Iceland wedding

Would you ever have a destination wedding? Where would you go? This Michigan couple invited their family and friends to Iceland, where they tied the knot in a teeny chapel. The portrait by the hot springs is so rad.

P.S. Weddings in Jamaica, Manhattan and Sweden.

  4. I love that you called the portrait 'rad.' It is. I would love to have a destination wedding, in Idaho, on my parents' front lawn or by the lake. I know Idaho doesn't sound like a 'destination,' but it's gorgeous. :)

  7. we were married in monterey, california which is only 8 hours from where we live, but it gave our guests a chance to take a mini vacation. i wouldn't change anything about it, but if i had to choose to have a major destination wedding, i think i'd pick florence. photos in the piazza would be incredible!

  9. Ahh..have you been to Iceland? I have and it's quite amazing, I actually think I recognize the last photo. If you love hot springs it's the place to go..and the country is so clean, if only we could use geothermal energy here! Anyways..it's a place that I would definitely visit again. Thanks for this post and for reminding me of great memories:)

  10. Ooo - the hot springs picture is so sweet! I'm not sure I could do a destination wedding - I think it would have to be some place incredibly special to both me and my husband to be. Call me old-fashioned, but I'm all about sentimental value!

  16. I definitely like the idea of a destination wedding but I also feel like it would add so much stress... dealing with all these new vendors and people that you don't know would be enough to drive my batty.... but I'd just love to get married in an old parisian church...sigh...

  24. Wow. Looks like it's in the middle of nowhere! What a memorable getaway for the couple and their guests. I always thought that I'd only do a destination wedding at a place that meant something to us as a couple, but then again, a random setting like this would be amazing! xo

No, no, no, & no. Simply put, if someone wants family & friends to be there, it is very selfish. I say that as a person who has been screamed at for not being able to afford about 10 of these things. If I want to go somewhere, I'll go on a vacation. (One time it was Iceland & I loved it.)

Ugh. See Miss Manners & Carolyn Hax & Ask Amy on this question. Lots of us love weddings & are very happy for people but really. It is a day, maybe 2-days about you...not a week. Not everyone's vacation time & money.

  45. Wow this is beautiful. I never thought much of Iceland until seeing a few things you've posted about it recently. What a beautiful place. If money was no object for anyone I might have considered a destination wedding but there is something to be said too for being surrounded by those you love in the place you call home.

  70. As much as I love the idea of the destination wedding, I'd never do it. I mean, I'd love to get married in Italy or something. It would be gorgeous. But I would hate that any friends and family who didn't have the money for a trip to Europe wouldn't be able to come and share the day with us--I think we'll stay local when we tie the knot.

I was married in Tuscany in 2005, and it was the most amazing experience! We had a small wedding with 20 people total, and I would never trade it for any other experience. We had an informal reception upon returning to Los Angeles, for all the family and friends who couldn't make it who enjoyed our stories and photos from the trip. This year, my best friend is getting married in Koh Samui in Thailand at the end of September. Can't wait to go! I really would highly recommend a destination wedding to anyone that can do it. It really makes for wonderful memories.

  77. This is beautiful! :) My ex-husband is Icelandic and we married in Reykjavík... but we married in the courthouse, in a very ugly orange room, and not in a gorgeous little church.

I've been to the hotsprings though and can attest that they are absolutely that gorgeous, however the photo does nothing to convey the smell of rotten eggs! ;)

  78. So picturesque. I've thought pretty seriously about having a destination. First, my boyfriend is from England & I'm from California, so a wedding somewhere else would mean not choosing sides. But also, I've always thought it would be nice because at a destination wedding, only the people who really want to go will be there, so all of the obligatory friends/family members will be invited but don't have to show up. I realize it's not as romantic of a way to look at it, but it would make the day go so much more smoothly, in my eyes.

  80. Such amazingly beautiful photos! Ironic because my bf and I have been talking about a wedding in Iceland. He is Icelandic and Swedish but raised in Norway and I'm a California girl. Icelanders are pretty proud of their heritage and I've never been there so I would love to have our wedding take place there. As someone above said - only people who really wanted to would be there. And that, after all, is what really matters most!!
