My Dog Tulip

Have you seen this trailer? My Dog Tulip is a sixty-minute animated film about a curmudgeonly English man and his surprising friendship with a German Shepherd. I can't decide if it looks boring or not (is there an actual plot?), but the animation is beautiful.

Anything with a dog is a must-see!!

The jury is still out for me too! But I'm with you on the animation

Something about the animation style makes me feel very nostalgic, but I'm wondering if the 2 minute trailer was all I really needed to see... My 13mo old daughter might feel differently though - she spent the whole trailer woofing at the computer screen.

I'm really excited to see it, not just because I have a dog, but because I saw how much a dog changed my Grandpop's life after my Grandmother passed. The bond between the elderly and animals is amazing!

Although without the experience, I would be a sceptic, too!

I think it's looks interesting. A story about relationships, love, and dealing with loneliness. I would watch it without a doubt! Plus as you said, the animation is beautiful.

Looks positively adorable (and makes me miss my puppy Stella Blu - clearly named after the Grateful Dead Song)!

oh my goodness... i just got all teary eyed at the trailer! whether it has an actual plot or not, i think the silly antics of that pup are enough to keep the movie entertaining the whole way through. and it looks absolutely beautiful to boot! all hail hand drawn animation!

I thought the same exact thing when I watched this trailer. Beautiful animation, but will it really be anything more than that?

With the tag line at the end "sometimes love really is a bitch" and the voice of Christopher Plummer I don't know how you could resist.

As you say, great animation, and such a nice change from the regular stuff we see around. I think it looks like a sweet film - then again, I'm biases as I'm a GS lover!

I've seen this trailer a few times and I adore it. It speaks volumes of how even the sternest of people can be won over by animal affection. Plus, my dog is a german shep-sheltie mix so I have a bit of a soft spot :)

I'm not sure if there is a plot, but I agree that the animation looks amazing and I love the Ackerley quote about how dogs are an English vessel for love...

Oh no, it doesn't look boring! Having read the marvelous book, I cannot wait to see it. So creatively done.

Growing up, I had a German Shepard that I just loved!
So, is that making me want to see this ?!
No way:)

I saw this movie at Film Forum a few weeks ago, and the animators spoke afterward, which was really cool. It's a beautiful film. Dog owners will appreciate the movie.

That looks like a lovely little film. Falling in love with the style of animation <3

Kitty said...

the animator behind this also did another short animated film called "still life with animated dogs". It is done in the same fantastic style and i can safely say that it does have a plot-- i saw it a few years ago on pbs and i was crying at the end!

This reminds me alot of my dog Lua. An absolute terror, but so uncompromisingly loving as well. I could have teared up watching it. Alright, maybe I did a little. I'll have to find out when I can watch the full length!

I don't need a "plot" per se for this sort of thing (& I'm a writer:)...If it follows the story, it will make you cry.

Giulia (the gattina) just hopped up & was quite interested in the animation & the barking. I'll definitely see it.

I forgot to say: some of us who have cats love dogs, too & would appreciate any pet/guardian story.

Hi Jo

It looks good but L'illustioniste has really really beautiful animation. I saw it recently, funnily enough in Edinburgh (where it's set) in the Cameo picture house. There's a scene set in there! It was brilliant. Here's the trailer... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPdLrxxo4mg

i love most dog films. tulip looks like my husbands childhood dog so i think we'll be watching it - but getting totally teary!

this looks adorable and so pretty. If it's just 60 minutes, it shouldn't get too boring. It looks sad.

The style kind of reminds me of a fantastic French film that came out a few years ago called Les Triplettes de Belleville. Here's the trailer:

It's lovely. Kind of declaration of love for dogs. I like very much the way it's drawn colored.

Sixty minutes couldn't hurt.

I do love the tad lag in the animation though, almost as if it's being sketched on spot!

Signs of heat stress: Profuse panting and salivation, weakness, staring or anxious expression, warm dry skin, rapid heartbeat. If any of these signs are apparent: find shade, place water-soaked bandana and/or towel on dog’s head and abdomen. Then, seek veterinary care.
