DIY wedding hair: Gibson roll
My dears, I'm excited to share our second wedding hair tutorial! My friend (and hair genius) Caroline adores this elegant twisted roll--and swears it's easy enough for brides to do themselves. So, we met at my favorite West Village wedding shop, and the wonderful Jamie Beck took photographs. Doesn't her hair look straight from the 1940's? So romantic.
Here are Caroline's steps, if you'd like to try it out...

This hairstyle is perfect for a black-tie wedding or to show off a pretty neckline--and it's great for girls with curly hair. It's super easy; I promise with the teensiest bit of practice, you'll be able to do it in less than five minutes!
1. Gather your hair into a low ponytail and secure with a rubber band. You want the ponytail to be pretty tight.
2. Next, slide the rubber band down the ponytail a little, so there's space between the rubber band and your scalp.
3. Create a little "hole" in the area above the rubber band. Make sure not to poke all the way through; you just want to make a little "nest" in your hair (which you'll use in step 5).
4. Twist the length of your ponytail, like you would if you were making a bun.
5. Begin tucking your ponytail down into the little nest you made for it. (To make mine a little different, I tucked the hair off center, so it was slightly asymmetric.)
6 and 7. Keep tucking and rolling your ponytail into the nest...
8. Once you have all your hair hidden and tucked away, pin it in place with bobby pins. Don't forget to pin the sides of the hairstyle as well. Then spray your hair with some hairspray, and take along extra bobby pins for touch-ups!

Voila! Isn't it beautiful? Would you consider this wedding look? If you're already married, how did you wear your hair at your wedding? xo
P.S. More pretty hair tutorials...

In the wedding photos, Caroline's wedding dress is by Ivy & Aster from Lovely, a bridal boutique in the West Village. The hair piece is by Untamed Petals, available at Lovely, as well. Her jewelry is from her own line, Brvtvs, and her lip color is NARS lipstick in Manhunt--appropriately!:)

Beautiful! I would absolutely wear this for ballet class also.
I'm in love with that dress!
this is gorgeous and I, too, love that dress. For my wedding, I had a simple bun and I think it was perfectly appropriate for my Jamaica wedding.
Love the hair and really love the dress. gorgeous.
i know, isn't the dress incredible???!!!
love the dress andshoot, and i will drf try the hair! maybe not for my wedding since i'm horrible at styling my hair, but maybe i'll get it down for future events and parties!

One of the bridesmaids of a wedding I was in did her hair like this... inst it beautiful. So simple and easy but stunning.
Ah, what simple beauty!
yay! I tried the last wedding style for my brother's graduation and it held up nicely. I can't wait to try this one!
I would actually love to wear this hairstyle any day, although for a wedding it is perfect too.
And that dress!!!!
beautiful!
i think it is a gorgeous wedding look and would be pretty for day-to-day too! very chic.
Gorgeous!!! Why does my hair never turn out like this when I try to do it? On another note, her wedding dress is beautiful!!!!

I do something similar to create the rolled look but will have to try this method as it looks neater. And you are so right, I'm curly-haired and this is perfect!
so beautiful

I'm trying the hair style right now, but I can't seem to get what is meant by tucking in... I have long hair as well, but once I get to step 5, I'm done :(
Wow. The hair, the dress, the photos...the giant mirror with those floral prints! Seriously well done guys. Too pretty.
Love this tutorial, going to try this today! I love her hair, all those cool highlights at the bottom and that one platinum streak underneath!
love your blog & your personal style!

ahhh.. this is absolutely breath taking!!!!! beautiful, i need to try it!

Love, love, love the dress! I'd to wear that for my wedding...some day. :)
Lisa, the tucking part can sound sorta confusing but I promise it's easy. You just sort of tuck the ponytail into the little nest you made. Try starting with the end of your ponytail and just sort of stuff it into the space, and roll the hair at the nape of your neck up to cover it. Does that make sense? Keep trying, sometimes it takes a little practice to figure out what works best for your hair!
Thank you for sharing! I always LOVE to try out your hair tutorials. This one seems pretty simple and the results are lovely! I can't wait to give it a try! <3
So beautiful! And the model is simply gorgeous in her lovely dress!
these posts are always my favorite; that model is just insanely gorgeous!
aaand i just realized that caroline IS the model....even cooler.
I absolutely love this! I have a wedding this weekend and next weekend and having to really style my hair in this Texas heat is not what I want. Thanks for putting this...it looks beautiful, classy, elegant and easy!
This is a really elegant hairstyle. I love it!
Thants so lovely! I will try it for sure, thanks for sharing!
Ira
You should do a makeup tutorial. Her makeup is gorgeous!
Wow everything is gorgeous and perfect about these photos! I want to get married... NOW ! :-) Thanks for the post Jo! X Mandy and the name of my blog is: MENNEPEN
Joanna, I would love to read a post where you and Caroline show what's in your makeup bags!
I love it ! It's perfect !
Your hair tutorials are FABULOUS! I always had the most boring hair....long and straight. I can actually do these! Keep 'em comin! :)
I LOVE your hair tutorials! This one I can actually do. I have long hair, but it's layered! Any other bun or updo tutorials for those with layered hair?? I have such a difficult time with this when I am too hot to leave my hair down!
Thank you for this fun tutorial!
I love these hair tutorials, but this one ... this one is less descriptive (in pics and words) than the ones from past. How do you get the rolls from the front of your head? The "nest" roll is only in the back, so how do you have pretty rolls starting from your hairline going back?
I love these tutorials! I nailed the last one and it is now my go to didn't-wash-my hair look. I am looking forward to doing this one!
For my wedding I had my hairstylist copy Ashley Judd's hair in the formal scene of Double Jeopardy. I loved it for the then-me, but it doesn't fit my personality now.
I love how secure this is once it's all rolled and pinned - you could dance all night and never have to worry about your bun falling out!
oh joanna, this post is the highlight of my day! i've been looking high and low for a tutorial for this romantic summer 'do....so excited to rock this look all season long. thank you!
xo,

so pretty!
Pamela, when I rolled from the back, the sides just naturally tucked under to form a roll all the way around. But, if that didn't happen for you, try rolling the sides of your hair as well as the back section. If your hair is thick, you'll probably have to do this. My hair is pretty fine but I have a lot of it, so it just sort of rolled into itself naturally. Keep playing with rolling and pinning the sides and you'll get the hang of it!
I love it! Did she roll the sides of her hair first before she made the ponytail? It looks different on the sides in the example pictures! Just want to make sure I understand so I can get it right!
This is incredible easy! I did it at my desk at work while reading your blog :)
This is so beautiful, so sweet! I feel like I could never make it look so pretty myself but I love it for a wedding look. I wore my hair down and curled for my wedding, which I loved but this would so do the trick as well!
And how are your friends so gorgeous!?! Caroline, you are so beautiful!
I had someone do my hair for my wedding last summer because I knew I would be a bit too nervous to tackle it on my own, but I think even I might have been able to pull this off. I am loving this series! The hair, the dress, the photos, just beautiful. Am definitely going to try and recreate this.
Absolutely beautiful!! Simple and romantic... and what a lovely dress, too!
Oh my gosh, I ADORE that dress!
Kate

As with all Jamie Beck photos, I keep waiting for some part of one of these image to move. ha!
Your friend Caroline is so gorgeous. Love the hair--very pretty. My wedding gown is by Ivy & Aster, too. The "sweet pea" style. All of their gowns are so lovely and well-made.
Love the dress! I love the tutorials but I have short hair now and need a cute style for that cut please!!!!!
I love it. I would do it, but my hair neveeeeer grows past my shoulders :( Never has. Plus it's baby fine! If onlyyyy this could work on me!! love.
Taylor, this style is perfect for shorter hair, it's actually better because you won't have as long of a ponytail to tuck! My hair is really fine too, it looks a lot thicker in photos! You should try it!
So lovely! I think I may steal this idea for my bridesmaids. I can't really tell...is it a center part? I don't think I would really care for that, but pulled straight back might work. Your model is beautiful!
I love the look......classic!
I love these hair tutorials and have been able to do all of them, but not this one. Which is breaking my heart, because this is probably my all time favourite hair look. Like a few of the commenters, I don't get how the twists at the sides appeared? They weren't there in the ponytail pictures? If I don't get them by simply tucking in the ponytail, should I roll the sides before doing the ponytail?
Beautiful hair, dress, and photos!
I dearly love this hair do! It's elegant and classy. Thank you!
Love,
Camie
http://lovecamie.blogspot.com
the back of that dress is insane. and with the stunning do... perfection. makes me want to get married all over again so i can steal this look. :)
Carina, you can barely see the sides starting to roll over in the pics for steps 6 & 7. The way i tucked my hair, the roll just naturally occurred, but you might have to roll the sides up and over a little on your own and pin them. Mine formed naturally I think because I tucked the ponytail all along the length of the pocket I made, not just in the center. Hope this helps!
Love the romantic style.. Beautiful!
these only work on white girls w/ thin hair : (
hence it's a no go if you're hispanic with thick hair.
i love all of these.
Oh, Jo! I just love these hair tutorials of yours. Definitely one of my favorite features on an already favorite blog.
P.S. Just bought the Forever21 shoe knockoffs you suggested from a few posts ago + they rock! Thank you ever so much for the suggestion. xo Lola
no weddings or other such formal events in my foreseeable future, but I'm thinking this'd be a great everyday updo for the hot summer days with just a tank top and a maxi skirt. Going to try it this week for sure (though I'm not sure how all the layers in my hair will react to my attempt to tuck them in place)
http://nomadic-d.blogspot.com
Oh, I love these pictures! The featured hair-do is simple yet stunning and at first glance reminds me of a look from the Civil War period. It's a treat when styles from past eras become popular again.
Thanks for posting it all!

I LOVE the look! It's a gorgeous hairstyle and it's amazing how quick and easy it can be pulled off. You really pulled it together nicely with the hair accessory :)
Thank you for posting this! I will definitely have to try this on myself.

love this! beautiful.
What a sweet and romantic updo. I decided on leaving my hair down with soft waves. No vail but did pin a fresh Gardenia in!
Love that dress!
Wow, gorgeous hair photos!! And such a great tutorial too. It looks not too difficult to do!

This is absolutely divine - just need to encourage my hair t gorw a little longer so I can try it out!
I love this and it would be perfect for so many outfits I have. But I too am getting stuck at the tucking in of the twist. My husband says I've almost got it. Maybe a follow up video on this one? Pretty please?
Gorgeous. I love these tutorials, Joanna;)
wow looks so pretty :)

Hmmmm, i'm not sure I understand how the rolling part works? Do you just keep re-tucking the hair into the same hole you made?
although i have always hated my ears and therefore never liked to wear my hair up, i knew with the humidity i would have to - and i LOVED it!

Could she be a prettier model? So gorgeous. Now what about hairdos for those of us who are trying to grow our hair out but aren't quite there yet?
I am loving the hair tutorials your sharing. My wedding day has been and gone (celebrated our 2nd anniversary earlier this year), but I'm still always looking for new and interesting ways to style my hair for special occasions. I love this style!
I love your hair tutorials, Joanna!
thanks! xoxo
Very pretty and the dress is gorgeous.
I always get caught up following the links at the bottom of your posts! I assume that it's an automatic thing, but I just spent 20 minutes (that I was supposed to be doing productive things with!) looking through your blog for hairstyles. Thanks for always keeping it interesting, and giving me an excuse to slack off!
I have an appointment at Lovely for next Friday...can't wait!!!
Had a lovely weekend with your sister on Shelter Island and got rave reviews for the Cup of Jo inspired up do I wore to the wedding. And it was so easy, I did it between nursing and building a duplo spaceship.
Love the hair, but i think i love her dress even more!
I don't own bobby pins! Must sort that out....but I am in desperate need for some free-flowing wedding hair inspiration!

I'm going to try this out.
I love your posts on simple hairdos.
I have always loved decorating my hair with pretty clips and matching them to my outfits since I was very young.
Unfortunately the last time I made what I thought was a nice hairstyle my friend asked my why I'm sporting the Captain Jack Sparrow look.
ahh so gorgeous. id wear this on a daily basis if i could ever figure out how to do it. heading now to my bathroom mirror.
looks amazing. i'll have to try this with my asian hair and hopefully it'll work :) x
looks adorable!

I absolutely LOVE this hairstyle! It's simple yet so elegant! Great Post! I will have to experiment for fun at home :)

I love this! When I had long hair, I did something similar for formal occasions (or when it was hot). You have so many talented and beautiful friends!
I wore my hair how I always do- straightened. And it was a bob-length at the time.
Boring, but it made me feel grounded. I really wanted to look like myself, just more polished. Not glamorous, but I like looking back at the photos and thinking "yes, that looks like me!" and not some character-version of myself.
lovely. I wore my hair simliar to this for my wedding. I'm going to try it myself this weekend for a bridal shower brunch on Sunday.
Pretty!
P.S. I love Ivy and Aster and I love Lovely. I'm in the process of buying one of their dresses there right now!
Joanna, is your friend using a foam tube to support the roll (I think I see a white one peeking out in the last couple of pictures). If so, any tips on how to incorporate that? thanks!
love the dress and shoot..I absolutely LOVE this hairstyle!looks amazing.
pnr status
On a whim I just decided give this a go. You're right - 5 minutes (maybe less!). Et voila! It's gorgeous and sturdy. Now to just find a pretty floral pin to tuck in... This will become one of my staples, thanks! :)
Jennine, we didn't use any foam rolls for this hairstyle, it's all just my own hair rolled into itself. The white you see is actually a light blue streak I have in my hair, it just looks sort of white in the photographs. You could use a foam roller but it's actually quite easy to just tuck and roll your own hair like it says in the how-to steps :)
Thanks for clarifying, Caroline! I will give it a try this weekend ;)
Thank you! Tried it this morning and love it. Super easy and surprisingly- it worked well and looked nice even done with my wet hair this morning! Best, Athena
I was looking at the photos and thinking what just happened? This is a lie! They must have photoshopped it! But reading the steps makes it much clearer. I do love the hairstyle though and I think it would be lovely for a spring wedding with some floral ornamentation, not sure if I would opt for a hair piece or fresh flowers though.
Her hair is beautiful and so is the dress! It's a very pretty style.
I would have too much hair to be able to do that. On my wedding day I had part of my hair down and the front part up and all curled up in a beaded circle/crown thing. I always put my hair up, so I pretty much have "wedding hair" all the time LOL! My hubby loves my long hair, so I wore it down for him. :)
i had a very short hairdo when I got married (35 years ago!) so there weren't many options. sometime I'll post a wedding picture on my blog....
Gorgeous look that is EASY...what more could anyone ask? Lovely photos, as always with their tutorials.
Your tutorials on how-to-hair-do's makes me want to grow my hair out! The styles are always so pretty, and so beautifully photographed. Thank you :)
Brilliant! Thank you for sharing :) I love that you called the little hole above the rubber band a nest- too cute :)
I tried this hairstyle last night, and now I'm wearing it at work today because I wanted to see how it would hold up for tomorrow, when I plan to wear it to the wedding I'm going to! Thanks!
This is gorgeous! I adore the Caroline hair tutorials - keep 'em coming!
I love your hair tutorials but i think it would be even better if there was video to demonstrate.s
i tried this today and can't believe how lovely and simple it was! it took less than 3 minutes thanks to spiral hair pins (i think they're made by goody?), and with one quick spritz of hairspray before styling, it stayed put the whole day- even through a windy bike commute! thanks for posting, these are such brilliant tips!
I love her hairstyle, totally sweet, but i think big dress like that requires more polished look, or bigger hair do. Don't you think...?
I do like the dress, & do, not together though...
;)
very beautiful! I think it's a great summer look, too. Will definitely make an attempt at this.

this is really pretty - thank you for sharing!
awesome! i just tried this. super easy, took all of 5 minutes to recreate. couple of bobby pins and you're good to go. i have med length hair and its layered and had no problems. just keep twisting and tucking!
Whow thanks for that tutorial. It's look lovely and so simple...
I tried too. Perfectly romantic
fabienne
lovely. and again, i wish i had long hair :: sigh::
Awesome!
I would love to know what style bracelet Caroline is wearing in the photos? I looked through her website but can't tell which one she had on. Thanks so much!
xoxo, Meg
Success! I tried again today and did it! I learned two things:smaller width hair tie, and get those bobby pins Jo has mentioned. I did add a bit to the side twist before pinning, but it held all day and looked great. So good, in fact, that my husband randomly came up to me while we were shopping Ikea and told me how nice my hair looked!
Meg- the bracelet is new and will be available on the site in a few weeks!
This hair tutorial made no sense to me
A perfect hair combined with a perfect gown. Having this on your wedding will surely makes you the prettiest bride ever exist
Here what i found -> vision correction
this is the first tutorial where i went wtf 1/2 way through. This one needs a video. How she got from a low ponytail to having either side of her head twisted, is beyond me.
thnks for the hair tutorial! beautiful gown!

omg. I am obsessed with changing my daily hairstyles. so excited i found your blog!
I'm going to slowly move backwards to older posts and try every one!

Wow, when my hair is a little longer I'm going to try this, and possibly cancel my hair stylist for my wedding day. Thanks!
So pretty!

Beauuuuutiful dress. I think chiffon is extremely romantic! Love the knot at the back.
Thanks for the hair tutorial, I'll try it but with two ponytails instead of one, because my hair is still a bit too short.
ah, I just did it! and I even have thick hair! :)
thank you for posting - I love all of your hair tutorials!!!

That would be perfect for girls with a very lovely neckline, nice for summer..It's nice that it's really a step by step tutorial..
One of the bridesmaids of a wedding I was in did her hair like this... inst it beautiful. So simple and easy but stunning.
This isn't working for me either. I can't figure out how the hair is rolling on either side when you just pull it into a straight ponytail. I wish the words were directly under the photo so I could follow along a little better.
OH!!! You tuck in the curled ponytail from the top!! I was tucking from the bottom, near the nape of the neck.

Oh! How lovely! I just found this, I was searching for easy up dos for my military uniforms... I have medium length hair, and this works so perfectly. It is not the despicable sock-bun (seriously. You wrap your hair around a sock then tuck it under the sock to make a bun), and it looks so nice! Totally wearing my hair like this to work!
Hi Jo!
I really really love the hair tutes you post on your blog. Only thing is I have really short hair and am running out of ways to style my hair - it's getting quite boring... (identical to this haircut http://johnjohnsaidit.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/1309216058-77.jpg)
It'd be so lovely if you could find ways to do a post or two occasionally on different hair lengths and how to style it for your readers who don't have long hair and can't use these tutes (despite how great they are!)
xx
Hi Jo
you have a nice informative blog. Hair styles are amazing. great job !!!

Wow, I just tried this, totally not believing it was going to work. Then I looked in the mirror and gasped! I can't really figure out how my hair felt so messy and bumpy as I was putting it up, but then looks like...well, like the pictures! Fabulous up-do. I can't wait to wear it to a party.
I'm not even getting married! but I have extremely long hair and I'm doing this a lot now! thank youuuu
It's gorgeous I love it.
This didn't work for me the first few (ahem...10) times I tried it, but I just got it! If you're having trouble, try moving the ponytail a bit higher up to start with - the extra hair between the nape of the neck and the ponytail is what makes it work, and I wasn't giving myself enough of it the first few times I tried. Also, in order to get the twists on the side, I found that it was important to keep tightly twisting the ponytail the whole time I was tucking it in. Good luck!
Thank you for this article, pretty helpful information.
This style is perfect for a fairy tale wedding and is ideally suited for traditional formal weddings like New Zealand Weddings. Thanks for posting it here. :)
I love this blog post. The instructions are so clear so will allow any bride with long hair to experiment with this style. It would also look great with a hairvine or fresh flowers instead of a comb.
oh my goodness! This is SO beaUtiful.... thanks SO much for sharing this tutorial. Incredibly well done - thank you for sharing.
I love the Gibson rol! it looks so adorable!
