Alex and I were reminiscing last night and realized that we went on our very first date exactly four years ago! I remember feeling giddy and nervous as I walked over to meet him at the Angelika Film Center. We saw The Lives of Others, the suspenseful German film about the East Berlin secret police. It was really intense and my heart was in my throat as we watched it.
Afterward, we took a cab over to Cafe Cluny, one of my favorite restaurants ever, and ordered steak and scallops, followed by two glasses of port, since it was one of Those Great Long Leisurely Dinners.
Then Alex walked me home, and, although I was usually a pretty slow mover (I'm a Michigan girl!), we kissed outside my apartment. The funny part? We were on Bleecker Street, so even late at night, crowds of people were passing by. Three drunk guys passed us and yelled, "Look at the lovers!" Romantic. :)Another funny thing was, since we both really liked each other, we were searching for signs during the date that the other person was (or wasn't) into it. I got nervous when Alex offered me a bite of his steak, but then placed the piece of steak directly onto my plate; did he not want me to eat off his fork? And he later admitted that he thought the date was shot when I didn't lean on his armrest at the movie, but instead leaned toward the other side. So funny how nervous people can be when first dating!
Needless to say, it worked out, despite the armrest gaffe. And now he lets me eat off his fork:)
What about you guys? What did you do on your first dates with your main squeezes (or past boyfriends/girlfriends)? I'd love to hear...

Happy 1st Date Anniversary! My wife and I still have the receipt from the dinner of our first date. :)
ReplyDeletecute post - made me think of my first date with hubby and we were TOTALLY looking for signs too!

What a sweet tale. I remember that German film. Now if I ever see that movie again I will think of you!! {A first date I went on many moons ago, was to the cinema with a young Marine, and then after a midnight walk we ended up slow dancing on the Oceanside pier in Oceanside, CA.}
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I have much the same story of our first date... all during dinner we were trying to read each other. Like he wouldn't try some of my food but then he did take a sip of my iced coffee. I didn't know what to think lol! And I'm usually pretty slow too but we ended up kissing at the end of the night! Teehee!
ReplyDeleteOur first date will be 5 yrs ago this June and I remember it like it was yesterday :)
I met him in geology class in college (we were both geology majors) and I invited him to go canyoneering in Zion.
ReplyDeleteWe fell in love repelling down red rock cliffs :)
My husband and I went on our first date six years ago this summer -- it was a Lynard Skynyrd concert at the county fair!
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize until this year how funny all of the details are. We rode a big ferris wheel together, he helped me off and I wore daisy dukes. Definitely details to tell the future kids.
Love that you took note that he put the steak on your plate versus feeding you. On the first few dates it's hard not to notice every little thing.
so lovely to hold onto such sweet memories!! ahhh
ReplyDeletehttp://missmollyfashions.blogspot.com/
aw, stephanie, that is so cute!!!
ReplyDeleteLove this post!
ReplyDeleteMy hub and I have been married since '94, and are actually late highschool sweethearts...I know...groan!
He's my best friend and when we go out now on a date while our 12 year-old looks after her younger brother, we're still giddy with each other. Honest.
I love hearing about first dates!
ReplyDeleteWe went to see Wayne's World! He held my hand during the movie, but no kissing that night! (and we're from California... imagine that! =)
aw, luli, that sounds so romantic!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, happy anniversary of first date. But what I'd like to know, if you don't mind saying, how did you guys meet? Not asking for intimate details, just a category. Chance due to work. Chance (period). Knew same people. Party. Etc.
ReplyDeletePS: I give big points, btw, for going to the film on the first date. I tried that & a guys said, "oh bummer." He was off the list then.
I knew people there, had travelled to GDR, etc. He knew that & was totally disrespectful about my experiences. So. At least I knew right away.
these are such fun to hear!! an invitation, that sounds so romantic, and nadine, your comment made my heart swell! :)
ReplyDeleteCo Cute! My husband and I also went to the movie on our first date "The Omen". LOL, so romantic right? H
ReplyDeletee went for my hand, and held it through the whole movie. It was so exciting just holding hands (I'm a Michigan girl too). I don't think either of us were thinking about the movie, it could have been a blank screen for all we know.
susan, we met at an academy-awards-watching party at our friends' house :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I met in a Williamsburg bar. I took him home 20 minutes later and despite my best efforts to get rid of him the next morning, we were married less than a year later! Isn't love amazing like that?
ReplyDeleteWell, I am so glad you did! xo
ReplyDeletehaha, jayne, i love holding hands during movies...the only catch is that they get sweaty and then you sit there thinking, should i move my hand and wipe it off and if so what will he think?
ReplyDeleteahhh, the crazy analysis of a first date! :)
go, brandy!
ReplyDeleteLove your story :)
ReplyDeleteWe went to the movies in High School on a Saturday afternoon... I still have the movie stub & freaked my (now) hubby out when I pulled it out the other day. He couldn't believe I still had it 5+ years later.
That's so sweet. I wish that I had a memory like that. My boyfriend of 4.5 years and I met in college, so we never had an official first date. We would hang out a lot since he lived with some of my guy friends in the same apt as me. We both love how we were able to get to know each other in a casual setting.
ReplyDeleteHappy 1st Date Anniversary! beautiful images! love the movie
ReplyDeleteHow did you meet?!
ReplyDeleteTheresa
http://frockthis.blogspot.com/
Our first date was weird. My now-husband invited me to a movie with him and a friend and even though it was nothing I was interested in, I jumped at the chance. I had just gotten out of the shower, threw my hair up and booked it to the theater.
ReplyDeleteWhen the movie was over, our friend said he had a "meeting" to go to (on Sunday... at night), and left my husband there without a ride. We crossed the street to a pizza place and sat and talked for a long time.
We went back to his place and watched Scrubs and, like you, pounced on him at the end of the night. I'm definitely not a first-date kisser but I had a good feeling about him. I guess I was right!
adorable :) my first date with my now beau of almost 3 years was a disney themed dance for my college dorm. . . i dressed as boo from monster's inc and he showed up in a high school musical tee he bought at the disney store earlier that day . . . he's thin, but let's just say the kids xl was still teeny tiny on him :) It was adorable. Later that night we did the hand grazing as we walked, and finally he just grabbed my hand. then i knew :)
ReplyDeleteon a past first date with an old boyfriend, we went to a movie (Good Will Hunting) and snuck in mini bottles of wine. it was great!
ReplyDeletecoco, i love that you watched scrubs!! :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I met sophomore year of high school. We became best friends then kept in touch through all of life's moves. He visited me in college one year then again 3 years later after I had moved across the country for grad school and admitted he had had a crush on me since that last visit. We've been together ever since. So, in other words, no idea what our "first date" actually was. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy First Date anneversary! My boyfriend sent me flowers on our 1st date anneversary last year. On my first date with my boyfriend, we went out to dinner and walked down Michigan Ave (chicago) to see the Christmas Lights and window displays. He later told me that he was really suprised when I grabbed his hand to hold while we were walking because he wasn't sure how the dinner portion went. 2 years later, we are still together, living together with the most perfect dog in the world. :)
ReplyDeletewhat an absolutely lovely story! Happy first date anniversary to you both!
ReplyDeleteMy hubs and I went to the thrift store and purchased classic 80's outfits and had our photos made at the Wal-mart portrait studio on our first date. I knew I loved him when we BOTH thought that would be a fun evening.
theresa, we met at a friends' oscars party :) i basically forced alex to sit next to me. http://glmr.me/fqUttU
ReplyDeleteJoanna, these are such cute stories! I met my husband on a red-eye flight to Chicago. We sat in the same row with an empty seat between us. Paul is tall (6'1") but he offered to let me stretch across the 3 seats and sleep while he scrunched down on the floor and read his book. He was SO uncomfortable but didn't want to wake me! We spent our first day together (though it technically wasn't a date) wandering around D.C. monuments and galleries. No kissing but a definite love-at-first-site type of connection. Nine months later we got engaged - on the first of the month to coincide with our meeting on the first day of the month! kathy
ReplyDeleteI love hearing first date stories from couples who are now married! How long did you date before getting engaged?
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I were best friends before we started dating, so on our first real date both of us were thinking the whole time.. Is this a date? Is this really happening? It was in Harvard Square. I remember everything, ESPECIALLY all those little hyper-analyzed actions (legs touching on the T ride, what does it mean?? Haha.) I've enjoyed reading all the stories in the comments as well!
Thanks for sharing.

So cute-love hearing about real romance.
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend and I met at a celidh (a Scottish dance) and I love the fact that he remembers every little detail about that night- we talk about it often!
i am currently seeing a man who makes me swoon everytime we see each other, email or talk. on our first date, met for a 5 hour long happy hour. it was a happy time indeed. 2nd date? we saw Biutiful and i cried my eyes out and he held my hand. the 3rd date? we watched Harry Potter & he kissed me during the credits. swooooon.
ReplyDeletethat is too cute.
ReplyDeleteme and my now fiance met in college and the first time he asked me out was to a monster truck rally (i am not kidding). it was kind of a joke outing with friends and so i ended up saying yes because he was so cute.
in the end he got nervous and decided to take me out the night before the rally. so we saw the movie Hitch and ate at Panera.
i still have the $4 tshirt i bought at the truck rally though and love to bring up the fact that this was our supposed first date. (the secret lives of a mild mannered scientist and doctor pair ;)
sigh it reminds me how young we were! but now 6.5 happy years later were getting married this fall ;)
My boyfriend and I went to a soccer game at our high school. He was so sweet, and I was so excited to just sit on the bleachers and watch the game with him. 3 years later and we've never watched another soccer game! :) Turns out neither of us really like the game but just wanted to go out together!
ReplyDeleteJoanna, I just read your story on Glamour about meeting Alex and then asking him out... I love that you shared it and encouraged others to take risks - bravo! And congratulations on your first date anniversary since I forgot to add that before! kathy
ReplyDeleteOh my husband and my first date we went and got icecream, stayed sitting at our table for like six hours just talking. Around dinner we accidentally had dinner with his grandparents, sister, aunt, uncle and cousins!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely one of the most terrifying dates of my life!
Happy first dateaversary,
Eliza
http://elizaligaya.blogspot.com/
Oh my goodness, great first date movie! Beautiful film, you couldn't have picked a better one.
ReplyDeleteOur first outing was a group one and at a certain point I thought he was into another girl. Then for the first real date we had lunch and when we walked outside, it was terribly cold but bright & sunny and he simply held my hand.
The rest is history...
THat's so cute. uGhh the begginning of dating is horrible! I can't wait till I have a great boyfriend and we laugh about our first dates as well!
ReplyDeleteSo so cute! First dates always heighten your senses and make you soo nervous! (Especially if you really like the guy!)
ReplyDeleteLook at you two now, fashionable, in-love parents to the cutest little boy :)
Wow I've never had a first date go that well or last that long. I normally stick to a coffee date, just in case it is rocky.
ReplyDeleteA Michigan GIRL!?! Where are you from? I thought you were a native New Yorker. I have a whole new love for your blog <3
ReplyDeletei just remember how TERRIFIED i was on the first real date i had with my boyfriend. i gabbed on and on because i was afraid there would be awkward silence!
ReplyDeletehttp://alainasdailydo.blogspot.com/
I met my fiance 4 years ago today! We celebrate this as our anniversary, but our first official date was actually 2 days later. And how funny that we got engaged on your wedding anniversary back in August.
ReplyDeleteHappy first-date-iversary to you and Alex!
The day we met my husband knew within 1/2 hour that he wanted to marry me. "Don't ask her yet or she'll think you are nuts," was what he told himself. Later he played one of his songs for me and I started singing along and blew him away. He didn't know I was a fan.
ReplyDeleteHe took me for a walk in the redwoods and the trees blew me away.
15 years and 3 kids later life is good :)
Oh the armrest gaffe! One such snaffu (at The Angelika no less) recently demoted a "possibility" back down to just friends. Maybe I should reconsider?
ReplyDeletethis is adorable. and hilarious. i've just started going on dates and i totally know this feeling. so funny.
ReplyDeletehow did you guys meet?
nevermind. i just saw you met at a party (:
ReplyDeleteThat's so sweet! My boyfriend and I went to an art museum on our first date. We ended up being asked to leave because we sneaked into the Cezanne exhibit without a ticket haha. After that, we went to a tea place and my favorite book store. The date was officially a success when it ended in our first kiss by the river after nervously scrutinizing signals all day :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I met when I was just shy of 19, and he was 24. We met at Waffle House (!) in our tiny rural hometown on my summer break from college. For the first date we went to the movies, and I didn't know it was a date until he paid. The next night, I invited him over to watch The Royal Tenenbaums. I was so nervous while we watched it on my mother's sofa- did he like me? I made the first move - I touched his hand with my little finger. I now joke that if I had not done that, we would never have gotten married!
ReplyDeleteWe have been together 7 years and have been married since August. We now live in Nashville, and "another dent here" is still one of our favorite jokes!
That's an amazing first date! We (my bf and I) were actually reminiscing the other day too -- we met halfway through our 1st year of university at a party that a (great) friend had dragged me to. He asked me out the next day when he brought back a sweater I'd forgotten there, and asked what my favourite flower was. Just, y'know. I said prairie fire lillies, because I was really homesick and they're amazing. He found one (in the Maritimes!!) and brought it to me on that first date to the local art gallery. we had so much fun comparing all the art and our ideas of it, and walked home with (sweaty, nervous) hands clasped together despite the freezing wind. It's been three years since last valintine's.
ReplyDeleteMy wallet got stolen on my last first date (about nine months ago, we're still very happy!).
ReplyDeleteI remember we had lots of cocktails and had dinner at a nice tapas restaurant. He was going to pay and I wanted to sneak some money into his pocket, but then noticed my wallet had gone missing somewhere in between cocktails and dinner. I probably would've felt really awful at another time, but since the date had been so much fun I couldn't really be upset.
We were 15, he rode his bike to the movie theater and met me there. I was so nervous I could barely speak when he asked me if I wanted pop corn. 20 years later, he still rides his bike to meet me for a movie.
ReplyDeleteOn my very first lunch date (not even a real nighttime date) with my now husband (10 years ago!) we had thai food and he offered me some of his and I just dove right in with my fork. I thought it was completely normal but I found out much later he was kind of scandalized! We tended to scandalize each other a lot in the beginning, but somehow it all worked out anyway.
ReplyDeleteSuper sweet post!
http://nomadic-d.blogspot.com/
You guys are so cute together! Happy Anniversary!
ReplyDeleteWe met when we were 5. At 16 we hung out the entire summer...beach, lake, movies.(just friends)
Our first date we went to the mall, walked around (didn't hold hands) saw a movie and then went to eat at a diner afterwards.
Many moons later we have 2 kids and we still hold hands ;)
I now live with my boyfriend but not so long ago we were in a long-distance relationship. Yesterday when we were cooking he told me about the last time he went visit me and I went pick him up at the airport, he said I was so nervous I couldn't really drive and that three different cars honked at on our way home. I don't even remember that!
ReplyDeletewell, the first time we hung out, he took me for a late night ride around town on his vespa. but i guess our first 'official date' was a month later when he took me to see toy story in 3d . . . the big goofy glasses made it impossible for me to glance over to see if he was enjoying himself. he's admitted since that he wanted to glance over at me the whole movie but couldn't because of those stupid goggles!
ReplyDeleteAwww! That was really sweet! I was giggling while I read your post. :)
ReplyDeleteMy first date with my boyfriend was at a school playground near my house. We talked a lot and played on the swings. A very sweet date indeed. :)
My husband took me camping on a beach for our first date. WHAT WERE WE THINKING. But when a guy can pitch a tent, build a fire, and cook you dinner over it—you marry him.
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute and so true! On my first date with my boyfriend, he took me to the movies and I DID lean on his armrest. tee hee. So glad you guys didn't read all the signs! Look how beautiful Toby is because you didn't!
ReplyDeleteI love reading these first date stories!
ReplyDeleteMy fiance and I were friends throughout our first year of college, and I really thought he didn't like me that way. Then second year, during a hurricane, we were hanging out in our dorm and started a pillow fight. In the middle of the pillow fight he leaned forward and kissed me. (My brain: !!!) Lots of kissing followed during the hurricane, and we had our first "official" date a few days later. It was a picnic in one of the university's gardens, followed by my favorite movie "Annie Hall." He got major date points for putting it all together. Now we're getting married this fall!
aw! what a sweet story. this made me happy. i'm also about signs and what not when it comes to boys/crushes..hehe..it's all about the little details, right?!
ReplyDeletehappy first date anniversary and you guys are super adorable together. =)
Great story! I love the little details... and the "signs" you were both picking up on, hehe.
ReplyDeleteOur first date was to the horse races. Very exciting! I can remember my nerves so vividly! xoxo.
so sweet! happy 1st date anniversary. my husband got me a cupcake on our first date and i was hooked :)
ReplyDeletehorse races? vespas? i want to frame these comments :)
ReplyDeleteThat is so stinkin' sweet! My husband and I met when we were both dating other people and even though we didn't start dating until much later (after our relationships ended) we both said that when we first met, we felt "something". It was like a scene out of a movie: I almost ran into him, we made eye contact and then introduced ourselves. A year later, we were dating and then another year and we were married.
ReplyDeleteI love reminiscing. You guys have a sweet story!
haha, yes, carrie, i grew up in Rochester Hills!
ReplyDeleteMy boy and I have a funny first date...a random dive bar and singing Karaoke. We are the worst singers in the world, but belted out John Denver's Country Roads and Oasis Champagne Supernova--such weird karaoke songs, but somehow perfect. He kissed me on the cheek b/c he didn't want to be forward, and we kissed on our first "real" date. So fun :)
ReplyDeleteMy future husband and I met for sushi at the same place I had gone on a terrible date two nights before. The guy was 30 minutes late, tried to blame me for giving him directions to the wrong restaurant, only ordered one roll and then passively aggressively told me he was vegetarian. Then he tried to kiss me before leaving me to walk home in the freezing cold. Fun! But I thought at the time that if I was going to be dating regularly that I would just choose the same restaurant as kind of a control.
ReplyDeleteSo, two days later I met my future husband at the same restaurant. He was early, ordered more food then we could possibly eat, was charming and absolutely refused to let me pay. (Southern boys are sweet that way.) We ran into friends of mine at the restaurant and he assumed I had sent them to check up on me. I hadn't but he still jokes - five years later - that I did. Then he drove me home and didn't even try to kiss me even though he told me later he was dying too. Aww. We made up for it on our next date and I never had to have another first date.
Hurrah for anniversaries! Your first date sounded perfect.
so so cute, joanna! i love first date nerves. we were friends/co-workers for a long time before going on a date. for our first hang as MORE than friends we decided to hit up the driving range. i remember being SO nervous and panicky wondering why the hell i chose to wear jeans on a hot sunny day. so sweaty and uncomfortable. plus i had my back to him on the range, so i was completely preoccupied with finding a way to gracefully bend over to put the golf balls on the tee every time and keep my sunglasses from falling off (failed on all accounts). but i don't think he noticed! afterward we went out for the best burgers in town. while i've learned not to wear heavy jeans for athletic activities on a sunny day, i do still get all fluttery before every date :)
ReplyDeleteThis is so sweet!
ReplyDeleteI remember going on a semi-date once to see Hamlet at the ART... I was maybe twelve...
windeater.blogspot.com
oh joanna. your blog never fails to make my day brighter.
ReplyDeletethis is adorable! I never get tired of hearing mw's version of our first date. I think he may remember the details better than our wedding!
ReplyDeleteMy fiancee and I met courtesy of facebook (his roommate was a friend of mine from HS) and met in real life at a pig roast in September at a local farm. On the plus side, the farm hosts this pig roast annually and we get to go each year and think about that first date. We were both nervous and his friends thought we were adorable and stared at us all night. We'll be on our honeymoon this dating anniversary, but I think that's OK. :)
ReplyDeleteRochester Hills. Well if you haven't been to the D lately you should pack up Toby and visit. We're a happenin' place these days. The summers are especially hopping. Plenty of blog material :D
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I's first date was a group outing to a rave in London. We got off the tube with everyone else then since we were so into talking to eachother we got lost and never made it to the Rave, instead we sat under a tree in a rather sketchy part of London (we were approached by 3 different drug dealers) and talked for hours. Less then two months later we were living together so I will say it was an exceptional first date!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun memory! My first date anniversary with my husband is coming up too. Our first date was at a wedding reception -who would have thought?
ReplyDeleteI love hearing stories like these!
ReplyDeleteI waited five months for a date with my boyfriend. We met while we were on vacation in Lisbon; he live in New York and I live in Sweden. So at Christmas I finally went home for vacation and we were able to have our first date. He took me to the Redhead in the East Village after he'd researched the perfect place for weeks (I love Southern) and we were both so nervous! Afterwards we went to Musical Box and inched closer and closer to each other on the sofa as the night went on. Eventually we ended up making out like teenagers :-)
I love thinking about our first date. Sigh.
i met my boyfriend at a wedding too! i was a bridesmaid and looked awful! i guess he saw past my horrible dress LOL
ReplyDeleteThis is a very sweet story. My lovely boyfriend took me to see King Kong (King Kong! ugh) on our first date. It was three entire hours long and I totally hated it. That was five years ago, so just goes to show that bad dates can have happy ending too :)
ReplyDeletemy boyfriend (well, ex as of a week ago :-/ - darn the distance!) and i met on an airplane. i was leaving a family reunion in san francisco and he was leaving a friends wedding. we both tried to offer our seats up when the flight was overbooked, but since they didn't take either of our seats they upgraded us to sit by each other. i couldn't stop thinking about all the little things and analyzing him from my peripheral....ahhhh so giddy : ) then our first date was on halloween when we went to my coworkers house party. they brew homemade beer and when he was calling out the kinds to me he said, "porter, pumpkin, ale, ..." and i yelled back "pumpkin ale!" everyone laughed because it was one or the other...not a flavored ale. i couldn't help thinking how goofy he must've thought i was............lol honest mistake, but i forgot about it when we had our first kiss outside. awwwww.........anyway, we're broken up now, but makes for a good story anyway haha ;-)
ReplyDeleteone of my most memorable first dates was actually three days long, and took place in three different towns and two different countries, ending at a lake out in the country. no lie.
ReplyDeleteaw, what a fun first date story! ours will have been 10 years ago in september (geez, that's forever ago!). but i can still remember almost every detail of that date, down to what we were both wearing. crazy, right?
ReplyDeleteThat's sweet. I have to admit, though, I'm not sure I'd want to eat off a guy's fork on the first date. But I have counted dates as shot when they didn't try to hold my hand during movies, or if they didn't offer to walk me to my car (on one date we met up in the city, and it was dark by the time we got out--I'd walk even my friends in that neighborhood!).
ReplyDeleteA Marx Brothers movie marathon. He had me by Horse Feathers!
ReplyDeleteI just started following your blog, and I love it! Every post is a great read. Not to mention I love your hair tutorials( I am currently sporting the braided bun!)
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend and I met while volunteering at an opera house. It took a while for him to ask me out, but when we went on our first date we went to a play(which I thought was going to be an improv show, but turned out to be childrens theater!) and then out to for lunch. Not wanting to end the date yet, we decided to go wander around Ikea.
We still love wandering around Ikea and reminiscing about our first date.
Happy First date anniversary! My husband and I met online the first week of January three years ago. I suppose it was one of those New Year's resolutions to open myself up to finding love. We talked on the phone and emailed and had so much in common we just where just smitten.
ReplyDeleteOur first date I met him in front of his apartment and when people talk about love at first sight this was it. It was a cold night and we where both bundled up in the chilly Chicago weather but I had this perma-smile on face the whole time. We didn't drive we took the CTA and ended up at a jazz bar. Too early for anyone to be there. Then before we knew it we met up with his best friend and his date for dinner. We laughed and flirted and his friends where great and next thing you know the evening turned into early dawn when we went back to his apartment to discover that it was jam-packed, full of moving boxes. He had moved back from San Francisco a month earlier and had not even unpacked. We spent the rest of the morning going through some boxes and basically learning so much about this man I was over the moon about. The longest and the best date ever. We eloped the following March, got pregant that May have a beautiful 1 year old daughter, and I am currently expecting our second daughter due on June 1st. ;) Best date ever.
Aww this is so cute! It makes me wonder how many potential relationships could be ruined by people reading each other the wrong way. Which is just sad, in my opinion.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.thevanitylair.com/
Such an adorable story!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first met my love (we've now been together for 4 years) we were both in unhappy relationships with what we now know were horrible people! We flirted but of course as we were attached left it at that. When we bumped into each other a year later we were both single and oh-so-over the exes - we've literally been together ever since ♥

i love this post and i love romantic reminiscing! my first date with my bf of 2 years was very casual. we went for a bikeride and took pictures around Winter Park, Florida and ate burritos at a place near train tracks, and afterward i called my mom and told her i am in love. haha! i was really nervous too, it is so funny to find out all the little silly details/thoughts years later! also, do you have a twitter? i wanted to tweet you a picture... i am wearing your braided up-do today! i LOVE it!
ReplyDelete<3 steffy
Steffys Pros and Cons
Our first date was actually more of an audition for me: I went to lunch with him and one of his friends. Things went well, so the next day we went on the real first date to the movies. We saw "About Schmidt." I remember I wore this really itchy lavender turtleneck sweater from J Crew, and he was late (which I soon found out is always the case).
ReplyDelete6 years and 6 months later, we got married. We hadn't planned it that way, but that was the only day the judge was free. Exactly 8 years to the day from that first "audition" date, our son was born (January 17th, 2011). He was scheduled to be induced that night, but decided to come on his own that afternoon instead! I think it was fate.
Love this. Maybe we all should take a few moments out and share things like this with our loved ones. <3
ReplyDeleteI just about squeeled while reading this at work, I actually had to stop myself! Such a sweet sweet little post.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Check out my blog, I linked your hair DIY in a recent post, it is beautiful! (Not my post, your DIY... haha)
Oh Joanna, what a beautiful story. I've been divorced since 1993 and while I've been on a few dates & had a few relationships since then I've not met "the one".
ReplyDeleteJust this Friday night I went out to drinks, then dinner with a man that had me looking for signs that he was interested because he created butterflies in my stomach and made me feel like a teenager instead of a woman of slightly over 50...lol.
At then end he walked me to my car and we hugged (he's a good hugger) then we talked and he asked for another hug and then we talked some more and then I said, "Well now it's my turn to ask for a hug cause you got to ask for one." (I know...how fresh am I!...lol.) And he gave me a hug and as we broke away he gave me a quick kiss on the lips and I don't even remember the drive home as I felt I was floating on a cloud!
Hope this works out. We've talked everyday since by phone or text & we're going out again this Wednesday. Wish me luck, I would love to have what you have with your wonderful Alex!!
it wasn't exactly a "date", but the first time i met my husband we spent about an hour playing with the blocks at an all-night copy place (i guess meant for kids who were waiting for parents?) while he had transparencies made for a presentation for one of his classes. the second time, we met up to play foosball at a bar on campus. he's still my favorite playmate.
ReplyDeletehow funny that i felt giddy and giggly reading this! ha ha. we went antique shopping and then out for mexican food. four years later, we're celebrating our first wedding anniversary (next month) by living abroad in barcelona for the year. xo
ReplyDeleteMy first date with one particular guy was pretty standard... we went out for a drink.
ReplyDeleteOur second date, however, is referred by both of us to this day as "The Best Date Ever." He lived in an artist's loft apartment with concrete floors, and I showed up with a bag of supplies and surprised him with an idea I had: I rolled out a white bed sheet, turned on some UV lights, and pulled out bottles of fluorescent paint. We put on our bathing suits and painted the giant canvas using our hands. He was shy at first, but he ended up painting Wonder Woman arm bands on me, and I painted a Superman logo on his chest. I never thought I'd say this, but kissing while covered in glow paint is is absolutely mind-blowing!
Afterward, I joked that he could keep the painting as a souvenir... and he ended up hanging it on his wall. Two years later, it's still there.
Oh, this is fun. I have to join in.
ReplyDeleteI met the boy I'm seeing now on a blind date, where I met him for coffee (except, as it turns out, I'm a tea drinker and he loves hot chocolate, so there was no coffee actually on the table). Our first real date was a trip to the movies and dinner, but what really sealed the deal for me was when he asked to meet me on my lunch break later in the week. He was the first boy to ever brighten up my work day like that--it was better than flowers. I met him outside my office building, and found him sitting on the steps with a book in one hand (Sherlock Holmes) and a bike helmet in the other. That was only about two months ago, and we're still very new--but I'm excited to see where we're headed.
We had been friends some two years when we finally went on our first date. I had just moved back to St. Augustine, Fl to attend school and hubby was working at a small coffee shop. He invited me to the shop after hours and had made us some drinks and snacks. We chatted and laughed over our coffee drinks until late when we decided to walk around historic downtown by the waterfront. We ended up at the old fort (Castillo de San Marco) and sat on the sea wall arm and arm until almost morning...
ReplyDeletethe rest is history ;)
Our first date was an Eddie Izzard show. We had met at work and been flirting for a few weeks. He had bought the tickets months before not knowing who he would go with.
ReplyDeleteWhen he asked if I wanted to go, he was surprised that I knew who Eddie Izzard was and was a fan.
He later told me that he knew I was a keeper when I laughed during the show more than he did.
It doesn't sound that romantic, but it was our mutual sense of humor that sealed the deal. 8 years, a wedding and a baby later we can still make each other laugh hysterically.
My boyfriend and I have the funniest first date story ever! It's actually awful. First, he arrived late at the movie theater. I had already bought the tickets... and he didn't pay me back! It's like he was possessed, because he's a true gentleman (in almost 5 years, he doesn't let me pay for anything, seriously) and the most incredible guy I know. The movie was terrible and, at the end of this disaster date, he offered me a ride home. I said thank you, but I was going to a friend's house. He got jealous (he told me that later!)... and left! I went to my friend's house, laughing so hard and thinking "what a jerk! well, I don't need to see him again!".
ReplyDeleteAfter 2 or 3 months of totally ignoring him, we started talking again and he asked me out. I had a birthday party and invited him to go with me. The most perfect "first" date ever. "Soul-mate-like". Now, after 4 years and 7 months, we're still totally in love :)
my first date with my boyfriend was exactly 3 years ago! so apparently we have the same anniversary. :) we did something very similar as well - saw "In Bruges" after chatting and having coffee. He invited me out for dinner after, but I didn't want to rush things since we'd already been out for a few hours (need to leave them guessing a little!) so he totally thought I wasn't in to him. However, we went out two nights later for dinner and the rest is history. :)
ReplyDeleteMy hubby and I had mutual friends, so we had been to the movies and hung out in the neighborhood together, but not TOGETHER together!...Our first "Date" alone was to a movie. I didn't want to go...Long story...*giggle*...We went through a hold "thing" about our goodnight kiss too. Isn't new love grand?! ^_^ ... We're married 29 years this year and I have to say 'Old Love' is pretty good too!! :-]
ReplyDeleteWe were in high school; 16 & 17 years old. The fourth Harry Potter book had just come out, and we went and read it in the park (each had our own copies, of course). We also kissed on our first date-- the first time I had ever kissed anyone without calling them my "boyfriend" first! Scandalous!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you shared your story. Got in my girly "squeee" for the day : ) So cute, you two!!
my husband pretended he needed a date to this party for our first date, and asked our mutual friend to set it up. we had met before and he was insanely quiet, so of course my response to our mutual friend was "well i guess i'll go out with him, but will he talk?" well, our first date was about 12 hours long, so yes, he could definitely talk. i was smitten with him after about an hour, he made me laugh all night and his smile was and still is killer. i wondered if he would kiss me good night, even after he asked me out for the next night during our first date. 12 years later, here we are.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to ruin the ending by telling you that this guy & I are now married & I'm a week away from delivering our first child, but maybe that'll be reassuring you of a sweet ending, not ruining it!
ReplyDeleteWhile I was getting my teaching credential, I worked evenings relaying calls for the deaf. This guy (a few years younger than my 23) was in my same training class & we were friendly. I definitely didn't think of him as romance material, but when a few of us suggested going to see The Lord of the Rings (whichever one came out around Christmas 2001), I threw him an invitation too.
That day, everyone cancelled last minute (holidays, etc.) & it ended up just being the two of us. I tried to politely excuse him from the outing, but he insisted that he wanted to go, even with just me.
We went to the movie, grabbed a casual dinner & he walked me up to my apartment. We started talking & hung out for about 10 hours total. By the middle of the night, I had taught him some swing dance moves (much to, I'm sure, the dismay of my downstairs neighbor), we'd watched another movie, played a board game & shared stories.
Now, it wasn't a date, per se, but just one of those accidental evenings that turns into more than expected. As I walked him to the door, light pinkening the sky, I was slightly shy, anticipating - a hug? Kiss? Heartfelt sentiment?
Instead, he turned & fairly ran down the stairs to his car.
Disappointed, but laughing at myself for so completely misjudging the situation, I went to bed. I got an ecard from him that night (seriously, who does that?), and judged him too confusing for me to understand.
The next day (Monday), he came by at lunch. Thinking it was a friend of mine, I opened the door (recklessly, as only a 23-year-old will) in a t-shirt & underwear. I gasped, slammed the door in his face, and went to change.
It turns out that, although he knew where I lived & my email address, he didn't have a phone number & had to stop by to ask me to lunch. We went to lunch, and he drove me to work - first that day, then the next.
I had no intention of dating him - especially after his clumsy handling of our first "date," but he was persistent. I never meant to go out with someone younger, but somehow we were dating, and then he lived with me, and we were moving into our own place.
After 5 years, we got engaged. After 7, married. After 9, we're expecting our first child.
And, amazingly, I figured out the reason he was so scared / intimidated on our first date. I was his first & only kiss.
Thanks for sharing Joanna. My eyes welled up a bit! Boyfriend and I met on Mardi Gras two years ago and have been together ever since. It's so fun (and important) to remember special little moments in time like that. Lovely post :)
ReplyDeleteI love this story!
ReplyDeleteI went with one of my best friends to her home in South Korea. She introduced me to a British guy working out there. I was so excited to meet my first Brit!! So excited. But he was aloof and not so cute despite the accent. So 2 years later when I took a job in South Korea as a teacher and found out he was going to be my one and only coworker I was relieved. I thought, "At least I won't fancy him." But he wooed me ever so gently. He wasn't so rude and a bit cuter the second time round. We got married 10 months later. Aw bless. He's so lovely.
How sweet! Love that you both thought the other wasn't interested. Our first date was a great Mexican restaurant and after we went to a museum. Fast forward after 6 years of marriage. The museum had a great re-grand opening after extensive renovations and my dance company performed at the gala this last year. It was special for me for many reasons.
ReplyDeleteI met my boyfriend of two years at work. We had an employee art show and I entered some of my photography. He gave me a call out of the blue to tell me how much he liked my work and we ended up chatting for about an hour after which I was pretty smitten. I was dog sitting for my coworker at the time and remember going home and telling her dogs how much I liked this guy...they were very enthusiastic.
ReplyDeleteIt took him about two months of little conversations, emails, book exchanges, etc. but one particularly lovely Friday in May he asked me out for a drink which turned into dinner which turned into one of those magical endless conversations that lasted until 3 AM when he dropped me off at my apartment with the understanding that we needed to see each other again as soon as possible. It was great.
It still is :)
i love this. so, so sweet. it's true, at the beginning you look at everything as a potential deal breaker. how great to not think anymore 'does he like me?!' :)
ReplyDeletei also saw lives of others on my first date with the boy!
ReplyDeleteAw. What a charming little story!
ReplyDeleteJust shy of seven years ago, we agreed to meet at a charming Montreal café called Santropol at 8pm. I thought it was for dinner, and he thought for tea… so, I ended up eating a meal, and he had tea. It was awkward and also silly but amusing… I didn't let it make me feel *too* weird that he essentially had to watch me eat. We chatted for four straight hours until they kicked us out.
I thought things were going fabulously when he offered to walk me home, but when we got to the gate of my apartment, he gave me a patted hug. I was sure the date was shot… unlike you, I'm a bit of speed demon that way, getting those awkward waits out of the way as quickly as possible. I was totally shocked he didn't go for the kiss. Turns out he was just a gentleman and inexperienced in the ways of love… he'd never walked a girl home, let alone made a move! Now, having moved to three different cities together, we eloped, and living it up in CA… so, I guess it all worked out in the end. We're about to have our delayed wedding festivities, so it warms my heart to think about these things.
Thanks for cuing these sweet memories!
:) love it
ReplyDeletethe 22nd of March ist my birthday - and three years ago I spent my first night at my todays boyfriends place...
Beautiful story, but I'm in shock, because 4 years ago about a month my boyfriend and I started dating and we are still engaged. In 4 years old you have married and you have a child, while we continue to almost the same starting point. Definitely things in America are fast and big, here in Europe things are slower and why even think we have similar ages.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the story is very beautiful, like most real love stories. Congratulations on everything!
Dawn.
Oh, I love it! You and Alex are just so sweet about each other, it's heartwarming! And I'm loving all these stories people are posting! My boy and I met one night when our mutual friends took us out to explore Portland since we were both new to the city. We talked and danced all night then a few days later (our first "date") we met up just the two of us and went hiking around the waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge... But it was almost three weeks before we ever kissed! We weren't purposely waiting, we just didn't realize we had inadvertently been dating! Now it's two and a half years later and we're still all twitterpated :)
ReplyDeleteWhat an adorable story!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite first date went like this: He took me to a restaurant that he researched to make sure it had gluten-free options for me and turned out to be one of my favorite restaurants! Then he took us back to my place and we carved pumpkins (he had bought the pumpkins and all the tools to accomplish carving them). He was so thoughtful and made me laugh so much that night.
I'm 19 and have been with my guy for the past 3! on our first date we went to the park and just laid in the grass talking and eventually kissing ^_^ the whole afternoon! I still about it all the time!
ReplyDeleteI have such a good New York love story. My sister and I tagged along with her husband on a business trip to Philly. We decided to spend a night in New York and met my college friend in Soho. We went back to her place and I was getting ready to go out for the night, I came out of the bathroom and saw him. She had invited this guy to hang out with us since he didn't know very many people.
ReplyDeleteWe ran around Brooklyn, taking pictures in front of graffiti walls, eating falafal, drinking beer on the waterfront and on rooftops. It was a night packed with adventure.
He came back to her apartment and slept on a floor mattress while I layed in bed thinking about him.
The next day I invited him to come back to Philly with us. He went home to change and met me on Fulton St. in downtown Brooklyn. He had us take the Williamsburg bridge train so we could see the best NY views before we left and he brushed my hair off of my face. We took a Chinatown bus back to Philly and that night we danced and finally, kissed! Three months later he moved to Seattle to be with me but New York will always be our city, the place we fell in love!
So many great stories in the comments!!!
ReplyDeleteMy husband (Matt) and I met in college. I was dating someone from home - the guy was nice, just not my type and the closer I got to Matt, the less I liked the other guy. Matt and I started as friends, but we just liked each other and got along so well that we couldn't resist.
Matt and I went to downtown Chicago on our first date, and he took me to the PickMeUp cafe. (Anyone else been there?) The alternative vibe was so casual and perfect. We went to a used bookstore afterward and talked about music, books we loved, etc.
5 years later, we still go there and do the same thing. He's my best friend. :)
your date sounds so lovely and so perfectly first date-ish.
ReplyDeletemy first date with my husband was spent at a basement pizza joint on a university campus... we were with some other friends at this point (quadruple date) but we were sneaky and held hands under the table. it was followed by starbucks (alone) while sitting in a bookstore in the poetry section. just talking and laughing like we already knew each other. so perfect.
Cute 1st date =) My husband & I also just passed our 4 year dating anniversary! We just went for bubble tea after his hockey game & then walked me back home, at which point he claimed he was leaning in to kiss my cheek but I thought otherwise and turned my head to kiss him on the lips.
ReplyDeleteHow fun is it to reminisce! On our first date, we took a roll of film (yep, this was 2006) from my now-husband's trip to Hong King to be developed one-hour and got some chinese food while we waited. I remember wondering if this was in fact a "date" as we had hung out some before, and determined it was when he offered to pay. The best part, his fortune at that meal read " You will be happy in marriage." I blurted out "We should keep that!" (at this point I was already planning our wedding:) That night I taped it into my journal, where it still lives! I had big plans to frame it together with one of our wedding pictures, but now, 4.5 years of marriage later, I still haven't. One day...
ReplyDeleteAnd we are "happy in marriage"!!
I so love that story. How sweet! My first date with my sweetie was almost 4 1/2 years ago. I nervously waled to his house and we went on this totally awkward/adorable date. We walked on the beach and ended up at a cafe nervously sipping coffee. It was really sweet.
ReplyDeletexo
Funny, I met my love 4 years ago too !!! The 22th march 2007... The movie for us : "Ensemble, c'est tout"...
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary! Four years, wow! On our first date my husband and I went to a park and fed ducks at the pond, it was simple and relaxed. We still debate about who it was that "accidentally" pushed a turtle off the log. It's so fun to reminisce.
ReplyDeleteThat is the sweetest recap ever. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeletethere's no beating around the bush with this one: my boyfriend and I met in a bar (he was visiting LA, I lived there) and ended up going home together...we both assumed it was a one night stand!
ReplyDeletebut the next morning, we both realized that um...maybe we really liked each other? and just a few days later we decided...let's try this out for real? and a month later we realized...we're totally in love! and 3 months later I moved to Chicago to be with him. our two year anniversary (of that "one night stand") is coming up on April 12!
and we're still super in love. it gets better every single day. I love thinking back about that day.
We met at a cupcake shop :) After cupcakes and coffee, we didn't want it to end so we moved it to an Irish bar for a beer. The ENTIRE time, I was looking for signs. That was 1.5 years ago. I told my mom after our first date that he was the man I would marry. (He still doesn't know this!) We're not engaged yet, but one day. For now, I'm content being with the man I'll marry one day.
ReplyDeleteThis is just too sweet :) I've been on a few great and creative dates: antiquing and then going to an old fashioned candy shop, drive-in movies, making sushi, indoor camping (that one was probably my favorite, there was a tent set up inside and we made s'mores on the grill outside).
ReplyDeleteI find it altogether comical the length and reach of the first date neurosis and how awkward it seemed looking back at it all.
ReplyDeleteAll of these stories are an absolute delight to read. Thank you for sharing your with the us.
I think you could say that we made our own film that day. A picture perfect film that began with lunch on the pier and ended with us racing that big orange ball in the sky down Pacific Coast Highway to get her back to class on time. The whole endeavor was filled with nervous laughs and inquisitive gestures.
cute story!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I had know each other since we were kids, then became really close friends about 6 years ago. After 2 years of being super close, we started dating and even though we been out to dinner and to movies many, many times together, our first official date was still as nerve racking as possible. My favorite moment was settling in to watch a movie (after a long walk in the rain to get to the theater) and I realized that I could hold his hand now. So I did. And it was one of the best moments of my life. :)
ReplyDeleteOK, I thought i'd posted this but it bounced me out...I'll try again.
ReplyDeleteMy first date with my now husband was also 4 years ago, almost to the day. It was a wonderful first date and I also spent a lot of time wondering if he liked me as much as I liked him....he touched my arm, he complimented my shoes (his best friend is a fashion designer), he seemed to be flirting...surely he liked me.
As drinks were clearly turning into dinner I suggested we went for sushi. This has become a legend in our history as I told Ben later on that I had never eaten sushi before but had always wanted to. I followed him through the whole meal, two beats behind, so he never realised I didn't know what to do. The sushi was awesome and so was the date.
As he walked me to the station he kissed me for the first time: the kiss was on the corner of one of the busiest streets in our town. We were told to get a room and somehow I lost a favourite earring. It was such a wonderful first kiss and has turned into the most wonderful marriage
Joanna, I love this story! Matt and I went on one of our first dates at the Angelika — we saw Paper Heart. It was so sweet! It's definitely a great date spot. Whenever we go back, we think of how much fun we had. Thanks for sharing your story! :)
ReplyDeleteRachel
Five years ago my fiance and I met up for dinner at a local
ReplyDeletethai restaurant. Once he realized that it was going well he suggested drinks after. During drinks he decided to invite me to his friend's birthday party at a karaoke bar that same night so we went there after. I always make fun of him for being so sneaky about not revealing all his plans at the beginning of the date, just in case it didn't go well.
Sounds like such a perfect first date!
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend and I met 2 1/2 years ago on a blind date! Our mutual friends set us up for my sorority date party. I didn't agree to it until the morning of because he was a rugby player, and I didn't want to deal with some guy's crazy antics! Turns out, he was the complete opposite. We were both so shy that it took halfway through the night for us to start flirting. Then, in a silly drunken dare, he dared me to carry a random balloon around the rest of the night, all over campus and 3 different bars. Turns out neither one of us were brave enough to say that if I didn't do it I would have to kiss him. Our friends knew we were both super shy, so they then later tricked us into going back to his house later where we stayed up talking all night. We were inseparable the rest of the semester. We've now made it through my semester abroad in Italy, his first year in law school 11 hours away, and my move to NYC. Hopefully we can keep going! To this day we laugh about how awkward we both were that first night, just because we knew we instantly liked each other :-)
I love reading these.
ReplyDeleteMy bf and I had hung out in a group a few times and randomly decided to go see a movie together alone (we were chatting on AIM constantly, lol). We saw "Good Night and Good Luck". Neither of us was sure it was a date cause I had driven so he'd said he'd pay... but about 20 minutes in he grabbed my hand :) We ended up back at his house (where he lived with 5 other guys), baked chocolate chip cookies, and shopped for furniture online... I knew this was a good thing. Of course now he admits that he didn't really care about the furniture, he just thought it was cute that I did. It's been just over 5 years and now that we live together I still get to bug him with online furniture shopping and am starting my own interior decorating business while he loves to cook and bake! Funny how things work out.
The night before my first big date with my boyfriend, I was so nervous that I actually made myself sick. I was with my parents at the time and when my mom came in to ask me who this "Heath Guy" was I immediately starting throwing up. (I hadn't told her about the date, didn't want to jinx it, my brother had ratted me out) So the next day I still wasn't feeling too hot and told him we would just have to reschedule. He ended up showing up at my house and helping me babysit for a family friend while I was in my sweats after being sick all day (so attractive). It was Christmas, so we ended the night by watching "A Christmas Story" and laying down on the floor in front of the Christmas tree. When I walked him out to his car afterward, we kissed in the rain. That night that began horribly started the next four years of my life. :)
ReplyDeleteI think that's one of the best parts about being with someone you truly love and that truly makes you happy - getting to look back at all those moment together!
ReplyDeleteMy first official date with my fiancee was also the day we officially started dating, I remember asking him when we were driving to dinner if he was going to ask me out already...and to this date he likes reminding me how I didn't even give him a chance to surprise me with the question. I was just excited to have him be my boyfriend already though!
I'd never thought about celebrating our anniversary as our first day anniversary too, it makes it that much more romantic! :]
Today is my wedding anniversary.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to us all :)
On my first date with my now husband, we went to a great lounge and had a few drinks. After our date, he attempted to walk me to my car. It was an attempt because I could not remember where I parked it...I promise I wasn't drunk! :) I was new to the city (DC) and got totally lost and confused. He was so sweet for spending HOURS helping me look for it. By the time we found it, I knew he was a keeper!
ReplyDeletehow sweet! i'm still looking forward to the first of many dates. although we might have been on it already an just didn't know! :))
ReplyDeletesuch a romantic story
ReplyDeleteAwwww, Happy Anniversary!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute. Reading about your first date awkwardness with trying to read each other made my heart feel all warm and fuzzy.
Hubby and I went on our first date 13 years after we met. We were best friends in college, but then I transferred. We still managed to keep in touch.
Our first unexpected date happened because we hadn't seen each other in 2 1/2 years, and I happened to be 30 minutes away from his town dropping my brother off at med school. After a flurry of texts, he decided he had to come meet up with me. He ended up surprising me and renting a limo! We went to watch Cirque Dreams followed by grabbing ice cream and eating it in the limo. Then we just sat in the hotel and talked for a few hours. As usual we felt like we were picking up where we left off... but this time it was different and we later discovered that we were both a bit nervous. :)
Love this!! My hubs and I worked together and became quick friends while he waited VERY patiently for the, ahem, stellar relationship (not so much) I was in at the time to crumble. Our first date consisted of the pretty standard dinner and a movie duo, but then he said he wanted to introduce me to some people. I thought we were meeting up with friends at a local bar, but nope. He actually took me to meet his grandparents. They helped raise him and he told me later that he knew after dinner that I was “the one” and meeting them made it official. I must have felt the same because had anyone else done that on a first date, I would’ve hit the road FAST. We’ve been together 7 years, married for 3 and are expecting a little boy this July ☺

ReplyDeleteThis post made me smile big. Such a cute story about your first date! Thanks for sharing. :)
ReplyDeletei love your story. so sweet how first dates bring even the coolest people back to middle school levels of anxiety :)
ReplyDeletei was hired at my first job (a craft studio) the same day we went on our first date. after my interview, the manager went to grab my apron and brought out a little bracelet he had made me with a note. later, he picked me up, surprising me with a chai latte in the car (surprises in the form of food are still the way to my heart.) we were both so nervous we couldn't eat, but we hung out at a small cafe and talked anyway. after that, we went to a park and played on swings, talked about marriage, and what we wanted our grandchildren to call us. :)
that was six years ago. i've been away at school for four years, but we'll be married in october. we can't wait to see each other every day.
Oh this makes me smile! Our first date: we were at a trade show for work and he missed his flight home to LA, twice... so he called me to see if I might like to have dinner with him since he had to stay an extra night too. I agreed...the rest is history.
ReplyDeleteNow we write a blog together :)
can;t wait till I have THEE 'first date'
ReplyDelete::sign::
So cute! Congratulations :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I went to dinner at an Indian food place and then went to a concert at the Provo Tabernacle in Provo, Utah. Then I avoided him for the next 7 months, because I didn't want to date him. haha Thank goodness people can change their minds!
ReplyDeleteVery sweet :) I love that you two remember so many details from the first date. Hopefully it will always stay that way.
ReplyDeleteOur 7 year first-date anniversary is coming up on April 21st. Michael took me to an Arts Festival and we ate too much food, sat under the shade of a tree, and ended up spending hours there, talking. We go back every April 21st, since it's a week long festival and do the same thing, and sit in the same spot. This year, for our 7th, we will be taking our 3 week old baby girl. Such a special moment and I can't wait to experience it in a few weeks.
so sweet :)

straight up adorable!
ReplyDeleteHappy 1st date anniverary. i'm so bad to remember anniversaries . My 1 st date sounds like yours , when you look at each other every single signs that may let you know you like each other .I was nervous but happy and I felt so diferent . We talked for hours and the restaurant owner has to put us out of the chic restaurant ...We didn't kiss that first night
ReplyDeleteNerdiest first date ever: We went to the library for a panel discussion on Graphic Novels, followed by beer and mussels at a local pub.
ReplyDeletePerfect for us. We've been married just over a year.
I love reading these!
ReplyDeleteMy husband took me to this tiny Italian take away place in Edinburgh Scotland (where we lived at the time). We knew each other very well as friends. We ate spinach and ricotta calzones. 6 years later and my nickname is still spinach gums! lol
my fiance and i started dating when we were (gasp) 15. we went to a radiohead laser show in boston. we would have had our first kiss then, too, but we both kept wimping out. haha! eight years later, we are happily planning our wedding!
ReplyDeleteAwww so cute! You may have already blogged this, but I'd love to hear the story of how y'all met.
ReplyDeleteMy sweetheart and I had our first date at my apartment--he brought over ingredients for a veggie stir fry over quinoa, a big bottle of honey porter he had brewed himself, and he brought his guitar and played some of his music for me. It was pretty much perfect. : )
We went to hit a bucket of balls at the driving range but A. his roommate didn't realize it was a date and tagged along and B. I didn't know how to golf. Awkward all around.
ReplyDeleteIt turned out alright though :)

Sorry, just saw you told the story of how you met in earlier comments!! so sweet!
ReplyDeleteI love these stories :-) My boyfriend and I started dating in high school, over 10 (!) years ago. On our first date, we went to Applebees, because that is where our "group" of friends always went so it was a safe call. We later admitted to each other we hate that place! Then we went to a book store and played checkers while we waited for the movie we wanted to see to start. At the end of the night, he drove me home, both of us full of giddy adrenaline. He blasted free falling on the radio and challenged me to belt it out solo- which I totally did. I still remember what I wore, what he wore, which lip gloss I picked, and how adorable I thought he was.
ReplyDeleteHow adorable! I love hearing these stories! My husband thinks of our first date as a night that the power went out in his building when I was over hanging out (we were just friends then) so we went over to a nearby pizza place. He says it felt like we were the only two there...and at that point had not talked about our feelings for each other so I think it's so sweet that he was nervous to be on a 'date' with me.
ReplyDeleteI like to say that my boyfriend and I had two first dates. He was my boss at the time and we had been flirty and making bets on the baseball playoff. Finally, one night he got off work and texted me, asking if I wanted to get a drink. So we went to a bar out of the way so no one would see us and we had nachos and tequila shots. We made plans to have dinner the next night and go back to my apartment to play wii and watch old episodes of SNL. I was terrified to go to work the next day because I thought he would change his mind, but he didn't and we had our first real date. We've been together for almost 2 years now and have the most adorable puppy.
ReplyDeleteHow sweet! My boyfriend and I started dating almost 6 years ago, when we were sophomores in high school. Our "dates" consisted mostly of hanging out at each others houses. I remember pretty early on into our relationship, we watched The Notebook and I remember feeling so nervous.
ReplyDeletecuteness! the lives of others is such an amazing film.

ReplyDeleteThis is too sweet. I love Cafe Cluny too. My bf and I have our first date anniversary coming up next month, actually. Ours was quite casual, but I do remember being really nervous about what to wear, what to eat, etc. The funny thing is, our first date was for drinks at a bar...and now we happen to live right across the street from that very bar!
ReplyDeletei LOVE lives of others!
ReplyDeleteWe went to a dive bar and have basically been on one long, continuous date ever since (how many other first dates can you think of that include moving in together and having a kid??) Heehee, I'm a MI girl too, but I'm from Detroit (proper) so that might explain the different pace.

ReplyDeletei loved this post! so sweet.
ReplyDeletemy first date with my fiancé was a NINE HOUR coffee date. seriously. we lost all track of time. i didn't look at my clock until we were approaching the 6 hour mark, and i almost died. it was pretty magical!
My husband and I's first date happened to be on my birthday and we decided to met for a movie and burgers.
ReplyDeleteI had spent the previous night out dancing with my girlfriends, so when I found myself in a dark cinema I promptly fell asleep! All I remember about the movie was how sweet he was because he kept propping my weary head on his shoulder.I was mortified when he woke me up once the movie had finished. Don't feel bad about the arm chair gaffe! ;)
i love this story! we debate over what our first date actually was because we grew up together and it was more of a transition than a first date!
ReplyDeletehere's our story
http://jafurness.blogspot.com/2011/03/love-story-part-four.html
Our first date was to go see the Addams Family movie. Not a typical romantic movie, but it was the best. You guys went on your first date on our tenth anniversary. Today we celebrate 14 years of marriage, and 19.25 years of being together. 22 Mar is a great date! I still feel like I'm 21 (when I met him), though we've nearly doubled in age.

i LOVE the lives of others! never really thought of it as a first date movie... i guess it would definitely help distract from those first data jitters.
ReplyDeleteah, that's so cute! i just think it's so interesting how little details like leaning away can send a message to one person, but have absolutely no meaning to the other. people are so analytical!
ReplyDeletei wish i could remember my first date with my bf. but i honestly don't. isn't that sad? i'm going to have to ask him and see if he remembers, haha!
Aww so sweet! Happy First Date Anniversary :) I definitely know what you mean about the beginning jitters. I'm going through that right now and even though it has been a month I still need to stop second guessing a lot of silly little things.
ReplyDeleteThat is great, love this! We saw The Pianist on our very first date! It was great, but for our first date? We still laugh. We were friends when Eric finally asked me out on a proper date. He says he was afraid of falling into the "friend zone." I had the biggest crush on him so I was more than happy to oblige:) Thought you might like this funny/embarrassing story I shared on my blog about a year ago about when Eric was just my crush. Enjoy. http://bit.ly/gg6kdx
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, you two are so adorable. I think this is the week of anniversaries, my parents are celebrating their twentieth wedding anniversary tomorrow! Again, happy anniversary, and here's to many, many more years of Joanna and Alex (and good news that you'v both forgiven one another for the armrest/fork incidents. How cute!:)
ReplyDeleteSweet! I had my first date with my husband 4 years ago today too! We got married 9 months later and had a beautiful little girl 2 years after that. It's amazing how fast things move when you meet the love of your life.
ReplyDeleteSo sweet! That's an amazing movie. Good first date film -so much to talk about!
ReplyDeleteAw, that is such a sweet story. I forgot how nervous people are when they are first dating; I was especially nervous on our first date because he is my first--and hopefully last--boyfriend :)
ReplyDeleteI had just moved into my new downtown apartment and was walking down the street one day when my eyes fell upon the most perfect car and I immediately had to have it...an '88 VW Fox, 2 door hatchback, sooo cool. Just happens that this most perfect car was being sold by the most perfect man; he took me for a ride & I haggled for a low price. A few days later he made a picnic of shishkabobs, salad and beers which we ate at the beach while watching the sunset...and now we have a picture of the Best Car Ever hanging on our fridge:)
ReplyDeleteAwww. It's so nice to hear a good love story. How were you guys introduced? There's definitely something to be said about when you know, you know.. And if you don't hear bells like you guys did, to move on to the next guy!
ReplyDeleteyou guys are cute! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is not my style but I'm going to respond anyway. When my husband and I met, he was visiting a mutual friend at school and we all went out to play frisbee. Well, after awhile I accidentally stepped on the frisbee and broke it. He thought this was hilarious. We got married this past New Year's Eve, just over 5 years later (I love that you feature cool weddings on your blog!) and it was a kickass way to ring in the new year! Funnest party ever. Our photographer did a great job documenting it .. you can see at www.lindseybeckwith.blogspot.com.
ReplyDeleteYAY for Michigan girls! I knew I liked you! I grew up in Ann Arbor -- one of my favorite places in the world.

ReplyDeleteJoanna, you were actually part of a “first” for me with someone I was dating in NYC. He had been to Montreal a few times to see me, but my first time visiting him was this past Hallowe’en weekend. We stopped in at Birdbath Bakery one morning, and you were standing beside us! I kind of thought you looked familiar, and then when we commented on how sweet your baby was, you turned him towards us and said, “This is Toby.” It was frankly a little surreal for me, and only once you had walked out the door with Toby did I turn to my then-beau and say, “I think that was a woman whose blog I love! I read it every day! I can’t believe I didn’t say anything!” So here's what I should have said to you that day: Hi! I'm Patricia. I'm from Montreal, I read your blog every day, I think you're such a delight, and I can't believe how funny this is that I'm standing beside you and Toby in a bakery! :)
ReplyDeletethis is so sweet! my boyfriend and I met on a temp job. a couple of us had gone out for lunch one day and I suggested that we should order one of everything and then share it. he adamantly stated he didn't like to share. we all had our own plates then. the next weekend it was just the two of us who went out to lunch, no one else wanted to join. while looking over our menus he asked if I wanted to split something with him. I told him that he had mentioned he didn't like sharing. a shy smile appeared and it hit me, this guy likes me. we ordered two entrees and shared it. we're almost three years in our relationship w/ many more to go.
ReplyDeleteMy now husband (and soon to be father of our first kids) took me on a first date to see an Austrian movie at a film festival. He is Austrian and I am Jewish and the movie was about people hunting old Nazis in present day Austria.
ReplyDeleteIt was a very good film but he spent the rest of the date at dinner horribly depressed (your countries history can really weigh on you). I guess the positive side is that it allowed us to have that conversation early on. All ended well for us.
oh my goodness, I have had one of those never-ending-long days and this just made it a bit brighter! My bf and I just got back from NYC yesterday evening Cafe Clunny was on our go-to lists but we never made it and now I'm kicking myself!
ReplyDeleteThis story is so fun cute and adorable!! thank you for sharing :) xo

My beau is actually kind of an old flame, but a previously unrequited passion. He had just returned from a couple years abroad and invited me out for a drink with other friends (also his birthday). As soon as I walked into the room and caught his eye across the room I knew I was still in deep. After hanging out under the pretense of friendship (and me watching for signs constantly) for a couple weeks thereafter he turned to me one evening and asked if he "could take me out on a real date sometime".
ReplyDeleteThe greatest magic of that first date, was not the incredible french food and wine, nor the loaded looks being given over the table... it was walking in the rain, and doing a combination of weak in the knees & jumping out of my skin every time he touched the small of my back to keep me close under his umbrella.
He got a kiss that night ... and many more since.
Love it! My stomach just did a nervous flip thinking about it. Four years ago, my hubby took me to a sushi bar in Dubai, but the table they'd reserved for us was at the bar... very impersonal and unromantic. Everything was very awkward until we had an Are-you-thinking-what-I'm-thinking? moment. We ended up at a lovely Thai spot round the corner. I was so nervous I drank too much wine and talked too fast. I still remember him putting his arm around me as we left the restaurant. Very sweet. We've been married for two years now and have a beautiful 8-month-old :-)
ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet story! My husband met me on campus and we walked around the art museum, then ended up at my studio where we sat really close on the couch while I showed him some of my photos and art as we talked.
ReplyDeletep.s. Thanks for reminding me of that film. So good!
