A braided crown
I'm excited to share another hair tutorial! Heidi braids, which go across the top of your head, are beautiful, but my friend Caroline wears hers in a different way: like a crown circling around her head. What a breezy summer style! She looks like a Danish princess. So I invited her over to explain how to do them, and the wonderful Jamie Beck took photographs.
Here are Caroline's steps, if you'd like to try it out...

1. First, part your hair into two sections. To make the look softer, I like to make a diagonal part in the front (starting sort of near the arch of my left eyebrow, going towards the middle of the crown) and then bring the part straight down the back.
2. Braid the two ponytails, and secure each with a small rubber band.
3. Make sure the tops of the braids are pretty loose (you don't want that part pulled too tight or you'll be able to see the part line going down the back).
4. Take the braid on the right and wrap it around the front. Wrap it low and loose near your front hairline (versus on the top of your head).
5. Pin the braid in place with bobby pins. I like to use mini ones, but if you have thick or unruly hair, bigger pins will work better.
6. Take the second braid and wrap it around the back. Again, I like to keep it low and loose so it sort of flows into the front braid.
7. Pin in place. If your hair is long enough, tuck the end of each braids behind the other braid (right where they meet) and pin to hold. Voila!
What do you think, my darlings? These pretty braids are perfect for summer bike rides and taking photos around town. (Your hair stays out of your face, but you still look adorable.) Thank you so much, Caroline and Jamie. xoxo
P.S. Three past hair tutorials, including the perfect ponytail!
(Photos by the fabulous Jamie Beck for Cup of Jo. Caroline's jewelry is from her own line Brvtvs. She also used this hairspray to make her hair shiny.)

her sweater is from urban outfitters: http://bit.ly/kfyBlJ
I love it!!! I am totally going to copy that style! :)
Thank you for another braid tutorial! I have really long hair and the twisted bun and first heidi braid tutorial (by orchid gray I believe) have been lifesavers. I wear one or the other nearly every day. Can't wait to try this one out!

Love this!! Great share. I'm trying it out this weekend!
These are always my favorite posts! Love it!
love the .gif!
Martha- I always feel like my hair is never shiny and always looks filthy! It's probably from the hairspray I used- L'oreal Elnett...when you brush it out, it leaves a really nice shine and no white flakes like other hairspray does!! xo!
I love this hair style and will try it out any time soon.

i will definitely try this soon, i think it would look so dreamy with all the bright maxi dresses i've bought for summer...
So pretty! Just wish my unruly curly hair would cooperate for these operations... Might have to experiment on my sister's hair :)
sigh. gorgeous, as always.
i looove how harry potter your gifs are (though the mini buns gif was the most HPish!).
I love your hair tutorials and can't wait to try this one out!

Aww, now I wish my hair was long enough to try this! Right now it barely hits my shoulders. Good thing I grow it out to donate every couple of years... I'll have to try this when it gets longer! :-)

So cute, I hope that mine willturn out that pretty!
Wow, that girl has got such beautiful long and rich hair!

You are seriously the cutest person I have ever seen in my life. I hope when I'm a mom I'm as cute as you. And I hope I have half the creativity you do. (I don't even need to be a mom. Just as me!) Thanks for always having such awesome posts.

very pretty!
love her blouse, is it vintage?
I love her hair, but also....that last picture is absolutely fantastic.
Can you post the next ones with the instructions with their corresponding photos? It is a bit tough to scroll from instructions to photos and back with hair in one hand, trying to figure out the next step. Love these tutorials, so this is my only complaint!
I love, love these braid posts. Thank you so much. I wear the "crown" braid hairstyle you showcased a while back all the time. I have a lot of hair, curly at that, and I NEED these types of hairstyles. Please, don't stop :))
this is awesome!!!
SO pretty!
anonymous, good idea, i will try!!
Oh thank you, I love your hair tutorials. Having finally learned how to do the perfect bun from an earlier one, I'm excited to try this. Will post outcome on my blog if I manage to do it right! xxx
Very pretty!
I always wear a side braid and I'm excited to try this. I love that the directions are so clear!

Laurenlovestoshare
Love! She is so beautiful!
Jo, we need one of your beautiful hair tutorials for us short, curly-haired girls!
i love this! i will definitely be trying this asap! thank you
She is stunning! I love these braids and I wish my hair was long/thick enough to do this. Her ombre hair looks perfect with these braids.
I love it and can't wait until mine is long enough to reach across the front of my head (until then, I'll continue to over-use your 3 buns...)
So, is the lighter shade at the ends of Caroline's hair intentionally only at the ends, or is it simply a great grow-out of highlights/coloring?
The real question: Would it be weird if I asked for my stylist to color just the bottom few inches to look like that?
xo Miranda
i love love love these tutorials with your friend. she needs to model for anthropologie asap.
I'm obsessed with this post! Caroline is so beautiful, the window + camera, the minty springy green background, the sweet hair... so lovely. As always, thank y'all for allowing me to capture these stories with y'all, such a pleasure.
i always love this hairstyle but never feel brave enough to do it. i just might have to for it though, one of these days. :)
http://ericplustanya.blogspot.com
The hair photos are very nice, but that last, moving photo is not a success - too creepy. I like the idea/concept, but I just don't think this one works for me.
definitely trying this!
I wish I could pull it off!! =)
Melanie's Randomness
Well where on earth have I been? My gosh I just love this! Might just might be able to convince my 19 year old back into braids! I did a mommy blogger post last night on hair. I was sending one of those famous subliminal messages to her! She got it, but it would be way more cool coming from you!
Kiss that sweet baby boy. He is so precious Joanna. Wishing you a wonderful Mother's Day weekend too!
Xo Lisa
I can't wait to try this, I've been wearing my hair in the braided top bun HEAPS since seeing it here. Keep these posts coming, simple and stylish!
Absolutely love this - I'm going to try it first thing tomorrow. Probably the easiest tutorial I've seen on this technique.
this is beautiful. i have always loved braids and have missed them so much since cutting my hair. it just wont grow back fast enough and i am seeing braids on everyone and i am getting jealous.
beautiful
absolutely lovely!!

blurgh i can't do ittt. i keep getting a huge lump. not sure how you flip the braid around or what
Miranda- the color was done on purpose, but it's over a year old so it was way grown out. When I had it done originally, it was a gradual fade starting from around my ears, fading to blonde at the ends. But it was never all blonde...if you google image search "ombre hair", that will give you good references to take to your stylist.
And to for the person above who keeps getting lumps near your braid- you can use a bobby pin to keep the lump down (I sometimes have to do that), or make a tighter braid at the base, and loosen it as you go along.
i'm dying to try that hairstyle but with my curly hair its a problem, lovely pics!
Oooh, this is lovely! I wear my hair in braids a lot, so it's nice to see some variation! I just have really really thick hair (the kind where you have to use a million bobbypins), so let's see if it works.
Also, Joanna, where did you get your globe?
Thank you!

Doesn't work with waist-length hair. :(
A friend sent this to me, and as a result, I am wearing this right now. I feel like a million bucks. Thank you so much for sharing!
Do you know how or what program was used to create the animated gif at the end? I love seeing these lately, anthropologie had some in their spring ads this year too.
Beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing - I can't wait to try it out!
This would be awesome for summer. And quite easy too.
Nice style!
