So excited for The Royal Wedding tomorrow!!! Are you going to wake up early and watch it? Kate must have serious butterflies.Fun fact: Did you know that Royals tend not to use last names? I suddenly realized this morning that I had *no* idea what Prince William's last name was. (Apparently it's Mountbatten-Windsor.)
P.S. I can't wait to see all the wedding hats and fascinators.

i'm so excited too! and i'm (almost) in the same time zone so i can watch it live!
ReplyDeletewhy can't we wear fascinators to weddings in the us? they are so fun!
a couple of our friends wore fascinators to our wedding, and they looked AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about what her last name would be today as well-- I felt like I should know what their last name was and couldnt think of it!
ReplyDeleteI am SO excited for the wedding, but sadly do not have cable-- so I wont be watching it :( I am sure I can catch stuff online after the fact!
Did you know the Mountbattens changed their name from Battenburg around WWI? Apparently it had to do with anti-German sentiment: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_Hauke#Name_change_to_.22Mountbatten.22
ReplyDeletein this photo, prince william's face really does have those "king features". whoa.
ReplyDeletewow, that's fascinating, rachael!!
ReplyDeletesarah -- i think she'll be called princess catherine of wales.
ReplyDeleteI am so excited too!
ReplyDeleteOooh! Anyone have any suggestions for what the best channel will be? I'm getting up to watch live but am also recording it for my viewing party so friends can watch later in the morning. I need to make some flapjacks!
ReplyDeleteHahah..Balazs and I were thinking about that too last night and we didn't have a clue about the last name. So this morning I called my mom in London to ask about it all as I know she is over the moon with the wedding:) She even got the special wedding china set:) I cant wait to watch it tomorrow:) Kisses
ReplyDeleteI live in London, so it's a little bit easier for me to catch the wedding! Would have loved to wait along the procession route, but I'm not hardcore enough to sleep there overnight. Instead I'm avoiding all the crowds and catching a small screening by the docks and then a street party in shoreditch! Shame that it's forecast to rain tomorrow though - the only day of rain in ages!
ReplyDeleteMy roommates and I googled Prince William's last name the other night when we watched the Lifetime movie. It's so funny none of us had a clue and it never occurred to us either!
ReplyDeleteActually his surname (and hers tomorrow) is Wales. It won't be Mountbatten-Windsor until he is King. At the moment it is Wales as that is where his fathers nobility cones from (i.e. the Prine of Wales).
ReplyDeleteIt was a big source of concern for the British newspaper when he graduated.

Beyond excited:
ReplyDeletea) I love Love
b) I love Pomp and Circumstance
c) I love large, intricate ceremonies that involve the passing down of a royal lineage.
My office thinks I've officially lost it.
PS. She'll be Princess Catherine - could that be any more perfect?!
Becca
I couldn't be more excited to share in the fun celebrations and watch parties!
ReplyDeleteI'm in Kansas City, where Princess Diana's dress in on exhibit. I plan to attend thousands of other excited crazies to watch the wedding on a jumbo screen and tour the exhibit... at 3 a.m. :)
Also hosting my own Royal Wedding celebration at my "flat" tomorrow evening. I just posted all the cute DIY sites that gave me decor inspiration - too fun!
Enjoy!
Hey Joanna!
ReplyDeleteNicolette here from PHOTOgraphy Getaways! Advertised with you in September. I'm in London!! Check out my pics from Today Show with Vivien Sheriff hat designer. Cheers!
So excited too!! Cannot wait to see Kate's dress...I'm anticipating gorgeousness!! It is so going to be worth waking up at 3am for:)
ReplyDeleteIt's not Friday yet so I *still* have a chance! Just kidding, waking up in the morning is hard enough for me, so no thanks to ruling a country.
ReplyDeleteHere's the link love!
ReplyDeletehttp://simplycolette.blogspot.com/2011/04/today-show-with-vivien-sheriff.html
oh, aj, that's SO interesting!! i guess he used "wales" when he was in the army, so that makes sense! the royals make things very confusing :)
ReplyDeletehaha, becca, you are hilarious!!!
ReplyDeleteI would be excited - but when I found out that the wedding costs $20 million pounds I was actually a bit disgusted. Just call me a wet blanket!
ReplyDeleteCatherine actually won't a be a princess until Charles becomes king and William become Prince of Wales.
ReplyDeleteOh, I never really noticed that they don't use last names... Mountbatten-Windsor? Interesting...
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I love all the pictures you have on your blog! They're so dreamy and beautiful.
Um... I'm pretty sure his first name is Prince and last name is William. Just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteHahaha! I'm with Lia! ;)
ReplyDeleteEEP! I took the day off work specifically to watch :) I plan on making scones and tea for the occassion - very excited!
ReplyDeletei couldn't be more excited!! i don't think i'll stay up to watch it because with a two-month-old i need all the sleep i can get but i will definitely DVR it and watch it first thing in the morning...can't wait!
ReplyDeleteroyal wedding nerds unite!
ReplyDeletei'm so super-excited, and just ran out during my lunch hour to Myers of Keswick in the West Village to buy golden syrup and McVities biscuits to make Chocolate McVities Biscuit Cake tonight - the groom's cake and Wills's favorite.
fingers crossed for Temperley of London to be the designer of The Dress...
I am actually really looking forward to it. I love those royal weddings!
ReplyDeleteI can still remember the wedding of our prince and princess (The Netherlands) which was beyond beautiful. I actually cried as well when I saw Maxima bursting into tears when she heard a song in church.
Because of political aspects her father couldn't come to her wedding and the song was called Adios Nonino. It already was emotional for her (I guess since her father couldn't be there) but this music, with the choir, a song she had chosen for her father (is how the story goes), the happiness of getting married, you can see it all on her face at that moment. It was wonderful!!!
I hope I can see something of the royal wedding of Kate and William! Unfortunately it will be very hard: I have to work...!
Here is the link of the video to show you what I mean. The beautiful moment starts at 2 minutes.

Have fun watching the Royal Wedding all you girls! :)
Love,
Nancy
I've been totally po-faced about the whole thing until today, when I started to think, actually it's kind of nice that there are Union Jack flags fluttering everywhere, everyone gets a day off and celebrates the same thing on the same day. Someone said to me today that it's the first positive/happy national event there's been for our generation - true! Oh the surname thing - they're all made up anyway! Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg was the Duke of Edinburgh's surname, but he changed it to Mountbatten before he married the Queen as his uncle - Mountbatten had helped him er, pull the Queen. And the Royal family's surname was Saxe-Coburg but they changed it to Windsor as Hitler rose to power so they sounded less German. Then Prince Phillip was unhappy that his children wouldn't bear his surname, so it was agreed that further descendents would be called "Mountbatten-Windsor".
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm having a wedding brunch tomorrow in front of the TV!
oh my gosh! just because of you pointing it out now i realized i didn't know his last name either!
ReplyDeletecan't wait to see her dress!
ReplyDeleteI'm totally going to watch at least some part of the wedding! I'm considering skipping class too.. :D i'm so exited to see what kate's dress looks like, some rumors say she has designed it by herself!
ReplyDeleteIs that their official engagement portrait? It makes me CRAZY that his head is cut off!
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm getting up to watch it. I really don't care that much, but I love doing things that a lot of other people are doing, too. It makes me feel cozy and connected to the world. Is that lame?
Setting the alarm for 1AM and camping out on the couch to watch ALL of it. I can't wait. I took the day off from work so I can go to bed after;-)
ReplyDeleteno, amber, that is really, really sweet.
ReplyDeletemargaux, genius!! after reading your comment, i'm going to head there this afternoon!!
ReplyDeleteI've been hiding my obsession with this. haha. I am recording it so I can watch it with my boyfriend tomorrow nite. We've both become fascinated with the monarchy since we travelled to the UK.
ReplyDeleteWe are actually having a royal wedding viewing party tomorrow morning. We are having wedding cake and mimosas!
ReplyDeleteI'm totally waking up ... with my tiara, scones, tea & champagne cocktails. I'm so excited! Interesting about their last name. I thought it was Wales. Lots of interesting discussion here about that!
ReplyDeleteyes yes yes YES :))))))
ReplyDeletewow--I just blogged about this too! I am super excited and planning on getting up early AND DVR'ing it;)
ReplyDeleteWe looked up his last name too! We've been only slightly addicted to the royal specials going on everywhere :)
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I'm totally waking up early to watch :)
Oh how funny! I was wondering this morning what his last name was, too, but I couldn't find it! That last name is a mouthful... I'd probably go by just William, too! ;)
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, Kate must have maaaaajor butterflies right now!
I am excited to see what wedding dress the soon-to-be Princess Catherine has chosen and what others will be wearing to the event. With all the awful things in the news recently it's nice to have something positive to read and look forward to(P.S. I have also posted links to free printables and menu ideas here)
ReplyDeletetotally got up at 3am to watch Diana & Charles. totally making my two little sons get up with me to watch Kate & William tomorrow! woot! i can not wait to see her dress!
ReplyDeleteOhmygaaah!! I'm so so SO excited! Of course I'm unable to get up that early so I must rec'd it and watch it after work... but even where I work we are celebrating, with a display for them and it's written on our schedule :) haha. I think it's going to be lovely.
ReplyDelete-Lauren
Haha funny story: a few years ago my little brother told me he wanted to be as rich as the Williams. I asked who he meant and he said, "you know, Prince Williams!"
ReplyDeletehahaha
i just realized i don't know it either! crazy.
ReplyDeletesuch a gorgeous photo! how exciting!
ReplyDeletethere is a bar nearby doing a 4am Tiaras and Pajamas party. seriously thinking about doing it.
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of embarassed to admit that I am also excited. I wish I were going to a party! So I could wear an awesome hat. I did make a post about Royal Wedding party attire though: http://ifzombiesweresupermodels.blogspot.com/2011/04/royal-wedding-party-hats.html
ReplyDeleteyes! i must admit i've been geeking out a bit over this whole wedding shebang. i've even taken it up a notch by turning it into a bit of a game by going to this british website, "paddy power" (it's a betting site) and looking at all of the crazy bets they've developed for tons of different aspects of the wedding. i'm not making any money bets or anything--just doing it for personal pride/bragging rights. my favorite categories are: who will design kate's dress; which tiara will she wear from the queen's collection; and there's even a bet on what color victoria beckham's dress will be (ha)! i've especially had fun looking up all of the different possible tiaras and reading about their history (again, with the geeking out). can't wait to see if any of my guesses are right! :)
ReplyDeletei'm excited too! :) i had no idea about the royals' last name, how funny!
ReplyDeleteI only know their last name because my sister was in love with Prince William and tried to make us call her Mrs Mountbatten-Windsor. Tried, and failed :) Hehe!
ReplyDeleteI've set my DVR to record the wedding so I can watch it at a less obscene hour.
I am excited for the wedding, too!
ReplyDeleteI feel like it's one of the only really happy moments in history we will remember. Everyone remembers where they were when really terrible things happen (like my grandmother remembers that she was ironing when JFK was killed), but how exciting that we will all remember what we were doing on that Friday when the royal wedding occurred :)
Can't wait!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I can watch it live (only 1hour time difference)...
I really want to see her dress and tiara!
:D
http://sweetharvestmoon.blogspot.comcu
Joanna, I actually did know that they didn't have last names - just because I wrote a letter to Buckingham palace when I was a little girl after Princess Diana died. Addressing it was a doozy!
ReplyDeleteI am beyond excited for this wedding. I will be getting up early. Cannot wait to see her dress and which tiara she is going to wear. Rumor has it that the Queen will let her wear the one she wore to her wedding. We shall see. I wish them every happiness in the world.
ReplyDeleteSuper excited, because I'm actually going to be there! Luckily for me, being English, I will be there at 11am, not 6am. Also, everyone in Britan has a day off work, so have fun!
ReplyDeleteThat is interesting about the last names. I love this picture of them!
ReplyDeletehttp://thedailytiara.com
Thrilled!!! Not taking off work (unfortunately), but I will be having a little watching party tomorrow night!
ReplyDeleteHe was my first (celebrity) crush. Hehe. Congrats to William & Kate. xo.
ReplyDeleteI am waking up early, hopping in a cab to a friend's apartment, and watching there. We are baking scones and sipping champagne — and then going to work! :) But my mom has talked about Diana's wedding for as far back as I can remember. She woke up early to watch in 1981 and says it was one of the most amazing moments to see. Based on that, there's no way I'm missing this! :)
ReplyDeleteIt is exciting, isn't it? I think I'll put on pretty pajamas tonight, so I feel a bit more dressed when I wake up to watch. And mimosas sound like a brilliant idea!
ReplyDeletei can't wait for all the over the top clothes, hats and accessories!
ReplyDeleteOh my goooooossssssh! I'm so excited, but I have school, so i have to record it. ):
ReplyDeleteI will be waking up early to watch it, even though I have work at 9 am, totally worth it. My coworkers and I are having a princess party with tiarras and scones and tea!
ReplyDeletewww.melstevens1.blogspot.com
My sister used to live in the same dorm as Will when she studied abroad at St. Andrews, and they took a dorm picture. I was curious as to this very question, so I looked at how he was listed on the picture, and it was "Will Wales." I thought that was hilarious.
ReplyDeleteSuper excited lady over here. Can't wait or the dress. I'm english and I didn't even know that was their surname, how bad is that? ha.

Just the other day I asked my husband what the royal family's last name was! He said, "Do they even have a last name?"
ReplyDeleteI've been a royalty fanatic for far too long. I thought about skipping it but I want to see all the foreign royals so much! At my royalty-related blog I've dedicated the week to the Royal Wedding and my distaste finally turned to excitement after seeing everyone arrive at the party for foreign guests.
ReplyDeleteIf you like hats you should check out madhattery.royalroundup.com
Haha, Joanna I googled the exact same thing earlier this week! :)
ReplyDeleteI am sooooo excited. I hardly know which channel to watch. The coverage will be overwhelming and I'll be loving every minute of it.
ReplyDeleteI have to ask what happened to the photos of the last wedding you posted. I noticed they were not in the link you provided and today they are not on your site either. So haunting. . . I can't stop thinking about them. Thanks for the great blog.
ReplyDeleteYes! I want to watch it but there's a big time difference, 5 hours I think so I hope I catch it!

Unfortuantely waking up means being up at 3 am. :( I can't wait to see a rerun of it though!
ReplyDeleteHehe yes, I had to google his full name for my Prince William impersonation that I did on my blog today! I thought it was "Wales" as he went by William Wales when he was in the military. I guess Mountbatten-Windsor was too long to stitch on the uniform ^^
ReplyDeleteRelatable Style
I'm actually just about to go start making scones. I'm waking up at 2 am here... and going to watch in bed... with STRONG coffee. Tea won't do it at that time :)
ReplyDeletecan't wait to see her dress!!!
Jo-So funny, I did the exact same thing! His name is the longest name I think I've ever seen if you include all the middles!!
ReplyDeletewatching it for sure! I have my DVR set to record from 3am-7pm tomorrow since I have to work till 10pm
ReplyDeleteI actually funny enough...am quite excited for the royal wedding! It's such a big deal for my generation and I love that. I cannot wait to see how perfectly elegant the wedding looks! Kate is so beautiful. I can't imagine how hectic it must be getting the preparations together the day before!
ReplyDeletexoxoxo
I am SO excited! It's on at 3 a.m. here :)
ReplyDeleteYes indeed! I'll be kissing my husband goodbye as it comes on (around 5am) at our house!
ReplyDeletexo Shannon
I can't wait!!! xo-kelly

ReplyDeletedenim jeans
hi Joanna, what are fascinators? Sad i know but i am a bit of a Royalist (must be the English in me, and i looked up the surname years ago, i think Mountbatton (he was Prince Philips uncle) is the real name but they go by the name of windsor. Cant wait to see her dress! i am finding my plastic tiara as we speak xxxx Angela oohlaalatte.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteFunny, I just thought about the same thing (his last name) when I saw on TV last night "Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding ceremony...". I sure had no idea either. Thanks for the info :-)
ReplyDeleteNow the day has come only few hours there for royal wedding so people around the world will watch the wedding T.V. media will also awaiting to live royal wedding all over the world so all wish them to live lifelong together with one or two children.
ReplyDeleteHe actually goes by the surname Wales as well, on all his uniform it has 'WALES' as in Prince William of Wales - William Wales. How dumb is that?! The Queen is announcing on the wedding day their official titles they will hold, prince and princess of ----?
ReplyDeleteANNOUNCED: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
ReplyDeleteI was watching tv with my father about a week ago when he finally went, She's Kate Middleton and he's Prince William. What's his last name?? We were about to google it when my mother came in and said, Aren't they the house of Windsor? So that would be their last name? As someone who likes Shakespeare, I feel I should have known! But it's funny the things like that we just don't realize we don't know!
ReplyDeleteI am sitting snug on our sofa with my mom and sister (who came to London), and we are watching the BBC! Fun! I wasn't into it before now... but somehow now I'm nervous and excited!
ReplyDeleteHa wow, I had no idea Royals didn't use last names. Interesting! Guess I never thought about it.
ReplyDeletethat's so funny...i was thinking this morning during the wedding that i had no idea what any of their last names are except kate's :) i thought her dress was amazing, but the rest of the wedding was kinda snoozy (or maybe just too formal for me) :)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! I literally just looked up his last name right before getting my daily cup of jo! I still have the question in my question box at the top of your page. =)
ReplyDeletei never even thought about the last name, ha!
ReplyDeletei just watched a clip, kate really looks stunning.
when i searched wikipedia for his last name i realised i didn't know it either. i thought it was windsor but i heard that's the commonwealth group name or something.
ReplyDeleteI totally realized last night that I didn't know his last name, so I was googling when my husband walked in and totally knew it! Who would have thought?
ReplyDeleteI was wondering the exact same thing while watching the ceremony this morning! The wedding was magical and Kate's dress was absolutely stunning. She looked like Grace Kelly.
ReplyDeleteI was totally thinking the same thing about his last name! I was trying to think what she'd change her name to, and then realized I had no idea what his last name was. I tried going through the list - Charles, Elizabeth - to see if I could remember, and realized I'd never known!
ReplyDeleteI loved all of the pageantry. I must have watched hours and hours today. I even made a little Union Jack skirt and (tried to make)a fascinator for my 6 year old. It was so much fun! What a fairytale. Pictures here:
ReplyDeletehttp://sandrakleist.blogspot.com/2011/04/royal-obsession.html
How funny, i did the exact same thing! i'm optimistic for them:)
ReplyDeleteThe British Royal family surname had been Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, but this was changed during WW1 (in 1917, if I recall correctly) to Windsor, both to avoid the German links and rumoured also to separate the name from the bomber planes targeting London - the Gotha G.IV. Windsor being obviously linked to Windsor Castle.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, as people have said, Wills is referred to as William Wales, now Duke of Cambridge.
(:
When Princess Diana used to bring the boys go-karting to F1 Chelsea in London, I thought it was quite cool that she used to sign her credit card slip simply "Wales"... (before the days of PIN numbers..)
ReplyDeleteImagine being able to sign your credit card slip just with the name of the country of which you happened to be Princess... I guess not too many people get to do that...
Will went on to become our outright lap record holder, the name of whom always appeared on the huge electronic scoreboard as the time to beat.
On his mother's recommendation, his name appeared on the board simply as "William Wales" and it was some time before anyone - least of all the media - realised who William Wales was...
I think that they would have been on to 'William Mountbatten-Windsor' slightly more quickly...!
Thanks for great share :)
