She's about to start chemotherapy, and he asked if I could recommend pretty headwear for when she loses her hair. I suggested these turbans from etsy. My fiance had stage IV throat cancer. He was so cold when he was taking chemo and radiation he had to wear a beanie all the time, even to bed. Cancer sucks!!!

ReplyDeleteWhen my mother was going through Chemo for breast cancer, she wore her mother's, my grandmother's, vintage silk scarves. She said it made her feel like her mother was there taking care of her during treatment. At the time, my grandmother was 93 years old.
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend's mother was fighting cancer this past summer for the third time. It also happened to be the summer of her daughter's wedding so she invested in a few wigs (she associated them with different moods, fiesty, elegant, etc.). She loved them so much that she still wears them even though her hair has grown back and covers her head. Wigs are more natural looking these days, and can be a great option. But I love those turbans too! Best wishes to the couple during a difficult time.

My mother passed away from breast cancer when I was fourteen. One of the most treasured items in my closet is the black silky turban she wore during treatment. It holds so much more meaning than just a fashionable on-trend turban. I wear it with such confidence and can feel her presence every time I put it on.

O what a lovely idea!!! I really love the first one! I remember when my aunt was going through her cemo she wore bandannas all the time at home. She always wore wigs and NO ONE knew that she was even going through cemo or had breast cancer. It was amazing how many compliments she got on her hair. Then after the cemo she kept her hair short and wore the bandannas as handbands lol.

Those are gorgeous!! I wish that sort of thing was acceptable for men, my dad could have used more than his (hated) tilley hat and his (beloved) cowboy hat. His initial solution was to shave it all off preemptively and go for a frankenstein-buddha look after surgery, but due to all the radiation beamed into his head he couldn't keep it uncovered in sunlight. Shame too, he made for a very jolly buddha when he started gaining weight again.

ReplyDeleteWhen I lost my hair to chemo at age 20 (and in the winter no less) I found that the absolute best thing for a cold and sensitive scalp was a fleece beanie (they have them at Old Navy right now). With knit caps, the wind whips right through the holes and even the softest yarn can feel scratchy. They also stay on cozy and tight. I just gifted two to a girlfriend who just lost her hair to leukemia, and she echoed all the benefits of the fleece cap.
ReplyDeletecute hand knit beanies are always an idea. chemo makes skin very sensitive, so wearing something hand knit with a very soft yarn is helpful, like baby cotton (which is really super soft and washable)

ReplyDeleteMy mom went through chemo, and the thing she wanted most was for my dad to shave his head so she could have someone to be bald with. He might want to think about doing that to show his support! And I'm sure he would do this anyway, but it's so important for him to still hug her and hold her hand and tell her she's still beautiful. Those things could help more than anything.

When my mom had breast cancer, she lost her hair and had a very natural-looking wig (Elizabeth was right about the quality being so improved!). However, she also loved to wear a cozy and colorful knit cap. She would wear it both over her wig and sometimes just on her bare head around the house or out in public. It was adorable. When my mom had cancer last year we went to thrift stores together and picked out lots of colourful scarves with fun prints for her to wear while she was going to chemo. A lot of the companies that sell head coverings specifically for cancer patients charge a lot of money, which doesn't seem right to me. This way my mom and I got to spend a fun day together without putting a big dent in our wallets, plus it is also a more eco-friendly approach. :)
ReplyDeleteFor winter time, I echo those who talked about the fleece beanies. Also these turbans are great. Anything velvety & warm is good. Silk scarves are for later, usually. Though, they have to be prepared, if she's not gone through menopause, she will no matter her age. So, some things that are warm but that have a wick to them might be necessary.

THANK YOU for this post. My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in February and for the past eleven months has undergone chemotherapy and radiation. She finished her last treatment the day before Thanksgiving (we had a lot to be thankful for) and is now officially cancer free.

Even though I invested in an expensive wig that looked like my own shoulder length hair, the best thing I had was an inexpensive synthetic half wig for wearing with hats. It was shoulder length but there was no hair across the crown. Wearing hats, berets, turbans and the like was better, for me, with the half wig on because I maintained the illusion I had hair in a more natural way than even the wig did. It was so convincing, my neighbour across the street never figured out I was a cueball (or that I was fighting breast cancer)! I was able to look like, well, like me.
I am almost tempted to wear it still - my hair is so short that if I wear a hat of any kind I still look like I'm going through chemo.
