God of Love

Yahoo!!! Our friend Luke Matheny's short film God of Love won an Oscar last night! (Well, he's actually a friend of a friend; but we've met him at parties:) I almost fell off the sofa when he got to go up on stage and accept his award.

God of Love is an amazing 18-minute comedy about a lounge-singing darts champ who receives a mysterious package of passion-inducing darts. Here's the trailer, below; you can download the full film (for $2!) on iTunes or watch it on the big screen at this New York theatre. Huge congratulations, Luke!

  1. He had the best acceptance speech!!! Even though most people probably hadn't heard of his film - he was super memorable (joking about getting a hair cut, talking about his state [Delaware] & his school [NYU]). The sweetest part was when he thanked his composer! aww :)

  10. I saw this film on Friday night and loved it! The indie artsy movie theater in DC always plays the 5 Oscar-nominated short films as one movie the weekend of the Oscars. So my boyfriend and I got tickets and watched all five nominated films in a row as a little date on Friday. It was hilarious because my boyfriend looks EXACTLY like Luke and so afterwards, people were coming up to him as we left the movie saying "ah, the God of love himself." Haha they are like deadringers for each other, wild hair and all. I loved how he said he should have cut his hair in his speech. The actress who played his love interest in the movie was adorable too...don't know if you saw the other nominated shorts but they were so amazing too. The Confession + The Crush were my faves, other than God of Love. You should see them-- I think you'd really like The Crush. Yay for your friend's win : )

  12. Fabulous speech for sure. I wonder if NYU or Delaware will be using that clip?? :)

I clicked on the video of him finding out he was nominated as well, touching to see someone in that moment one of their dreams is possibly coming true.

  13. So wonderful! I saw his short (along with the other nominees at IFC center this past week) and I thought it was so adorable, but I was almost sure the Rwanda film was going to take the Oscar. That was such a nice Oscar surprise moment, his acceptance speech was adorable, especially when he thanked his mom for providing the craft service on set, haha ;)

  44. I was SO glad he won! I work in the film industry and at times have become a bit jaded, as you do. However, there are times when I see a great short film that reminds me of why I wanted to get into this industry in the first place, and this film was one of those. Adorable. He also had my favorite acceptance speech of the entire evening. Yay!
