Famous mamas

Inspired by this amazing post, here are a few photos of beautiful celebrity mothers. Above, of course, is Grace Kelly...

Jackie and JFK with baby John...

Jane Birkin with Serge Gainsbourg...
And Jane and Serge again (look at tiny tomboy Charlotte Gainbourg!)...

Princess Diana and her boys...

And Mia Farrow. Aren't they all lovely?

P.S. Plus, two more gorgeous shots of Jane Birkin and Jackie Kennedy.

  1. so sweet. there's something so leveling about humans and their babies, even if the humans are super-famous. also Iris has those dungarees that Prince Harry is wearing. osh kosh. i love 'em.

  17. You didn't know that Audrey H. had two children? They run her children's foundation, made appearances on her behalf for UNICEF when she was ill. She famously retired during her less-than-happy Roman holiday (though she loved Rome). Wow, I'm so surprised that anyone is surprised...& no, I'm not THAT old.

Also, remember (or find out) that while these photos are lovely, nearly everyone in these photographs was having an absolutely hellish time of it, either in their marriages/relationships (or other major life upheaval). Seriously. Before the romanticizing gets to be too, too much.

And also, while it is your personal blog, Joanna, I can't help but notice that since you're branding & all...where is anyone of color? Nearly ever? I happen to be white but with mixed family. I recommended your blog to a friend as a place to look for cute ideas, etc. She shot back to me: that's the whitest damn blog I ever did see. I challenged her on on the "est" part but otherwise couldn't say much. I don't know if she went over to Highchair Moms or not.

Just anecdotal but it might be important.

Cheers. (& yes, lovely photographs, of course)

  20. I think one of Audrey's children might have written a book about her or continued her charity work or something? Seems like I heard that a few years back, but I totally could be making it up.

I have a picture of me and my two kids the day after the younger one was born, a la the Rita Hayworth shot. So sweet, and one of my favs despite being totally fat and bloated.

    Great post Joanna!

  21. susan, there are many women of color on the blog, if your friend had actually taken a moment to look through it!

  28. I sometimes forget how beautiful Grace Kelly was. Amazing is what she was. And Diana - my favorite. I remember being glued to the TV for the wedding, flipping thru magazines to see her and her handsome boys growing up. I was glued again to the TV when she died. She seemed so real. Like a person who you could just talk to about anything. They are rare.

  30. Would have been nice to see a more diverse group of women here.

  31. so interesting that they paired grace kelly with the madonna and child behind her, no? all together such sweet pictures. And kishorirajan - would love to see some vintage pics of famous women of other ethnicities with their babies! i'm guessing, sadly, that they aren't as easy to find b/c they wouldn't have been as widely reproduced back in the day, but am I wrong? Maybe they're a lot more easily accessible than i think. There is a blog on the visual history of breastfeeding in America that has a wonderful array of pictures... I can't remember what it's called as I lost the link, but if you search "library of congress, breastfeeding, blog" you might come upon it. In fact, I think I'll go do that myself just now.

  32. Disappointingly, I have to agree with a couple of the above commenters - while I do enjoy browsing through your blog, Joanna, I have to admit that the first thing that struck me as I looked at this post was "why is there no diversity (at all!!) among this group of women?"

Just something to consider for future posts...

Joanna--I told her that. I can't really say though that it is that diverse. I'm not asking you to make it so. I think that she's overwhelmed by so many blogs that are similar. This is not a new issue as you know. "Tell Me About it" just did a segment this aft. on the subject.

And to the echo-chamber people who think I was being mean, I was not. Goodness. Obviously, I wouldn't be here or recommend the blog if I were a mean person. This is exactly why I do not link to my blogs when I leave even a minor dissent. Whole bunches of rude folks bounce over & want me to put up my dukes. Or something. It's really quite silly. If you took 3 minutes & actually read Joanna's bio, professional website, & work you would know that she's an accomplished person who can take a "eh, I don't know about that, Joanna." That's why she is where she is...OK. Over & out. And no I'm not her mom. lol

    xoxo to that adorable Toby-bunny.

  41. Dear Susan,

I can't speak for everybody else, but I for one do not think you are a mean person - I don't know you! But if the reason you don't link to your blog is because you experience : 'Whole bunches of rude folks bounce over & want me to put up my dukes' - then maybe you should consider that the way you express yourself in your comments may not be entirely neutral. Otherwise people wouldn't react, would they?

I know of Joanna's accomplishments and I think she is so surrounded with people who love her, that I'm sure that she's not bothered by comments like this - but I for one would be sad if people wrote things like that on my blog. That's why I wanted to express my sympathy for her.

I don't think: 'You didn't know that Audrey H. had two children? They run her children's foundation, made appearances on her behalf for UNICEF when she was ill. She famously retired during her less-than-happy Roman holiday (though she loved Rome). Wow, I'm so surprised that anyone is surprised'- is a neutral statement!

So again, I'm sorry if you felt that I portrayed you as a mean person, Susan.

Just a reminder for all of us that words can be interpreted very differently from how they were intended when they are not accompanied by a person's face, intonation, tone etc...

    xo

  61. OK. One more time & then that's it. Carina--I appreciate your comment & do understand what you're saying. However, 'neutral" comments are not what make blogs lively at all. I was feeling rather put out, yes, at that moment. It however was not mean. I receive many rude comments because I run a blog associated with a human rights campaign...yes, that's right. So anytime this comes up, there are lurkers (that's what they're called, I'm not making it up) travel over to my personal blog as they can't make comments (anymore) on the human rights blog. I don't know if that makes sense but it's the best I can do right now. Almost always (99.9%) of my comments are positive & I link.

I will not be an echo-chamber for anyone. But thank you for your comment, I really do appreciate it.

When I link, my name comes up as 'Giulia.' Just for the future.
