Fall trend #1: Army jacket

This fall, the fashion trends are SO adorable (and accessible), so I figured I'd make a little list of them this week. First up, army jackets! Would you wear this tomboy look? Perfect for the flea market and cider mill.

I was inseparable from my army jacket last fall! My favorite is wearing it with a feminine dress and boots.

I would totally rock that look..The army jackets are so adorable this season...I need one too:)

Btw: did you have a chance to celebrate on Sunday?

I've had an army jacket for the fall since as long as I can remember! It's a timeless classic!

Dancing Branflake said...

I love this! I would totally wear this to Apple Hill or trips to the bay. It would be a great staple with any scarf or hat.

Way too tomboy for me. I'll pick trench coats anytime.

Cheers x

I am SO excited for your fall trend picks this week, Jo! After finding Ruche on your blog last week, I didn't think it could get any better - but it does. I wonder if I could pull off a mustard-colored scarf with an army jacket...

Aura said...

I love army jackets but this one is a tad bit masculine for me. The cut is a little off and just looks boxy. I am kind of a box so I need a more defined waist. I love anything in army green colors, though.

Hollie said...

I think it's so cute. It would be great paired with something really feminine.

stephanie said...

loving the military style this fall! also, congrats on your 1 year anniversary :)

esdelope said...

I'm totally loving this look - I think especially with the pink accents it keeps the look from being too boxy and masculine. I have a similar jacket that I love to rock with jeans and a red lip.

Looking forward to the birthing story whenever you are ready to share! It will be very special to have it captured in words, so I'm sure you want to keep it equally as special!

Oh, this is great.I love their casual feeling.

just a bit too tomboy but i love army green as a color and as a jacket! I'd just need a bit different fit.

Laughter-Loving Stacy said...

Cuute, but I wish I had a fashion gene in me! Whenever I try on 'stylish' stuff, it just doesn't seem to work for me. >.<

The Yellow Door Paperie said...

I love this look-- I'd try to find a slimmer cut jacket, but awesome none the less!

Stephanie said...

I second Aura's thoughts. This specific jacket is definitely too boxy for my taste. :-\ In principle, I like the idea though. ;-)

[anna] said...

YES. something oversize, with a bit of a feminine twist.

Melissa Blake said...

I love that pink scarf! It's so cute! xoxo

Kelly Anne said...

Oh! Where can I get those boots? The whole look makes me feel ready for fall.

Jill said...

Love the jacket (and the whole look), but don't you think it takes "legs up to here" to pull it off? I fear it'd look a bit too sloppy with my 5'3" frame... Something new I'm discovering with my daughter though is that so many places are making adult styles in tiny sizes and boy can a baby pull off any trend that *I* can't. Target even has tweed bubble shorts with pink woolly tights in toddler sizes right now!

Canadian in London said...

as long as the army jacket pinches slightly in the waist. Or else I'd just look like a box!

Tamara Nicole said...

Love it! Funny it's totally the trned, I just did a military fall fashion post, as I see a bunch of other people have lol:-) Welcome to fun fall fashion!

Anonymous said...

This is too sloppy for me. Feel much more pulled together in a trench...can't go wrong with a trench. I'd feel so crappy in this one though.

Naysel said...

This is cute...trendy...I wouldn't wear it because I'm short and a little chubby...I need something that will make me look thinner!!

Anonymous said...

This, trendy? Glad I don't follow trends. LOL. This makes even me feel stylish (and I don't have much style).

bubbs... said...

Absolutely! Although I appear girly I am actually very tomboyish at heart. I love this army green jacket!

Yes I want to! But every jacket I've tried just makes me look dowdy and plump - not nearly as cute as this girl!

Not sure, I think I could work with it. Warmly, Karen

Whimsy Being said...

I'm a petite person, so often feel like I'm drowning in jackets that are a bit boxy. I like the look when I see it on others, so might have to give this a second try =)

I absolutely love the trend! Boden actually has one I love!

Barbour jackets will never go out of style, especially when paired with those cute rolled jeans and pink scarf.

I picked up a light weight military jacket at H&M late this spring to fight chilly San Fran air while out there visiting, and I cannot wait to be able to wear it on the East Coast!

My Owl Barn said...

I love those boots!

Um, YES I would!
Army jackets are the bee's knee's!
p.s. love your blog my friend!

Ooooh, you *just* made me excited for fall :)

Café Bellini said...

That looks like a barbour jacket. I have one and now I just need to get a pair of wellies to match :-)

erica said...

the army jackets i've seen (jcrew, apc) aren't as heavy or shapeless as the barbours, so that might be a better option for most people.

i do, however, love my barbour, and am looking for boots just like hers to complement them.

ciupa said...

I already do! Love them!

Joanna Goddard said...

yes, her boots are awesome! she is so cute :)

I'm so glad I kept mine--- I bought it about ten years ago at JCrew and I knew it'd be back "in" eventually:)

Bought one of these on Saturday from Urban Outfitters and I can't wait to wear it! The perfect fall jacket xx

rosiecampbell said...

I still have mine from yrs ago. It is the perfect piece for fall.

Only the pashmina/scarfs. Way too "street" for me.

I've worn my dad's airforce jacket & his original lined Levi jacket (from when he was a farm kid) for the last 30 years. I still do, along with my grandfather's Liberty of London paisley scarf...I'm glad things return but people should remember that some of us "were" Kate Moss before she was born. Also, check out Army/Navy stores, etc. Best pair of shorts I ever had I bought on MacDougal in the 80s...ghurkas from Brit Army. Trying to remember name of store. I wore them all the time, including on archaeology digs.

Great to hear!
When I visited Stockholm this summer I bought a military inspired jacket, a tunic and a pair of pants in a military color. My parents made fun of me asking if I was going to join the army. Ha! Poo on them!

Rachael said...

Love it! I think that its such a great contrast, this jacket with something girlier, like the scarf or some great earrings.

I just got myself a jacket like this recently and I love it. Mine is more fitted, but every time I wear it I get so many compliments.

I love the army jacket but I prefer to pair mine with a bit more girly pieces.

I've already housed Taro's military jacket, and I've been wearing it all. the. time.

Love this trend! I got an army jacket mid summer at the Gap Outlet. It seems to be courting the safari trend, as well, but that's okay; it was a bargain!

I;m pretty psyched to try it out with a Lacey black skirt... should be a fun mix of boy meets girl! Looking forward to more fall fashion updates!

BARBOUR!!!!!! Love it, wore mine today and good thing as Vancouver is all rain and no summer.

Mara said...

yes i love this look! I just got a military jacket and I've been wearing it and styling it up so many ways

The jacket on the blog picture is actually a classic waxed jacket from Barbour, the epitome of the British country style. It was quite popular in the 80's in Europe and had a comeback a few years ago. But it was never really out of style, at least not with a certain crowd.

BUT it has nothing in common with the army jackets to which you are linking. The Barbour was never worn in the army (see also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Barbour_%26_Sons), and the cut and style is quite different. And you would never ever see a real "Barbour girl" wearing one of the fashionable army jackets - at least not in Europe.

Caitlin said...

Army jackets are LITERALLY the best jackets.

Aron said...

You've got great photos too Joanna! I just wish we didn't have to wait until next year for the next one.

Anna Ander said...

Haha, I'm with Anonymous – for the first time ever, I might add. The classic oil skin, like hot cider and wellies, never goes out style. I got mine when I was fourteen and still wear it. Season prémière today, I might add.

Anonymous said...

yeah, second some of the other comments. This is a classic waxed Barbour jacket from the UK - not an army jacket. Been around for years (a 100 of them) and typically serve the wealthy country set for their shooting and fishing pursuits. Kind of fashionable at the moment. Find them here http://www.barbour.com/

i left my army jacket on a plane last month :( damn

I'm pretty sure that this jacket here is a Barbour. So not technically an army jacket but always chic. Country, city or otherwise!

Miss Cavendish said...

Is Barbour considered army? It's more blasted heath and moor to my mind . . .

oh, i've had that pic from ACL bookmarked for months! xo

Lovin the army jacket look or style. pair it with a skinny jeans and a combat brown boots!

mixshakepour said...

I posted one on my blog that's a little bit more feminine--the fabric is thinner so easier to shape (roll up the sleeves, etc). And the subject was shot by The Sartorialist, so you know it's spot on. Love, love, love Army Jackets and I am wearing one as I write this! :)

I like to look for trends such as this on eBay, that way you don’t end up spending as much money and sometimes you can find some really good deals as well.
For the military jacket trend I would recommend to search on ebay. A great example of this would be this Banana Republic Military/Utility jacket on eBay:
