Do you guys ever listen to radio? On Saturday mornings, when I'm hanging out with Toby and stacking blocks on the floor and making his breakfast, it would be awesome to have a radio show playing in the background. Do you guys have any recommendations of shows you like? I'd love to hear!P.S. My one radio obsession: This American Life. (Don't you have a secret crush on Ira Glass?) Here are my ten favorite episodes. All so genius.

ps. and there were some great recommendations on twitter, too, thank you for those!!!
ReplyDeletethe splendid table!
ReplyDeleteI love Car Talk on NPR. I don't know why, but I do. Perhaps bc I used to always listen to it with my dad.
ReplyDeleteJohn in the Morning on KEXP dj's from 6am to - 10am Monday through Friday. He is phenominal. If you miss his show you can listen to it on demand. My kids and I love it!
ReplyDeleteI love This American Life too! RadioLab is also a very good one. It's similar to This American Life, in that it shares stories around a theme, but it takes a more scientific approach. mind-blowing!
ReplyDeleteI love Car Talk too!! as well as other gems on NPR - Science Friday and the quiz show on Sunday mornings. :)
ReplyDeleteI have podcasts! The Moth, Risk, and The Sound of Young America.
ReplyDeleteI love this American Life!
ReplyDeleteMy roommate just introduced me to an awesome British radio show called the Unbelievable Truth. It's hilarious and hosted by David Mitchell. Basically, there are four panelists who each have to give a short lecture about a give subject that is completely full of lies except for 5 true facts and the others have to guess what is true.
I listen on youtube. You can just search "the unbelievable truth" or I believe this user has all of the episodes: http://www.youtube.com/user/popgoesthekitty
You should compile a blog entry of some of the good suggestions to share!
I love Car Talk, as well! My mumsie always used to listen to it when she put her makeup on. I hardly remember any of the advice they give, but those boys are so damn precious I can't help but get v. excited when I have the time to listen.
ReplyDeleteI love This American Life too! My other favorite show is Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, also on NPR. In Salt Lake it's on at 10:00am on Saturday morning. I always do the podcasts though so I can listen to them any time.
ReplyDelete- Presidential Saturday Morning address (podcast)
ReplyDelete- Wait Wait, don't tell me (NPR)
- Prarie Home Companion (NPR)
This American Life can be stellar. I just gave my Valentine a card that had horn-rimmed glasses on it and said "I love you more than Ira Glass).
I love Sound Opinions and All Songs Considered. I also like to nerd up my Friday's with Science Friday's.
ReplyDeleteOh, I love this game! Some favorites:
ReplyDeleteFreakonomics, Stuff You Should Know, CBC podcast Rewind and BBC podcast In Our Time. All really fun to listen to!
do you have any favorite This American Life episodes? i haven't listened to it in ages and can't wait to get back into it!
ReplyDeletethese are such great comments!!
ReplyDeleteRadio Lab is also a really great show. It is similar to This American Life, but the stories are based around "science". The topics cover anything from the science of pop music to the science of your brain on love. It is often funny and always moving.
ReplyDeleteI pretty much listen to NPR all weekend/evening long. "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" is on on Saturdays and repeats on Sundays where I am - it's a funny news quiz they do out of Chicago. "The Splendid Table" is always entertaining, but dangerous to listen to if you're hungry. Here in DC, Sunday night after 7 is the big broadcast where they do episodes of old radio shows: "Dragnet" and "Johnny Dollar" etc, you have to be in the mood to listen to crackly radio but it's fun if you are. There are fun shows coming from Canada: "As it happens"
ReplyDeleteIf you're listening at home, you can stream most public radio station through ITunes or from their sites.
There is nothing better than Radio Lab. You can listen online or download the podcasts. You'll get addicted quickly.
ReplyDeleteI love This American Life! World Cafe, Splendid Table and Moth are my other favorites. The simplicity of radio is so calm and endearing to me, I love listening on the drive to and from work.
ReplyDeletei've been a fan of This American Life since the late 1990s - the episodes have been consistently brilliant for the past 10+ years. i also love Terri Gross 'Fresh Air', but thanks to NPR online i can now have NPR on in the background all day long :) i can't work in total silence very well so it's very comforting to have a low volume of NPR programming on throughout the day. i turn it up in the AM and PM to listen to the news.
ReplyDeletethe Moth, RadioLab, Fresh Air!
ReplyDeleteWait Wait Don't Tell me is my FAVORITE. Also the 'Stuff You Missed in History Class' podcast is great - 20-30 minutes about interesting little facets of history.
ReplyDeletethis is so great!!!
ReplyDeleteI would say:
ReplyDelete- Radio lab
- WireTap (CBC canada radio - the host is often collaborating with This American Life). He is the Canadian Ira Glass... kinda.
- Third Coast festival (resound). A show on NPR-Chicago based on audio documentaries in English (therefor, you can have a Australian one, a British one...) under one weekly theme. It's very good!!
- the other good ones I know are French. But I'd be happy to share if you were interested!
http://le-fusil.tumblr.com/
Car Talk. I know nothing about cars but I love to listen to them. One time someone named "Ashley" called in to complain that her husband, a "professional driver," never let her drive the car when the went places together. The guys started laughing and asked if her husband was Dario Franchetti - it was Ashley JUDD! I also love Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me.
ReplyDeleteCartalk and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. Love them both so much.
ReplyDeleteA Prairie Home Companion, hoster by Garrison Keillor.
ReplyDeleteSo wonderful. Gently funny, with good music, poetry and literature.
Its on American Public Radio. I listen to it from their website archive online, here in the UK.

I love to listen to my local NPR station. They have great hosts, local shows, etc. At WFIU they have a wonderful Jazz show called "Just You and Me." I love This American Life, The Vynl Cafe, and Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me.
ReplyDeleteAll Songs Considered on NPR! I LOVE This American Life, too :)
ReplyDeleteRadiolab! The podcasts are free on itunes. So good!
ReplyDeleteTHE MOTH (also on NPR)! It is the *best* ... I love hearing other people's stories and they always choose interesting themes. Love Love Love it!
ReplyDeletei love TAM life too!
ReplyDeleteIra is awesome!
did you hear this one?
http://www.thesphinxandthemilkyway.com/2011/02/this-american-life.html
it was amazing!
i am also a fan of "Wait Wait Dont Tell Me"!
I love it
and always find myself laughing out loud!

ReplyDeleteJohn in the Morning, our wedding DJ and favorite DJ out there- broadcast's live in NYC on weekday mornings. He's a great guy, DJ, parent, and plays the best music on the radio. KEXP is by far the best radio station in the US.
I love the Splendid Table. You can listen to the show on your computer from their website. Great recipes. I also love the woman who hosts it.
ReplyDeleteStuff You Should Know by How Stuff Works and RadioLab are the two I listen to, in addition to This American Life.
ReplyDeleteI love Radio Lab and Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me both on NPR. also Fresh Air with Terri Gross, she has interesting people on her show, like Alice Cooper
ReplyDeleteFavorite This American Life episodes:
ReplyDeleteRest Stop
Fiasco
Tough Room
All so funny.
the current!
ReplyDeletepart of minnesota public radio, lots of great new/indie-ish, local, small but great music...tons of variety.
listen streaming online:
http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/services/the_current/
the djs have very pleasant radio voices and very interesting things to say. i love it.
My fave This American Life eps: Rest Stop (#388), Fear of Sleep (#361), Switched at Birth (#360), Life After Death (#359) and The Ghost of Bobby Dunbar (#352). I so wish Ira was my uncle that would take me to lunch and make me laugh. I adore him.
ReplyDeleteI dont know if someone already told you this, but two great cbc shows are "the vinyl cafe", a sort of folky variety show feel with Great stories, and "the age of persuasion" with terry o'reilly.
ReplyDeleteIt's really interesting and entertaining show about advertising and branding. These are definitely my faves.
Check out BBC Radio via bbc.co.uk/news/.
ReplyDeleteI love the Archers, daily at 11am pt, Book at Bedtime and more!
There is a abundance of fun things to listen to....
I didn't know about This American Life. I can't wait to listen. Right now I'm obsessed with documentaries and just can't get enough. Any recommendations?
ReplyDeletexoxo,
Courtney
If you're open to listening to podcasts instead of in real time...
ReplyDeleteThere's "Studio 360" with Kurt Andersen about Arts & Culture and a very amazing series focused on American Icons from "I Love Lucy" to Barbie to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello.
NPR's weekend program "All Things Considered" gives a great run down of what's happening in the world with provocative analysis.
"The Story" with Dick Gordon ties today's headlines with people's personal stories in intimate Q&As.
I'd definitely recommend "The Moth," as other readers have commented. It's so much fun.
And if you're interested in a wonderful "book on tape," there's Steve Martin's "Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life."
Jo!
ReplyDeleteYou can download the This American Life app. for your phone and you get instant access to ALL of the This American Life episodes sonce 1995. AMAZINGNESS!
I listen to so much NPR that I've lost touch with new music.
ReplyDeleteAlong with those listed above--Wait, Wait, Car Talk, Sound of Young America-- there's Selected Shorts On the Media, and Joe Frank. One of my new favorites on WNYC is Snap Judgement.
You should go on iTunes & click on podcasts button. One of the featured providers is NPR. Subscribe to your favorite shows & discover new ones!
I listen to WNYC pretty much all day, but individually I love the Leonard Lopate show, Sound Check, Radio Lab, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, and The Splendid Table. The Splendid Table is so calming to me, that might be nice for a Saturday. :)
ReplyDeleteCar Talk!
ReplyDeleteAlso, LOVE this America Life! Nummi was a pretty good episode and they also just aired one with the original recipe for Coca-Cola.
Also, if you haven't checked out TED Talks, I think you may like them! There's one by the couple that runs Babble that is really good!
It´s soo cool listen radio with my baby. Sometimes he dances the song or just pay attention. I live in Brazil so I can´t recomended any radio to you. But you can find anyone that play happy musics... hehehe!
ReplyDeletewww.amenidadeseafins.blogspot.com
I second the vote for KEXP! You can listen live on itunes (I think they actually also broadcast in NY), or you can listen to their streaming archives at their website.
ReplyDeleteSaturday mornings they have a great reggae program, but my absolute favorite is "Preachin' the Blues", which plays on Sunday mornings. So perfect for a cozy morning at home!
if you are a fan of this american life you might also enjoy wiretap podcasts which you can stream from the cbc website (im from canada, so i gotta represent)!
ReplyDeletethe host is jonathan goldstein who is also a reugular contributor to this american life.
as for favourite TAL life episodes, there are so many but one that comes to mind is
frenemies
featuring a great poem by david rakoff (who i also have a crush on, next to ira glass!)
enjoy!
My husband and I both have a crush on Ira Glass. And usually weekly my husband tells me some ridiculous fact that he learned from RadioLab. We used to listen to Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me every Saturday morning, and then A Prairie Home Companion (always reminds me of home) that night.
ReplyDeletecheck out "readeo" (readeo.com)for little ones - adorable!!
ReplyDeletewe listen to NPR and WYNC -
ReplyDeleteYou MUST listen to BBC radio! Such wide variety. We don't have anything like their radio here. It streams live on the internet.
ReplyDeleteI listed to BBC3 (mostly classical & jazz) all day at work. On weekends I'm totally hooked on BBC4, amazing news, drama, talk. And BBC7 is the tops in current music!!
I like to listen to Kim Komando the computer expert
ReplyDeleteI like to listen to home repairs
I like to listen to when the talk about dogs and cats
i listen to wait, wait don't tell me and this american life. and yes, i have a total crush on ira glass.
ReplyDeleteso many great recs! other than "this american life," i also love wnyc's radiolab show, the moth podcasts, PRI's "studio 360" and "to the best of our knowledge" from wisconsin public radio. i was actually just talking about my love for NPR and public radio programs over at http://bit.ly/f11k7M.
ReplyDeleteput me down for "whatever is on the local NPR station". my two-year-old has now discovered the radio and how to change the station, which is something i rarely do, and i'm always discombobulated when my "friends" aren't there to greet me in the morning.
ReplyDeletei love cartalk, whad'ya know, and travel with rick steves (which is on at 5pm on sundays here, so i listen while i'm making dinner or via podcast).
nikki, haha, i want him to be my uncle too! :)
ReplyDeleteI love This American Life. I'm from Canada, so I listen to CBC, they have great programs like the current (international current affairs) and Q (more arts related). The topics are great and they have great discussion. You can stream online.
ReplyDeleteso funny that everyone loves car talk so much, who would have thought?
ReplyDeleteI also love Car Talk, Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, and The Moth.
ReplyDeleteOn weekdays I love Brian Lehrer and Leonard Lopate on WNYC.
kate, that's AWESOME about the app -- i really really need a smart phone.
ReplyDeleteIt's so great to see some CBC recommendations on here already. I also vote for Wire Tap (bizarre, but good), The Vinyl Cafe (nostalgic story telling) and the Age of Persuasion (I didn't think I'd be interested in a show about advertising, but it's so interesting!). I would also add Definitely Not the Opera (pop culture and quirky stories). I grew up with the CBC, and I find it has a calming affect on me whenever it's on.
ReplyDeletei've been to the Moth in new york and it's so good. i didn't realize they had them online. i'm so glad for all these tips!!
ReplyDeleteI love Wait Wait Don't tell me! And they have podcasts so they are available at any time.
ReplyDeleteA Prairie Home Companion! Best show of all times!
ReplyDeletebott radio
ReplyDeletehttp://www.bottradionetwork.com/
so many great speakers! so much truth!
You would have to listen online... but 88.9 radio Milwaukee (http://www.radiomilwaukee.org/) has the greatest mix of Indie bands ever. Bon Iver, The National, Iron and Wine.
ReplyDeleteIt absolutely makes getting ready in the morning 125% more enjoyable.
A Prairie Home Companion is classic. Best listened to while cooking on a Saturday summer evening with the window open. Ahh-relaxing!
ReplyDeletehttp://ladeedahkab.blogspot.com/
I echo my fellow Canadians who've recommended Wire Tap. It's like the slightly zanier, metric cousin of TAL. "The Dinner Party" and "The High Cost of Living" are two of my favourites.
ReplyDeleteAnd CBC's Vinyl Cafe is sweet and folksy - great Saturday a.m. listening.
(and who doesn't love Ira Glass!)
I know its already been said but I'm from Minnesota so I have to mention it again but the current is one of the best radio stations I have ever tuned into. Great place for discovering new music and hearing a really wide variety of indie tunes. They stream live online: thecureent.org.
ReplyDeleteI listen to the whole day lineup though PHC. (With some running in & out.) I heard Alex once on The Splendid Table, BTW.
ReplyDeleteCheers.
Radio Lab!! If you like This American Life, you'll love it!
ReplyDeletefrom WNYC.org
*LOVE* TAL too and Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me. The Splendid Table is terrific to listen to while making dinner. :-) All are on public radio.
ReplyDelete(great idea you have here for this post - interested to see what everyone else is listening to)
I'm a Radio obsessive! I don't listen to much American radio but if you'd be interested in something outside of America then this is really great series I love: http://www.rte.ie/radio1/doconone/
ReplyDeleteI too am obsessed with TAL, I first discovered it during college in 2003. My one problem is that I've listened to all of them...every single one. And while I love to listen to them over and over again, I recently discovered a few other radio shows that are in the same(ish) vein, they can all be found as podcasts on iTunes.
ReplyDelete1. Things You Missed in History Class (even if you're not a history buff, this show makes history really interesting.)
2. Radio Lab (quite similar to TAL)
3. Freakonomics (an entertaining and simple way to understand the economic state of things)
enjoy!
I absolutely love Praire Home Companion. They have great musical artist and it just simply hilarious. I turn it on every week and listen.
ReplyDeleteI also love Wait, Wait, Don't tell me on NPR.
CBC radio (Canadian station) is great with awesome artist.
We don't have tv or cable so the radio is often on and the radio shows break up the same ol' same ol' the radio stations usually have on.
I helped start Utah State University's radio station...and - totally unbiased - it is AWESOME. They can basically play anything they want...keeping FCC regulations in mind, of course. But, if you're in to discovering new (and totally underground - for the most part) bands, this is the place to go. You can stream it online at http://radio.usu.edu/
ReplyDeleteI know people have already said it, but I just have to throw in my two cents for KEXP! I'm blessed to be from Seattle as we all adore this radio station. It's the best! One of the highlights of my weekends is listening to Reggae (called Positive Vibrations) all morning (Saturday 9-12pm) and Preachin' the Blues (Sunday 9-12pm).
ReplyDeleteIt sincerely puts a smile on my face!
I'm Canadian, and I love listening to Stuart McLean's podcasts--they're a bit hokey, but also really charming and funny. You can find them on http://www.cbc.ca/podcasting/ (where there are a bunch of other great ones!)
ReplyDeleteAlso on the CBC is Jian Ghomeshi's show "Q," which has really good interviews with interesting people. And Ghomeshi is seriously cute.
Ditto on the Moth! They are really great!
I love Splendid Table, on NPR. I always have NPR playing when I work on Saturdays at the coffee shop. So great.
ReplyDeleteafter a busy week of quick breakfasts, like smoothies and bagels on the run, i always wake up and make a big southern breakfast..potatoes, eggs, bacon, sometimes pancakes, ect.. i will wake up first and go to the kitchen and start clankin around while my husband relishes his time to lay around after 5 days of early mornings. he calls our 2 dogs in and cuddles, and they get so excited knowing the routine and that he is home for the day with us. when he gets up he always goes straight to the office and turns on radioparadise and it is always so good and matches our mood and the day with new and old solid good tunes. i wouldn't change any of it for the world!
ReplyDeleteeastvillageradio.com is really cool and they have an app for the iphone.
ReplyDeleteThe Morning Show with John Richards on KEXP is AMAZING. I can't get through the morning without it!
ReplyDeleteyup, total crush on Ira Glass. I also love Car Talk, ReSound, Sound Opinions, and Radio Lab.
ReplyDeletebest love story i have heard recently: http://www.radiolab.org/2011/jan/25/finding-emilie/
ReplyDeletesooooooo good! you must listen!
i am a big radio girl:
http://www.cbc.ca/q/
radio lab, this american life, etc.
favourite this american life episode: unconditional love.
xx oo
Oh yes, we actually have podcasts for road trips of This American Life.
ReplyDeleteNPR pretty much plays non-stop at our house in the background. Nothing says Saturday morning breakfast and cuddle time like Prairie Home Companion!
Best,
Tina
Fearlessradio.com is. a great station. It's internet radio so there arre no commercials, there is also no FCC so the topics are wide ranging. Fearless Mornings with Hank and Cat is good show, think it's on Monday and Wednesday at 9 in the morning. CST
ReplyDeleteUhh Yeah Dude!
ReplyDeleteTHEY ARE SOOO FUNNY.
CBC, which is available to you on Sirius I think, has great shows. I'm echoing several previous suggestions but The Age of Persuasion, Wiretap and The Vinyl Cafe are all worth mentioning again.
ReplyDeletei love wait, wait don't tell me and car talk on NPR..
ReplyDeleteStuff You Should Know is a great podcast too, they explain everything from samurais to how the Twinkie empire was started!
you really can't beat This American Life. pure genius, that one.
ReplyDeleteIra Glass is the MAN. I saw him in person being interviewed by Dave Eggers. SO awesome.
ReplyDeleteI love podcasts, and radiolab is a close second to Ira. This story in particular made me weep....
http://www.radiolab.org/2011/jan/25/finding-emilie/
My absolute *favorite* is Wait Wait Don't Tell Me! If we have time we tend to make a ritual of lazy Saturdays and NPR. Car Talk is hilarious whether you're interested in cars or not just because of the character & wit of the 2 brothers that host. Also, I've fallen for A Prairie Home Companion after watching a documentary on Garrison Keillor called something like 'The Man in the Red Shoes'... it was really beautiful.
ReplyDeleteTOTALLY radiolab. it is incredible - the parasite episode is my favorite. i talk about it ALL the time. (does this make me a nerd?)
ReplyDeleteNPR!
ReplyDeleteYes, I do...and I have proclaimed this on Facebook even.
ReplyDeleteRadio lab... heaven.
ReplyDeleteYes! We listen to them while making dinner during the week and every Saturday we have Wait Wait Don't Tell me On while we eat a late breakfast. Any NPR broadcast is recommended and in addition I listen to Film Spotting which is actually aired on Chicago's NPR Station and is all about movies. We received a cute little radio that connects to our Ipod for Christmas and have used it every day!
ReplyDeleteMMmm.. I just listen to the radio sometimes in the morning when I wake up... A little bit of music to start the day happier.
ReplyDeletehttp://soyfrivolita.blogspot.com/
89.3 The Current. MN based public radio. They play the best music. You can stream it!
ReplyDeleteWoman's hour on radio four (available as a podcast) is literally the perfect mix of soothing and mind stretching.
ReplyDeleteThe Moth stories are great - not sure if they are on the radio, but you can download podcasts (the new age radio).
ReplyDeletehttp://www.themoth.org/
My all time very fave This American Life is "A little Bit of Knowledge". The woman confessing to believing in Unicorns well into adulthood kills me every time.
ReplyDeleteYou can listen here:
http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/293/a-little-bit-of-knowledge
Filmspotting is a wonderful podcast for movie reviews and all kinds of "top 5" lists. Very smart and easy to listen to.
ReplyDeleteMy fave programs on NPR are Fresh Air, Forum, A Way With Words and Wait Wait... Don't tell me
ReplyDeleteI listen to the podcast edition of DNTO (Definitely not the opera), since I can't listen to it on CBC radio.
ReplyDeleteThis American Life is my favorite, too. Have you heard the "House On Loon Lake" episode? They compare it to a real life Hardy Boy mystery. It's fascinating and suspenseful and incredibly moving.
ReplyDeleteAlso:
Splendid Table
World Cafe
Car Talk
Fresh Air
Diane Rhem
All Songs Considered
Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me
I have to agree about any podcast or radio show with David Mitchell. My husband is British and I'm American but we both find David Mitchell hilarious. He also does a bunch of British quiz shows on tv and is in Peepshow, one of the funniest and raunchiest sitcoms. I'm kind of surprised that an American network hasn't tried to rip it off yet.
ReplyDeleteShialing
Ira is my absolute favorite! He came to my school last October and I became even more addicted than I already was. A few people have recommended the Moth-- I love it, too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding me about This American Life, have never yet caught up with it, but listen to NPR all the time. Ira Glass did a great article for Times about his girls fighting over a cheap plastic thingy, so true and so hilarious about family life. Also got hooked on David Sedaris who also featured on This American Life. The funniest American writer besides Bill Bryson (though lives in France). Oops Im rambling on...
ReplyDeletemy favorite This american life episode is "the breakup" or something like that...starley kline's attempt to write the prefect breakup song leads her to tlaking to her sad song idol..Phil collins. SO perfect.
ReplyDeleteand I love Speaking of Faith (now called "Being"), RadioLab, and Freakonomics the podcast. :)
radio!
ReplyDeletesad to say that i actually have no recommendations. the last time i listened to radio was in high school when my dad drove me school in freshman year and every morning, we would listen to npr together.
i'll check out some of these other suggestions for when i'm working out at the gym though! it'll be better for my development to listen to the freakonomics podcast (especially as an econ major) than to just listen to chris brown over and over again hahaha
WFUV A loacl NYC station play awesome tunes during the week... very eclectic and lots of cool new bands, but then add a bit of country, classic rock, soul... everything but pop and hip hop! The weekends can be a bit dodgy though, but you can stream the weekday shows. My favourite on there at the moment is Broken Bells. You should give them a try! Awesome! Great to support local radio! Lx
ReplyDeleteSounds like everyone has recommended my favorites (second to TAL, of course!): The Moth and All Songs Considered podcasts and listening to KEXP (Seattle represent!)... you can stream it on KEXP.org.
ReplyDeleteKatie
Terry Gross's Fresh Air is terrific radio-- she covers the arts as well as current events. Radio Lab is also a favorite, they always have something fascinating and inspiring to say.
ReplyDeleteI'm from Chicago originally, so I was listening to Ira G. way back in the day. I'm sorry to say as I've gotten older I find him more whiny and annoying than interesting.
My favorites to listen to as podcasts:
ReplyDeleteThe New York Times Book Review
NPR's Fresh Air
NPR's On the Media
Slate's Culture Gabfest
All are informative and fun and totally engaging. I listen to them every week without fail.
I really like the header here
ReplyDeleteThe Current from Minnesota Public Radio {you can listen on itunes/online}.
ReplyDelete"The Current brings listeners the best authentic new music alongside the music that inspired it, from local to legendary, indie to influential, new to nostalgic."
They have all sorts of cute 'themed' radio programming alongside the new music they play. It's constantly on while I'm working.
I have to second my fellow Canadian Erin's recommendation of Definitely Not the Opera. It's got great theme music (by Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy), and the host, Sook-Yin Lee has been involved in a few films, most notably (to Americans, I would think) John Cameron Mitchell's Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus (she's the main character in this one). You can listen to podcasts of the shows at cbc.ca, but you're better off to catch them live on Sirius or through the CBC's online stream (it's on Saturday morning/afternoon), because then they play all the cute indie music in between the stories.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog, Joanna!
my husband and I always enjoy a dose of Car Talk on the weekends even though we live in nyc and don't own a car. :)
ReplyDeleteThe Splendid Table is my favorite, though the live broadcast is always played around lunchtime...
ReplyDeleteIf you enjoy food shows, Radio France has recordings of "ça ne se bouffe pas, ça se mange" that are really good.
I love radio shows, I have podcasts of most NPR shows like the tiny desk series, all songs considered, etc. I really like listening to Radiolab too!
ReplyDeleteI really like Radiolab (science stuff) also and NPR Shorts (short stories).
ReplyDeletei have nothing to add that hasn't been said, except that my crush on Ira Glass is no secret. lol. I have a Facebook profile pic of me kissing this pillow: http://www.etsy.com/listing/29751762/ira-glass-pillow
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting discovery you've made! Radio wasn't killed by the video star after all apparently.
ReplyDeleteEmphatically support the CBC recommendations by my fellow Canadians (smitten with Stuart McLean who's joined many family road trips and even successfully captivated the attention of our teen boys)
Very timely news (as of March 1st) is that BBC Radio 4 is releasing a 500 episode plus vault of Desert Island Discs. A classic! A notable guest spends an hour weaving his or her favourite music, book and luxury item choices into a great interview. You'll love it!
Always enjoy your posts - this one has been particularly fun!
Radio Lab, Dinner Party Download, Says You, and everything on KCRW, which streams live at kcrw.org for anyone outside of SoCal!
ReplyDeletenpr has a great new happy hour program. here is a link to a recent one about pop culture for kids:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2011/03/04/134257725/pop-culture-happy-hour-set-apart-from-a-sentence-by-an-exclamation-point
I LOVE This American Life. WBEZ (the NPR member station in Chicago where the show originated) is having it's spring pledge drive this week. Unfortunately, I am broke-ass poor right now and can't donate. So Ira Glass is on this morning, begging for pledges, and my husband walked in on me talking back to him ("Oh Ira, I wish I could") while I was doing my hair. Lol.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI love This American Life! I actually did a project on it in high school lol. I love your blog, it's adorable, I'm so glad I found it. I'm definitely going to follow it.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.thevanitylair.com/
The only one I could suggest is This American Life so I'm thrilled to read the suggestions of all your readers!
ReplyDeleteI love Definitely not the opera on cbc. You can listen to past episodes here -
ReplyDeletehttp://www.cbc.ca/dnto/
They pick one theme per episode and then tell stories, and play good songs about all different aspects of that theme. I am always laughing or crying while driving around doing errands! haha.
BBC 6, especially on the weekend. I adore Cerys Mathews, she always plays a really interesting eclectic mix. Though I suspect if you're listening from the states it would be a little early in the morning.
ReplyDeleteI am absolutely 100% unable to drive without music on the radio... seriously!
ReplyDeletexoxo
C.
I love listening to the radio. I've always have an old one in the bathroom (great to take some musical shower) or in the kitchen and baby Aditha loves to see his mother dancing thanks to the radio. We have some great times together.
ReplyDeleteMany of the podcasts I listen to in my studio in New Zealand are from USA. Joanna you REALLY need to listen to Music Lessons - from This American Life (I cried laughing on the train on the way home).
ReplyDeleteI also recommend Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, The Moth and for pure listening pleasure then you really can't beat Selected Shorts - it's stories read aloud for adults and every single one is fabulous.
NYC's Radio Lab, is by far the most interesting radio show in the nation. The stories are engaging and though provoking. You can download them as podcasts too! It's really an awesome program.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love This American Life and Splendid Table. I can also never get enough of "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me." You can listen to podcasts here http://www.npr.org/programs/wait-wait-dont-tell-me/
ReplyDeleteI'm also an Ira Glass fan, and enjoy too the Car Guys on NPR weekends.
ReplyDeleteSince your home state of Michigan is technically in the Midwest, you might like Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion." His voice is so soothing and his stories are hilariously Midwestern. It's on public radio on Saturday evenings, but I think there are podcasts online so you can listen whenever you'd like.
ReplyDeleteNPR!!
ReplyDeleteSupporting my fellow Canadians on here: Q with Jian G and Definitely Not the Opera with SYL (both CBC) are fantastic!
ReplyDelete"Wait, Wait! Don't Tell Me!" is my fave.
ReplyDeleteI also like the podcast "Stuff You Should Know."
Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me is hilarious especially if you've kept up with the weeks news. I also like to listen to The Story. It comes on the the evenings most places, but you can download the programs for free from their website. Always interesting.
ReplyDeleteI love Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. It always makes me smile, by ex bf and I used to listen to that in the car on the weekends on our way to pick up bagels! It's fun to listen to/play with someone else
ReplyDeleteI love This American Life. I met Ira Glass once and was so surprised at the number of girl groupies following him around the party:)
ReplyDeleteI love love love This American Life! Radio Lab is another one that I enjoy.
ReplyDeleteWhile radio shows are alright and all, nothing beats listening to a baseball game on the radio on Saturday morning. So relaxing. (I can't believe no one's mentioned baseball)
ReplyDeleteHandel on the Law on KFI AM 640 its also available in Podcasts. It's really hilarious and actually quite interesting. People call in with legal matters and he tells them that they or don't have a case. He's very honest and very funny! I strongly recommend!

- All Songs Considered. I have to have a notebook close at hand so I can write down all the songs I want to download later.
ReplyDelete- Science Friday. One of my favorites to listen to on road trips.
-Savage Love. No one has mentioned this?! Funny questions and great advice. Not for the young ones though. Also I love his laugh!
One of the things I miss most about living in LA is Morning Becomes Eclectic with Jason Bently on KCRW. There is a fantastic weekend show "weekend becomes eclectic" also. Great tunes and some interviews. I think you can download or live stream.
ReplyDeleteAlso, i just downloaded the This American Life app for $3 on iPhone and I am in heaven!!
NPR!
ReplyDeleteIf you have an iPhone, there's a great app called 'Tune-in Radio' and you can connect in (almost) real time to international radio stations, record the radio and skip through songs. I love listening to the French radio station 'Oui FM' while I'm making dinner, because (due to the time difference) the morning show is on and I pretend I'm making breakfast in Paris..
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be long (sorry!): We listen to NPR (WNYC) - This American Life, Brian Leher, Leonard Lopate, Fresh Air, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me and the Sunday Puzzle (sometimes via their podcasts, sometimes live). We ALSO love Mark Kermode (he is awesome - he's a movie reviewer for BBC - this is a must - check him out!), Slate's Culture Gabfest, Savage Love and WTF with Marc Maron (it's a little racy - he interviews comedy folk). Since we don't watch TV when the little one is up we end up listening to radio/podcasts a LOT!
ReplyDeletethis is my favorite post of yours, and I really love all your posts. The love of radio! And Ira Glass, yes! I have a crush - but partly because his voice sounds like that of a dear friend!
ReplyDeleteFrom 10am to noon (Pacific time) on Saturdays: West Coast Live (KALW 91.7).
ReplyDeleteAnd on NPR: Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me.
And PRI/NPR: Selected Shorts (short stories read aloud on NPR, Saturday night, 8pm), Michael Feldman's Whad'Ya Know (91.7 at noon on Sat.) and Studio 360 are also wonderful shows.
Adding to the chorus of recs for The Moth and Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!
ReplyDeleteJohn in the Morning on KEXP! This is an incredible show on an incredible radio station based in Seattle and broadcast in New York as well. His very young son co-hosts the show every once in a while and it's stinkin' adorable. John is also one of the hosts of KEXP's annual Kids' Dance Party. Hilarious! Little ones bopping around all over the place to the likes of Cut Copy and The Black Keys.
ReplyDeleteThe vinyl Cafe on the CBC. It's brilliant and I listen to it from Australia every week (I podcast it).
ReplyDeleteOh radio! One of my true loves. Ok, I am going to jump on the bandwagon for a lot of these: TAL (my husband and I fantastized about Ira officiating our wedding), Radio Lab (listen to the one about HELA cells. It killed me), Car Talk (when those two get laughing, it is pure joy), The Story (really solidly good interviewing), and The Current from MPR. (Twin Cities public radio WINS!)
ReplyDeleteI would also recommend the podcast "Saltcast." It is made by students of the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, and it is usually fantastic.
If you're looking for music, rather than talk radio, in the mornings, try WEVL community radio from Memphis. They stream from www.WEVL.org and the music mix each weekday is fantastic. It's the ONLY radio I listen to in the morning!
ReplyDeleteI grew up listening to Car Talk with my Dad and still tune in now. He wasn't a big car person, and neither am I, but the brothers and their Boston accents are wonderful, and it still is one of my favorite things on the radio.
ReplyDeleteJo,
ReplyDeleteThis is not a kid-friendly suggestion, but I love listening to "Savage Love" online for my fill of all things sex-relationship related!
The Archers. It's a radio soap that's been running in England for over 50 years & it's still going strong. It's hilarious & I especially love listening to the British accents.
ReplyDeleteI wish we got some good ones around here.... Though we're more TV people in my family.
ReplyDeletePlaying It Cooley
I'm obsessed with Radio Lab and Costing the Earth by the BBC.
ReplyDeleteI love Ira Glass and can't turn the channel when he is speaking - no matter the subject!
ReplyDeleteWhen I lived in LA I got hooked on "Good Food" on KCRW on Saturday mornings. Still now, living in Boston, I download the free podcasts on iTunes and listen to them when I have my morning coffee on the weekends. It is hosted by Evan Kleiman, the chef/owner of Angeli Caffe in W. Hollywood. She has the most joyful voice and contagious laugh. Hearing her talk about food just makes you happy. Sometimes I listen to them a week late but she always has interesting guests and it doesn't even bother me that part of the show is about what's fresh at the farmers market (except sometimes during the winter I get extreme fruit envy).
mvyradio - an independent station on Martha's Vineyard! You can stream from their website: mvyradio.com
ReplyDeleteI was a dj out there for about a year and a half, and have lots of love for the folks at the station and what they play.
All Songs Considered f/ npr is also great, and the free goodness from learnoutloud.com (eg - the essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson Podcast).
Happy listening!
If you like Fresh Air, you will LOVE Radio Time with Marty Moss-Coane. She's amazing!!! It's broadcast out of philly's WHYY as well, except it's a call in show, making Marty's hosting all the more impressive to listen to. I drive a lot for my job and am addicted to her podcasts.http://whyy.org/cms/radiotimes/
ReplyDeleteA couple of people mentioned Radiolab, but I have to give my enthusiastic recommendation for it too! It's seriously one of the best series I've heard in years. Funny, interesting, heartbreaking (only sometimes), and beautifully produced. I just listened to "Lost and Found" one of the latest podcasts and have been thinking about it for weeks! Truly inspirational stuff.
ReplyDeleteYou should stream The Current from Minnesota Public Radio, www.thecurrent.org. They play music, old, new, classics, and everything in between. Sunday mornings are my favorite, with The United States of Americana. Super kid friendly and fun too! Every year they host Rock the Cradle for kids and their families at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. I don't listen to ANYTHING else!
ReplyDeleteHi Joanna!
ReplyDeleteI think it's been mentioned already (so many good suggestions), but check Definitely Not the Opera (http://www.cbc.ca/dnto/), which is amazing. They take a topic like secrets and dive right in. Fantastic. Also, the Monocle Weekly podcast (http://www.monocle.com/The-Monocle-Weekly/default.aspx) helps make me feel smarter each week!
And I love all the public radio show love in the comments! Hope everyone is a contributing member of their local public radio station whether you listen to the great programming online or on the radio!
ReplyDeleteThe Moth has an awesome weekly podcast.
ReplyDeleteSince no one else has mentioned it, I'll plug radio 1190 (www.radio1190.org.) It's a student-run, non-commercial radio station in Boulder, Colorado. You can stream it online and it's a great way to learn about new artists and new music. They also have a number of long-standing specialty shows that play specific genres (country-western, covers, psychedelic, world, etc.)
ReplyDeleteLOVE NPR. Have all the radios tuned on NPR. My favorites are Car Talk, Radio Lab, Wait wait Don't Tell ME... And I do have the hots for Kai Ryssdal's voice. :D
ReplyDeleteSlate's Culture Gabfest.
ReplyDeleteWhen doing lots of travel, I fell in love with KCRW's Good Food podcasts. YUM! They go to the farmer's market and report on what's out (yes, a better selection in LA, where they broadcast, but still) and then lots more features. And my husband loves Dinner Party Download from American Public Media. Gives you current events, a joke, and a drink idea, all to impress at a party.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to add my voice to the chorus of those praising RadioLab!
ReplyDeleteJoanna,
ReplyDeleteI'm telling you, you have to listen to the episode House on Loon Lake if you haven't already. It's the most exciting mystery story of an abandoned house with antique treasures in it.
THe classical station broadcasts the opera from the met every saturday, it's super relaxing and very beautiful! our classical station here in Philly is 90.1 not sure what it'd be up in NYC...
ReplyDeleteWho doesn't love This American Life??
ReplyDeleteI have an autographed picture of Ira framed on my wall (thanks to a friend who interned there and knew of my obsession)!
But, after I listed to every single TAL 5 times over I moved onto "Stuff You Should Know" podcasts- Free on itunes. The 2 guys who host it are hilarious! Listen, learn, and laugh. What more could you ask for?
It's one of the top podcasts on iTunes for a reason! It has sort of changed my life just like TAL has...
CBC radio - quirks and quarks (sciency stuff!)
ReplyDeleteI also like TED talks, all of them :)
I love This American Life!
ReplyDeleteI listen to WXPN out of philly all the time. The weekend morning show, Sleepy Hollow, is great! You can listen online.
My dad listens to so many! haha xx
ReplyDeletecar talk and wait wait don't tell me on npr are great!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure someone must have recommended Radiolab. You can get past shows, free, from iTunes. And yes, I have a crush on Ira Glass!!
ReplyDeleteWe cook dinner to npr radio online
ReplyDeleteHi Jo- long time reader, first time commenter. Having just moved back to the US after 10 years in London I highly recommend the Adam and Joe show from BBC Radio 4. In the US you'll only be able to download podcasts from the BBC Radio website. Their show is on a break at the moment but even the archive shows are fantastic- a mix of talk and music. Love your blog!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00876k2
oops, that's BBC Radio 6 (not 4!)
ReplyDeleteI love This American Life as well! I also listen to Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me every week and love it.
ReplyDeleteMy best recommendation, though, is The Writer's Almanac. I subscribe to the podcast on itunes and it's a little snippet everyday (about 5 minutes) of biographical information about various writers throughout history who have their birthdays on that day. At the end of each segment there is a poem. The program is read by Garrison Keillor, from A Prairie Home Companion, which I grew up listening to in my parents' car, so his voice in completely soothing. It updates everyday, but a lot of times I get backed up and listen to a lot in a row; I think it would be nice to listen to a week's worth on Saturday mornings for you!
IN love with ira glass!!!! Fresh Air is great too.
ReplyDeleteThe Moth Radio hour is most excellent! As well as RadioLab (omg, the episode on time ALWAYS blows my mind) and LiveWire! out of Portland, Oregon.
ReplyDeleteMy crush on Mr. Ira Glass is anything but a secret ;o) However, I would recommend Radiolab, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, and Fresh Air.
ReplyDeleteOlá, estou conhecendo seu blog através de outro que sigo.
ReplyDeleteGostei muito daqui, me permite seguir?? Gostaria de acompanhar seus devaneios.
Bjs da lua e bom Carnaval.
=))
Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me on NPR is the best! I look forward to it every week. It's a weekly new quiz with a hilarious panel and celebrity call-ins! highly recommend.
