Pregnant in Paris
This weekend, my mom dug out a bunch of old photos from when she was pregnant with Lucy and me. They were so much fun to see. My parents had just moved from the U.S. to France, and they thought they were having just one baby (they didn't expect twins!). My mom described what the experience was like...
"When we moved to Paris, I was already pregnant and very excited," my mom told me. "We went to French restaurants every night and explored Paris and surrounding towns on the weekends. During the day while Dad worked, I would walk through Le Vésinet, a beautiful residential district, to St. Germain en Laye, where I would have tea and a croissant and write letters home. Some days I would go swimming at a public indoor pool on the way back. I had a fitted black maternity suit--very sexy and French! Once on the way home, I was craving a hamburger, so I stopped for lunch. It was delicious. As I left the cafe, I saw a poster with an outline of a horse, saying that the special of the day was hamburger a la cheval!"
"During my pregnancy, Daddy and I called the baby 'Freddie' and whenever we visited a gorgeous French cathedral--Notre Dame, Chartres--we would always light a candle for 'Freddie.' "
"In early January, I was eight months pregnant. My belly was quite big, and my doctor was worried that something might be wrong. Dad was on a business trip, so I went alone to the Hôpital Américain de Paris for a sonogram...
"I was lying on my back with the cold jelly on my belly and the technician said, 'Je vois un bébé.' I smiled, and he kept working. Then he said, 'Ooh la la! Je vois deux bébés.' I was stunned! Twins! He kept working and then he exclaimed, 'Mon dieu, je vois trois bébés!' Triplets! He was a bit flustered and wanted a second opinion so said he was going to get a doctor and left the room. I lay there thinking, 'Hmm. I only have two arms, but I am going to have three babies!' When the two doctors came back, they took another look and finally said, 'Madame, you are definitely having two babies only!' I thought, 'Only two! That'll be a cinch!' Later I wondered if they had worked some clever psychology on me..."
"When I left the hospital that afternoon, I was so excited. I passed a little shop and spotted this cute mouse doll with two mouse babies! I bought it, and when I met Dad at the airport the next day, I gave it to him. He was perplexed and just looked at it (Why was I giving him a stuffed mouse?). Then it dawned on him, 'Oh my gosh! Are you serious?' He was shocked but thrilled. The next week we lit candles at a church for 'the Freddies!' "
(Next I'd love to share a few from after we were born, if you'd like to see...:)

What a fantastic story. Thanks for sharing. It brightened my Monday.
Those pictures are beautiful! It is so fun to see pictures of your parents when they were young and to hear stories about them. It's one of my favorite things. How fun to be pregnant in such a beautiful city!
The mouse doll is adorable! What a great read.
Oh, and actually with my first pregnancy, I went in to the dr's office for my second visit. The nurse said "and you're having twins, right?" And I said "I AM!?????" Turns out she read the chart wrong - there was only one kid in there.
Your mom is such a gorgeous woman!! Love those photos!
I loved that story! It is fueling my desire to run off to France even more!

this is just about the sweetest thing in the world. what a wonderful way to mark your birthday. happy birthday to you and lucy!! make sure to snap some photos to show toby when he's older!! i wonder if he laugh at the "style" of our time. Though to be honest I think the 00's and the 10's (is that what we're calling this decade) have a wealth of great fashion, but I guess they said that in the 80s too!
Love the mouse and those adorable little sneaks! Happy birthday!
I love you mum pic laying on the floor. well, all pics are sweet and nice.

What a sweet story, I can't wait to hear more! Happy Birthday Joanna!
Oh, one more thing, were you and Lucy ever called "the Freddies" after birth as a sort of nickname?
Love the pictures and the story. What an adorable story.
"Freddie's" how cute is that!?
Can't wait to hear the rest of the story! Thanks for sharing!
What a beautiful story with lovely, telling details. Happy birthday to you both.
this post was absolutely delightful, thanks for putting a smile on my face
Happy Birthday Joanna and Lucy!
your mom was smokin hot. (and is still very pretty.)
This is such a lovely pregnancy story. I love the little mouse doll with the twins. I think moms always remember the first things they buy for their baby/babies to be. I bought my daughter a porcelain fawn head for her nursery wall. My good friend laughed at me because I didn't have crib or a carrier or anything practical. She still makes fun of me but I love the little deer who looks over my little dear.
what beautiful stories and photos to start my day. thank you.
That is so sweet! And happy birthday, Joanna--your blog has been such a gift and I still miss your posts on Smitten.
un beau missive. veuillez davantage.

I would love to see some from after you were born!
I loved this story!!! Haha... and at least your parents picked a normal "pregnancy name" for you guys. My cousin had a baby last year, and up until she was born, we all insisted on calling the baby "Brutus." Well, everyone except my cousin, who was not at all amused. ;-)
Love the story! "The Freddies!" How Cute!
This is such a sweet story. Thank you for sharing it with us. You've left me with a big smile for the rest of the day.

How lucky are you and your sister to have a story like that from your mother.. it's so special.
this was so heartwarming, what a wonderful story about how you two were found out! That mouse doll is adorable, too, such a sweet way to tell the papa. I would love to see the next set of photos, I always love seeing pictures of my own mother before I was born!
i've always had this dream. when i am pregnant with my first child, i'd love to spend a few months (ideally in the summer... if i had it my way!) to gallivant in france with my two sisters in either arm. we'd shop for bebe-to-be and eat a ridiculous amount of sorbet and skip through jardin du luxembourg. hey, you never know!
i love this story. so sweet. happiest birthday wishes to you! xo
i love your mom's story! more pictures please!
These pictures are great!! i love looking at old pictures of my parents!! i would love to read about you growing up!

I love that you shared this! My twin sister and I just turned 39 and my mom had no idea she was having twins either! She was told all along that she was pregnant with one big baby boy! It wasn't until the delivery when they announced there were two babies. My sister and I were baby A and baby B for days. My parents never even thought of girl names, let alone two of them!
We just celebrated the 2nd birthday of my twin girls. I recently went through our pictures as well, and although my pregnancy wasn't nearly as glamourous as your moms(!), these photo's and stories remind me a lot of what I was feeling, 2 and a half years ago. Thank you for sharing!

This is so sweet! Weirdly, when my mom was pregnant with my twin sister and I, she had a feeling she was having twins. She said she went in for the ultrasound and already had the conversation played out in her head of how the doctor was going to tell her! Happy birthday to you and your sister :)
What absolutely gorgeous photos. I especially love the second shot. It looks like it should be in a 1970s Harpers Bazaar! Your mum's outfit is how I'd like to dress now...
that is so beautiful and so cute! i hope she still has the mouse!
What fabulous pictures - your mom is glowing, and absolutely beautiful! Such a great post - thank you for sharing!

Such an incredible story! She tells it so beautifully. What a treat to hear!
Jo, My wishes for a wonderful birthday to you and Lucy! I share the same birthday with you, as do several of my friends. I have enjoyed reading your blog and have introduced you to my daughter as well. It is one way we stay in touch while she is away at university. Wishing you special moments to cherish today and every day.

What gorgeous pictures!
My mom had a similar experience when she was pregnant with my sister and me. Three weeks before her due date, she had an x-ray (it's crazy they did x-rays in the 70's) to determine why she was measuring so big. Low and behold, she was carrying twins. I guess that was much more common back before regular sonograms became the norm.
Isn't being a twin wonderful!?
Happy Birthday to you and your sister! Wishing you a lovely day! Such a beautiful story- thank you for sharing!
Great posting!
What an adorable story...oh to be pregnant in France!
I loved this story and all of the super cute pictures! Please, please more! And happy birthday!!! :)

so sweet...your mom is beautiful and that is a rad story to have in any country, let alone in the romance of paris.
a lovely, lovely story. I, too, have a twin sister. My mom once told me that on the day she found out there were two babies she cried and cried and cried. My dad came home that day with a dozen red roses for her.
I might adopt your story instead.
does you mom still have the mouse?
What a delightful post!
the same thing happened with my mother... she was 7 mos pregnant with my sister and I and they didnt think the baby was developing properly. My parents were so young and living in a small town in Indiana. The doctor gave her an x-ray!!!! can you imagine?
Love this post!
i like your pictures :)

Your mother is so beautiful and French looking! I love these photos and what a beautiful story. I'm up for the next round of photographs!

Oh wow what a wonderful story - I love the mouse! I can see why 2 babies would be a relief after thinking she was having three. That was some clever doctor psychology!
OMG! My mum bought the same mouse before I was born and it's been one of my favourite toys when I was a baby!! It still "lives" at my parents home in Barcelona (although the baby mice are gone and one ear is missing).
Every time we visit my mother my little daughter loves to play with it. Next time I go there will take a pic and send it to you :-)
Beautiful story!! Lucky girls and your mama is gorgeous
