Do or don't: Boyfriend pants

Emily recently wore these adorable Gap khakis--which she found in the men's section! They're so relaxed and baggy, but I love how she rolled them up and wore heels.

What do you think? Would you wear men's pants? (Here's the women's version.)

hmm, DO if you're at least 5'7. so that means DONT for me. :-)

I wear men's pants all the time. In fact my best denim cut-offs used to belong to my hubby. Check it here

Yes!!!! I love them!! I love her blog too!!

I've bought mens trousers from GAP before now, I wanted some straight cut black cords and the womens were the same but SO low-cut and I don't feel comfortable like that. I like choosing different leg lengths in the mens too! I could never find the right pair of trousers (lived in skirts) until I started shopping in the mens section - normally I dress quite girly but I like trousers to be real trousers.

I love everything about it but the saggy crotch. Let's face it, men and women just have different needs in pants!

Kaylyn said...

With her body, a MAJOR do! i'm only 5'3"...i think i'd look silly, but she looks fantastic!

Catherine Dabels said...

I like them but they seem a bit baggy in the nether region. No?

Alejandra said...

Actual men's pants don't work with my female curves. I have a small waist and full hips/butt so I need to use pants that are actually cut for women, otherwise they look bad and gape or are too tight in all the wrong places. I think you'd have to have a very straight figure for that to work. They look kind of cute on Emily, but there is still some pouching going on in the crotch area that I think would probably be unflattering while walking. I do like the proportions; I'd just use actual women's pants.

Paige (Two Runners And A Brown Dog) said...

Half of my pants fit like this, because I was about two sizes larger when I bought them. Now they kind of hang and sag, and I hate that! So...basically...I would not buy this type of pant.

The crotch on men's pants is the problem.

She looks fab! I on the other hand am too short and chubby to pull this look off. But it is a great look!

Deanna (Silly Goose Farm) said...

The only time I've worn men's pants (and probably ever will) is pre-baby, when someone would show up at the door and I was still in my jim-jams or undies and they were the only thing available.

HuntGatherFashion said...

I went in to the men's section at gap to look at khaki's last fall, and I thought I finally found the perfect "boyfriend" pair, but flinched because of one fatal flaw, the crotch. As mentioned by a few other readers, the extra room in the lady bits region is not so flattering.

Michelle said...

I normally love Emily's outfits but these pants just don't look like they fit her. They're not doing her little frame any justice. Roll up the women's version and at least it'll look like they fit.

My hubs and I are nearly the same height. I wear his button-down shirts belted over leggings and skinny jeans all the time. And he NEVER notices that I'm wearing his clothes until I tell him. Such. A. Guy. ;)

DO wear boyfriend pants: androgyny can be very chic, just look at Coco Chanel. DON'T wear your boyfriend's actual pants, these will never ever fit or look good!
Love the outfit :)

Cait said...

Definite DO.

noendtodesign said...

Not everybody can pull it off, but if the figure is slim, I think it's gorgeous. I love it!

Mocha Mornings said...

Total DO if you've got long legs. I'm 5'1, so I don't know if I could pull this off. Damn the maxi dress/maxi skirt & the boyfriend pants! ;)

Torrie said...

That's all I used to wear! Especially during the 90's/early 00's when we had the awful high waisted trend (i.e. Bongo)!

I didn't make the switch back to women's until I discovered Abercrombie (their style fit better than my favorite pair of guy jeans! Or just as good anyway :).

diana said...

No. All men pants have room for extra equipement that girls just don't need; and named room is sagging and...no.

Atelier e-Couture said...

I like the look. It is fresh, but I would have not never looked for a pair of jeans in the men's section. Maybe that is why I have not found one that I like ;)

Mara said...

It's a definite do. Shopping the Old Navy Boys department is one of my secrets -- super cute and affordable! (men's clothes are often much less expensive than women's)

Anonymous said...

I think the women's pants fit better, but sometimes you just want a relaxed roomy feel. The women's cut is for fit (for men looking at us), not comfort.

Ginny Cook said...

Do do! Even with shorter legs and a long torso, I am *trying* to rock this. (Granted, I am also trying to disguise my new mama tummy and thighs so the bagginess is perfect and er, comfy!)

But, I agree with Mocha Mornings, no way on the maxi dress/skirt trend! Well, maybe if you're 6 feet tall?!

I think that if you have hips that don't like like Shakira, J.Lo, or myself, it probably wouldn't work, {I don't know the last time I saw am man with hips :)} But if you are cute and slender, like Emily...wear away!!

Hogger + Co. said...

If they fit me like THAT, yes...but I don't think men's pants would fit me that way...maybe the boy's section!

Marianne said...

The crotch on those pants gives me a headache. I love everything else.

Nomadic D. said...

I'm with most everyone else here, the crotch here is an issue. I do love boyfriend pants/jeans, but all mine are women's pants cut really loose, and they just hang better.

http://nomadic-d.blogspot.com/

Emma-Jane said...

too much crotch! :) there are too many nice girl versions of these pants, why go to the men's section?

Nicole said...

Sure, but only if I never sat down. I can't even imagine where all that fabric in the crotch is going to go when I sit. YIKES!

Joanna Goddard said...

haha, i hear the point about the crotch, although that's kind of what i love about the look! :) relaxed, low key, slouchy... :)

Bethany said...

I like them a lot especially paired with the heels, but I think I'd go with the women's version to avoid the bagginess in the crotch region...

Ryan said...

I'm sure most females will think this is super comfortable because your pants are typically so tight.

On the other hand, there's something nice about a female in a more fitted style of pant (not read: skinny fit).

If it's for you, have fun with it.

i'm not digging the saggy crotch either. it kind of commands your attention away from the other details of her outfit like her cute heels. they are probably really comfy though!

Sarah said...

I'm not loving the saggy crotch and I don't think it would really work for someone with hips and ample rear. Ahem, me.

Veuve said...

Yes. I found a pair of great Banana Republic men's pants. The pockets are huge and the fit is really comfortable and good, not overly masculine. The material is a little stretchy so there's not a whole lot of extra room in the crotch, but yes, the slightly slouchy look is good. I roll them up and wear them with a fitted cardigan or tee. I'd say my figure is on the boyish side, though, so I can't speak for other body types.

ziazia said...

Love this look!

Anonymous said...

I like her look but i've tried to wear men trousers (they are longer, and I was too tight on $ as a student to buy long jeans at the Gap...)
Problem is that the zipper is too long. Standing up as she does it's fine but when you sit, as there is no "package" there it just curls around and it does not look nice... really not nice...

Cathy Canaceli said...

I love how it looks on the waist and legs, but not on the crotch. That wouldn't work on wide hips...

And I guess, I wouldn't feel very lady like so I will skip this and pick the lady version, which is still a little baggy but perfectly feminine.

otherwise, i say yes to boyfriend pants, if you can find some without baggy crotches :) as someone mentions above, it kinda works standing (on emily, at least), but the minute you sit down it's just a hot mess.

Looks good but aren't 'boyfriend' style jeans in now? I wonder what differentiates men's pants from women's when you can find loads of boyfriend cut pants that still tailor to a woman's body. Hmph - anywho, just a thought!

Vanessa said...

While I love the look above, I think it's a lot more flattering on more body types to do the men's look with actual women's pieces. That being said, if it works, go for it!

Laura said...

I like the idea, but in reality, as everyone has said, they are so uncomfortable! I'm also only 5'4" and do have hips, so it's frustrating if that is your body type. I love the look of a tucked in shirt to nice flat front trousers though. Just wish I could pull it off! And yes, the crotch is the reason they're so uncomfortable!

aaez said...

i would but the crotches are always too long. but i like the idea of boyfriend slouchy jeans!

Caton said...

id need to see how the back of these look. Men's pants can be very unflattering there

Sarah said...

I love Emily's blog and most of her OOTD's, but no this one. Ditto on the nether regions. The crotch is way too baggy.

Ash said...

after seeing this, DUH! of COURSE I owuld wear them... I recently purchased boyfriend shorts, and was a little sad when my hubby could fit into them :( Nevertheless, I love the style- casual, relaxed, effortless...whoever decided tight skinny pants was in should be shot! :)

I would if I wore trousers. I've sworn off them completely cos they make me look so odd. But I do love the boyfriend jeans / pants look.

Sara Szatmary said...

Only doable if you have a slim frame and the pants are cut well. I have wide hips, so I don't think men's pants would flatter very well...

You know I've been thinking about this lately, because it has always annoyed me that women's trousers don't come in waist/length sizes like men's do. I think Emily just gave me the guts to go for it and take a peek at the men's department, she looks fabulous in hers!! Definite do!

Major Gal said...

boyfriend jeans are tricky to pull off. i'm working a pair about a size too big from Joe Fresh (big Canadian clothier) and i roll the cuffs up and roll the waist down. This eliminates the saggy crotch part. I also try to wear longer shirts with the jeans.

krissy said...

A total DON'T. Even with her model-y body and great style, that saggy crotch is very unfortunate. Imagine how the rest of us would look?

I don't get why she did that. They do make khakis for women. Same look, better fit.

Katelyn said...

Absolute do.
I do it all the time.

BARGAIN BEX said...

if i knew that rockin' a pair would mean i would look as positively adorable in them as miss emily does, then yes ... a total and complete do. :)

Miss Mary Edith said...

I hope this doesn't sound too mean, but they just look really diaper-y in the crotch area. I don't think that is flattering at all. She is beautiful and has a great body, but I think the pants look pretty unflattering. Better to get the "boyfriend" style that is actually made for women and proportioned correctly!

anamanzana said...

i do. i already buy 'boyfriend' cut jeans, so it only makes sense to buy the men's pants. it's not because of height (5'8" which isn't THAT tall). it's because my thighs are thunderous, not little sticks, and i have no waist....actually, i am built more like a guy (sigh).

Nancy said...

SUPER DO! she looks so chic in those pants. I'm scared I can't pull them off though. I have large calves so boyfriend pants/jeans end up looking bulky on my legs.

Ğąřãƥâņ said...

A man's perspective... Oh-my-gumbo **drops dead**

Camille said...

Do! I am quite curvy when it comes to hip/waist proportions, and most of the time, men's pants fit better than women's, even in the crotch area. Men's pants often hit higher at the waist, and are easier to take in if needed. And I'm about 5'5", and they don't make me look bulky or short! You just have to find the right ones!

mixed martial arts los angeles said...

I do not have the body type to pull off such a look without looking like a frump, but they definitely work on her. I think it's a look for the taller, more slender builds as opposed to the athletic, thicker legged girls like me.

I think that when a woman dresses to kill it's typically to kill a guy. She's HOTT in those khaki baggies with too much crotch. I won't say that every woman would agree, certainly not for themselves if they don't like that look, but for a guy, there's something VERY sexy about this look. Plus girl-boys are extra hot anyway, lol! (shhh)

Funny, I was actually thinking men's pants would work for my body type, which, as you both know, is curvy with a side of curves. But according to these commenters, it sounds like I'm way off?! Em looks awesome though. You should def do this, too. I could so see you rocking this look with some red lips!

Juliet said...

I think Emily looks super cute in her pants-from-the-men's-section...I just don't think I could pull off this look. She could probably pull off just about anything, though. So, do for her, but maybe a don't for lots of other people.

Saggin Bilbo Baggins said...

Men's pants are not tailored for a woman's body, hence the baggy crotch part in the front (excuse my language I couldn't think of anything technical).

I'd rather wear womens pants with a menswear feel, that way I'll know they'll fit correctly but I can still achieve. I mean, we have parts that mens clothing can't accommodate properly unless the pieces aren't fitted.

Angela Osborn said...

I think she wears them well and they look quite chic (despite being a bit long in the crotch). But I really wouldn't really describe them as baggy. They don't really look like men's pants at all. I've seen women's pants look more baggy, relaxed and masculine than this. So is it okay to wear men's pants? Depends on the style of the men's pants in question and it depends on the woman's body shape. I personally would rather wear a man-style pant designed for a woman's body so the fit is more appropriate for my figure. Sorry for the rant! :)

DENiSE said...

No...not even if your Emily. Sorry-they look like she's wearing mens pants that don't fit.

Sini said...

For me even the womens pants are too baggy from the tights, so i guess mens pants even more - so I would say no for this look. And I think it looks too baggy in this photo too.. sorry! everyone luckily has their own taste and can wear anything they like :)

Anonymous said...

a YES if they look right. Unfortunately these look too big in the crotch - sorry! they do. And i loooove Emily and her style. Love! But sometimes things that *feel* great don't look great. It doesn't mean you shouldn't wear those things.... It's just real life!

Caddy said...

I like the look of short/cropped/baggy pants with heels. The shoes dress the outfit up and but the pants keep it casual. I think it's a good balance.

Anonymous said...

They are too loose in the crotch...looks funny!

Sara B said...

I loved this look on her but I've got to agree with some of the other commenters, the crotch does look a little funny. Which is why when they made boyfriend jeans/pants for women it was perfect! Loose in all the right areas and tight where we need it to be :) Emily could do no wrong in my book though so I still give her a major thumbs up.
