ride' in town. Not that that's a nice picture, but skirts blowing in the wind, wow!
ReplyDeleteWell done for this great skirt riding night.
I ride my Vespa with a skirt! Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteGreat Blog!!

love this! NYC cops would be passing out tickets left and right if they saw how the peeps here in Milano dress while riding bikes...so chic, heels and all. But as lovely as everyone looks, where are the helmets?
ReplyDeletepeeps, pretty please wear a helmet. Try this stylish ones..xx

ReplyDeleteI would love to buy a eletronic bike...but i have to confess that i fear cars around me! =/
ReplyDeleteJoanna...I'm from Brazil, and I love your blog!
she was distracting cars :D ?? so crazy. but a really nice way to protest
ReplyDeletehttp://nospetitesreveries.blogspot.com/
So many cute outfits!!! I would love to be so stylish on a bike : ) Great protest and the man in the sarong - now that's solidarity lol
ReplyDeletehttp://sisterbatik.blogspot.com/
I'm all for solidarity and women power, but I have to admit...I wouldn't want anyone to see up my own skirt on a bike...However, it's great that all these people got together to support this woman. That citation is absolutely ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteThey look so cute! I'm so nervous my skivvies would show, but maybe I just need to go for it and not care! The comments about helmets sure are passionate... I wear a helmet because I'm a klutz. End of story. xoxo
ReplyDeleteelena, that is me, haha! they are steve madden flats that i got ages ago. i looked on their site and it sadly looks like they don't make them anymore! xo
ReplyDeletethanks for all these comments! about the short skirts -- please rest assured that no one was flashing their underwear, ha! everyone's skirts were long enough (of course!!!!) to ride modestly. it's very easy to ride a bike in a short skirt and be very modest -- your legs don't really move up very high in a bike and you can easily ride without flashing anyone. i would never ever do that, eeks! :)
ReplyDeleteoooh it's crazy that the original story might have been a hoax! i'm going to look into that....i could actually see that, since i have written a bike in a skirt about 5,000 times and have never had a problem. i can't imagine a cop pulling someone over, which is why i was so shocked! going to google now :)
ReplyDeleteI'll admit, I'm a bit wary of riding my bike in a skirt. After seeing this post, I might have to brave it one of these days. Way to go, ladies!
ReplyDeletelove these photos, and I think all ladies and {man} look fabulous at their dress and bike :).
