Have a dreamy weekend.

My darlings, what are you up to this weekend? Alex, Toby and I are going to our friends' house for tacos tonight. Also, I recently saw the movie Blue Valentine. It was intense (and hard to watch!) but incredible, and drew such a realistic and heart-wrenching portrait of two people, who had truly loved each other, going through a terrible break-up. I thought it was amazing and can't stop thinking about it. Have you seen it? I'm curious to hear your thoughts. Meanwhile, here are just a few fun links from around the web...

Three eyeliner tricks.

Fudge popsicles.

Color!

Loving these ($50!) wedges for the summer.

Guitar onesie.

How the seasons really work.

New York City.

Have you read the book My Mom, Style Icon? It's funny, sweet and inspiring.

Have a wonderful weekend. xo
(This is a satellite photo of nighttime in Europe.)

Blue Valentine WAS hard to watch, no? I thought the acting was awesome. I watched it without my husband, and we get got home I was like "you need to see this random movie I just watched!"

I saw Blue Valentine, but I wasn't crazy about it. I think the reasons are three-fold:

    1. I was in an exceptionally good/perky mood when I walked into the theater. Which is obviously not how I walked out of the theater.
    2. I've never had a seriou breakup.
    3. The movie was so, so hyped up! When you hear nothing but amazing things, you can't help but be disappointed.

Normally, I'd consider give it another shot (I loooove Michelle Williams), but I just don't think it's for me. I wasn't interested in it enough the first time to consider trying it a second time.

  14. How funny, my husband & i saw Blue Valentine last weekend! Seriously difficult to watch, but so well acted by Ryan & Michelle and what seemed to make it so poignant was how you only ever saw the blissful beginning of their relationship & falling in love and then the gut-wrenching awfulness of just not being in love anymore.

  15. R.G., the hunkiest hunk of them all, was incredible in Blue Valentine. Even though it was unusually depressing and ended without closure (well at least I thought) I found it relatable and memorable. XO Valerie

  18. I had similar thoughts about Blue Valentine. So well done, and also pretty depressing! They both did an amazing job and it's pretty cool to know how involved they were with the project--living in the house and all. Have a great weekend, Joanna!

  20. Oh my, I just couldn't watch Blue Valentine after they went to that hideous "theme" hotel room. I have no idea what happened, but it was just SO depressing at that point. But, RG is gorgeous isn't he? The satellite photo of Europe certainly makes all of this, down here on Earth, look small. Happy weekend, Joanna...

  22. I watched Blue Valentine with my boyfriend as a part of our Valentine's Day weekend. Big mistake. I kept having to rub his knee and repeat "it's ok, that's not going to be us."

Valentine's Da aside, it was fantastic. Sad, but so realistic and well-acted!

  23. i wanted to see that movie! now I have to lol. That picture is so beautiful!!

  24. I really enjoyed Blue Valentine, but it definitely left me with a feeling of sadness. The cast was great and I loved learning the backstory of how they filmed the movie (they really all "lived" together for a period of time...read more about that if you haven't!). A definite beauty in several scenes.

    woohoo for taco night!

    Ahem.

Yes, saw Blue Valentine - excellent & harrowing.

Trying to understand what is "random" about it. I am getting old. Off to look up why it means something else. I always forget.

    Sigh.

    Have a great weekend, all.

  27. I watched Blue Valentine for the first time last weekend. I loved it and watched it a couple of times before returning it to Netflix. I still can't get it off my mind. I thought it was so beautiful. Their "You and Me" song is haunting. I can't shake it for some reason!

  30. Blue Valentine was super intense but good. I thought the husband (forget the character's name) was a really good guy deep down and was just going through a rough time. It was sad to me that the wife just kind of gave up on him. I understand falling out of love but she really was kind of a bitch about it. The actors really did a great job. Happy weekend!

  34. Blue Valentine was AMAZING, but I do agree it was a bit hard to watch. Beautiful acting, though.

  35. My husband and I saw Blue Valentine in the theater in January or February and it really was heart-wrenching. I'm sure my husband was wondering what went through my head during the movie because I was definitely crying. Such sympathetic characters, even Michelle Williams'.
We walked out of the theater and when I asked my hubs what he thought of it, he just said, "I don't know what he did that was so wrong." How do you describe a change of heart to someone who's never had one?

I still think about it often and it was like six months ago.

Loved Blue Valentine; more their performance than the actual content. It was just so darn depressing. Not just the falling out of love, but their lifestyle. The part where I really lost it though was at the end where the daughter was crying and running after him. Oh man, that killed me. The thought of my little guy asking for his daddy if we were to ever separate. My eyes were still swelled up the next morning!

  38. Best links ever! I was just thinking about homemade popsicles. And I love that sweet book preview on Amazon. This weekend I want to go sailing on the harbor in Boston and eat banana bread. 39. yes! i just watched blue valentine this week with my sister. the film is absolutely amazing! from the storyline to the acting. it's so genuine. it had to watch it again the next day. there is so much to think about...

  40. Watching Blue Valentine was like watching Precious. Extremely hard to watch throughout certain scenes. I thought some of the sex scenes were a bit "uncomfortable" to watch with anyone but alone...an very vulgar. I love Ryan Gosling, but I didn't care for this movie at all. I'm glad I didn't even try to drag my man to see it, he prolly would of walked out.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I really loved Blue Valentine - it was hard to watch though! Very realistic, and I think coming from a family with fighting parents, it made it all the more real to see the other side of the situation. I was 100% bawling by the end, but I love Michelle and Ryan.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Anonymous10:03 PM

finally, a comment about the "sex scenes", agree totally. made me unable to recommend the movie to anyone! sorry. great acting and storyline but can't say it was great since it lacked taste. can understand the original rating that it had.

  45. Saw the movie. It helps that Ryan Gossling is the most beautiful man ever (even when he is balding and wearing glasses that look just like the ones my dad used to wear). It was such a sad movie, the reality of divorce and how hard it is and how some people just drift. It reminds me to COMMUNICATE honestly with my husband always and don't allow room for us to grow apart!

  60. WARNING: SPOILER ALERT

Watched Blue Valentine a couple weeks ago and thought it was so beautiful. I have only been in one real relationship (and still in it) so you would imagine it is hard to sympathise with the characters but so beautifully written that I had compassion for both. It is so funny how a couple commenters thought that William's character was a bitch when I thought that Gosling's character had more issues, like his comment when the dog died was just so mean. Understandably I think when you find out that his daughter is not really his - although he went into the relationship knowing that. They just didn't seem to understand each other anymore and I think was the tragedy. It would be interesting to see the inbetween story though. Was there are moment or a process when it all started going downhill?

    ReplyDelete
  61. That onesie made me want to have a baby to put in it right now! So damn cute! And I'd totally try that first eyeliner trick, but the second would be reserved for stage and the third would be reserved for crazy people.

  74. It may be a hard movie to watch - but their acting is superb. They portray the rejection, gut-wrenching pain, everyday cruelties and sense of coming lose at your core that comes with impending divorce.
Whilst everyone's experience in divorce is different, 'Blue Valentine' is extraordinary in calibre of the performances, the raw honesty...Ryan Gosling was robbed an Oscar nomination.

  86. I LOVED Blue Valentine. It's the first movie I've bought in a while. I heard that the family lived in that house together before filming which would explain why they are so perfectly intimate together.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I thought that it was one of the more courageous movies about marriage. There is a whole culture of people out there who get married really young when life is seen through the eyes of youth and invinciblizm. When we can do no wrong. then we grow, change and life gets real. I felt drawn to the flaws of each character. They both started out with great intentions towards each other but ended up choosing self over the other person. Sad. Made me remember that as a priority in my own relationship.

The scene with the young daughter at the end almost took me over the edge. SO heartbreaking.

I can't decide how I feel about the ending -- I saw an interview with Ryan Gosling where he said they may not be broken up, that they'll get back together to talk and work things out. Which made me feel somewhat okay through those final scenes, but still so tough to watch. I think he should've been nominated for an Oscar.

I don't understand the comments about Michelle's character being such a bitch. In the movie she worked full time and then had a house to take care of, a child and a husband. She seemed exhausted! Plus, it appeared that she had put her own professional dreams on the back burner to support her family. I think she felt resentful and at the same time, guilty for feeling resentful because he stuck with her despite being pregnant.

Saw Blue Valentine! All I can say is, ARRGGGHH!! I walked out of the theater soo MAD!! (the actors did a great job by the way) The movie is so real--so true to life about why people get divorced. I felt like they just gave up, which unfortunately is what alot of us do way too often in life/marriage. It's a great movie cause it made you think, but I HATED it!!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Alisha5:16 PM

To Anonymous: Michelle Williams was totally a bitch for just giving. What the heck! OPEN YOUR FREAKING MOUTH AND TELL YOUR PARTNER/HUSBAND WHAT YOU WANT/ARE THINKING/FEELING!! HE CAN'T READ YOU'RE FREAKING MIND!! That was my problem with her, and she was listening to people who were negative. She was already married, so it shouldn't be so easy to walk away. AND, if she had exhausted all options like: counseling/therapy, actually talking about issues, and giving her partner a chance to see/understand how she's feeling and nothing changes, THEN you may start considering options. She didn't really try. She was only thinking about herself.

  117. we saw it a few weeks ago. kind of a spoiler alert for who ever hasn't seen it.... I couldn't stop thinking about it for a while after either! I felt haunted by them and their heartbreaking love story. I felt so sorry for them and their reality. it was so honest and real even though it was something so foreign to me. I felt especially sorry for her bc her loneliness was almost palpable and sad for him bc he just loved her so much and could not see that she was like...drowning. and their sweet girl. omg. that little girl killed me. after I saw it and it was so late, I wished it wasn't so late so I could find something to do other than go to bed with that film in my head.

  119. Re: the color-blocking: so timely! Just yesterday, I saw this gorgeous Asian woman walking down the street wearing a hot pink tank and candy apple red pants. I loved the bold color combo, and I was inspired to try putting red and pink together.

  120. Oh my gosh. I watched Blue Valentine this weekend and it was really great, but just left me with an empty feeling. Movies like that make me so mad!! Ha. I love a happy ending. But, the acting was awesome.

  121. I saw it in the theater with my husband and he was traumatized. Just last night, I was talking about it with a friend and I told my husband to tell her how he felt about it and he said it was really depressing. In an interview for the movie, Ryan Gosling said it was a companion piece to 'The Notebook'. I love him and can't wait to see him in 'Crazy, Stupid, Love'!

  122. I saw it last night with a friend and as the credits rolled we just sat in silence until finally getting upset with the lack of closure the end provided. It was so sad, but I also slowly started to really hate Michelle Williams' character and was surprised to read some of the comments here in her favor. To me, she wasn't acknowledging her feelings, stringing Dean along and not acting thankful for his dedication as a father all these years to another man's child. She seems to dwell only on the negative, which I hated about her! She also seemed so selfish!

  123. blue valentine was one of my favorite movies so far this year. it was beautifully acted and filmed. michelle williams deserved the oscar, and ryan gosling deserved an nomination at least. and i love the story behind it, with them living in a house together in between shooting the early and later scenes. very real, both characters had moments where they were likable and when they were not. a good reminder to focus on the positivesin your relationship every day, and not take things for granted.
