ReplyDeleteI would say thumbs down... It is not very flattering. The word thunder thighs comes to mind, and that model is stick thin! That said, I am not one to take fashion risks :o)

ReplyDeleteHuge thumbs up! They're so easy to wear and as a short gal, I can throw on a pair of heels or wedges under it and immediately feel statuesque. Ok - feel average height.
ReplyDeletethumbs way down. part of what makes the maxi dress work is that it's often one pattern, the whole way...this just looks awkward, like Hammer pants, but without the legs.

joanna i just saw a bunch of maxi skirts in paris recently, so i'm pretty sure that means they're way cool! i personally would need a huge wedge to pull it off, as i am not a model a.k.a giant!

I shrunk one of my maxi dresses and this summer I've been more than happy to wear it as a skirt! I have to be careful to layer whatever shirt I'm wearing carefully, but it's so soft and comfortable.... plus I don't have to shave my legs! Haha!

ReplyDeleteThat being said, I do own a maxi skirt -it's a very light, sort of bell-shaped skirt that is a khaki color with a little bit of embroidered white eyelet stitching along the bottom. I like wearing it with a close-fitting tee or razor-back tank in the summertime. I think it gives the billowy nature of the skirt a little balance.
I actually adore this look. I saw some pictures from the Sartorialist with long pale skirts and I loved it! I've been seeing it everywhere now.

The dresses aren't too bad, but maxi skirts remind me of Hammer pants, too...they look like billowy sweat pants. I think if this outfit wasn't on a tall and slender model, it would easily make the fashion "don't" page.

Two Thumbs Up - maybe not for this particular skirt just because I think the green is too dark for spring/summer. But I love Maxi Dresses/Skirts in general. I'm trying to find a couple of more chiffon-type ones. There were some featured on the Sartorialist a couple weeks ago that were GORGEOUS!

I think it's a pretty look if you can pull it off (read: tall) but I still can't escape the feeling that this is something we will all look back on someday, much like crop tops or prince valliant haircuts, and shake our heads about.

ReplyDeleteI have a great black maxi skirt I found in a shop in Paris. I agree with some of the ladies, you either need to be tall (which I'm not) or wear wedges or tall booties. I also like to throw a loose, slightly cropped shirt on top so it makes my legs look longer...

ReplyDeleteI think it depends on your body shape. A couple years ago, I was under the delusion that maxi dresses looked good on me so I bought a couple. It took a few months for me to realize they just made me look chunky.
ReplyDeletea definite yes. lets you hide the winter weight if you haven't rid of it yet, hehehe. and if you're short (like me) it's always a must to have some sort of heel or a wedge though, it gives you a couple inches AND it's stylish :)

Up, definitely up. =D I'm 5'4" and thought that I would totally look like a kid wearing mom's dress, but I tried on my first maxi dress last year and fell in love with it. I think it also depends on the color and weight of the fabric too.

ReplyDeleteI love them! I have a long torso and a tiny waist (with a thin/muscular bottom) and they, surprisingly, suit my figure. I have to say, the taller you are, the better they look. But I absolutely love them with a slouchy tank and flat bohemian sandals.

ReplyDeleteI'm wearing a Kelly green one right now that I bought at Zara today at lunch time! So floaty and lovely with flat shoes - I feel very elegant in it. My only rule is that my waist has to be defined and with a top tucked in. Oh, but I'll try to avoid escalators when wearing one from now on - you feel like your skirt is going to get sucked into the machinery any second.
ReplyDeleteI will be sporting maxi dresses, and sometimes styling them so they look like skirts, for most of the summer. I just had knee surgery and will be wearing a lovely knee brace all summer. With the long skirts/ dresses I can camouflage my brace and look stylish as well. Win/Win!

Even back in my day, the 60's and 70's when maxi skirts were on the racks in the stores they just weren't a length that I thought was attractive to wear, and they made it difficult to get into and out of a vehicle and always looked wrinkled from either sitting on them or knobby knees making humps in the knee area. Nope, have to say from experience that I give them a thumbs down.

The longer the length of hemlines signals economic prosperity, due obviously to the extra need for fabric. I had never heard of this until I read about it but very interesting with the longer skirt trend this spring.

I'm wearing a maxi skirt today. Black to the floor. Straight cut. Super comfy and looks pretty sweet paired with a light tank & jean jacket! Think the trick is to find one that fits your body shape but I LOVE your reco. Too bad, I too wouldn't look right in it. Gorgeous none the less.

ReplyDeleteI would say thumbs down, even though I love my loose dresses. This does remind me of MC Hammertime. The skirt just swallows up the model. And if you have a problem area at the waist, it's going to accent it.

ReplyDeletei think the same thing! the word maxi makes me shy away in and of itself. also, i've probably seen one person in my LIFE that i thought looked good in a maxi dress. and that's dress, not skirt. i really don't like the way they look on anyone.
I think the look can go either way, it all depends on how you wear it and pair it with other pieces. I am 5'5", so on me I always feel frumpy unless I wear heels with long skirts. The Anthropologie models always make long skirts look so chic!

ReplyDeletethis season i like the very fitted striped dresses from edith miller and others. being very slim or very fit is definitely necessary to pull this off. during one of the previous revivals, i embraced some very special maxi skirts. this was probably 12+ years ago. i still have a burberry one that was gorgeous (when they were an old, stodgy, heritage brand) and a mayle one a few years later. i just can't go there again myself!

i love them but i do find them extremely hard to wear! tuck in or leave out? heals or flats? and the length always feels to awkward -- like it always feels too short! i wish!
ReplyDeleteI dont know. They certainly look good on all these petite and twig-like models and fashionistas.
ReplyDeleteI think you have to have a very small frame to pull it off (or be very flat chested). Any other body type just makes it look like a horror show.
for me? thumbs down. some people can pull them off but i'm just way too short, at 4'10" i just shrink down to about two ft. i want to love the, i do. but we're so wrong together.

I'd say yes and no. I think it totally depends on the type of figure you have. I'm pretty short, so I don't think I could pull it off. It probably would look great on taller women though!

They have a certain novelty that's appealing. I bought one last Fall and enjoy styling it in various ways.

ReplyDeleteLove! As a short girl, the best advice that I have received on pulling off the "maxi" look is to make sure that the length hits at the ankle to prevent a stunted silhouette. I tried it out, and I believe that it works, don't try to talk me out of it!!
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, I've never been a fan of Maxi's. I agree that they are not very flattering. Some people can pull them off, but unfortunately I am not one of them.

ReplyDeleteI just spent the last month traveling around Asia and as an extremely fair girl with brown hair and blue eyes from Canada I got a lot of people starring, because lets face it I kinda stood out! (People would even whip out cameras and phones as I walked by to snap a shot, take a video, and occasionally ask me to pose!)
So I ended up wearing jeans as much as possible to hide my skin as a way to blend in. Not that it really fooled anyone but it made me feel a bit more comfortable with all the starring. I wish I had had a maxi skirt with me because it would have been so much more comfortable in the heat than the jeans I had with me. I now feel like a maxi skirt or dress is a must have in any wardrobe and will defiantly be picking on up this summer!!

Personally, I've yet to see a maxi skirt look good on anyone, models or otherwise. I find that the tea length is much more flattering.

I love super long skirt. I'm 5'8" and wear heels with them so I have no worry about looking stumpy. What I like best is in today's world you can wear a mini one day and a maxi the next and it's all okay. When I was growing up back in the ancient 70s, there was only one skirt length per season so everyone was in the same thing, whether it looked good on you or not!
ReplyDeleteThumbs down! on the Maxi skirts unless your 5'10 and above and really thin they don't really look that good on. Now the maxi dresses that are sleeveless with the sort of low cut front and tie around the neck are a better look for other body types.
ReplyDeleteMaxi skirts, yes! This particular one, no! The stripes are really unflattering, the fabric is far too heavy and the shape is wrong. Personally I'd look for one in silk or a light jersey that drapes your figure rather than encases it. x

A big thumbs up for maxi skirts, I have about four on my wishlist at the moment! I think they're a really good staple for day/evening wear for the summer. You can really dress them up or down!
