Fall trend #3: Capes

Another fall trend is the cape. They're super chic and would be cozy on a crisp fall day. Would you wear one?

in a heartbeat if it actually was going to get cold any time soon! This would be more Christmastime wear for me. Stupid Gulf Coast.

ps. isn't that girl in the bottom picture someone famous?

yes! I have a vintage plaid wool cape that I simply *can't wait* to wear. I adore this trend :)
xx fallon

Tamara Nicole said...

Yes I would! But maybe a black or red one? OR hmmm a dark yellow? Not sure but I need color! Lol

Hope you are having a great day!

J. said...

I love capes!! I'll be wearing one this winter, I just have to find the perfect one.

Savoir Weddings said...

I just bought myself a black cape with a hood. It's awesome but quite hard to pull off. Skinny black jeans and heels is the easiest way I think. Definitely don't want to stray into Batman territory.

Joanna Goddard said...

lovely being, so fun!!

S. said...

my mother's boyfriend has one, I think they are cute ^^ I want one :)

Susie said...

Yes! I would wear one. The girl looks like she could be Sarah Jessica Parker's daughter! (If she had a daughter that age). :)

Jenna said...

Capes are so, so amazing. I got one at the end of last season and barely had time to wear it. I will be pulling it out at the first sign of a cold-spell! Love the first photo, by the way :)

I just thrifted a gorgeous dark grey cape that I'll be wearing all winter! It was a steal at $20, a good option if you don't want to drop too much dough on something "trendy"!

Cailean said...

Love it! Where did you find the second photo on The Sartorialist? I've looked at his site for years and have never seen that one, that I remember at least. Can you post the link?

Char said...

I totally would! I love the look of it! And I think it makes your outfit just be 10x as amazing!

AJ said...

Absolutely! I love capes ^_^ Maybe I'll finally make one this year :D

Susan said...

love it! oh so adorable

TERI REES WANG said...

Capes can be very cool, and ponchos too. Personally, I'd rather wrap myself up in a serape blanket. But, a hood and button could make it better.

Cheers!

Diana Mieczan said...

I totally love the first one...The buttons are so cool:)..I have a chocolate brown one that I got from my friend as a gift years ago and back then they were not in fashion ( but I wore it anyway...hahah)...I am so going to wear it this season too...
Kisses,Joanna

Ps: How about you, would you wear a cape?

esdelope said...

Love this look! Particularly in tartan plaids. I agree - that girl looks famous. Almost like a cleaned up Fiona Apple?

Absolutely! Love it!

I have a lovely old cape in a grey wool that I love and try to wear as much as possible, despite the fact that it is the most impractical thing I own! I need my hands! I tried to drive in it once – a complete disaster...

ABACAXI and HORTELĂ‚ said...

YES! I would definitely wear one! They're so stylish! But only when fall would come with the sunshine as on the pictures ;)

Joanna Goddard said...

yes, ponchos! my friend Nora used to wear this amazing black poncho, and when i'd call her to ask her what she was up to, she's say, "just poncho-ing." :)

kate said...

yes indeed!

amy anne said...

My friend bought a poncho at H&M over the weekend and while we laughed about it, I secretly wished I had snatched one up as well. Love the cape in the second picture!

caroline said...

yep! i'd wear one. i had a jcrew poncho in high school and people would make fun of me for it. but i love it!

Alyssa / A Muse A Day said...

I've been in love with the cape ever since Blair Waldorf wore hers on Gossip Girl, but I haven't gotten up the guts to buy my own yet. Maybe this year...

Fenke said...

i would most def. wear one! but only pre-pregnancy - which will be in december. and since i am afraid a cape is not warm enough for the for the berlin-winter-days, i'll probably skip this trend :-(

Lisa Golightly said...

i just bought one last week and now can't wait for the cooler weather!

Tucker said...

absolutely! just bought one.
they are fabbbb

Whimsy Being said...

This is something I can definitely get on board with =) Adding this to the fall list!

lisaroyhandbags said...

I would totally wear one! throw it on with a pair of jeans and long sleeve T and you look totally chic with no effort! :)

Olivia said...

looove!!! going to have go hunt for a cheap one!

Charlotte said...

I'm dying for a cape, but I'm afraid I'll look really conspicuous in one. I also feel conspicuous in sunglasses, so maybe it's just a me thing.

Dancing Branflake said...

I so want one! This reminds me of the 30 Rock episode where Oprah (Pam) says that one of her favorite things is sweater capes. I totally fell in love with them at that moment!

Giulia said...

Of course. Why stop? I have a few but my favorite is a red one from Italy. (I hate wearing red dresses, but this or other accessories, yes if blue-red.)

Bought in emergency of cold snap. Totally not designer...I get more "where did you buy thats" for last 16 years.

The weird thing to me? Most women seem disappointed. That it's the equivalent of, I don't know, um...like high street chains in UK. We don't have them in DC now.

I'm sorry this materialism & excessive exuberance about $ has not abated. (Well, in blogland.)

xo

Emily said...

Don't know if I could pull one off but these are super cute!

Giulia said...

I should be clear--I wasn't criticizing cape wearers or Joanna:)

Katie said...

how is it that super tiny models can wear this and look amazing but when i put one on i look like im swimming in fabric? of course...it doesn't stop me! ;)

Juliana from NC said...

yes, without a doubt... I just inherited a cape my grandmother made and I plan to wear it this fall... it's blue and orange plaid with satin lining so you'll see me coming.

Absolutely! That first one is gorgeous, I would love to run around in it all through the fall, and perhaps with long gloves even into the winter.

Yes, they're soooo much fun to wear.

Yes, now this fall trend I would wear. Very classy!

amy said...

Yes, I'd absolutely wear one! In fact, I DID wear one in a shoot for my husband this past winter.
It's my mom's and she wouldn't let me steal it from her, because her best friend made it for a college fashion design class! So cool.

Melissa Blake said...

Awww, this post reminds me of my dad. Before he died, he always wore a poncho. He had a bright yellow one!

My grandmother was kind enough to give me a beautiful irish wool plaid cape purchased in Ireland back in the late 60s it's stunning, I have been wearing it for 2 yrs and have never gotten so many compliments on one article of clothing, people legitimately stop me on the street to ask about it. Last year a couple of the original navy buttons started to get loose from years or wear, so I went to MJ Trimming on 6th Ave and got some beautiful gold buttons, I cannot wait for it to get cold enough to wear it again!!

stephanie said...

ahhhh i LOVE the cape!! i would definitely wear one...i'm not sure who the girl is but she looks fab.

I have a fantastic green and blue plaid vintage cape that I sadly cannot wear as it is too slim through the shoulders. But I would totally wear it if I could!

I have a wool poncho, it's itchy as hell, but I love that thing. If I cut some arm holes in the front can I call it a cape?

carina said...

I have one and wear it all the time. My students always laugh and say I REALLY look like a teacher when I wear it. It's amazing - perfect for season transitions.

Poor Fish Girl said...

Such a great look! I'm luck enough to have inherited 2 from the early 60's made of camel hair. They belonged to my mom, fortunatly she had amazing taste. I also inherited a set of Pringle of Scotland cashmere cardigans, and a killer aligator skin handbag.

Rachel said...

Ohhh I love them! The first one is gorgeous x

K said...

Are you kidding I bought one a couple years ago.

Nicola said...

I would definitely wear a cape. they are so chic but also so practical. I love them with long leather gloves too. Get your capes on ladies!!

i think these girls look gorgeous in their capes! almost enough to tempt me into wanting one although it's so cold around here i'd probably want sleeves, too :)

Liz said...

Anyone have any idea who makes the first cape pictured? I love that one.

Ouuuu you've read my mind! I totally want a cape too!!!
If I can't find one, I'll have to make one myself :)

This is random, but I was perusing a Teen Vogue at the doctor's office today and that second photo was in there attached to a scandalous story about how those two teens tried to sneak into Fashion Week. Wild!

She sure can put a cute outfit together though!

I bought a suede cape from a vintage shop in the 90s but never got up the nerve to wear it, can you believe that? Gawd I was shy in high school, never wanted to draw attention to myself but my sartorial aesthetic was already veering toward the dramatic. This time around, I'm NOT letting the inner wallflower keep me from wearing a cape! I found a beautiful leather-trimmed, fully lined wool plaid cape (by Pendleton, no less; Oregonian pride!) on etsy for $25. I've got to take in the shoulders, but by gum, I'm gonna do it and rock that cape!

love this one a lot. http://www.zara.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product/de/de/zara-sales/11015/83735/CAPE%2BMIT%2BKAROMUSTER

wowie. looking forward to colder days <3

Alex said...

I love capes!!!! Instant classic.

The capes at Zara are quite pleasing to the eye, but I found them to be incredibly impractical in person. More than $100 for a thin cape with a small closure at the top that won't keep you warm at all? I was disappointed.

So I opted for this one from Asos in Khaki(http://www.asos.com/Asos/Asos-Hooded-Military-Cape/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=1162523&SearchQuery=capes&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=-1&sort=-1&clr=Black).

Joanna, you would look fantastic in a cape! Go for it... can't wait to see pictures!

I would like to own one, but I don't think they are very practical. I ride my bike a lot and I think the wind would go straight through it, so you'll be chilled every time there's just a wisp of wind. Or when you ride your bike.
