The other day, I got a sweet and touching email from a man whose wife was just diagnosed with breast cancer. She's about to start chemotherapy, and he asked if I could recommend pretty headwear for when she loses her hair. I suggested these turbans from etsy. I think she'll look beautiful in them.Any other ideas for her, my darlings? xoxo

So pretty, and such a great idea. I think a felted fedora, or floppy brimed hat in great too!
ReplyDeleteOh, those are lovely! I especially like the second velvety one. I know some people wear headscarves, but it might be too cold for that now. Please send my love for the man and his wife!

What a sweet husband and I am so sorry for her. I think those will be perfect. Also, she could use those amazing sky scarves you posted about yesterday.
ReplyDeleteKisses and sending good wishes...
My fiance had stage IV throat cancer. He was so cold when he was taking chemo and radiation he had to wear a beanie all the time, even to bed. Cancer sucks!!!
ReplyDeleteIf it were me...this is the one that I would get...without a doubt...

I suggest he googles Kylie Minogue as she wore some fabulous things during her therapy.
ReplyDeletegood suggestion and awesome of you to respond to his e-mail!
ReplyDeletehow sweet of you!
ReplyDeleteWhen my mother was going through Chemo for breast cancer, she wore her mother's, my grandmother's, vintage silk scarves. She said it made her feel like her mother was there taking care of her during treatment. At the time, my grandmother was 93 years old.
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend's mother was fighting cancer this past summer for the third time. It also happened to be the summer of her daughter's wedding so she invested in a few wigs (she associated them with different moods, fiesty, elegant, etc.). She loved them so much that she still wears them even though her hair has grown back and covers her head. Wigs are more natural looking these days, and can be a great option. But I love those turbans too! Best wishes to the couple during a difficult time.
ReplyDeletemaybe silk scarves? if she wants to go all out, hermes would be fabulous ;) and would be a touch of glamour at a rough time. and she could layer lovely little woolen hats on top if she is cold :)
ReplyDeleteif i wasn't a student, i'd love to send her a care package of hermes scarves!!
i will be thinking of this family and keeping them in my prayers ♥
My mother passed away from breast cancer when I was fourteen. One of the most treasured items in my closet is the black silky turban she wore during treatment. It holds so much more meaning than just a fashionable on-trend turban. I wear it with such confidence and can feel her presence every time I put it on.

O what a lovely idea!!! I really love the first one! I remember when my aunt was going through her cemo she wore bandannas all the time at home. She always wore wigs and NO ONE knew that she was even going through cemo or had breast cancer. It was amazing how many compliments she got on her hair. Then after the cemo she kept her hair short and wore the bandannas as handbands lol.
ReplyDeleteI will def. keep his wife in my prayers.

Those are gorgeous!! I wish that sort of thing was acceptable for men, my dad could have used more than his (hated) tilley hat and his (beloved) cowboy hat. His initial solution was to shave it all off preemptively and go for a frankenstein-buddha look after surgery, but due to all the radiation beamed into his head he couldn't keep it uncovered in sunlight. Shame too, he made for a very jolly buddha when he started gaining weight again.
ReplyDeleteAll the best for that gentleman's wife, it's beyond tough for everyone but it certainly gives you a fresh perspective.
Turbans are so stylish! I wish all the best for the man who e-mailed you and his wife.
ReplyDeleteThis is so sweet. I just saw this one which is cute http://www.etsy.com/listing/63816231/brownblack-wool-hat?ref=v1_other_2
ReplyDeletei totally have a thing for turbans -i wanna try one and see if my enourmous face looks ok in one :o)

How about a feature where we can learn how to tie and turban, she could use those gorgeous sky scarves!

That's such a sweet thing for him to look into for her. I completely agree, I think these turbans would look wonderful.
ReplyDeletewhen my mom was going through chemo she loved wearing long scarfs that she could tie like a ponytail or wrap around her head in fun ways. also cotton beanies with flowers on them :)
ReplyDeleteThese turbans are lovely! My aunt loved wearing berets during her fight with cancer.
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful.. I love scarves with bright and vibrant patterns.
ReplyDeleteThose are wonderful! My friend that had cancer would wear a variety of wigs, scarfs and turbans. Sending warm hugs to this very sweet man and his wife! xxoo :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I lost my hair to chemo at age 20 (and in the winter no less) I found that the absolute best thing for a cold and sensitive scalp was a fleece beanie (they have them at Old Navy right now). With knit caps, the wind whips right through the holes and even the softest yarn can feel scratchy. They also stay on cozy and tight. I just gifted two to a girlfriend who just lost her hair to leukemia, and she echoed all the benefits of the fleece cap.
ReplyDeletecute hand knit beanies are always an idea. chemo makes skin very sensitive, so wearing something hand knit with a very soft yarn is helpful, like baby cotton (which is really super soft and washable)
ReplyDeleteI love the first one!
ReplyDeleteMore suggestions in here:

So lovely! I think the turbans are the perfect idea...
ReplyDeletethese are absolutely beautiful! sounds like she's got herself quite a good hubby. best of luck to both of them!
ReplyDeleteMy mom went through chemo, and the thing she wanted most was for my dad to shave his head so she could have someone to be bald with. He might want to think about doing that to show his support! And I'm sure he would do this anyway, but it's so important for him to still hug her and hold her hand and tell her she's still beautiful. Those things could help more than anything.
ReplyDeleteI think a big floppy hat like this would be awesome:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.zappos.com/jessica-simpson-jh102926-decadent-chocolate
If it's itchy maybe she could wear one of the performance fleece beanies underneath!
this made my heart melt. so sweet of him and so sweet of you
ReplyDeleteCOLD CAPS! she may be able to keep her hair if she can afford this (not covered by insurance I hear):
ReplyDeletehttp://www.msc-worldwide.com/indexusa.html
such a great suggestion!
ReplyDeleteI read the other comments, and it sounds like certain fabrics might be irritating to her skin--what about a plain fleece cap or soft scarf with a pretty brooch to make it more fashionable?
ReplyDeleteSomething like this might be nice:
http://www.etsy.com/listing/63829956/meadow-flower-in-blue-spruce-felt-pin?ref=tre-4cff866854b58eef771139e7-5
Or one of those flower pins from Emersonmade!
I recently complimented a stranger on her cute pixie haircut. She was surprised but thanked me and said that it wasn't a choice. She had come through chemo and looked beautiful and healthy.
ReplyDeleteLUCK! HEALTH! BEAUTY! XOXOXO!
When my mom had breast cancer, she lost her hair and had a very natural-looking wig (Elizabeth was right about the quality being so improved!). However, she also loved to wear a cozy and colorful knit cap. She would wear it both over her wig and sometimes just on her bare head around the house or out in public. It was adorable. Here's a similar link with different styles (and you can volunteer to help make the caps here!) http://www.headhuggers.org/.
ReplyDeletep.s. My mom's best friend also made a soft flannel pillowcase for her during treatment b/c typical linen covers would aggrevate her skin. Just another incredible thoughtful gesture he could do to help his wife (since he seems like a fantastic husband anyway!)
What a wonderful husband!
ReplyDeleteI'd suggest a few adorable vintage hats, you can find quite a few if you search on Etsy under "vintage cloche" or even the handmade ones. They (and those turbans) will still be perfect to wear when it starts to grow back into an adorable Jean Seberg style pixie.
Loja de Estar also has a few cute turbans, made from a 1960's pattern:
ReplyDeletehttp://lojadestar.myshopify.com/collections/coisas-de-raparigas/products/turbante-turban
These are pretty! My mother battled against leukemia in 2009, and I bet she would have liked these. During her chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant she wore these extremely soft, cute hats from Just In Time:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.softhats.com/
She also embraced the bald though!
I wish this sweet husband and his wife all the best! Its a really rough process but I'm glad they seem strong and together!
I love the turban idea! Here is another Etsy shop with some beautiful options:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.etsy.com/shop/LunaSolis?ref=seller_info
Such a sweet idea! ♥
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking those would be cool and a simple beanie would be good for every day use, especially since it's winter. I love that her husband emailed you for help :) So sweet.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.etsy.com/shop/thestyleunderground?ref=seller_info
ReplyDeleteThis etsy shop might be a good place to find some scarves too :)
My mother and her friends started a head wrap company for women dealing with cancer and other hair loss - they have many options for women and pretty fabrics. They are all handmade in Michigan:-)
ReplyDeletewww.alwaysbeautifulyou.com
When my mom had cancer last year we went to thrift stores together and picked out lots of colourful scarves with fun prints for her to wear while she was going to chemo. A lot of the companies that sell head coverings specifically for cancer patients charge a lot of money, which doesn't seem right to me. This way my mom and I got to spend a fun day together without putting a big dent in our wallets, plus it is also a more eco-friendly approach. :)
ReplyDeleteFor winter time, I echo those who talked about the fleece beanies. Also these turbans are great. Anything velvety & warm is good. Silk scarves are for later, usually. Though, they have to be prepared, if she's not gone through menopause, she will no matter her age. So, some things that are warm but that have a wick to them might be necessary.
ReplyDeleteaww such a sweet turban. i had cancer when i was 4 and my parents totally put me in turbans and scarves all the time :)
ReplyDeletewhat a sweet request from a reader! also love the turbans. so very carrie bradshaw in satc 2!
ReplyDeletethese are such amazing comments!!!!! thank you so much!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat is so sweet!
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how a few short sentences from you can tug at so many people's heart strings. I teared up before I was even done reading. And it is also so unbelievable to read how many of us have been affected by the awful c-word disease. Such a sweet request from an adoring husband. Sending love out to the world for them both.
ReplyDeleteThese would look really bad on my head but I could so see them on my granddaughter. Sweet!
ReplyDeleteDi
What a nice thing for that husband to do for his wife! I'm happy you are helping him :)
ReplyDeleteHere's an Esty shop that sells the most gorgeous hats!!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.etsy.com/shop/yellowfield7
Hope this helps!!!
The bottom one reminds me of one a fortune teller wore in a 1930's movie (the name escapes me). Chic and vintage inspired.
ReplyDeleteHigh-fashion silk scarves (with bold prints) are a great way to cover up, and they can even cover a beanie that way the head stays toasty! Sorry I dont have any particular links, but I know J Lo is a huge fan of the trend. Best of luck!
ReplyDeletewhen i had leukemia a dear friend gave me a fake fur hat lined in fleece. it was the best fake hair ever. i also loved a crazy silk scarf, and of course a good turban!
ReplyDeleteA vintage silk scarf, tied around her head into a big, happy, "F you, cancer" bow, slightly off center. This sounds very specific, but it's something I do with the mannequins at work and it alwas looks great.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet husband!
ReplyDeleteMy suggestion would be an Israeli Tichel. I've been wearing these for years and didn't know that's what they were called (I just say head wrap with a bun :-D )
He can get them here: http://www.coveryourhair.com/israeliTichelIndex.html
They have lovely colors and designs!
I agree with beautiful silk scarves covering the head. If you have to have cancer, you may as well wear exquisite scarves-preferably French. And expensive.
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree with the fabulous f-you cancer satisfaction. The more beautiful and bold the better.
What a sweet guy! That first turban is especially adorable.
ReplyDeletei love the first...i would rock some crazy wigs...i'm already looking for an excuse to bust out a hot-pink bob...best wishes to her..and hopes for a speedy recovery.
ReplyDeletemy mama wore a nice charlie's angel's style wig, but with a soft thin cap underneath to protect from itching, she looked fabulous, but many times she would tie a long colourful scarf around here head like a glamorous turban, & sometimes with the ends of the scarf flowing down so it looked more feminine.
ReplyDeleteThese are lovely. While my mum was having chemo, she did some wonderful things with beautiful bright scarves too.

Just typing in the word turban to etsy gives you many many options.

Also--Anthropologie has some cute hats right now. I also love the bright silk scarf ideas.
heart, heart, heart to the husband and his lovely wife.
Another great hat site on etsy is www.piperandpaisley.etsy.com
ReplyDeleteI feel for his wife. I recently went through 8 months of chemotherapy and also a Stem Cell Transplant so was as bald as a babies bum (just not as cute!)
ReplyDeleteI ordered and loved the head scarves from this site http://www.4women.com
My hair is growing back now and I'm trying to rock the pixie cute as best as I can so I wanted to offer if you would put me in touch with this gentleman I could send him the head scarves that I ordered from the site. They work wonderfully and are completely washable, Ive put mine in the washing machine on the gentle cycle a few times.
Let me know if I can be of any help.

How to tie a turban using your own scarves:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.theglamourai.com/2010/10/how-to-tie-your-own-turban.html
Also, with wigs you can have a new hairstyle every week. Even go purple like Samantha on Sex and the City!
My Grandma wore a pink silk turban during her chemotherapy treatments and she always looked so regal.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet husband, all my best wishes for his wife. Here's a tutorial for a DIY turban that might be useful.
ReplyDeleteBesos!!
Oh God! I forgot to post the link:

she's gonna rock in them!i'm sure:)

Fantastic turbans! My mum's currently undergoing chemo too, so if she loses her hair I'll be recommending something similar too!
ReplyDeleteHi from Spain. My mother and my aunt wore scarves when they were through the chemotherapy. They both bought stylish wigs too. My best wishes for the wife and husband. Esther
ReplyDeleteI just found this lovely knit turban and immediately thought of your post. It would be sure to keep her warm and I think it's adorable.

Best wishes to the couple during such a hard time!
THANK YOU for this post. My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in February and for the past eleven months has undergone chemotherapy and radiation. She finished her last treatment the day before Thanksgiving (we had a lot to be thankful for) and is now officially cancer free.
ReplyDeleteShe lost her hair during chemo and though she looks amazing with her new pixie do, she'll often complain of how cold her head gets. One of these turbans will prove the perfect stocking stuffer and keep her head warm (and chic) this season! Thanks so much. xo
Great & super sweet suggestion - after taking a closer look I realized the model is my friend Carmen. Small world!
ReplyDeleteWow. So touching. Just the other night, I saw a lady at dinner party with this really rad headwrap, and thought is was just so chic. Later, my mom told me she had breast cancer, and was undergoing chemo...these are such a perfect alternative in the winter. Good choice!
ReplyDeletexoxo
That is a lovely gesture.
ReplyDeleteI went through chemo last year. Even though I invested in an expensive wig that looked like my own shoulder length hair, the best thing I had was an inexpensive synthetic half wig for wearing with hats. It was shoulder length but there was no hair across the crown. Wearing hats, berets, turbans and the like was better, for me, with the half wig on because I maintained the illusion I had hair in a more natural way than even the wig did. It was so convincing, my neighbour across the street never figured out I was a cueball (or that I was fighting breast cancer)! I was able to look like, well, like me.
I am almost tempted to wear it still - my hair is so short that if I wear a hat of any kind I still look like I'm going through chemo.
This is so sweet! I really like these.
ReplyDeleteYou probably won't get to this post, but I was really touched by the fact that someone's husband contacted you for help for his wife. I saw this and thought of it again: http://www.eric-bompard.com/index.v2.php? A terrific French label selling a sort of cashmere turban. Otherwise a silk scarf Jackie O' style. Of course, Hermès ain't so shabby.
ReplyDeleteWhat a thoughtful and sweet husband! His wife has something to be thankful for despite being thrown into such an awful situation. I think these turbans are beautiful--great choice. And I would add those sky scarves as a suggestion, as well. My love and best wishes to both of them:)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fella. The fact that he even KNOWS about Cuppa Jo is one thing, but he emailed you axing for ideas? Swoon. Here's hoping they get through the tough times ahead with grace and style.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing a nice article.
