We used to go on family camping trips every year. My dad would make bullet potatoes over the campfire and we'd ride bikes all day. But I have to say, I could never fully get into it. Camping felt so uncomfortable--sleeping on pebbles, peeing in the middle of the night, waking up freezing, worrying about bears sitting on your tent (that actually happened to my cousin).But, these days, I really want to give camping another shot, especially after seeing these gorgeous engagement photos. The fresh air looks revitalizing and wonderful! Do you like camping? Where do you like to go? I'd love to hear. xo

ReplyDeleteIt's near the Sacramento River in a teeny tiny town called Coloma. We set up tents right next to the river. The best part was this place had (clean!)bathrooms with showers and formal recreation (reggae night and an ice cream social), so though we had all the benefits of camping, it was a little posh! Compromise is everything, right?
I do like camping though it took a while to get into it.

I think I only like the idea of camping. In reality I prefer a thick mattress, soft sheets, and my own shower.

ReplyDeleteOur family goes camping at least three times a year. Everyone else has trailers or campers but we still use tents. I love sleeping in a tent, and it's surprising how many "campers" sit in their trailers and watch tv while we are having other fun.
I love camping! Mammoth Lakes, California is my favorite place.

I love camping when done properly and to me that means sleeping two people in a 6 person tent that's 6'7" tall, on two cushy airmattresses... one doesn't work unless you weigh the same... with several layers of blankets and pillows and don't forget the propane heater! Acadia Maine is my absolute favorite!

We just returned from our first camping trip with our three boys...Malibu :) It was awesome! I too was not sure how I'd make it through the dirt and such, but with showers close by, we did just fine. I'd recommend doing it either before Toby crawls or after 2 :)

well, what I like in camping is the bonfire, potatoes and other food you can make over the fire. I like playing the guitar by the fire, and these stories which are being told late in the night. But rest - sleeping in a tent, wet ground, peeing in the middle of the bushes is not so nice. But pictures are lovely!

ReplyDeleteI grew up camping, and have to say it's one of my favorite ways to spend a vacation. There's something very special about mountain air, letting go of a busy world, and just enjoying simple moments. We upgraded from a tent to a tent trailer this year, and the change has been wonderful. My aging hips get a cushioned bed to sleep on, but we still get the benefits of a tent as well. You can make camping as in depth as you like, though...a cabin would be a wonderful way to spend some time as well! (P.S. I'm across the U.S. from you, so we go camping in the West Coast mountain ranges...)
ReplyDeleteoh i used to hate camping too when I was growing up, but I love it now! we camp at Red River Gorge every year in Kentucky, we camp out at our friend's farm (also in KY), and at music festivals too. I have no issues getting dirty or squatting in the woods anymore lol!
ReplyDeleteI love camping. I actually lived in a plywood hut for a summer in the Rocky Mountains, as a wilderness camp counselor. I love Kirby Cove, and anywhere else in Marin County is great as well- highly unlikely you'll see a bear, and more likely a sea lion.

ReplyDeleteI Loooove to camp - except I've never roughed it. We have a membership to a campground (since I was a baby), and they have bathrooms and showers. It is so spectacular to be so close to nature. Perhaps you can bring an air mattress to increase your camping fun!

ReplyDeletethe ULTIMATE experience for me though was hiking 9 miles down into the grand canyon for a 5 day rafting & camping trip {a guided tour}. we slept without tents! just a sleeping pad & bag under the stars. the moon was so bright i woke up thinking someone was shining a flashlight in my eyes. seriously. definitely out of my element/comfort zone which made the whole experience amazing and unforgettable. i won't lie though, towards the end i was fantasizing about a steaming-hot shower.
I love camping - my husband and I having been trying to get away to go camping for forever. Those shots are gorgeous and really make me miss New England in the fall

ReplyDeleteAs a kid, I loved camping- that was our family vacation for weeks during the summer. My sister, however, hated it and would complain mercilessly.
ReplyDeleteAs adults, I find it uncomfortable and annoying, but my sis is an avid hiker, and outdoor enthusiast. Who knew? Maybe you should give it a shot- ease in, with electric camp sites and indoor (but rustic) showers and see how it goes?
I mean, really- who can beat melty, gooey s'mores? They only taste great camping...that could be worth it!

ReplyDeleteI'm from Red Hook, NY (upstate...not brooklyn) and I go camping all the time to North/South Lake. It's 40 minutes from here and tootally worth it. The drive alone is worth the trip!

Having grown up in Vermont and then going to school in Colorado, camping was amazing. Now, that I'm in my mid-30s, its lost its appeal. That said, I think if I just went, I would enjoy it. Plus, these pics really make it look beautiful.

I live in Oregon so that is kind of the norm here, we have a lot of places just 45 minutes from the city so a lot of options!! There is just something about escaping into the woods for a few days that is so freeing- a simple life.
ReplyDeleteI love camping! I live in Idaho, so we have a lot of mountains and places to go, but it's especially fun when you get to be near a lake of some sort. Water just makes it so much better. Stories around the campfire... s'mores... stargazing in a completely black forest full of beautiful trees... There's nothing better.

I don't have too much experience with camping, my 5th grade besties and I did Napa on a budget this summer. Hotels can be budget bursters in Napa so we camped out and splurged on dinners and tastings. =) We stayed at Skyline Park in Napa and drove to nearby wineries and made it up to Calistoga.
ReplyDeleteI go camping every year in the same place, Kings Canyon. It's on the way to Yosemite, but less crowded! Everyone swims in the river and jumps off of Muir Rock, where John Muir used to give nature lectures.

Oh my! My family has ALWAYS camped! All of my childhood memories revolve around camping. We used to pack up the camper and camp for weeks at a time with my grandparents and their camper. We would fry the fish my dad and grandpa would catch. My dad, sister, and I have spent numerous spring breaks roughin' it in Northern Arkansas. Since we are the Natural State, we have no shortage of camp grounds. My absolute favorite would have to be the Buffalo River. There's nothing better than setting up a tent near the bank and falling asleep to the sound of the flowing water and waking up with the sun with the mid-March morning air.

ReplyDeleteWe camped every summer growing up. We always went to Yosemite National Park...It's so amazing. Every morning we played pooh cones by the bridge. Each person picked a pinecone and dropped it in on one side of the bridge and then ran to the other to see which cone came out first. Swimming, Bike riding, drawing in meadows of wild flowers with my mom. And then campfires and smores at night...I miss those days!
ReplyDeleteCatalina island is a wonderful place to go--it was actually my first camping/hiking trip. But I can't say I'm much of a camper either. A nice compromise is a trip to Yosemite Valley and a stay in Curry Village (we have an old travelogue up if you're interested). The little cabins are bare bones, but there are amenities all around. And your day hikes are in one of the most amazing places in the country.
ReplyDeletei love camping! in new york, the adirondacks are the best. you can find a whole range of campsites, from hiking in a few miles to a secluded spot to more family-friendly sites that you can pull a car up to and be within hearing range of other campers (safety in numbers!) be sure if you are going camping away from a car that you have a bear-proof canister so you don't have any food thieves throughout the night :) i've never had any bear run-ins though, but better safe than sorry.

i love camping! We like to camp at places that have great trails and waterfalls so we can do lots of hiking while we're there. We recently went to Jones Gap in SC - it was stunning! (I have some pretty photo tours on my blog of the waterfalls!)

One item that will make it a lot more comfortable is a sleeping pad to go under your sleeping bag. Good luck!!

Just us, smores, hot dogs on sticks, beers, blankets, flash lights, and the smell of the camp fires! I can't wait to reminiscence about our relationship over the camp fire and snuggle in a tent!

I think I like the idea of camping but the reality always makes me miserable. I'm a huge fan of indoor plumbing, electricity and my comfy bed lol I'm a lifelong city girl and have never much cared for being outdoorsy. I'm just thankful my husband doesn't care for it either! Phew! Hehe :)

Completely agree with Giulia - I used to feel guilt about this, but I've since embraced my dislike of camping. I once saw a vintage print of a 50's woman in bed, smiling in her nightie and saying, "I love not camping." Sums me up.

ReplyDeleteCamping is the best way to completely unplug, enjoy nature and the company of friends and family. Now with two boys, watching them play in the dirt, climb trees, collect sticks and rocks is the ultimate. We live in Portland, OR and we only have to drive an hour out of the city to camp at either the beach or Mt Hood or the Columbia River Gorge- endless possibilities in the NW! There's lots of ways to EASE into camping.....many parks offer little rustic cabins or even better yurts with heat and cots.....Enjoy!

I hate camping so much! The bathroom situation alone makes me long for hotels and room service. I am such a city girl- I am scared of the dark and long for the soft glow of lights wherever I am.

ReplyDeleteMy family used to go camping every summer in the NC mountains. They are GORGEOUS. We lived in eastern NC near the beach, so it was like a whole new world to go to the western side of the state. Fall-in-the-mountains is my favorite season. You would love it!

Growing up, every Summer we loaded up into my parents van and roadtripped across the US. They took us camping in the Rocky Mountains, Yosemite, The Grand Canyon, Lake Tahoe, Sequoya National Park, Yellowstone, Smoky Mountain National Park, and little unknown places along the way. It really gave me an appreciation for just checking out and spending time with the people you love, minus Iphones, television, and the comforts in life.
ReplyDeleteAs an adult, my husband and I have followed the tradition and have already planned 2 years worth of roadtrips to camp with our future little ones. We just got back from our annual Colorado camping trip 3 weeks ago, and if you're looking for ideal camping weather, it's a great spot. We escape our heat in July and head there, where the weather is absolutely perfect. During the day it's sunny, in the 70's, and feels like a wonderful Spring day. All the wildflowers are blooming in July, and it feels like the entire wildlife population of the state is roaming around just waiting to be seen. At night it's down in the 40's, which seems cold, but camping in the heat is miserable and not even worth it. It's perfect for getting cozy around the fire, making smores, and cuddling up in your tent at night. Plus you want to bundle up and wear your warm boots and sweatshirts, and that's not possible in the warmer locations.

ReplyDeleteWe went camping recently with a bunch of couples. I think it would have been fun but it rained almost the whole danged time. Sleeping in the tent during the rain was very relaxing and romantic, but having to pack up wet gear and then hose it all down again when we got back to the city was awful. It was just cold enough to get a chill from everything being wet. Ugh.
I'd like camping if I just got to show up and everything was all set up and ready to go.
Oh, and we had a pretty good spot in Kettle Moraine (WI).
That's too funny b/c I too grew up camping and have never "really" fully enjoyed it as an adult...until now :) The reason for NOW is not so much a location (Lake George, NY last weekend) but b/c of the company-my amazing boyfriend and his son and extended family!

All the things I used to do-smores, hot dogs, lighting camp fires, bike rides, swimming...I now get to do all over again through a 7 year olds eyes :) I still don't like peeing in the woods or waking up freezing but this time, it all seems so much more worth it... Lovely VP.
Hate camping...I mean, what's better than your own bed? The hotel bed comes in close second, but not the camping sleeping bag; ugh, the cold, the bugs, the possible poison ivy and feeling literally dirty the whole time until you come home. No, thank you! :)

ReplyDeletewe DO love camping. But I do have some creature comforts that I like to have to make it still feel like a vacation. For one, we always 'car camp' this is where you pull your vehicle right up to the campsite. With the car right there, we can always drive to get something if we need it, and we can use the car's outlets to plug in the air pump for our queen sized air mattress, which these days, as I approach 30 is SO important to me :) Some nights it feels more comfortable than our mattress at home :) Another thing is that I limit our camping to fair weather days (75 day and no less than 60 at night). We rented a cabin in PA in mid-march once with no central heat, only a heat stove. I thought it would be so romantic. Instead we found ourselves waking up freezing at 2am, and then again at 5 am because the fire had gone out! Another thing I like to do is really plan our meals so that we eat well! No beenies and weenies for us. We have a little cast iron pot and if you google, there are a million one pot meals that are delicious that you can make easily by prepping the ingredients before you leave, and then just throwing them in the pot over the fire when you get there! Lastly, after going without several times, I never camp anywhere that I can't use a toilet or get a hot (or at least luke-warm) shower. My girlfriends in college were a little judgemental about this sometimes--why couldn't i just rough it for a weekend? Its just that, if I'm going to give up a whole weekend to something, I want to feel great! And I just love to not be icky sticky or stinky in my tent at night--and I like to see what might be crawling near where I potty at night! State Parks in my area (MD, VA, NC) seem to be the best places to camp with these factors. They all have been clean, well organized and many have the type of bathroom facilities we require!

ReplyDeleteYou don't need to sleep in a tent to be camping, you could stay in a yurt. Yurts generally have built-in furniture, like bunkbeds, inside. I don't know whether any of the state or national parks near you have yurts onsite, but many of the provincial parks in Ontario do. As a bonus, you can stay in them year-round and they're often equipped with a wood stove or an electric heater.

But since I met my husband, he show me ( or better way to say is teach me) to see and know new places in a complete and amazing way. We made a trip one summer of 2006 in Europe and I just was fascinated to see the most beautiful sunsets, to enjoy the amazing stars at night, to hear the birds singing. Was an increidible experience for me that I will never forget in my life.
Now we are going again but we are going now to Lowlands! in Holland! Is a festival of many bands and so many things to do. Im really looking forward to that!

i don't really LOVE camping. but i enjoy it for a few days! i live in Portland, so my family and i usually go to the Oregon coast. it never gets too hot (or too cold, if you go in the summer) and it seems like everyone out here loves to go camping (i mean it IS the Pacific Northwest...) so there are a million places you can get the most adorable, stylish camping supplies/items.

ReplyDeleteI grew up with lots of camping- it's a big thing in Ontario as there are so many provincial parks- but find it quite a to do now that I'm in charge. We have a 10 month old baby and there's just soooo much to pack and you have to remember everything because there isn't a store. And it's hard to improvise with babies! But once I'm there and realize that I have everything, it's great fun. There's such a short window of time between the intensity of the bugs in late spring/early summer and the moving in of the early cool weather. But if you get the right time of year, it can be truly magical. It's a great thing to do for your children, in my opinion. Gives them a real sense of connectedness with the wild.

ReplyDeleteLast time I took the family for a two night camping trip. We had awful, LOUD, partying neighbors and hardly got any sleep. I trotted off to the shower house the next morning and when I returned, much to my surprise, my family had the tents packed and the car loaded. They weren't even entertaining a discussion about staying a second night.
I grew up camping and love it to this day. My parents, during their courtship, drove throughout the Rocky Mountains and desert southwest with all their camping gear crammed into an MGB sportscar. My husband and I camp in the same region to this day.
ReplyDeleteI am a student, so the cheapest way for us to holiday, is to camp. We hang up a hammock, and laze in the sun all day. I am from Byron, so we camp anywhere on the east coast. I've been camping in the Australian desert, that was fun...but I felt super isolated!

ReplyDeleteThe BEST place I can suggest for camping is CANADA!! Sure, I may be a little biased but Canada is the place to be. I would personally suggest Beausoleil Island, it is incredible tiny and has HUGE campsites. The perfect place to be if you want to feel isolated but still be attached to civilization.
Try pitching your tent on a flat mossy section of ground and wear nothing more than your knickers to bed. Seriously. Too much in the way of clothing and you will sweat and become very cold.
I would be more worried about raccoons than bears but the key to both is making noise. When you close up your belongings for the night stack all of your pots and pans and metal dishes on top. You will wake up and the animal will (likely) scared away by the noise.
The beauty of Beausoleil Island is the lack of bears. They do not seem to swim. =]
My husband says that my idea of camping is staying at a hotel without a coffee shop in the lobby.

We camp in Big Sur California every summer. My husband has been going every year with his family since he was a kid. Five years ago (this Saturday!) we got married there. We had our first son last year and I cannot wait until we can camp with him.

ReplyDeleteI really love camping! My new husband and I even registered at REI :) Luckily there are a ton of beautiful national and state parks in Utah. In Southern Utah during the summer it doesn't even get very cold! There are a few times this summer when I didn't even get in my sleeping bag. You can always bring lots of cushiony blankets when you're car camping, and there are all sorts of things to make it more fun, like a double hammock or sleeping bag for snuggling ;)

ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE camping, but didn't do much of it until I moved to Northern California. So that might be a trick to it ;) Other than that the most important aspect of camping that has made it super enjoyable, comfortable, and essential to my sanity is carefully and conscientiously choosing what I bring. I think this can be a huge pitfall for people who buy things without knowing how to use it, or who tend to bring waaaay more than they'll need, etc. I'd get to know your gear, how it works, what you really need and really don't need... eventually you end up with a modest and simple supply you feel comfortable and confident with and it can really free you up to enjoy the natural place you are in.
I'm a car camper, I like the conveniences of not lugging all my crap to a campsite. My favorite sites have been in the national parks, Yosemite being my top (going there for my birthday in a few weeks). Yosemite is great because in the valley there is a grocery store and some restaurants so if you're tired from exploring and hiking, you can eat out or pick-up any essentials. Plus, they have a luxury hotel there too in case you absolutely HATE camping.

Maybe try it out with a cabin and see how it goes?
I've been camping on Cape Cod. There are some great campgrounds and they can provide everything for you (if you so choose) so that everything is there when you show up. It was great - and cheap!!! - but I don't know how much fun it would be with a newborn!
ReplyDelete10 years ago I went camping and woke up in the morning cold and uncomfortable wondering why I had subjected myself to it. Then, last summer I camped in Kenya. This summer in the Catskills. I have a new outlook on it now that I live in a small apt in the city, its refreshing. If you bring a few key comforts along (a beautiful mug or blanket) its wonderful to see them framed by the trees and wilderness.

ReplyDeleteWe live in Missouri where there are many small rivers and my husband and I love to camp alongside them (at campsites - with bathrooms). After sleeping on the ground the first time we immediately bought a bigger tent and cots!

ReplyDeleteLovely pictures, and such fun reading about other's camping adventures, however....I enjoy hiking around in the woods for a few hours, but unfortunately, I cannot think of anything more miserable than camping. I tried going to camp for a week when I was 12 and made it to Wednesday before demanding my parents come get me. I never looked back. Cool clothes though!

my husband and I just finished 2 days of camping in the redwoods in Northern California. It was amazing and we made the best gourmet camp food, watched stars and went hiking and to a small swimming hole. definitely think it's worth giving another shot.

I go for a week to the grand canyon south rim every year, and a few other places whenever I can get away...If you ever visit my blog, i have photos...no cute engagement photos, but hey, no cute boy to camp with either...and that is JUST fine. Those photos look wonderful in theory, but I'm not a fan of camping in real life. The bugs and cold (or hot/sticky air) and sleeping on the bumpy ground does not a happy girl make. Also, I can't not shower for more than a day without feeling gross. I'm definitely more of a hotel by the beach kind of girl--the day spent on a gorgeous beach followed by a shower and sleep on a big luxurious bed...now that's heaven to me!

ReplyDeleteI have had bad luck with camping. It always rains when I camp, and wet camping is not a lot of fun. I keep trying it though. I hear its nice in the sun.

ReplyDeleteI used to like camping until I moved to the Yellowstone area for the summer. The bear warnings are every where, and I'm terrified of sleeping in the woods now!
{Doesn't help that there was a bear attack a few weeks ago either!}
There are so many kinds of camping, how can you diss it entirely? I've packed into the wilderness to reach some amazing places. but I'm am also a huge fan of pulling up to a site in the car, starting a fire, opening a bottle of wine and mixing a box of mac n cheese.
ReplyDeleteMy man and I spent a week on the road with a trunk full of spices and food. We cooked gourmet style from northern cal to southern on our way to Coachella. That was five years ago. ;) Unforgettable.
Give it another try, just remember it's all in the journey and keep it simple.

These photos are lovely! I never thought i'd be one for camping, yet i made the exception this summer for a festival in Novi Sad, Serbia. It was so much fun sitting round the tents at night getting to know your camping neighbours (a few of who i've kept in touch with). Only downside was that the heat made for a very hot tent, leaving any real sleep a bit out of the question.

I HAVE been camping...about 3 times in my life...*sigh*...I usually like to be positive and encouraging, but camping...I hated it!...Wet from dew in the morning, slugs and spiders everywhere, and cccccccold water!!! I swore that if I ever camped again it would be with a driving camper that had a bed, t.V., and a shower so I could take a hot bath. {I liked the roasting marshmallows and telling stories part though! *Teehee* THERE...something positive! :-)}

ReplyDeletethe rules for happy camping are pretty simple, it should be comfortable and treaty. don't bother with sleeping bags, take proper bedding and lots of it. have a fire! eat super-nice food, grilled fresh fish, juicy steaks, pancakes and homemade jam for breakfast, and importantly, there must always be {homemade} cake.
we have a bell tent which is nice and roomy for the three of us. oh and solar fairy lights!
you know, we took Iris camping when she was only a few months old and she loved it then and even more so now.
i suppose you could say that i prefer glamping but that is such a horrible cut and shut word we'll pretend that i didn't say it at all, okay?
you should try it again!

Michigan has some gorgeous beaches. We love camping in sites close to the water. We have a small pop-up camper, but we also have tents for when we'd rather camp at walk-in sites...like atop the sand dunes or on a bluff overlooking the lake. We've made lovely memories in the countryside by touring wine vineyards, berry picking, and eating at local digs!

ReplyDeletelove to camp-- though car camping is by far preferable to a full-on hike in, no running water, no bathroom deal. we've started going each summer up to a little town in the catskills called phoenicia, which has a lovely state park site. and, more importantly, the best breakfast spot called Sweet Sue's-- simply amazing food and we always see Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Saarsgard there.

ReplyDeleteCamping in the Northwest is the best! I grew up in a little German-themed mountain town and we used to drive up into the mountains and sleep under the stars on a Friday night. Mmmm...the air is fresh, it barely rains East of the Cascade Mountains, and the starts shine bright every night. The higher you go in the mountatins, the better the view of the stars up above. It's magic.

We just got back from our annual backpacking trip. There were 13 of us, 8 adults and 5 teenagers plus one Jack Russell terrier!
ReplyDeleteWe usually go to the Oh-Be-Joyful wilderness near Crested Butte CO but this year because of weather concerns we went to the Zirkel Wilderness instead. A great time was had by all-- dayhiking, singing along with the guitar around a campfire, fishing and bathing in an icy cold stream and lake, amazing stars and the bright Milky Way on a moonless night, and on the last foggy morning on the hill behind our tents a mother Big Horn sheep and her lamb watching us as we ate our breakfast!
Can't wait until next year!

ReplyDeleteI literally JUST started camping over the past month and I am surprised at how much I love it! Roasting marshmallows over the campfire, mimosas for breakfast, card games in the afternoon and my hubby picked up a ukulele for some added entertainment! We use a large air mattress and super cozy sleeping bag, bring our pillows from home for added comfort... and I keep an axe next to the mattress in case of bears :\

ReplyDeletei hate it. i always feel dirty. whether i've showered or not. a group of neighbors went camping recently. we stayed at the nearby b&b. enjoyed hanging out at the campsite during the day, but slept in comfy beds and ate an organic gourmet breakfast every morning. perfect compromise!
I love camping and I absolutely love these photos. I usually go to Taos ski valley in NM during the summer to camp...but sometimes we end up in a cute little cabin.

i love camping its my no.1 form of travel! i have camped everywhere from on the ground in the middle of the white desert in egypt to places a lttle closer to home like the east coast of australia! we have some great camping spots here and nothing beats a clear view of the stars! xx

Oh I love camping! My dad used to plan it every year around 4th of july and we'd all go up to Sequoia and camp near the river. We'd hike in the freezing water, find waterfalls, and make bonfires. Give it another shot, you'll love it!

Yeah! Give it a shot and you will never ever feel uncomfortable again :) as if I know what you will feel. But what I am saying is true, maybe you are not just ready during the time you have been out for camping. Once you get the hang of it, you will never say what you have said before.
