Do or don't: Guys with beards

When Alex accidentally grew a beard three years ago (he had the flu), I told him he looked rugged and handsome. Surprised, he said I was the only woman he'd ever known who actually liked beards. But doesn't everyone love a good scruff? I'm curious: Do you prefer guys with beards or definitely not?

Today Alex wrote an article about what it feels like for a guy to have a beard. It was funny to hear a man's perspective! Read it here, if you'd like.

P.S. Before and after.

I beg my husband to grow a beard on a daily basis. It is the sexiest thing ever-- sadly he's the only man I know that doesn't like having one (too itchy, he says).

Love the way it looks, but much prefer to kiss a soft face. ;)

Beards are kind of becoming on some men. Some just can't pull them off.
So I'd say, pretty subjective there.

Salonie.

With. Out.
I do not care for facial hair.
I do not like it anywhere.
I do not like it a dude.
I do not like its attitude.

Cleanshaven is the way for me.
It's how a guy can get to me.

Obviously it's a personal choice. :)

I've never known my boyfriend without his beard and though I've seen pictures of him without it I'm not sure I'd recognize him if he suddenly shaved it off! It may not be for everyone but I love it- kissing isn't as scratchy as you might think girls!

My old boyfriend (I hate to say ex) realized he could grow an amazing beard when we were in college and proceeded to do so. Something about it made me absolutely swoon! Kissing him with the beard was thrilling.

The other great part about beards is that when the guy shaves it off, suddenly you have a brand new face to fall for all over again - it's wonderful cycle, in my opinion!

Question though: have you realized how many guys have red beards when their hair is nowhere that color?

LOVE a dude with a beard. i think it makes them look more manly and tough.

OH! I am MOST DEFINITELY a beard girl. My boyfriend currently has one, and I always joke that I will break up with him if he ever shaves it. He says he won't shave his beard if I promise to keep my hair long...so I guess it's a fair deal!

My husband has a beard and I think it's the sexiest frickin' thing. Fortunately, so does he. =) And yes, @In A Certain Fashion, he has a bunch of super-red hair in his beard but the hair on his head is almost black. So strange.

Alex looks great with his beard, Miss Jo. It looks like it belongs on him.

Alex rocks his beard. Seriously, he looks like he was born with one, it's so natural.

I'm all about bearded men--my boyfriend is Scandinavian-blonde, with a Viking-red beard. His head-hair and face-hair contrast one another in the most adorable way whenever he grows a beard. Thumbs up.

I LOVE a good beard. My husband was the first guy I ever dated who could grow a great beard (sidenote: is there anything sadder than a scraggly, wannabe beard?!) and I was instantly smitten. Now I pout whenever he shaves it off.

My husband has always had a goatee, but this fall he started to grow out a real, HUGE beard. I wasn't the biggest fan - I like the debonair trimmed beard a la Alex a little better. But he felt so manly, it was fun.
he's back to a trimmed beard, and I will never let him go facial hair-less again!

I remember in the 1980s my father grew a beard for a little while and my mother didn't like it. I encouraged it and thought my dad looked very handsome.
Today, I feel the same way - I love a guy with a beard. Now my boyfriend rocks it (don't read too much into that Freud). Every now and again I wonder what it would be like for him to convert back and shave his face, but he looks very mature and sexy with the facial hair that I'd always want him to grow it back.

Corrin said...

When I met my husband he had a beard; it was really weird when he first shaved it off and suddenly I didn't know his face.

But my favorite is when he lets the scruff grow out enough to be soft, but not a full-on beard (which is pretty much every Sunday after a weekend of not shaving). so sexy.

My father always had a beard, (never seen him without it) and I'm curious whether anyone thinks this factors into the preference?

And yes, Kate, oddly his beard was mostly reddish and his hair is not.

I love the beards! Hands down....love it! I guess its lately been a trend but its just another form of masculinity that really turns this girl on! I wish more men would embrace it and more workplaces would be more accepting of it.

But hope guys keep it goin!!!!

A kiss is not a kiss without a mustache (and a beard).
I've been with my husband for nearly 5 years, and have only seen him shaven once, for his birthday last year he shaved himself a mustache. But quickly grew it back because he thought everyone was staring at him. haha! I have to say I prefer his soft facial hair :) it's very becoming on him.

I absolutely always prefer a guy with a beard (if you can pull it off). I've been trying to convince one of my friends to stop shaving so he can grow one. I don't really know what it is about a beard; maybe it is that rugged allure, but give me a guy with a Robin Pecknold beard anyday and I'll be happy.

Beards = hot! My husband grew one shortly after we started dating and that was what hooked me! For a change, he shaved it into a goatee for New Years Eve and I almost cried.

I'm not sure if it's the ruggedness, the sex appeal, the furriness, the low maintenance attitude that goes with it, or the hint of red that resides in my husbands beard, but they are best male face accessory by far!

My live-in boyfriend has had a beard since he graduated high school fifteen years ago. I've never seen him without one, and I don't want to! I don't know that I love a beard on every guy (not all beards are equal, some guys just can't grow facial hair like others can), but I love it on him. I've even jokingly threatened to ask him to move out if he shaves it, because I love it that much. He promises he won't. After fifteen years of having a wicked thick beard we're both sure he'd have a very obvious beard tan-line under there.

Beards are a big YES. Mustaches are a no. Except my dad, he can have a mustache. Mainly because he's had it my whole life and I wouldn't know him without it. And he looks exactly like Omar Sharif so he pulls it off.

My husband grew a beard out of necessity when he had eye surgery and it was pretty hot I must say. And I am a big fan of what I call "weekend scruff". Not shaving means by Sunday night he has that super hot Bradley Cooper-esque scruffy face happening. LOVE it.

Rachel said...

I'm definitely a scruff-lover. I used to date a guy years back who told me the same thing (that I was the only girl who'd ever told him I liked a beard). I think they're more widely-adored now. Now if only my boyfriend could grow more than just patches :)

Funny, when my husband (then boyfriend) came back from studying in South Africa senior year of college, he had a beard, which he'd grown out of laziness. I thought he looked like Ernest Hemingway, tanned and rugged, and I wouldn't let him shave it. Ten years later, he's only shaved it off once, during law school for firm interviews. He looked like an alien. Much prefer the beard.

Joanna I completely agree with you - a beard is super-sexy! It took me turning 30 to realize it, but the scruffy, manly man is what turns my head these days.

Alex's article was fantastic. Please tell him that grey hairs in his beard will take him from looking like he is part of the 20's "tribe" into being "old sexy" like Clooney (i.e., it's a good thing). And he should not compare himself to Brad Pitt-greybeard, since that is a man that actually does NOT look good with a beard!

My dad has had a mustache for my entire life, so I would be disconcerted by that-- BUT. My boyfriend grows his beard out every winter (a throwback to when he biked to work everyday - built-in balaclava!) and I love it. I think part of what's fun is the seasonal transition. He has a babyface once spring hits and the weather warms up, then this cozy beard all winter that makes him seem almost jolly (though not white-haired or round-faced like Santa). I also like him with several days' worth of scruff. I only don't like facial hair when it's at the slightly grown out and very rough/sharp phase - no one likes beard rash from kissing their honey!

conversationpieces said...

Hmm no beards – a bit of stubble is good but no full-on Santa-like-ness! ;)

Sarah Winward said...

I love a nice full beard that is trimmed to still show the cheekbones and jawline of a man. My husband (eight years older than I am) has a beard. In fact, I have never seen him fully shaved! He used to trim really close when we met instead of shaving because it irritated his skin. I don't mind a full beard so he grew it out and never looked back.

He looks Middle Eastern naturally, though he's not. He has dark curly hair, deep set eyes, and very olive skin. He has a striking resemblance to Jesus, and gets told this daily usually by young people. And older people tell him he looks like Moses. Its a funny thing to guess which bible character someone is going to say when they start with "you look just like...". He gets told that he looks like just about any person that ever had a beard. (he has gotten charles manson too!).

Most male's that we meet take a liking to him immediately.I think part of it is admiration for his beard because it is full and dark in color. I think it is a trademark of his. He is a very gentle-natured man, that works both in law and art, but is also very rugged and plays sports. He will love reading Alex's article.

Beard men can look good beardless and non-beard men can look good with a beard, but there is always a way that they look best. Some few men look spectacular either way (Jon Hamm) but most men look better either with or without. My advice to men is to find out who you are and act accordingly.

You, my dear, are married to a beard man. He wears it very well.

I definitely think my boyfriend looks good with a beard! Sadly I have the same problem as Alisha. When ever we kiss its prickly and itchy.

i love when my fiance has a little scruff.. he says it does get itchy tho.. but it grows pretty fast when he shaves :) xo jillian

Oh, I loved his article! I love clean-shaven but I can definitely appreciate your preference for whiskers :)

JoL - Amazon freak-a-zoid said...

totally depends on the guy -

love a mustaches & goatee on hubs, but a nice just-shaved cheek is so scumptious, too!

but anything from 2 days after a shave until it is 'beard' length = one word only: OUCH

do no attempt to come near me until your scruff no longer causes me pain!

there is nothing sexier than a beard. mmm

My husband has had a beard for years and I love it. It definitely took some getting used to, but now I prefer it!

I was sooo glad when my hubby started growing his beard! he looks like a "real man", if that makes sense.. It just suits his face better, without the beard he looks like a teenager!

Clare Priest said...

If you've got it, flaunt it, I say! My husband has a lovely black beard and it really suits him. So, yes I am PRO BEARD!

Having said that, there's nothing worse than a patchy beard, so if you can't grow it thick and long, shave it off!

kez said...

I'm definitely a beard kind of girl! I love some fuzz on my man! :)

My husband has a beard, and the only time I don't like it is when he lets it go too long without a trim. Neat is fine, but hobo beard not so much.

Mary said...

Holy flippin' yes! The scruff is irresistible!

My boyfriend goes back and forth--he'll be clean-faced one day, have a beard the next week, and he even had just a mustache for about a week (which strangely grew on me after a couple days). I like it all! But my favorite is when he doesn't shave for about 4 days and has just a light scruff. It's so handsome :)

Congrats to Alex on the article. Quite a nice writing style. I never realized that he was so much older than you. My husband is 8 years older than I am. For an upcoming Motherhood Monday, perhaps you could explore how the age difference factors into parenting, your decision about when to have children, and worries about "when Toby is this old, you'll be this old." These are things I think about a lot. Thanks!

I love a beard...it's one of the things that first attracted me to my husband. That and his crazy wild hair. To each their own :)

Btw, I really enjoyed reading your husband's article and will pass it on to my husband. I think he'll love it too!

My boyfriend will more often than not sport a beard and it looks really great on him. We're in a long distance relationship so sometimes we go weeks without seeing each other. One particularly long stint he decided to grow it out and insisted on shaving it only after I got to see it. So, he flew to New York and this was the result (third picture down): http://currently-coveting.blogspot.com/2011/04/partners-in-crime.html

He shaved it and immediately after doing so he told me that his face looked too skinny without the very large beard. It had gotten to the point where the only people who complimented him were other dudes. I found that hilarious.

I'm a beard kind of girl. My sister always jokes that she knows I'll like someone more if he has a beard.

LOVE BEARDS! I've been with my boyfriend for almost 5 years, and he's had a beard for 4.5 years of that. He shaved it of for his 25th birthday last year just because he wanted to change it up on an big birthday like that. Low and behold it was back only 6 months later.

Always been a fan of the beard and finally my fella now has one! And have to agree with all the others - it really isn't scratchy to kiss or itchy to own once you're past the stubble phase! Tough it out men!!

My husband has been sporting a beard for years now, because I insist on it! He never really wore one before but I am just so much more attracted to him with one than without (although I do still love him without). He gets compliments on it all the time, too, because it's so thick and the hairs grow down instead of out. One time at a pumpkin patch, the guy working said his beard was "majestic", I kid you not :)

i LOVE a beard on a guy. Usually the first thing I'm attracted to. So masculine ;)

I love when guys have facial hair! But I guess it also depends on the guy. Some guys should just stay clean shaven. Ahem, Brad Pitt.

beth said...

BIG YES! i'd always known my boyfriend of 8 years to be clean-shaven, but when he was unexpectedly laid off, he grew one out of boredom. the best thing to come out of his time off! thankfully he kept it when he found a job :)

BEARD (but depends on the guy).

My fiance has had a beard for way longer than I've known him and I can't imagine him without one. He, too, gets told he looks like Seth Rogan (which, along with Alex, he DOES NOT...although he actually kind of looks like Judd Apatow).

i always beg my fiance to grow a beard, he said he would grow one for the wedding, but now he's wavering...

loved alex's article, i'll have to start following his writing as well! :)

I LOVE my guy with a beard. Sadly, he doesn't like to keep one for too long after I beg and plead him to grow one. In contrast, his brother loves having a beard but his wife hates him with facial hair. Lose-lose. :(

I love me some well-trimmed scruff. Nothing that can house small animals, just a little scruff, a week's growth is my favorite. :)

I love a man with a good scruffy face. My husband shaved his beard a few months ago, and I did NOT like it. He looks much sexier with it.

My husband was so happy that I liked scruff so that he wouldn't have to shave daily. I now get treated to a winter beard each year. I love it.

I LOVE (love, love) scruff - or even sometimes a full beard! Most guys do get a little itchy the longer it gets, but a few days of no shaving = perfection!

My husband grew a beard two years ago because it was Christmas and he wasn't shaving on vacation. I have never let him go back. Every once in awhile he asks me if I still like it and I tell him he's stuck with a beard forever. I feel like I wouldn't recognize him without it now.

LOVE a good beard!

I have a theory that beard-loving skips a generation. For example, my maternal grandfather did not have a beard and my mom married a guy with a beard. My dad (ya know, the guy my mom married) had a beard while I was growing up, so I tend to be more attracted to guys sans beard.
Just a theory though...

LOVE BEARDS! Pretty much every man I have dated, I have convinced to keep or grow facial hair. My husband has had his beard seven years and going strong! I really don't get the whole "women hate beards" thing... to me that's one of the first things that attracts me to a guy.

Little Laura said...

I LOVE beards! I asked my husband to grow one while we were still dating and his argument was that growing one out would make him look dirty. But I convinced him and he loved how low maintenance it is to have one that he's had one for over three years. People asked him if he was going to shave it for our wedding, but I wouldn't let him. :)

No mustaches, though...unless it's my dad.

DO!! But it doesn't suit every man. Just saw a man today on the street that I wanted to jump on!!

it really depends...when my brother tries to grow a beard it looks patchy and gross. but the guy i'm in like with grows an awesome beard. it's so manly!

I love a beard! I'm from Michigan too, so maybe it's a Michigan girl thing, that whole image of woodsy and manly like Alex quoted you saying in his article. Love 'em!

They aren't for everyone, but I love how my husband looks with a beard! Or even a goatee. He keeps it neat and short and it is a really good look for him.
