Have a sweet weekend.

My dears, what are you up to this weekend? My dad is coming to visit, and I'm soooo excited to hang out with him. He seems so debonaire that it feels odd to refer to him as "Grandpa," so we're trying to think of an alternative name for Toby to call him. What did you call your grandpa? Anyway, have a wonderful weekend, and here are a few fun links from around the web...

They had the ultrasound technician write on a card what the baby's gender was, then took the card to a cake shop and asked the cake decorators to color the inside of the cake pink if it's a girl and blue for a boy. Then they threw a huge party with their family and cut into the cake together. It was such a cute idea to let everyone else in on the fun!

  148. My Mother was 35 and my Dad was 37 when they became grandparents. My mom is swedish so she was called Mor Mor, (translates to Grandma) and my Dads name came from some jimmy stewart movie where he was called Boompa...they altered it a little and my dad became Boompie (So he sounded like a clown) I don't suggest this though. LOL

  151. Poppop, Poppi, and Gampa are some of my favorites that my family doesn't use. My mom's side is Italian so we have Nonnu (affectionate version of Nonno for Grandpa...which I thought sounded pretty fancy!) used for my great-granddad, and Grandad for my non-italian grandfather on that side. Nonnie (or Nonna) for my grandmother.

  152. Hey Joanna,
I love the photos of the statues at the Met and the blue wish list! Here's another artist who works with bubblegum, his name is Jason Kronenwald and all pieces are made out of chewed gum. Hope you like it! http://le-gallery.ca/artists/6/jason+kronenwald/

and here's my art, which you may also like :) http://le-gallery.ca/artists/5/genevieve+jodouin/

    take care

  157. We called my grandpa Papa. And my niece calls our dad Bear. So sweet to come up with a name that sums the man up more than grandpa.

  158. That picture is too funny, yesterday during the Jets/Steelers game I said "I bet Kevin Arnold wouldn't be happy", and everyone just looked at me, until I said you know, he always wore that Jets jacket. Haha.

  159. First of all, GREAT pic. It just transported me to 5th grade and now I feel warm and fuzzy inside :) Second, we called my grandfather "Dziadziu" (pronounced JaJu)... it's grandpa in Polish and now my own father is a Dziadziu to my niece and nephew! Hope you find a fun name for your Dad!

  160. Hope you had a WONDERFUL weekend with "Grandpa!" I called my paternal grandfather, Papa ("paw-paw") and my maternal grandfather, PopPop. (They were 2 extraordinary men and I miss them both terribly.)

    What name did you decide?
    Opa? Poppi? Nonno?

My cousins and I all called my grandfather "Grumps" or "Grumpsie"! I think my oldest cousin came up with it when she was little and it stuck.

    ReplyDelete
  164. I started calling my grandfather Boompa and it stuck!

late to add to the list, but unique nonetheless...

I am not a fan of Grandpa or Grandma, I hope my (whenever) little one comes up with a more creative name for my parents...

  165. Love the baby-gender-revealing idea! We spent Christmas in Chicago with my husband's family and got everyone onesies that said, "the spoiling begins in 9 months." It was SO fun seeing their reaction!!

  166. i like "gramps" and "poppy"

...when i'm a grandma, i want to be called "glammy" for glamorous grandma :)

  167. I heard a report on NPR about baby boomers eschewing "Grandma" and "Grandpa" in favor of hipper monikers. My parents and in-laws are guilty too. My parents are "Bunny and Chuka" and my in laws have chosen the traditional Hebrew "Bubbe and Zayde". The aunts and uncles are on board too, we have a Cookie and a Zio!

  168. On my dad's - very German side - instead of a grandpa and grandma I have a Papa and Nana.

I've always loved the sound of those words.

  172. We called my gandpa on my dad's side Pa, and on my mum's side Grandad

  173. my grandparents were papa and ganga and grandbobbie and granddaddy... my boyfriend calls his grandparents precious and big daddy - - and their names fit them absolutely perfectly :)

  174. Hi Joanna!
My grandfather on my dad's side was Poppa. When my dad became a grandfather, it just didn't seem right to also call him Poppa. Instead, he just became "Chief". It suits him.
My mom is Nanu, which is a hilarious, bastardized version of the Italian "Nonna". We're not even Italian! :) You just gotta go with what sticks.

  175. in french I call him Papou

    ReplyDelete
  176. Hi Joanna,
I'm French and my father chose to be called by my baby girl : Papinou (usually grandpa is called Papi here).
She's only 5 months old... will see if she agrees !

  177. My grandpa's name was Luis..so I grew up calling him Papá Luis. My parents were Mami and Papi so as a kid there was no confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  178. My little boy calls both his Grandads 'Pappy' as he couldn't say anything more and it's stuck. We love it and so do they!
ps. The Wonder Years rocks and I only discovered it at age 30 on repeat (I grew up without a tv)!

  179. I was going to comment on the gender-finding-out method initially, but got distracted with all the grandparent names! As far as fetuses go, my friends did a similar thing, but had a cake baked with color-coded icing and had a party with local friends and far-away family on Skype. It was SO fun.

My grandfathers are Papa and Pop. Does your dad have something he'd like to be called?

  180. Skipper, he was the captain of the sailboat we raced and after hearing everyone on the boat call him that all of us little ones decided to follow suit. It's actually pretty cute because all of our friends - even my mom's friends - now call him that! We also have a Grandpoo and we call our grandma nana. And my mom is now going by GiGi instead of grandma because she didn't want to be left out of the fun!
